I signed up for a free 30-day trial, and when I spoke with a representative, they told me the "free" insurance came with a $250 deductible. I took my kitten in for sneezing--her first vet visit--and got hit with a $215 bill. That's just one example. On top of that, the insurance doesn't cover allergies or anything they decide counts as a pre-existing condition. After that, I called to say I wasn't planning to keep the policy. The rep said the first month was free, and that if I wanted to continue, I just needed to call. I never called because I didn't like their terms. He assured me the policy would only continue if I called in, and otherwise, it would cancel automatically. August 3rd was the cutoff. By August 5th, I noticed a charge on my account and was totally confused. One of my other pets had been dropped, but my kitten was still showing as active. I called to clear things up, explaining that I never called to continue. The person on the phone said, "We still have your kitten's policy active because you never canceled it!" What kind of mixed messages are they sending? I asked them to check their call recordings. The next rep tried to tell me I'd used the policy--because I paid the full $215 vet bill! She then claimed my deductible was $150, not $250. That's simply not true. They didn't pay a cent, and my deductible was supposed to be $250. It's infuriating that they get away with this stuff. They change the rules based on the situation. I hope this company goes out of business. They're dishonest and seem to change their rules to fit the situation. I told them I wasn't paying, but they still charged me $100.13 for one month! They need to be held accountable. I disputed the charge for three reasons: first, they never paid anything and their deductible changed from $150 to $250 the day I took my cat in! Secondly, they lied about the deductible; third, the "lifetime deductible" they promised turned out to be a separate deductible for each illness. So if my pet got sick with five different things, I'd have to pay $500 for each one. That's outrageous. And they keep insisting it's a "lifetime" deductible, even though it resets every time my pet gets a new diagnosis. So if my cat had an ear infection one month ($200 out of pocket), and a respiratory infection the next, that first $200 doesn't count towards the next deductible. If I had to go in for four different illnesses, I'd end up paying $2,000 and still not reach my deductible--because each illness has its own. It's a complete scam. Read the fine print. This company is a master at ripping people off. Stay far away. They're unethical, and everyone you speak to seems to make up their own rules. As one can see, Trupanions team publicly responded to my initial review, stating that the grace period issue was just policy and that there wasn't anything to be done, but that they were there for any issues that pop up after the grace period is over! Well, I'm here to say that they were lying! What is advertised as comfortable and extensive coverage has ended up being more of a headache than is worth the almost 600 bucks a year that I'm paying. My dog ended up swallowing more than her fair share of plastic which required an emergency endoscopic retrieval, and the overall cost was over $3k. I paid the $1800 deductible, so I guess if I have to get her stomach pumped again I'll be in luck, but after that, I was expecting 90% of the leftover cost. Well, actually no, because my policy doesn't cover exam fees, the vet visit that determined whether my dog needed surgery technically isn't covered under the "routine care" clause. So my payout only ended up covering less than a third of my overall cost. Be sure to read the fine print with these people, they're obviously not here to help, they only want your money. It states spay/neuter is covered with select plan add ons. We felt like we did all the additional coverage for the plans we selected and come to find out in the add-ons it specifically excluded spay/neuter from covered surgeries. Very displeased with the prices if what we need most for younger dogs isn't covered. Originally signed up in a state that had NO rehab centers so I did not choose this option when enrolling any of my pets. I just recently moved from one state to another.. I rescued Pepper in November 2025 and enrolled with Trupanion in March 2026. She had parvo before I adopted her. After months of paying premiums I submitted two claims totaling $379.63 for acute diarrhea and conjunctivitis. Both were denied as pre-existing conditions. I appealed twice, including submitting a formal letter from my veterinarian who specifically stated that diagnostic testing showed NO evidence of permanent intestinal damage from parvo and that the conjunctivitis cause was unspecified. Both appeals were denied. I received zero coverage after paying $190 in premiums. Trupanion is not appropriate for rescue dogs with any medical history. Very Cocky Customer service and A Huge Scam..Joined up and 5 days later i called to cancel because of wellness (NOT) Covered and You be lucky to find a vet that deals with them, Now i Know why..They suck!!! asked for a full refund and after 3 calls they only refunded half the money i paid to sign up without ever seeing a vet.. 5 days after signing up.
