The owner Alyssa and the other instructor I've seen are both super encouraging and refused to let me give up/watch from the side lines and gave tips on how to adapt moves to my skill level. I especially appreciated it in a particular class where I didn't think I was physically capable of a particular move and was able to get it with some assistance. I'll definitely be back and I also love that the classes in a package don't expire, which is great since its hard for me to find classes that fit around my work schedule and other classes. The class sizes are great (8 max for most classes) and the students have all been supportive and friendly.

That said, my first impression wasn't enough for me to come back. Dolphin dance's website needs an update, or at least it did when I went. I arrived late because the address led me to a different part of Port Orchard and I had to call the studio last minute to find the location. Then class started 10 minutes late, and being brand new to the area at that time, I was told that this is how time/scheduling works out here... Actually, I've lived here for a year now and have yet to come across that anywhere else. Upon entering the studio, the instructor/owner asked where I was from, laughed, and made a statement with a heavy accent that was supposed to be from my home state. I was taken aback. It's ok to tease someone you know better, but to make a crack at someone who's brand new in the area, got lost on the way there, and is homesick like crazy.. not ok. I spent the class being repeatedly warned that, since I had a history with pole dancing at other studios, that I'm to keep my feet on the ground at all times until I progress further along in this studio's classes/levels. How boring. If I wanted to keep my feet on the ground while dancing to slow music that's not energizing for fun, I would have joined ballet instead. Then we spent 15 minutes being instructed how to twirk, one butt cheek, the other butt cheek, both butt cheeks. Seriously now? We also spent a good 10 minutes learning handstands. Alright, except for those who can do handstands in their sleep, there really should be an alternate option/version to work on during that time. That was really boring, and I wasn't getting any tips or corrections, so it felt like wasted class time, much like the twerking. Time was saved at the end for a pow-wow style discussion about life lessons and personal growth. This was sweet, but I'd rather be pole dancing. The poles themselves are a bit older: static rather than spinning, and they felt thicker than the poles I've typically used, but that's a personal preference.

I am not sure if it is because we had a small private party that it was not the studio as pictured. We were at Marisa's place which she converted an area to be a private studio with 4 poles. I called The Toy Box and the spoke with the owner. She invited me to the studio the following week to try out a class & ask all the questions I needed. When I arrived I was greeted by the owner who instructs all the classes. The other women in the class greeted me too, and they all were encouraging and welcoming. The prices for classes were affordable. I signed up for 4 classes a month (once a week). That was 2 years ago and I still look forward to going to my weekly class at the Toy Box. You can sign up for multiple classes a week. The studio does not have windows and is private. Students are on their own pole for the whole hour. Classes are limted to 7 students Due to small classes the instructor is able to provide one on one instruction. Classes focus on teaching the sport of pole dance with a focus on acrobatics on a verticle pole. Individual instruction is given based on a students level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The instructor and other students are encouraging. The other women in the classes are fun supportive and at times silly. I had hardly no upper body strength and absolutely no formal dance or gynamstic ability when I walked into the studio my first day. The instructor started me with the basics, gave me tips on what I was doing in error and making moves more difficult for myself, and encouraged me. Through pole fitness I gained muscle tone, strenght, flexibility, confidence (it feels incredible when you are able to master a challenging move and do combos). I also gained friends and a sense of empowerment. The studio has offered special event workshops that are in addition to classes for students who are interested. These workshops are at the Toy Box and hosted by Pole Fitness Champions. The most recent being Veronica Solimano and Natasha Wang (have you youtubed these women, wow!). The classes here are great for anyone who wants to learn pole fitness, improve skills they may already have and be in a supportive fun enviornment.

So when I started at Positive Spin three years ago, I was initially intimidated and expected a similar level of intensity. But the vibe here is very different. All the instructors encourage individuality and choosing your own adventure. They will cancel classes and not give you refunds, and they will not follow the industry standard of allowing you to select the level that matches your body by forcing you to purchase overpriced classes to prove to them you have "experience." These classes are not cheap, and they again won't refund.Better to take classes from other studios in the area that are affordable, will allow you to choose your own level without going through payment hoops and will actually refund you for classes THEY cancel last minute.

The rooms were warm enough and one day the instructor had the class outside on the deck because the weather was hot and perfect for a flow. Took the fusion class a couple times and a flow and they were equally exceptional. The campus here is so beautiful and they have so many different things they offer along with the traditional classes. This place is definitely on my list to come back to when visiting Olympia.
