Just about six months ago when I crossed the finish line at the San Francisco marathon, my mini me said she wanted to run 5K after being inspired by my trainings and result. So we trained together for the past six months. She couldn't even run a half mile in the beginning. For someone like her to cross the finish line at 37 mins strong, I must say that was pretty impressive! Our weekly training paid off. So glad I was able to experience her joy with her. It helped her with self confidence. Bib pick up: available on Friday from noon or on the race from 6:30am only for 5K and kids run. Expo is fun, lots of different vendors to visit. Picking up bibs for both events was easy, well organized. Parking on the race day: available for free at 700 west rio salado. Seemed like a plenty of then, it was easy, perhaps It was easy due to Saturday event being smaller. I will find out tomorrow how bad it might be. Race is well organized, and fun, fun, fun. One aid station about mid way. One live band and two DJs. Family friendly events, my mini me was at the corral 3 and had no problems with crowds. My boy and I were at corral 1, got to talk with fellow runners before the race. One runner from LA, who he said hoping to get #1 on full tomorrow shared his story how he inspired and trained his family members. After race event: adult gets one free beer. Be sure to carry your ID with you while running. Since I had two minors, I was hoping I can use their beer tickets to get me more but they marked on my bib and was allowed only one. Concert was fun too. Not as crowded as Sunday, easy to hangout and enjoy. All in all, it was such a family bonding event for me. We trained together and run together. 6 mins or 16 mins per mile, a mile is a mile. That's what I kept saying to her. We all achieved our own goal time, we became stronger together. Very hilly 15k race…read more I think we had just about 600 runners at this race. Pretty small race. Bib pick up: available on Friday and Saturday in Scottsdale, and the race day pick up is available. Race day pick up location was at the finish line area and need to walk to the bus stop. Race day: bus takes to the start line. Plenty of toilets available at the start like. Only 600 runners, line never gets too long. Since some people showed up late, last bus ended up leaving later, ended up pushing the start time by 20 minutes. That 20 minuets made difference in temperature, I was really hot. Race: start from the McDowell Mountain Park, up hills and down hills then up again, little bit of down and more ups and ups. Be sure to train for up hills during training. Since it was a local race for me, we practiced the race route several times and it helped me prepare well. Post race: cash award is available for the first place runner. I think it was $200. They also have age group award and it was $50 gift card at a local running shoes store. I spend so much money for running shoes for me and my family, this gift certificate is definitely helpful for my household budget. One of the sponsors is Huss brewing. They provide lots of craft beer. Everyone gets one can but they also give out to groups of runners. Fast runners, biggest running team, random picks. Amount of beer is based on one person's weight in your team. It's good to have heavy weight person for more beer. I took a case home and am still enjoying them. It is really fun race, small and friendly.

I guess I'm just hardcore.) Renowned among local runners as one of the premier races in Phoenix, the New Times 10K drew quite the crowd as a rush of humanity (10,000 runners) traipsed the Tempe Town Lake bridge on a crisp 68 degree morning to invade the major streets of Tempe in a race to the finish. Local bands along the way provide for some chill, cool entertainment. The all-Asian rocker boy band was pretty damn good. Some stuff I learned that morning about the New Times 10K. * It's the 13th largest 10K race in the U.S. * It's the oldest running race in Arizona. * The race used to be in Central Phoenix, until two years ago. * The uphill incline on Curry Road seriously sucks ass. * Hayden Square at 4th St. hosts a lively pre-race and post-race festival with vendors and bands. * Beer tastes so much better (and you feel less desperate) in the morning if you've just run 6.2 miles. * Beer tastes even better when it's free. * Hometown Buffet (or any buffet for that matter) also tastes better when you've just run 6.2 miles. * Hometown Buffet doesn't taste better when it's free. * When you're running with 10,000 other runners and want to be found by your friends, wear something bright or noticeable. It was fun being surprised at each obstacle and I can't believe I did it! The electro shock obstacle was like getting tased. And somehow the Photog captured the exact moment I went down which was hilarious. Also, very grateful for the photogs and the free pix! Do be timid. Smile for the cameras and feel exhilaration for completing such a fun packed challenge. Tips - bring extra padding, mud is not soft (full of rocks)

A challenging running-obstacle-bonding ritual…read more Still a fan of the TM after doing the March 2015 race. MUCH easier than 2013, when it was done in February, when it was 50-degrees and windy, and people were stacked up in the medical tents with hypothermia symptoms. Coolest thing about the race is the camaraderie. Our department did it together with some significant others, friends, and relatives. We make sure everyone finishes, that we raise money for a good cause, and we get some remarkable memories for the on-course pain. Also get to meet some cool people on the course. The course has been toned down on the suffering side, making it more doable-- only one shock obstacle at the end; more obstacles requiring the upper body strength to drag and pull oneself, and pretty easy running. Oh, and lots of mud and dust. I'm still getting it out of my nose, lungs, and ears. Yup. My EARS. Worth putting on your life's bucket list and knocking off with friends...

They also offer a shorter 5K run, but sometimes those runs seem a bit too quick for me now. I think the long run switched to a 10K due to the "hilliness" of the course. I enjoyed the run because the Fountain Hills area has pretty views and neighborhoods to see. Since I'm used to running on flatter terrain, I did get a little winded at times, but it wasn't anything un-doable. I just realized that I need to pace myself better so I can finish stronger, instead of losing steam at the end. The course was clearly laid out. No confusion. The cops did a great job directing traffic. Although there were no corrals separating runners with different paces, it never got too crowded at any point. The medals were very colorful, and the ribbon attached to the medal actually had the date, which was December 15, 2013 printed on it. There was a fun post-run box at the end that had a snack and a fruit/veggie drink of some sort samples. They even gave one of the biggest water bottles I ever seen on your way out. The shirt given with the race packet was a nice cotton poly blend that was very comfortable to run in. Overall, I enjoyed this run. It was extremely cold and windy at the start of the run so it was hard waiting for the run to start, but once it got started, I quickly warmed up after the first mile or two. I'm really not sure what they could do better at this point. I will most likely do the run again.

Packet pick up line was long and slow. Having said that, the event itself was wonderful. The course was well marked. Plenty of water and sports drink stations. We loved the tunes as we run along the course. Parking was free. Plenty of porta potties. The merchandise were adorbs. The post run entertainment was fun! We will run this event again. Hopefully they'll do it an hour early. Fingers crossed.

There seems to be a good amount of parking, but since I haven't driven and parked here, I can't comment much on that aspect. However, the bathrooms are great. There is one entry door with a water fountain and water fill up station inside, and a women's and men's restroom on the left and right, respectively. The bathrooms are in good condition though the women's didn't have soap this time - not a problem as I popped into the men's and washed up there. There are a few trails to choose from here and I hike to this trailhead from the Lost Dog trailhead, so it's a bit of a trek. I did the trail that goes to Sunrise Peak and finishes out on Andrew Kinsey. Didn't see too many folks which was good. Nice to have a well-maintained place to stop and take a quick break. Wow! There are so many trail options from this location. But whether you want a short hike or a…read morelong hike, you'll have beautiful views overlooking Fountain Hills. My parents took my husband and I here for a hike, and we were so impressed. After you've already done the major touristy hikes in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, I highly recommend coming out to Fountain Hills. The parking lot looked like it had space for about 30 cars, and there were bathrooms and a shade structure with benches for pre- and après hike. You also get to drive by an impressive Marriott hotel and many beautiful new Toll Brothers homes. Depending on the environmentalist views of your carmates, you might have to listen to a 10-minute lecture about how awful it is that folks are cutting into the mountain to make these homes. But... it's precisely the infrastructure for those homes that make it possible to create beautiful and useful trailheads like these. We loved that this trailhead was not very crowded.

Peralta Trails is by far one of my favorites in the Phoenix Metro Area. The drive is beautiful and…read moremost of it dirt. You don't need a four-wheel-drive however. Even if you're not a hiker, just go for the drive alone. I'd suggest getting out of your car at the provide lot and taking pictures at the beginning of the trail as it's something in itself to experience.

Fantastic trail away from everything. Pretty easy steady climb to the Needle on the other side…read more 5miles out and back. Today after few days of rain saw running water and everything was so green. The sound of water made the experience even more beautiful.
