I only came here after-hours for the dancing with a live DJ. This place is a bar turned dance-floor by taking away all the tables and chairs so don't expect much more than that. It still has your typical sticky beer-filled floors. I had a pretty great time, the DJ played a good number of modern and oldie songs which I liked. Soccer bar. Enough said. There is no atmosphere quite like the Phoenix Landing to watch a soccer game. I visited here a few times for the 2010 World Cup and it was always a blast. You have to show up very early for Liverpool, England or USA games but I promise you it is always worth it. The singing, the chanting and the camaraderie are the essentials that make it a great soccer bar. Additionally, there is a great and currently expanding beer selection including some from my hometown's brewery, Goose Island, from which they have 312 and Mathilda. I haven't tried much of the food here besides the Breakfast Pizza, which was definitely delicious, and was a great bellyfiller while waiting for the 2010 World Cup Final match. I wish there were more bars like this in Boston, but for now, I'll have to stick with the trek to Phoenix Landing. read more

I love my husband. I also love that he's getting me more into the English Premier League. I'm from Boston, and peeps give me dirty a** looks when I say I don't watch the Bruins, Celtics, The Red Sox or the Pats. I don't go to superbowl parties or games in general because they don't interest me and I don't like the hype. Yelpers, please don't take that the wrong way. I'm a European sports gal, and that won't change. The fact that my husband is the same way I am is even better :) Anyway! This bar has mega huge TVs, and their brunch is delish. One of their dishes was super huge and I'm glad we shared it. The crowd is pretty fun on game days...there's rugby on one side and then football...er...sorry, soccer on the other side. After reading the mostly positive reviews for this place, my friends who were visiting Boston and I decided to give this place a shot to grab a drink as most other places were closed. Our first mistake was going here on a Sunday. Everything else is dead in town except for the creepers were out on the prowl... They have several large TVs around so it would be good for Sports along with a dance floor that they start the music later at night. During the entire time I was with my friends there was a man who kept walking by us several times and telling and pointing out to us "That's my son" from across the bar. Once we realized the music they were playing for 80s night wasn't quite our jam we were ready to head home. On our way out one of the managers calls out to us, "Wait ladies...! We are just about to put on the good music!" Nope, nope, nope! Way too many creepy vibes for us for that one night. Well, this place was pretty decent until we literally had the chairs we were sitting on taken away from us. I guess it turns into more of a college bar scene after 10pm? We were grabbing a night cap drink after dinner to watch the World Series. All of a sudden, a crowd of recently 21-ers descended on the place, were loud and very drunk, and kept bumping into people trying to enjoy the game sitting at the bar. To top it off, a staff member starting telling all the people sitting at the bar he had to take their chairs away. Very strange. 3 maybe 4 stars, but with 200+ reviews, what does it really matter? I went here to see the pats vs. jesus game, good times, not so much for any broncos fans, but they werent there anyway. by the time we got there, it was about 430 or so on a sunday. colleges just let out, so i bet that had something to do with the ease of parking/no lines/etc. pretty quiet inside, sure there were fans here and there. they have several tvs, hd quality which is important. they also have the grand viewing screen for i guess the lucky party who gets there early enough, we did not. I was sitting at a high top smack in the middle of the place, it was tough to focus on the game as there were 6 other tv's showing 3 different games. was that their fault? no, but i wish the viewing was less stimulating. I had a few pops while i was there, good selection, i had this peak organic nut brown ale, pretty good. they had several others i would have like to try, but the whole driving thing was also important to me too. I had their fish tacos for dinner, not bad, not great. i think the catfish fillets they use could have been a touch better quality, but all in all good. others had the burger, which i would have liked, and the fries they served look awesome. they also have sweet potato puffs, which i really wanted, so i ordered them on the side, and i got sweet potato fries instead, which came from a bag, you can tell. the puffs would have also, but i wanted them!!! no worries, it was ok. service was decent, for a dead sunday night, i expected a little more, but so is life. that is all. read more

Fun little bar in Central. It does get a bit crowded, and the service can be either super friendly (last time our waitress was literally singing and dancing as she approached our table) or non existent (I've waited a long time for beers at the bar before). At happy hour, its surprisingly quiet. They have awesome deals on happy hour apps (chicken fingers which are mediocre, Humus and Feta with Pita and olives that is awesome, Fries and Curry, fries were good curry sucked etc) for 3-4 dollars. Beers are under 5 bucks, which is always impressive for the area. Great place... but do not come here at night, it just gets obnoxious, and is not worth the cover. I've been here a couple times for after work debriefs, and it serves it's purpose. Their happy hour menu has awesome deals on small plates (fish tacos and bacon croquettes for days- although I'm not sure how much bacon is really in them) and the drink menu, while not amazing, is sufficient. The service is mediocre, but not terrible. The first time we went- we had a large party and it was the waitress' first day. She was super good to us, but things moved slow. The last time, it was fine but the waitress we had was quiet, and seemed sort of awkward about asking us if we needed anything, and I had to ask for a glass for my beer. It's a little cramped in terms of access- the only time I brought my scooter here was when we were able to eat outside, but I don't think my larger model would fit inside really without causing a disturbance about having to park it. I haven't been here for dancing or the club scene so I can't speak to that, but this is definitely a decent place to go to unwind after work. It definitely won't make my top 10 though. read more

Since I'm from the tri-state area, my opinion about this place has to do with that and "wtf" experience I had at Phoenix Landing. After the comedy show, my friend decided to check out this club and it had really good reviews so why not. I should've known something was up when you see people with basketball shorts, baseball caps and muscle tees lining up outside the club. The only rule that they had was no backpacks allowed. Honestly you were dressed like that to any bar or club in New Jersey or New York, you will be turned down. We waited on the line for about 30 mins. We had to wait until people left the place so more people can enter. The entrance fee was $5, which was reasonable. BUT the music seriously seriously seriously sucked. I felt like I was at a frat party with like a disco ball and strobe lights flashing. Like wtf 4.5 for this vibe? The songs went from Panic At the Disco to DMX to Blink 182. The DJ sucked big time. People were grinding to the song Blink 182. You got 30 year old guys trying to hit on just turned 21 years olds. The dance floor was too packed and barely any space around the bar because of the dance floor. Never again will I come to this place. It just gave me WTF vibes all through and through. read more

The friday and saturday DJ, DJ vinny is the whole reason for this 2 stars. He can't DJ. Doesnt transition songs, throws unnecessary flanges to ruin the songs, misses beat drops, stops songs in the middle to silence and mix in something completely different bpm, no fading, he just stops immediately silence, plays the ENTIRE SONG NOT KNOWING THE CROWD IS ALREADY BORED. He kills the song when the song is at its hyped moment. He pretends to lisiten to his headphone with one ear, like he is trying to mix songs, but the music says otherwise. He has an amazing turntable, but he was choosing songs with his Iphone. Thats a problem, screw DJ Vinny, please get a new DJ. Spotify mixes better than him. But he played Africa by Toto, thats why i gave the extra star because it was lit. That aside, without the friday dance floor, the bar was enjoyable, hope the drinks were stronger for its price. Have you ever looked into the Phoenix Landing on a weekend morning? Would it shock you hear that this dingy dirty little Irish bar can often be standing-room only at 9am on a Sunday? I've even seen a line outside for the 8am opening - and even joined it. It's all because the Phoenix is THE place in New England to watch the live football of Old England. On a typical Saturday morning they can show 3 or 4 games from 8am to 1pm and they usually don't charge a cover unlike other bars can. You can fore-go natural light and the first several hours of your weekend to have a great time watching the games, talking to the ex-pat football addicts around you and getting free refills of coffee with your run-of-the-mill cholesterol-busting Irish breakfast. For the full experience try to go when Liverpool are playing a key match against another big team such as Arsenal. The Phoenix has it's own Liverpool supporters club who are always there, complete with customised T-shirts, 9am Guinnesses and singing songs throughout the game. It's the kind of sports atmosphere you have to see to believe. read more

Phoenix Landing reminds me of Superman. Bear with me here. By day its unassuming Clark Kent. They serve traditional English Breakfast's with a side of Guinness while you watch the Premier League at 10am. Their food is OK, their demeanor a little rowdy (if its a good game), and in general its pretty pleasant. But come nightfall Phoenix Landing rushes to the nearest phone booth, rips off its suit and tie and becomes a raging mess of flashing lights, pounding bass and cheap beer that has been dropped on the ground..... OK so I lost the Superman metaphor but you get the idea. Overall I like both sides of Pheonix Landing, even if the evening crowd can be a little rediculous and the bouncers mostly seem pissed at everyone in the place. read more

I was looking for a good happy hour (cheap food, not booze, being in the Boston area) and a group of us tried out this place. It was not too busy on Wednesday night and there were plenty of little space heaters spread out around the area. There's a separate section of happy hour plates with lots of fried goodies/appetizers - fish cakes, garlic fries, hummus plate, tortilla chips with green tomatillo salsa, and burgers - all about half their regular price. Good selection of beers on tap - Newcastle, Stella, Harpoon, and Magners. We stayed for a few hours hanging out and having fun chats with our waitress. It was a really chill place with great music mostly reminiscent of childhood/adolescence for me like No Doubt and Michael Jackson, but it wasn't too loud as to prevent conversation. They seem to have a lot of dance nights here with house and drum and bass in which the tables and chairs get moved and people actually dance. The first time I was here was when I came up to the area to apt-hunt and they featured a session with a drummer who'd worked with tons of cool people. I came here on a random Thursday for the drum & bass night so I could dance like a well-caffeinated amoeba. The atmosphere was much like a typical run-down sports bar with a large dance floor and a stage for a DJ or a small band. I'm not sure what the typical crowd is like, but on this particular night it was fairly eclectic, ranging from straight up duders all the way to neckbeards and then back to hipsters. Somewhere in that triangular range is where I fit in, and it was surprisingly enjoyable. Within 10 minutes of entering the place I saw a blatant drug deal/pass right on the dance floor, and it set the right tone for the night. After another 20 minutes of dancing someone spilled their entire mixed drink on my back and then ran away. I like to think it was to cool down my hot as ice dance moves. Fortunately for me, I absorb alcohol through osmosis in a process I call awesomeosis. I probably won't be back, but if someone suggests coming here again, I would not protest. read more

As my first review I hate to rate this place so poorly, but on the two occasions that I've visited the Phoenix Landing I've wished I hadn't. I was originally lured here with the promise of good music and dancing, however, I made the mistake of showing up on the night they were playing top 40s. The choice of music was not my thing, but my bad for showing up on the wrong night. The second time I went here was a completely different story. This time I wasn't interested in dancing, I just wanted to sit at the bar and kill time until a friend got out of work. The problem with this plan was that the 3 sketchiest men in the world were at the bar. Man 1 = very very drunk man who kept telling me he loved me Man 2 = 45 year old man (only know the age because he kept telling me his age) who kept calling me darling *much rage* Man 3 = young man who made some really inappropriate sexual comments involving me and my scarf After feeling abased and afraid of being followed home and killed, I called a cab and left to meet my friend elsewhere (far away from said gentlemen). Needless to say I will not be coming back here again. Moral of the story: Thank you three men for reminding me why women can't go to bars, or enjoy a drink, by themselves. read more

The Phoenix lives by it's name. Although I've never seen it burn down, the menu changes every time I stop in. Another good name for the Phoenix might be Chameleon, because I swear this place transforms depending on the time of day and day of the week. Why? Might you ask? Well ... 1. During Happy Hour, from 5-7, Phoenix offers cheap-o apps. Recently, they changed happy hour from half-priced apps to an exclusive happy hour menu. Still, great deals, such as a $4 cheeseburger and fries. Great for groups. 2. Around 8-9 PM, the Phoenix begins to remove its tables, lower the lights, prop the stage for the DJ, and open the doors to the night prowlers. Stop in for 80s night and dance on the benches. 3. And, as Tom E. mentioned, and I have partaken, on the usual Saturday, this places opens up for English Premiere League Football. It truly is the place to be, no cover charge, and edible English breakfast. But beware, if you've got a ManU vs Liverpool matchup ... watch out for swinging fists! But all I can really attest to is Friday night, and that was just downright atroucious. Suffice it to say that I came here with two female friends and spent most of the night throwing blocks between them and the hordes of stereotypical drunk Boston dudes who were trying to grind everything that moved. And the music was the typical 80's Michael Jackson/Madonna/Sir Mix a Lot blend that you could stay home and hear on the radio. Sheesh, the ironic 80's revival has outlasted the 80's themselves. First off, the Phoenix Landing is the bar of the official Liverpool Supporters Club in Boston. They will show all Liverpool matches, even those that start really early in the morning. They also show other Premier League matches, and I've seen matches from Serie A and La Liga, but Liverpool will get priority for sound and screens. They have a good menu and cheap breakfast options, which is mostly what I end up ordering because I'm there so early. The staff is a really friendly and great bunch that work really hard. The service can be spotty during the Liverpool games on account of how many people they draw, so if you're planning on going for brunch I would check their site to see who's playing first. I haven't been here for a late night, but I was once leaving around 10 pm after the LFC Boston Christmas do. The one thing I will say about the crowd of people who came streaming in on a Saturday night... Eurotrashy. All in all, if you like Soccer/Football, yummy pub food, and a good atmosphere then I couldn't recommend a better place than The Landing. read more

I think Phoenix Landing may embody what I love about America I go here for one thing, dancing. Friday night is officially eighties night, though this translates into 80s+good music (they will, for instance, play all the Lady Gaga on their own volition). Here's what it's like: You pay $5 to get in. Check in your coat = $2 (plus $1 tip of course). I really appreciate not having to carry my coat around with me all night. There are people crowded around the bar (The bar prices are decent.) and the closer you get to DJ at the back, the more dancing there is. I just think the atmosphere of Phoenix Landing is fantastic - everyone there is just excited to be dancing with their friends. No one is trying to be cool. Okay, maybe they are, but if that means they're dancing harder, then I'm down. I go with my friends and we always dance our hearts out and have a blast. Phoenix Landing is not so much a concept bar as your neighborhood pub, nestled in bustling Central Square. They have something fun going on every day of the week, and there's really no theme to pull it all together--you get the idea that the owner(s) just do whatever they think is cool, and, well, they are usually right. They have live DJs every night of the week, everything from electronica (Sundays) and drum + bass (Thursdays - bring earplugs if you value your hearing) to reggae/dancehall (Mondays) and 80s/90s music (Friday AND Saturday). It's just a fun, fun place to go dancing. It's such a mixed crowd - Financial District types mingle with Cambridge/Somerville hipsters rub elbows with immigrants from Africa and Latin America. There's a bit of the meat market aspect but people aren't aggressive, nor are people generally jerks. The space is a big, empty room that people crowd into and dance. No particular decorations or structure to the area. It reminds me of a bunch of clubs I went to in New York (I told this to my dancing companion one night and he responded "Yeah, except everyone's dressed like shit"). When dancing is not occurring, there are tables in this space, for events such as pub trivia night (Wednesdays) and soccer games -- they televise every World Cup and Euro Cup game. Phoenix Landing has basic pub food: fish + chips, burgers, shepherd's pie. As the website proclaims -- an "alternative Irish bar." read more

On my last night living in Boston- I knew this is the place where I wanted to go! Weekend nights it turns into a rollicking good time. It's a pretty small place and the main floor gets cleared of tables and becomes a crowded dance floor with all sorts of music- usually a mix of new stuff and some random fun music thrown in from the 80s and 90s. On the side of the bar there is a bench built into the wall and you'll often find some people standing on there dancing too- but The Phoenix Landing doesn't have that "club" atmosphere at all, which I'd say is a bonus. The bartenders are all very cool and the prices are decent. The crowd is usually pretty cool (typically younger, single) and just looking to have fun. I'd say (particularly if you're in your 20s) a visit to Central Square would be incomplete without stopping here (and maybe having a little too much to drink). read more

This is the type of place that invites a good old-fashioned throwdown. It features DJs who play fist-pumping fan favorites on the weekends. In the year 2010, if a bar does not have a Touchtunes jukebox they are living in the past and don't deserve your business. This amazing music player taps into the technology of the internet machine and delivers an unlimited library of songs for the listening public. Best of all: you can make your own playlists online, sign in at the bar, and BOOM...it's like having your own Ipod at the bar. I used to have fun here, I also used to be young... Popped in Saturday night after years of hiatus. What amazes me is how little all has changed, same hoochie mamas being aggressively pursued by the same creepy guys to your typical every-club-every-weekend tunes. Even the DJ had the same trouble transitioning one song to the next, I shouldn't even use the word "transition" as the switch is typically quite abrupt. One second your shaking your Gold Digger hips, and suddenly your trying to get your Billie Jean shoulders to sway the next. It's all good! What really brings this place down to two stars is the offensively rude and unsympathetic staff I encountered this weekend. Here's the scoop: I was making my way off of the dance floor with a basically full drink. (If you've ever been here, you know how crowded and damn near impossible this can be.) Out of nowhere, a girl swung her elbow and ACCIDENTALLY knocked my drink straight from my hand to the floor with her elbow. MOST places would see an accident as an accident and comp you another drink, MOST. I head to the bar, tell them what happened and ask for replacment. Haughtily, she snaps that the person who knocked it down has to buy me another... well, I never! I don't even know this girl, and its a mistake! I go back to where the accident occurred and is being cleaned, don't see this girl anywhere, and certainly don't feel comfortable asking her to buy me a drink even if I did - because of an ACCIDENT. I tell the guy cleaning this up to confirm, "The bartender said the girl who knocked this over has to buy me a drink, and I don't know her and don't even see her!" To which he bellows, "Not my problem, talk to the bartender." WOW! I felt officially too old for this scene, it was 1 a.m., I wasn't "trashed" but was being treated as their usual underage drinker who can't maintain their sh*t. There are some times in your life you are happy to never go back to, I discovered the Phoenix Landing days (nights) are over. Damn me for wanting to feel a little young and silly again! read more

The Phoenix Landing is a magical place where no matter how disinclined to dancing you might be generally, you will find yourself gyrating wildly by the end of the night, swept up by the incredibly energy of a very diverse crowd. I love that there'll be old, young, black, white, employed, homeless, and everything in between getting their very unique groove on here. It would be ridiculous to feel self-conscious when there is a woman in a top hat and mom jeans doing her best old lady pee-pee dance right next to you like she's Ma-fucking-donna herself. This is a great place to go for the whole night. Go early for a leisurely dinner, and stay as they push back the tables and get ready to dance. Dinner time find the place very subdued and easygoing, with reliable food and service. This is not the place to go for picking someone up (thank god), as the crowd just seems to be into partying for its own sake. It was crap, yet I ended up going in here a lot, b/c there is nothing else available. On Friday and Saturday night they have the 80's night, and when they play the same damn song. The crowd is pretty ugly, girls are the nerdy spillover from MIT/Harvard, and the dudes of course can't dance to save their lifes, but just stay in the side and watch. The same DJ (the asian) dude is good, but very apathetic, like he is playing something that he hates. I am sure he is loosing his hair b/c he is tired hearing the same music, over and over and over, or he heavily sedates himself before starts dj ing. They have a good selection of beers, and $5 cover, which sucks. I am so glad I don't live in Cambridge anymore.
