I have spent months struggling with health insurance, red tape, and clerical errors that weren't…read moremine but left me without insurance. I was at my wit's end recently after being told that I had missed open enrollment (despite having applied before the deadline), and that I couldn't get an exception made. I have medications that I had to stop cold turkey months ago and have been without, and have been dealing with health issues I couldn't really afford to get care for because I was told I had to wait until November for open enrollment to start again. I posted on Facebook asking friends for advice, assuming it was pointless. But then one of them said I should look into a broker - an option I had no idea was available, nor that it was free. I looked through a list of brokers and found Gary Franke and his team; they sounded good, so I requested help from them. And thank god I did, because I tell you what - after months of metaphorically pulling my hair out over how stressful the runaround of insurance was, especially when I don't have much knowledge on the subject - Gary Franke and Heffernan Insurance Brokers had me squared away in a few emails and a single phone call. I couldn't believe how simple the process was. Gary got my information - how much I make a year, what exactly I'm looking for / need help with - and narrowed the insurance plans down to two that he said would be the most affordable and the most helpful for me based on my needs. Then all I had to do was choose from the two, let him know, and he got me enrolled and activated. No fuss, no stress. He was friendly, empathetic, understanding, and answered all of my questions thoroughly and without judgement - even the ones I personally thought were probably dumb questions. He was even willing to discuss my options with a family member that has been trying to help me with the process of getting on insurance, if she had any other questions she wanted to ask him. Even after I was on an active plan, Gary and his team have encouraged me to come to them if I have any further questions, and made sure I know they're available for any other advice I may need in the future. In conclusion, I literally cannot recommend Gary Franke and his team enough. They got done in less than a week - and only took as long as that because I had to make my choice on the plans and slept on it - what I was on the verge of a breakdown trying to do on my own for months. If any of the many people I had spoken to on the myriad of phone calls with WA Healthplan Finder, or any of the insurance companies, had just once suggested a broker, I could have escaped so much stress. If you're on the fence about a broker - do it. It's so worth it, and you can't go wrong with Heffernan Insurance Brokers, and Gary Franke and his team. They are extremely knowledgeable about all this stuff, and genuinely want to help you with what you need and where you're at. There's a reason they have so many 5-star reviews here; and I promise that those reviews are telling the truth, because I know mine is. Reach out to them. I promise you won't regret it.

New to the game I was unaware broker's fees are paid by the health insurance companies. Tamara, who works with Gary, was the agent of record and did a good. However, months after I get a call from Gary stating, "Tamara forgot to bill you." Not knowing, I gave him my credit card info and was billed $75... Pretty slimy for a whopping $75. I would have sued if still live nearby.

Our policies had a ton of minor errors that we had go back and forth to get rectified. The policies were all suddenly purchased without me OK-ing their purchase. I had asked them to wait until I made a decision on all my policy limits and then have them be purchased at the same time. I didnt complain since it saved me money, but when the policies came back I found a bunch of small errors. Tyler's team member claimed that it was fine for me to sign an incorrect declarations since they would be eventually corrected. You wont get responses to emails and then 3-4 days later a lot of things will happen without announcement or confirmation. I had to keep changing email subject lines to get their attention. Even after escalating to Tyler, and him confirming that the policy had been fixed, the policy still didnt have the requested changes. Their portal will have a partial view of the policies which defeats the purpose of having a single portal to get access to all policies. The absolute worst part about this is they don't seem to think any of it is their fault/problem unless you press them hard on it. No apologies, no acknowledgement of failures, nothing! It also makes me feel that is how they expect to operate and feel that you are being unreasonable expecting this level of care, concern and accuracy. Given all of this, I would be super worried about working with this group when I actually have a claim to file.

After all the excitement has wind down, I sat in front of my computer and started searching for an insurance company. I first tried Geico and progressive, but I got overwhelmed when it asked me to choose my coverage. I mean, I don't even know what "liability" or" deductible" even mean, how am I suppose to know what kind of coverages I need. Then my friend was like, "you should get an insurance agent locally so that you have someone to answer your questions". Therefore I googled insurance agent near where I live. About a phone call and a day later I ended up having an appointment with my lovely agent Jeanie at her office on Bel Red road. Although I speaks English fluently, but my first language is Chinese, I was super confused when it comes to insurance terms. Luckily, her staff speaks Chinese was able to explain terminology in Chinese as well. When I first arrived, I didn't feel pushed to buy anything at all. There was just casual chatting, they all seems super nice and genial. They offered me coffee and tea and chocolate. I truly feel like I was treated as a friend. The most amazing part is that, American family insurance has the CHEAPEST rates for first time car buyers. Jeanie told me whether you just landed from another country, or you are buying your first car in your life, their company don't treat you as someone who has no insurance history. I mean Geico's quote for me was over $300 a month, even state farm's quote was $250. That's just not something a fresh out of college student can afford right now. My overall experience with my agent has been amazing so far. They are always fast at answer my emails, and address any concerns I may have. I will definitely come back and update more of my experience in the future. And i would definitely recommend her to my friends and family.

I took my kitten in for sneezing--her first vet visit--and got hit with a $215 bill. That's just one example. On top of that, the insurance doesn't cover allergies or anything they decide counts as a pre-existing condition. After that, I called to say I wasn't planning to keep the policy. The rep said the first month was free, and that if I wanted to continue, I just needed to call. I never called because I didn't like their terms. He assured me the policy would only continue if I called in, and otherwise, it would cancel automatically. August 3rd was the cutoff. By August 5th, I noticed a charge on my account and was totally confused. One of my other pets had been dropped, but my kitten was still showing as active. I called to clear things up, explaining that I never called to continue. The person on the phone said, "We still have your kitten's policy active because you never canceled it!" What kind of mixed messages are they sending? I asked them to check their call recordings. The next rep tried to tell me I'd used the policy--because I paid the full $215 vet bill! She then claimed my deductible was $150, not $250. That's simply not true. They didn't pay a cent, and my deductible was supposed to be $250. It's infuriating that they get away with this stuff. They change the rules based on the situation. I hope this company goes out of business. They're dishonest and seem to change their rules to fit the situation. I told them I wasn't paying, but they still charged me $100.13 for one month! They need to be held accountable. I disputed the charge for three reasons: first, they never paid anything and their deductible changed from $150 to $250 the day I took my cat in! Secondly, they lied about the deductible; third, the "lifetime deductible" they promised turned out to be a separate deductible for each illness. So if my pet got sick with five different things, I'd have to pay $500 for each one. That's outrageous. And they keep insisting it's a "lifetime" deductible, even though it resets every time my pet gets a new diagnosis. So if my cat had an ear infection one month ($200 out of pocket), and a respiratory infection the next, that first $200 doesn't count towards the next deductible. If I had to go in for four different illnesses, I'd end up paying $2,000 and still not reach my deductible--because each illness has its own. It's a complete scam. Read the fine print. This company is a master at ripping people off. Stay far away. They're unethical, and everyone you speak to seems to make up their own rules. As many people have said, they always have the perfect excuse to get out of paying. I wish I read the negative reviews before jumping on this stressful wagon!!
