After months of paying premiums I submitted two claims totaling $379.63 for acute diarrhea and conjunctivitis. Both were denied as pre-existing conditions. I appealed twice, including submitting a formal letter from my veterinarian who specifically stated that diagnostic testing showed NO evidence of permanent intestinal damage from parvo and that the conjunctivitis cause was unspecified. Both appeals were denied. I received zero coverage after paying $190 in premiums. Trupanion is not appropriate for rescue dogs with any medical history. Save your money and go with Fetch instead -- they actually built their insurance specifically for rescue pets. read more

Do not get Trupanion for your pets. The only reason we still have this insurance is because we enrolled when our dogs were young and healthy. At this point, switching providers would mean all of their existing health conditions would become "pre-existing," so we feel completely stuck. Not only is Trupanion significantly more expensive than many other pet insurance companies, but they also constantly make billing and coverage mistakes and then refuse to correct them without forcing customers through a lengthy appeals process. The worst part is that whenever Trupanion makes an error, the burden falls entirely on pet owners and veterinarians to fix it. Their appeal process requires doctors and staff, already working exhausting schedules, to spend additional time contacting the insurance company, submitting documentation, and explaining issues that were caused by Trupanion in the first place. Just today, we were incorrectly charged a $500 deductible for treatment related to my dog's chronic condition, a condition he has been treated for over 8 years, and for which the deductible had already been satisfied long ago. The paperwork from the veterinary hospital was filled out correctly from the start. This was clearly a Trupanion system or billing error. Now, after spending all day in and out of surgeries, someone from the surgery department has to take time to contact Trupanion to correct their mistake. That is unacceptable. Trupanion should be responsible for fixing its own billing errors, not veterinarians or exhausted pet owners. Their entire business model seems to rely on customers giving up on the long, frustrating appeals process and simply paying bills that should have been covered in the first place. These guys increase your premium practically every year. I have only needed to use the insurance twice (fortunately), but predictably, they raise your premium if you use it. I could pay less with a new insurance company, but if I switch, my dog can no longer get treatment covered for the only thing I've needed to use the insurance for (because it's now a pre-existing condition). It states spay/neuter is covered with select plan add ons. Originally signed up in a state that had NO rehab centers so I did not choose this option when enrolling any of my pets. I just recently moved from one state to another.. I called them to change my address and I was surprised to learn that because I moved to a new state they have increased my monthly premiums to $473.08 per month. Wow! Ok. Why? "Well because prices for vets in your new state are more expensive." NOT TRUE.. in fact the opposite is true. Cheaper in my new state than old state. "Well, it's also because we factor in how many other claims we get from that area." So I'm being charged more because of other people??? None of it makes sense. Dog (small breed, mutt, neutered) ate... something bad. Got stuck in his stomach/upper intestine. This required a surgery and hospitalization costing several thousand dollars. Trupanion paid out same day (to the vet, actually) for exactly what they said they would (in our case 90% after $1k deductible). ER vet then refunded what I had put down before the surgery. I am updating my review of Trupanion, having received this little message from them yesterday: "To ensure that Frankie always has access to the best veterinary care possible, we'll be changing Frankie's monthly cost from $184.11 to $237.81 starting on December 19, 2025." Two hundred and thirty seven dollars and eighty one cents monthly for this: our plan does NOT include any exam fees (even at an emergency hospital); it does NOT include any preventative care such as shots or wellness care; we must pay $500 per incident (not yearly). Now that our beloved dog is 14 (he was enrolled as a puppy), there is nothing Trupanion would love more than for us to balk at the constant fee hikes and drop the program.
