Stopped in for a lunch exploring Main St near The University of Delaware in Newark. Ordered a Thai Ice Tea along with a standard Banh Mi as this was my first time checking this place out. I'll be back for the other variations with family as they always enjoy a good crispy banh mi with either pate and cold cuts like the one I had or beef teriyaki. The banh mi had all the parts to it. There were pickled veggies; carrots and turnip, a slide of spicy jalapeños which got me reaching for my Thai Ice Tea. The Mayo and pate spread could have been a little more along with the cold cuts as I always appreciate a stuffed Banh Mi because getting messy with your food means you are enjoying it right? The bun was toasted well and had a crunch to it. They don't have an extensive menu for bubble tea like Kung Fu Tea or T Barr down the road but it's best to do what you do best and stick with your namesake. The outdoor seating is nice but do keep in mind that you are on a busy road and though the cars driving by are always pleasant to watch; the occasional truck will ruin your meal and leave you smell smog on a still day. All in all with Banh Mi near my work and getting my lunch done in about 45 min it's a good bet that I'll be back for more! read more

Well, if it's a place called Banh Mi Boy, I'm ordering the banh mi. Unfortunately, as it turns out, it's simply not trying hard enough. While the service was friendly, this isn't a banh mi that seems like any care is put into it. The most important part of any sandwich is arguably the bread. The bread offered here, which is quite soft throughout, seems to be meant for other purposes (i.e., cheesesteak?) - but not banh mi. The meat and vegetable ingredients in my "original" were sub-standard and pretty forgettable for a banh mi -- there's very little of each and there wasn't much excitement in each bite. Yes, I finished it, but it didn't make me want to come back at all. And I always love a good banh mi. So there's plenty of room for improvement. If it's true that they are under new ownership (according to another recent review), I hope they take this as a chance to improve. Delicious banh mi on walking distance of a college campus. We were on vacation and on our road trip stopped by here after reviewing from other yelpers and boy, lunch did not disappoint. First, upon arrival, I noticed that we are in walking distance from an university college. There is a parking lot for the customers which is awesome. The menu is right behind the counter and they have lunch specials for $6.95 and up and you can have a whole banh mi sandwich, bag of chip and can soda. We ordered 4 different lunch special banh mi: chicken, the original (which is usually called banh mi dac biet in other banh mi shops), pork and a vegetarian. We grabbed our selection of chips and soda and sat. The orders were brought out to us in minutes. The crispy French baguette with the meat fillings and tofu fillings along with the pickled carrots, cilantro, cucumber and jalapeño slices, siracha and mayo are all so yummy! They do have a few table seatings and some high seats along the store front. The place also serve rice dishes. I love college towns! So many great little restaurants like Banh Mi Boy. This one is a must visit. It's off the beaten path so you have to seek it out and it's well worth it. It's a sleek sparse large dining area with bright orange walls and lots of plain white tables. A simple menu of a few choice Banh Mi sandwiches and some other offering and some cool tunes. Last Thursday I decided to pass on eating in and came here. I ordered the Vietnamese meatballs platter but got the sandwich. This however was an honest miscommunication. I saw it on the menu but never specified the platter. Nonetheless my server offered to take back the sandwich and give me the platter. He came out and said they had to make the rice and it would take 15 minutes to which I said no problem. As I waited he checked on me and said my food wouldn't be much longer. I can say the wait was well worth it. The meatballs were very tasty and the side salad and sweet dressing complimented the meatballs and rice very well. I typically take leftovers home but I tore this dish up in one shot. The meal was not only tasty but relatively healthy and clean compared to other dine-out options. Once I paid the check my server saw I was looking to throw out some trash and he nicely offered to throw it out for me inside as he was closing up. In addition to my meal hitting the spot respect goes to my server for his patience and humility in handling my order, giving me the benefit of the doubt by switching out my order free of charge, showing concern and regard by communicating with me as I was waiting, and extending courtesy by throwing out my trash as he was closing (the seemingly little things count as big things to me). Before owners changed I used to love the summer rolls at Banh Mi Boy. After the change I went twice, never again. The price changed from around $6.25 to $9.75 and the size of the rolls decreased by 30 percent. There were 2 small pieces of pork in each roll. Rolls were tiny. Compare to Pork Summer Rolls at Pho Cali, you can see slices of pork rolled around and you get 4 large rolls for $10, compared to 3 summer 'noodle' rolls. Very disappointing. read more

We ordered four types of sandwiches that includes roast pork, chicken, original, and vegetarian. The usual fillings were carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, and jalapeno peppers that came with the sandwiches. I personally enjoyed the vegetarian one the most if I had to choose just one. The baguette was delicious because it was soft and toasted lightly just the way i liked mine. The breading seemed to be perfect with the texture. I must admit Joju in NYC set the bar really high for me so what may seem like a 4 to me may seem like a 5 to many others. Traveling through Delaware we decided to make a stop here for lunch. The place was super clean and quiet not much interaction between us and the staff. My husband ordered a BBQ pork banh mi while I ordered a pork banh mi. While his was great I was a bit disappointed because I hadn't realized that it would made with a pork roll, I do wish that would have been a little more transparent. Overall the sandwich was good just not exactly what I would have wanted. I will say these were the largest banh mi sandwiches I've ever had usually they baguettes are smaller. We decided to try a pair of sandwiches, the pho sandwich and the pork belly. While the pho sandwich was my selection, the pork belly beat it by a mile and would be my clear recommendation. This place is amazing, clean, and makes delicious banh mi with plenty of variety. I like love the original while my husband who isn't usually a fan loves their pork belly banh mi. Maybe I went on an off day, but I wasn't a huge fan of the food here. I ordered the original banh mi and a taro boba smoothie while my husband had a curry chicken banh mi. The bread was really hard, and it wasn't easy to chew. On the other hand the tapioca balls of the boba were kind of soft. It should usually be the other way around. I had a bite of my husband's curry chicken, and the filling was delicious while carrots and daikon on my banh mi were the best part of my sandwich. I'm not being facetious, daikon is one of my favorite foods. I think I read that they serve bowls instead of sandwiches. If I came here again, I'd go for one of the bowls and skip the boba smoothie. If you're looking for a great Banh Mi, come to Florida. Maybe I had too high of expectations based on where I live. read more

I am a big fan of Banh Mi Boy as you can probably tell from the multiple checkins over time. I have sampled the different Banh Mi offerings, including some of their specials. The bread is well made, not quite the usual baguette that I am used to but I think that is more of a Delaware supply thing. The crust is still crisp and flaky. The pickled veggies are well made, crisp and crunchy carrot and daikon with he right amount of vinegary bite to it. The spreadables (depends on which type of banh mi you get) is always well made and generous. The different meats are succulent and juicy when appropriate. My favorite is the meatball followed by the pork. I enjoy banh mi and this is the best banh mi in Delaware. Salads, bubble tea, desserts, and spring rolls are also on the menu and worth a try. If there are any specials they will likely be good as this is the same family that run the Saigon restaurant down the road in Newark. The staff and owners are friendly, fast, and always cheerful at the shop. read more

I love their original banh mi! I never had banh mis anywhere else so I can't comment or compare but I'm addicted to the sandwiches here. All the ingredients are so fresh! I can recommend the meatball, chicken, and roast pork banh-mis, too but the original's my favorite. I've tried to pho banh mi once and never got it again because it tasted rather boring and nothing like pho. They have a frequent diner card which gets you a free sandwich after you buy 5. Banh mi boy also has the best bubble tea and blended (asian) drinks on main street. Their bubble tea blows Tealicious out of the water. I know it's just bubble tea powder, pearls and a blender but they do it right. They don't skimp on the bubble tea powder and their blender does not leave ice chunks, and the bubbles are the right consistency in terms of chewiness. Another thing to try is the coconut dessert drink they have. It's white and green in color. So good! It's pricey though so I don't get it every time. I didn't give this place 5 stars because some of their food items could use improvement. 1, the tum yum soup is not yummy at all. It tastes like boiled vinegar sprinkled with bean sprouts. 2. the summer rolls and salads are okay, not memorable, and overpriced. 3. the rice they serve is cooked wrong or something, mushy in some places and hard in other places and grainy, not at all what Asian rice should be. It tastes more like microwaved bagged rice. I say, do try their banh mi but skip out on the spring rolls, salad, and soup (there's better at other vietnamese restaurants). I am a HUGE Banh Mi fan. And...I am really picky. Most places get the bread wrong... lack flavor...and generally just don't understand what it is that Maes this such a great sandwich. Banh Mi Boy gets it all right. The bread is great and so are all the fillings. What they do different is offer some non-traditional Banh Mi that are spectacular. the Pho Beef Bahn me is like taking a bite of Pho. It tastes exactly like Pho if it were a sandwich. The curry Chicken is also great...not traditional, but just delicious. The Vietnamese Sausage is spicy and delicious as well. They also have Pho on certain days as well as a lemongrass soup that is very delicious. The place is clean and the staff friendly. The ONLY quibble is they don't put enough cilantro on...but as long as you ask, they'll load it up with as much of the toppings as you like!
