0 stars. The professionalism of this animal hospital is atrocious. I scheduled online for my dog to have his annual shots on Monday and received a confirmation email for the visit. Then the day before I received a FACEBOOK MESSAGE from Dr. Johnson's son saying "Hey dude....." I have attached a screenshot of the conversation below. I ended up canceling the appointment because I felt uncomfortable with how everything was handled in the first place. I also blocked him on Facebook. Later I still received a confirmation for the appointment I canceled and replied to the email stating so. The son replied using THE PIKE ANIMAL HOSPITAL EMAIL. I have also attached the response. How am I suppose to feel comfortable with bringing me dog here with this unprofessional communication. read more

We've used Dr Johnson since coming to Troy 7 years ago and couldn't be happier with the entire staff. They've taken care of our elderly dogs... the new puppy and our cats...I can count on Doc and the staff to care for my fur babies like their own... even coming in to meet us on a weekend when emergencies arose. From shots to helping two of them over the Rainbow Bridge... Doc and staff are all family now. my review of this vet is truly the ONLY review that you should read. Our little dog was going into shock, after stopping at a rest stop, we were travelling through troy alabama, when his throat started to close. Our dog was dying quickly and we rushed him into Pike county animal hospital....where we were rushed into an exam room. Doc Johnston and his son Zack acted quickly and saved my dogs life. Doc is quite an amazing vet. Turned out that it was a snake bite and doc even came in at 3 am the next morning to check on him. They administered anti venom and only charged his cost. I am a federally licensed wildlife rehabber and I know many top notch vets, Doc Johnston is one of them. Please consider changing negative reviews, as this is the only vet in the area, and people should feel comfortable with his many years of experience. He helps exotics too....hes even helped an african lion. I trusted this vet with my dogs life, and because of him, my dog is STILL alive.... read more

Dr Larry Johnston is the real deal. 27 years ago he saved my rescue puppy then allowing 2 broke college students to pay off the $1000 treatment over the course of 2 years. That dog was Princess and she lived to be 16 years old. Without Dr. Johnston she would never have gotten to meet and play with my 2 little girls that came along 10 years later. She is the dog by which I judge all other dogs. 2 other will known vets in town said to put her down but Dr.Johnston gave us multiple options, treating us kindly, and I have no doubt he continues to care just as much today. Without this vet, who loves and expertly cares for our fur babies, we wouldn't have had the 16 years of unconditional love and companionship with the best dog ever!! Over the past two decades, I have had many pets and have brought them numerous times to Pike Animal Hospital for treatment, routine vet care, and boarding. Until now, I have been pretty happy with the care my animals have received from Dr. Johnston and his staff. In fact, the whole reason I continued to bring my animals there is because of the trust I had that he would continue to treat them with care and respect. I currently have a 9 year old Golden Retriever with Addison's Disease. His name is Max. He was diagnosed at the age of 4 by our vet in Washington State where we were stationed for the Army. Addison's is an autoimmune disease which affects the production of hormones in the adrenal gland; one hormone helps your body react to stress, and the other helps the kidneys work properly. If treated with steroids, dogs can have a normal quality of life; however if not treated, it will eventually kill them. The Army recently gave us orders to move overseas and so during the transition we have come back to Troy to stay with family. Over the holidays, we left Max to be boarded at Pike Animal Hospital and gave instructions (as we have in the past) on how to administer his medication. This time, however, I explained that we had run out of one of them and asked if they could please order it and give it to him while he was there; we would pay whatever the cost was (it can be rather expensive) and we told them the dosage. We were given the OK by the receptionist and left. We then traveled to visit family for the holidays for 2 weeks. Upon our return, we called the vet to check on Max and asked if everything went smoothly with his medication. We were told he was not given the second medication, because it was too expensive and the vet said "he looked fine and didn't need it". I'm sure you can probably imagine my distress at knowing my dog was now 2 weeks overdue on a medication necessary for his survival and shocked that I was not contacted when Dr. Johnston decided not to order it. My husband and I went immediately to the vet and asked to be seen. We were called into the office, where I was then told by Dr. Johnston that he had been up since 3 am and "didn't have time for this". He also said that my dog "was fine" and that if I wanted help or any other information about his condition that I needed to take him somewhere else. He said "we aren't a pharmacy" and he wasn't just going to give him a medication because we told him to. When I asked why he didn't bother to call and let us know so that we could order it ourselves and have it sent there, he again said he "didn't have time for this". He was extremely defensive, even when I told him how much I appreciated the care my other pets had been given over the years and that I just wanted to know Max was ok. I asked how he knew he was "fine" and whether or not he did a thorough exam to check this and he said no. He then asked a vet tech "Is Max eating?" He responded yes. "Is Max drinking?" Again the response was yes. I replied that he was doing both of those things right before his initial diagnosis and he almost died. When I started to cry and plead with him that I just wanted assurance that he was ok before our overseas move he again replied that he didn't have time for me; he also implied that my dog's condition was not as important as other dogs he has treated for cancer etc over the years and that he was done with me and I needed to leave. After I walked out of the office he spoke with my husband and admitted he had never treated a dog with Addison's before. Therefore, he has NO IDEA that my dog is "fine" without actually performing the proper examination. My dog is now 2 weeks overdue for a medication he is supposed to have every 30 days; his body is probably in distress but I don't know because he refused to check him out properly. REFUSED. I am APPALLED that Dr. Johnston ignored our request to give Max the necessary medication. It would have taken a simple phone call to let me know he wasn't comfortable giving this type of medicine without proper vet records (even though he's seen Max several times). He didn't bother to let us know it wasn't given; even when we called, we were only told about it because we asked. And his reason was that it was too expensive!!! Why would that matter if I agreed up front to pay the cost?? This man completely broke my trust today. Not only did he show me that he did not care about my dog's health and well being, but was extremely defensive, rude and downright nasty to me when I wanted to know why. Even when I begged him to check my dog out to ease my mind before our upcoming move (which can be extremely stressful on dogs--a situation that could make him very sick!) he refused and told me to leave. The people of Troy need to know that their pet's well being is at the mercy of this man's bad temper, impatience and indifference. read more

Three years ago I took my cat in because she had become very lethargic. I was informed that she had feline leukemia, that the medical costs would be expensive, and that putting her down would be the more humane option if I could not afford treatment. I could not afford this, and I also couldn't afford the put down fee that they wanted to charge. I said I would take the animal up to my regular vet in Ozark because I knew the cost would be $100 cheaper. I was told that they would waive the cost for me if cost was that much of a concern. When I went to collect my cat's carrier, the woman at the front desk did not waive the fee and I was charged for the full cost. I would have normally argued, but I was on the verge of tears that my cat had been suffering and I couldn't afford to save her. read more

I have been Amazed by Dr. Johnston. I've never had a vet like Dr. Johnston. He is the most caring Vet that I know and you can see that whenever you talk to him. He loves the animals and treats them as his own. The staff is the best staff I have ever encountered every time I've ever needed something they answer my call and are the most polite and kind. They will adjust to your wants whenever you ASK. My last pet to bring them was my female cat who was urinating blood. From the first minute on, Dr. Johnston was completely honest and upfront about her diagnosis. He tried the least invasive treatment first Antibiotics. Which we did for about a month. Me and my Fiancé thought they worked at different points and eventually we had to have surgery. In 30 YEARS of being a vet he has never done surgery on a female cat with kidney stones. Before her surgery he did not know what she had and told us that it could be a tumor or kidney stone we just didn't know but he narrowed it down to the 2. Dr. Johnston was truly over the top in his care of our baby who's surgery was a great Success!!! Removal of 2 Kidney stones. He treats your baby as his own by not doing extra procedures like sending off blood for testing because he knows treatment is expensive. If needed he will do whatever is necessary because he treats them as his own!! read more

When your dear friend is traveling through on her way back home and is faced with a critical event requiring emergency attention for her loving pet and you see her pleas on FB for prayers because her pup is near death...YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE VET AND STAFF that answered our collective prayers. That would be Pike Animal Hospital. As a loving pet owner myself, I couldn't imagine the anguish my dear friend Robin was in at the thought of finishing her trip home without her baby. Thank you for treating her pup like his life mattered, rather than treating the pup like just another patient, the outcome of which was inconsequential to you or your staff. INSTEAD, you made the outcome as important for your practice as it was for the owners and that SPEAKS VOLUMES.
