I currently go to their studio once a week for lessons. Listening for the right pitch and music theory has always been harder for me, but Evie and her husband Matt are some of the best teachers in the area. They actually not only teach high-level piano and violin, but Evie specializes in double bass and Matt in trumpet. Both at the professional orchestra symphony level. Evie's super knowledgeable, patient but firm, and you can tell she has a lot of experience and a passion for the art. I feel what makes her special is she has a great pace when demonstrating things, and it's in a very concise and deliberate manner. Matt has a wealth of experience and has taught me a lot about music theory. He's very intuitive and smart. I think he's extremely attuned and aware of what students need and when they aren't understanding something. And like Evie, he's able to break things down, but in a detailed fashion. I practice an hour or two every day and decided to find a teacher to help me push past a fairly advanced level, learning Beethoven sonatas, Chopin etudes, and Rachmaninoff preludes. So I searched for an MTAC teacher, expecting to have a profesional experience. Shannon changed the time slot of my lesson each of the first three scheduled sessions. Not a big deal at first and I was flexible, but it didn't feel like she respected my time and energy from the start. At the first lesson, she admitted she had never taught ragtime and seemed to dismiss it as not classical repertoire. She told me to study Hanon, which I already practice daily, and she'd never seen the Pischna technical exercise book I brought which is more difficult than Hanon. And during the first lesson her mom came into the piano room (her living room, which has really harsh acoustics) and just stood there for a bit watching me. I waved and said hi, hoping Shannon would address the interruption, but she pretended like nothing happened. She wrote nothing in the notebook I brought for feedback and homework, and it really felt like I didn't have a lesson at all. I'd paid cash for 3 lessons in advance, so I decided to just try my best to learn something, but the third lesson was canceled due to another supposed schedule conflict. I felt like my time and money were wasted overall.
