We've been to the radiology department at Phoenix Children's Hospital several times for my child's X-rays, and unfortunately, this location has consistently been disorganized. Every visit seems to involve a very long wait, but this most recent experience was especially frustrating. After arriving, I checked in using the self-service tablet as instructed and waited patiently. After about 40 minutes, one of the receptionists finally asked if I needed assistance. I explained that I had already checked in and had been waiting. That's when they realized my check-in had never been processed. Instead of a smooth resolution, the reception staff began arguing with each other about what had happened while I was standing there. Although they apologized for the mistake, we still had to wait another 30 minutes before finally being called back. Mistakes happen, but when families are already stressed and bringing children in for medical care, communication and organization are incredibly important. The medical staff has always been kind once we're seen, but the front desk experience in the radiology department has been consistently disappointing. I hope this location improves its check-in process and staff communication so other families don't experience the same unnecessary delays. read more

We brought our child to the emergency room, and before any diagnosis was made, literally while my child was in the middle of their first medical exam --a registration clerk entered and forced me to pay a $1,335 upfront deposit. Under the federal EMTALA law, it is strictly illegal for an emergency department to delay care, coerce a family, or demand cash deposits before a patient is screened and stabilized. Demanding $1,335 while a child is actively undergoing emergency testing is a blatant violation of federal consumer protections. To make matters worse, the paperwork they handed me defaulted entirely to the maximum, inflated CHARGEMASTER sticker prices (charging $2,670 for CPT code 99283 alone). By forcing maximum rates onto an uninsured family without offering an upfront cash discount, this hospital is also violating Internal Revenue Code Section 501(r), which legally bans non-profit hospitals from using predatory, un-discounted sticker prices to exploit unprotected patients. If you are an uninsured family, watch this hospital's billing clerks very closely. They will violate federal laws to take your cash before a doctor even tells you what is wrong with your child. I'll report this hospital to CMS for emergency care violations and to the IRS for breaking Section 501(r) non-profit tax laws by price-gouging uninsured families, and I STRONGLY urge every parent who was forced to pay a predatory upfront deposit here to file the exact same federal reports so we can force a government audit of their tax-exempt status. I'm beyond grateful for PCH once again after the scariest weeks of my life... I won't go into all of the detail here, but I recently headed to the PCH emergency room with my daughter when she had a fever that wouldn't go down, headache, body aches, and couldn't sleep... We arrived around 2:30am on a Wednesday night / Thursday morning and thank goodness for the folks in the admissions area for realizing that she needed to be seen immediately. We ended up staying the night and getting all kinds of meds and tests that evening from the ER and then getting admitted the next day... and we didn't get to go home until the following Tuesday. It turned out that she had a really bad case of pneumonia, but the PCH team was incredibly thorough with testing to make sure nothing else was going on... Huge shoutout to the nursing team on the 9th floor for taking such great care of Mila (and me too). I was in a daze most of that time so I don't remember all of their names, but they were attentive and so great at their jobs. Also, if you ever need an IV put on, ask for Mike - he is incredible. I have such respect for the entire staff here - especially those that work the overnight shift. All that said, PCH is extremely thorough so we didn't get to go home until we saw many many doctors and teams including general hospitalist doctors, pulmonology, hematology, and ear, nose and throat. We also saw the respiratory team and had many other teams check-in on both of us during our stay. As I said in my last review (almost 13 years ago), PCH has a reputation for being the best in Arizona for a reason... the name speaks for itself. From the colorful curtains in each room to the movies playing on TVs throughout the lobbies and individual rooms, toys for children to play with as they wait to be seen, etc... and now seeing so much more of how they have childlife specialists and teams to help explain everything to both the kids and their parents. I will have to take my daughter to some follow-up appointments at PCH, but I pray that we won't need to visit again after that. If the need does arrive, I would not hesitate to return. I can't even begin to explain how incredible this hospital and their staff has been . My son had a tonsillectomy and adenoid removal done last week. Because he was under 3, he had to stay overnight. We were on the 9th floor and had Raelyn as his first nurse and she was INCREDIBLE. She was so caring, thoughtful and patient. My son loves stethoscopes and she let him listen to his own heart. Our second nurse, Kelly, was also awesome-she advocated for us when we needed to switch to IV meds. The 9th floor has a play room for kids and also has little buggy carts. This was SO helpful to help get some energy out. It also looked like they had play stations and other gaming systems for older kids. I also wanted to give a shoutout to the nurse named Maria. She was never our assigned nurse but she would play with our son as he went around in the buggy & at the end of her shift she brought him a glove balloon with a silly face AND a giant superman balloon. She was so sweet! For as awful as surgery is on a 2 year old, Phoenix Children's staff made it great. read more

I have never needed Phoenix Children's Hospital, but have seen several locations. A friend asked me to drive her to an appointment for her son. The process from parking, finding the office, checking in the care that the resident and the doctor took through the checkout process. This was just a general well-child check-up, and the resident took the time to speak with the parent, not at the parent, to listen to all the questions the parent had and to answer them in a manner that the parent could understand and didn't feel less than because the parent didn't know the answer. The nurse came in to give the shots, and she was so quick and thorough that the little boy didn't even know that he had received a shot by the time she had finished. Not that any parent wants to take their child to the doctor or a hospital, but if you've got to, you might as well take him to the best place where you'll be heard, understood, and treated holistically. read more

Be prepared for higher-than-expected costs and multiple bills at Phoenix Children's Hospital, both in urgent care and regular office visits. We've now had three negative experiences, two at urgent care and one at a doctor's office visit. What seems like a straightforward visit does not end with a standard co-pay. We received separate bills, including charges from individual physicians who saw our child. This was very different from other urgent cares and pediatric offices in the Valley, where costs are usually more predictable. Even routine services led to additional and unexpected charges. It felt like everything was billed separately, and the total added up quickly. We were not clearly told ahead of time which services would result in extra or separate fees. We were also told we could significantly reduce a bill if we paid immediately, which felt coercive and left a bad impression. Overall, this experience was far less transparent than what we've encountered with other providers. Because of this, we will not be returning. If you do go here, I recommend asking very specific questions about billing and potential charges before agreeing to any services. read more

Good doctors. Good nurses. Except for the guy who tried to put IV in my son's hand and couldn't get the vein after minutes!! They had to give him pain meds and do the same thing to his other hand.. I had to leave the room after the 1st hand to tend to the 11 month old and because watch him dig into his arm that long My wife's mom cant sleep in the room with my 2 sons?!?! My son is was on the verge of emergency surgery but getting better. Night 1 and 2 no problem... night 3 after going to check on my dogs and showering... Me the dad of those 2 boys and my wife... and im not allowed in because it's 8 o clock at night.. with a 11 month old that needs constant attention...and a 4 year old hooked up to IV and I cant go into the room with my son. I've been here more than three times and each time is the WORST time ever. It gets worse EVERY time. The nurses here will judge you. My first time here at 1am I accidentally said "Morten's" instead of "Motrin" then corrected myself... and the nurses started talking about it as if I wasn't waiting right there. Now fast forward to RIGHT NOW 12:31am, took forever to get a room... now we've spent almost an hour waiting for someone to come in and our son is CRYING sooo loud. Everyone is just passing by. Literally want to just leave because of how much he's been crying. Literally almost two hours waiting. Not to mention one person will check you in and another "nurse" will start asking questions while you're checking in. Like be sooo for real. If you're not gonna take my child in asap why even come up to us during check in? There's a lot of sick kids tonight, I get that, but it has never taken this long. With our baby crying, nobody has been any type of help to us. He's been crying since the lobby area. Here our the text messages from the text. Look at the time stamps along with the time above when I took this screenshot. They let THREE people get a room before us. Yes I am mad. This was a terrible experience. Literally waited like 3 hours (at this point) for a 10 min talk, no medication given because "there's nothing we can do" for what he has. Can't even get a nasal cleaning because he's been crying soo much I want to take him home now. I only come here for my child's well being and they don't even care when he's been crying for 2 hours straight. He literally needed very little attention and it took three hours to be seen. On June 7, 2026 my son suffered a grand mal seizure, fell in the shower, and injured his back. EMS transported him to Phoenix Childrens Hospital and informed staff about the fall and severe back pain. I repeatedly requested that his back be evaluated because he felt pain in that area & had visible bruising and bleeding, but no X-ray, CT scan, or MRI was performed. Before discharge, I also requested rescue seizure medication and was told the hospital could only send a prescription to Walgreens for pickup the next day. My son was discharged without imaging and without rescue medication. About 10 minutes later, he suffered another grand mal seizure in our vehicle. EMS transported him to St. Joseph's Hospital/Barrow Neurological Institute, where imaging revealed multiple spinal fractures, including two lumbar burst fractures and cervical fractures. I believe Phoenix Childrens failed to adequately evaluate and treat his injuries and discharged him prematurely. read more

Went here to volunteer for an event and was given a tour of the hospital. This is a beautiful building that has put a lot of money into serving families and making everyone feel like they belong. They see so many people everyday and always seem to be welcoming, caring, and thoughtful. They have all levels of care here so it's really like a one stop hospital. Extremely fraudulent billing practices with horrible customer service. We were transferred here by honor health Shea, for a delicate procedure on my 4 year olds eye. We waited 5 hours, and when the doctor saw her they decided not to perform the procedure, saying it was healing on its own. We were then sent a bill for thousands of dollars for the procedure that was not performed, and if we paid it within two days of receiving the bill, the payment would be half. A false billing, then coupled with a scare tactic, urgency and extreme penalty. That is exactly what scammers do. I called the hospital, and said this procedure was never performed, and they said " oh, well, that was a clerical error. The bill is the same but it's a different code" - absolutely no way a visit with zero services performed would cost thousands of dollars. This review is solely for Susan L. Pepp, NP with the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) team at Phoenix Children's Hospital. It does not reflect on the institution as a whole, but rather my personal experience under her care. I was referred to the ACHD team due to confirmed congenital heart anomalies, including a bidirectional shunt across the atrial septum, a positive bubble study, and desaturation with exertion. I am also currently pregnant, with additional documentation showing a 6-minute walk test at 58% predicted and ECG abnormalities consistent with right heart strain. Despite all of this, Susan Pepp greeted me with: "We're the third cardiologist you've seen -- what do you want?" Her tone was immediately dismissive and confrontational. Rather than review my complete history or recent imaging, she made assumptions and prematurely concluded that nothing was wrong -- even stating that bidirectional shunting at rest is normal, which contradicts current cardiology and pulmonary hypertension guidelines. She also stated that my 6-minute walk test was "normal," despite a result that places me in WHO Functional Class III, and claimed that my ECGs were fine, suggesting any abnormalities were likely "lead variation." This dismisses a documented progression of findings that span over 17 years. Most concerning: no repeat bubble study was performed, despite a known history of positive results, and no referral was made for right heart catheterization or transesophageal echo, which are the standard of care in cases of suspected pulmonary hypertension or Eisenmenger physiology -- especially during pregnancy. The accompanying sonographer even commented that a prior documented congenital anomaly (persistent LSVC) must have been a hallucination by the previous tech -- a grossly unprofessional and inappropriate comment, especially since that finding had been confirmed by a cardiologist just one day earlier. The visit left me feeling gaslit, dismissed, and profoundly unsafe. I have since filed a formal complaint with Patient Relations and the Arizona Board of Nursing due to concerns over both clinical negligence and unprofessional conduct. I share this in the hopes that others seeking care with the ACHD team are aware that not all providers practice with the diligence, objectivity, or compassion that complex patients deserve. If you are someone with rare findings, a nuanced presentation, or a need for careful coordination -- be cautious in placing your trust here. read more

Dr. Melissa Esparza has no bedside manner, put on a cast while my childs hand was still swelling from the trauma of the break which caused my son to have to return to the hospital less than 4 hours after being discharged. Then proceeded to bill for a doctors visit on the date we came into the emergency room. We never met with her until the following day. Now the billing department is claiming I never paid the bill when everything is paid in full. Not only do they need to organize their billing department, but also not falsify doctor visits. read more

The staff's attention to detail and care toward us and our dilemma was second to none, the parking was manageable, and the security measures in place seemed squared away. The food service provided had many choices to choose from/how to order it; think Trader Joe's but with affordable prices. Not vying for a return trip, but this would be our 1st choice. And once again, I'm left waiting in the waiting room for 4+ hours to get my kid in, and every single time it's because somebody else is sicker comes in Right before they call my name.. I understand that children and really bad health states need attention immediately, but they need to figure out a plan where they're not leaving other families waiting for a lifetime to get in. Today our sweet Granddaughter went home. After 9 weeks in the NICU at Phoenix Childrens Hospital.. As her grandparents it was so hard to watch her go through so much as a newborn. So difficult to watch our oldest son and daughter-in-law go through this as well. Thankfully there were so many amazing nurses and doctors caring for her. Through surgeries, and bringing her through full respiratory and cardiac codes. Learning about her future care and some of the hurdles yet to jump. She is so strong and our kids are so strong and the staff at PCH helped us all stay so strong. We went everyday to relieve them for 4 to 5 hours and the nurses and doctors were so supportive and caring. It was one of the hardest experiences we have had but also one of the most rewarding. Received test results for our girls. They are celiac and were dealing with constipation and eating like horses but not thriving in weight and height. Though their hair and nails grow like crazy especially when we stay away from problematic foods. Lots of new food sensitivities and allergies. Came last September. The office called to give us the results and everything looked good. Even not taking a multivitamin. I asked about getting more help and testing. I was told to follow up with a natural practitioner and maybe order MAPS testing. I was really sad that we go to PCH and are rushed in and out. No answers and not able to dig deeper. I let them know I was willing to pay put of pocket if it was an insurance thing. I do when we see natural practitioners. When I think of PCH I think digging deep, finding answers, communicating with other specialists. It is not the case. Back to square one. At least I know that they are getting proper nutrition and everything is looking good so far. read more

PCH is amazing. "Hope and healing" is a motto they live up to. My daughter has a rare genetic condition and sees 16 specialists/therapists, most of whom are at PCH. For the first 18 months of her life, we could not get an insurance plan with PCH in network and finding the right care was a constant struggle. Once we were able to get a plan that included PCH, our lives were totally transformed. Getting to see specialists here and use the ER here has drastically reduced stress for me, and my daughter has blossomed. Her health issues have been systematically addressed and we have seen incredible improvement. We have never had a bad experience with a provider. The people here genuinely care and collaborate with me to find solutions, even when answers are elusive. Thanks for what you do! read more

Phoenix Children's hospital is outstanding in all areas but Psychiatry. Every single doctor and the entire hospital staff is amazing, but Psychiatry is just awful for kiddos on the Autism Spectrum. They need to clean up this department. There are better Doctors who know more to help kiddos on the Spectrum---that will collaborate with others in the community, and listen when things aren't working, especially to the parents. One of their doctors has a huge ego, and is rigid in his thinking. PCH deserves better doctors to help kiddos in the valley on the Autism Spectrum. It is a great disappointment for this amazing Children's hospital. read more

In December we took our son to the Arrowhead campus ER because he was really sick with a virus. They were very thorough with his exam. They then wanted to keep him overnight for some fluids, and then the hospital stay turned into "let's figure out why he's so tiny" mind you he was 6 years old, almost 7 (Jan was his 7th birthday) and he was barely 38lbs and really short for his age. They ran so many tests but all came back normal, but during one of the nights of our 5 day hospital stay he was in tachycardia all night so they gave him two rounds of Bolus, to try and slow his heart rate down. Didn't work. So the next morning they asked if they could do an echocardiogram on his heart and make sure everything was okay. Within 30 minutes of them being finished they came back to tell us our son had been born with an extremely rare heart defect, called Cor Triatriatum, which can cause failure to thrive. Also a long list of other issues, including the "exercise induced asthma" all his pediatricians would say he had. They were quick with getting us scheduled and prepped for his surgery to repair his heart. Fast forward to February 18th when he had his open heart surgery, I was EXTREMELY nervous and terrified because my babies life was in their hands. They said they'll text me with updates throughout the surgery, but instead the nurse with them was so kind and knew I would appreciate them calling me instead and she called me once he was asleep, said he fell asleep laughing, which is amazing because my boy wasn't scared at all and felt comfortable with everyone there, which is rare since he's a shy boy for the most part. She called once they started, when he was put on bypass, again when he was off bypass, and again when they were stitching him up. His surgeon, Dr. Mohamad Alaeddine came out after the surgery to let us know he did great, and everything went well, and shook our hands. Later while my son was in the ICU we had an amazing nurse, who talked us through everything, I wish for the life of me I could remember her name, but I met so many people that week that I can't remember. But she honestly was a heaven sent. My son had to eventually have a blood transfusion after surgery which went well as well, and they were quick to notice he needed it. Without hesitation she ordered blood for my baby boy. All our nurses were great, caring and just all around amazing. Also, a HUGE shout out to Reba, the child life specialist who took so much time out to spend with my son, and he absolutely LOVED HER so much. He connected so much with her and enjoyed every moment with her. He's a tad sad he won't be able to see her everyday anymore but she will always have a special place in his special heart. Thank you so much to PCH, Dr. Alaeddine, and all the staff who took such great care of us. We truly appreciate all of you, and thank you so much for saving my son's life and giving him a second chance at a normal life. WE LOVE PCH! read more

Best place for kids to be when they are not their best! My kid was diagnosed with bronchitis when she was 2 years old. Asthma soon took affect. Her breathing was so bad we would be in the hospital twice a month every month till she was 4, now she's 6. The severity of her asthma took a toll on me and I'm sure for her as toddler she was really miserable. It would get to the point when her Chest would have tightness or, chest retractions that doesn't deflate when exhaling. Her symptoms would scare me so bad I wouldn't sleep. Wasn't till we went to the Phoenix Children's Hospital where we received a medical plan. Her medical planned described her plan from as little as a running nose to severity as in no breathing. So detailed the planned was it listed steps and check points when it come to asthma. It was a great plan. The doctors and nurse were awesome and very patient. With the medical Plan in placed I felt more confident and comfortable when it came to my kids diagnosis. Having a hospital dedicated specifically for kiddos is a MUST! staff is amazing for patient care for billing and admitted. There are much more to be desired for administration and insurance unbelievably bad. It is now a patience issue because they don't wanna settle with Blue Cross Blue Shield that we need to pay for everything upfront again worse billing department whoever makes the decisions on contracts needs to have his head checked or just needs to be fired. I have been here twice and both time were very upsetting. The nurses don't listen to you. The moment I said I was a first time mom everything else I said didn't matter. I came in because my 2 week old was very sick. They told me "use a nose bulb to clear his nose" and asked if I wanted to test to see what virus he had. I said yes! They left and came back with my discharge paperwork. No tests were done. I was already there for 4 hours I wanted to go home. I went in today because I believe my son has flu. (Me and my husband tested positive yesterday) I told the dr that as well. The checked his vital, put us in a room for an hour and then sent us home again without swabbing. ( I'm going to his pediatrician tomorrow because they WILL) and then sent me home paperwork for a cold even though I stated multiple time I believe it's the flu. He has all the same symptoms as me and my husband ( fever, hot flashes, chills, sleepiness, cough, runny nose) They don't care about their patients. They don't spend enough time trying to evaluate the problems. read more

Hopefully, you never need to bring your child here. Had an appointment with Dr. Kamran Ahmed in Opthalmology. After waiting an hour-and-a-half, we were called to front desk where the receiptionist told us the doctor was overbooked. She tried to make another appointment for us, but gave the excuse, "The computer is down so I can't book another appointment for you someone from scheduling will call you to make another appointment." Yeah. Fat chance. Of course nobody called back. Never booked another appointment, and will never be back. This place has gone downhill, and would probably harm your child. read more

Had to get my son a new cast because he got his wet. Everyone from the person that checked us in to the staff in the casting room were so nice and a pleasure to deal with. He is pretty young so they offered toys to distract him and they were super sweet to him. Just a great overall experience with them. read more
