Words cannot express how grateful I am for becoming apart of this church family. As a member of 14 years, I can say without hesitation that this church has catapulted my walk with Christ to new heights. From the moment you walk into the sanctuary, you can feel the presence of the Lord. The church does a great job at incorporating traditional, southern baptist customs with a modern worship experience. It is a larger church, though participating in ministries and familiarizing myself with people on my pew has given it a smaller, family church feel. The pastor doesn't just preach but he takes pride in teaching the congregation which I believe is a nice touch for anyone just starting their faith journey. I have thought long and hard about whether I should leave a review, but after talking it over and praying about it with some past congregation attendees, and realizing that some had similar concerns, I thought you all had the right to know. First, let me start by saying; we really thought we had found "our church home" we attended this church for the past few months and decided to hold off on attending the new members classes, which I am thankful we did. In the beginning, we really enjoyed the worship service and the sermons by Pastor Mackey, and we looked forward to Sunday service. I remember vividly during one of his Sunday sermons, he clearly said that his church was neither a Democratic or Republican party, rather it was a house God and that all ethnicities are welcomed, we were ecstatic to hear this, who wouldn't right? Unfortunately, as time went on, we noticed that the sermons started integrating political jabbing, which is very displeasing. Now, with this being said, it shouldn't matter what party you serve (that's irrelevant) we are here to worship in song, hear the wonderful word of God, feel the Holy Spirit around us to help ease the turmoil and heaviness that we deal with on a daily basis, to help us get through another work week, not to listen to more negativity at church! It should never be a political jab because in doing so, you are continuing the cycle of hate and division in a world that's clearly in chaos! I believe we need to uplift our leaders (whether you like them or not) in prayers asking God to grant them the wisdom and discernment in their roles of leadership. May God guide them to lead this nation with integrity, compassion, help them to navigate through difficult decisions that impact our nation because that's what Jesus would want us to do! Secondly, the final straw for us was during Pastor Mackey's sermon 9/14/25 when he spoke ill of Charlie Kirk, making him sound like a racist (which he is far from it) I recommend that you listen to Alveda King, Martin Luther King Jr, Niece who spoke eloquently and Christian like. Also, maybe research more into Charlie Kirk's debates (you may not agree with it all, but that's ok) Charlie lead many people to seek Jesus Christ first and foremost, and you have the audacity to ignore this wonderful thing he did? Even now, people are being saved, going to church, opening the Bible for the first time, and you have the audacity to speak ill of him? Unbelievable!! However, to speak ill of him shortly after his assassination was not very becoming as a Christian, let alone the leader and Pastor of the church. This was extremely distasteful, disappointing and disheartening to say the least. Not to mention the two men behind you smirking with joy as you unleashed ill spoken words of the recently deceased, shame on you and them! (maybe go back and view the tape) and if you feel this is acceptable behavior within a church, well, this is a church we want no part of and we will continue to pray for you! As you know, we have decided to seek worship elsewhere as God knows exactly where he needs us to lead us, along with our friends who are also prior attendees. Be careful This "Church organization, supposedly helps, but are racist. First of all, if you are not afroamerican, don't gonna get help. Then, they asking for sensitive documents, birth certificate, SS card, more papers. Then, they making you back and forth, for several weeks. After several weeks, and 3 or 4 appointments, they going to give next appointment after 2 months... have no sense... and never helps. They say, they help with bills. We went to Easter Sunday Services and I was enjoying the worship and everything that went on! I had about made up my mind to go back. What changed my mind? The Alter call! So many folks answered God's call to Salvation and it was wonderful! Then things took a turn . I have followed Jesus as my Lord and Savior since the early eighties.A call to salvation and receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior is a totally awesome life changing gift from God and should have nothing to do with what church you end up being called to attend. It's called being born again and becoming a new person in Christ the old is gone the new had come! Having your sins forgiven and washed away by the blood of the Lamb(Jesus). This did not appear to be celebrated during this particular alter call. What did occur really disturbed me! And for the person going forward to receive Jesus and then have what happened happen could cause a setback and confusion. Instead of the Pastor celebrating their new Birth and receiving Jesus is their savior. He was celebrating all the new people committing to come to Pilgrim's rest Baptist Church as new members. It never should've been about whether or not they wished to join the church. That should've been a totally separate decision. So I was put off to say the least, and I can only pray for those people that came forward and hope that they had an encounter with Jesus that stayed with them and caused them to come closer with their Lord and Savior. Honestly, I don't know how it'll turn out for them, But for me sadly I won't go back. If you're a follower of Jesus Christ, you should understand what I'm saying no Pastor should confuse being born again with a commitment to join a church. These are two separate incidents and should never be combined as one. I'm not sure how they hand out their new member certificates but I was told that it would be handed to me on one Sunday or another. NOT!! to this day. This church has a HUGE congregation and it's easy to get swallowed in all the under currents of personalities. I attended here years ago, with my children, but left when I heard that the Pastor didn't support 12 Step Programs. My calls to his office, to confirm this, went unanswered. They have a powerful choir, who takes front stage long and hard. Afterwards, the Pastor's sermon rounds out the theatrics. Since he swayed from the bible quite a bit, and ventured his opinion, the message of Jesus Christ became blurred. Today was my first time stepping back on the church grounds, albeit for the fresh vegetables and fruits they give away every fourth Saturday of the month. The line was long and the heat fierce, but the church members who volunteered to serve on this event were on the case: promptly offering cold water cups, water bottles and offering indoor shade to the elderly, sick or those who suffered heat exhaustion. Unfortunately, I was one of those who suffered heat exhaustion while my daughter pushed me in my manual wheelchair. Once inside the church, we were trusted (on the Honor System) to respect our outside places in line. I chatted with others, who came in, of their illnesses and offered to assist in anyway that we could. After about 1 hour, I resumed my place in line. The volunteers did a great job of organizing the food lines as well as assembling tables with each item. this created a great flow for traffic. Younger church members handed out bags and/or assisted with transporting your items, via a donated shopping buggy, to your car. I received: kale, broccoli, individual packaged chef salad, asparagus, corn on the cob, onions, apples, loaf of bread, hamburger buns, huge bag of green and purple lettuce, 2 containers of green tea, 4 bottles of water, 4 bags of Doritos, a cantaloupe and 3 small packages of Tennessee pride breakfast sausage. i was impressed that everything was fresh, and they had plenty of it to go around. Starting time was 10:30 am. we arrived at 10:15 am. We left around 12: 45. not bad at all. read more

This review is purely based on my attending a funeral for a friend's son there. Plenty of parking, clean grounds, it was very well maintained. There was ample seating inside. It was quite large actually. The pews were comfortable. The ushers were organized and offered Kleenex. Very sad occasion, and I am sorry for my friend's terrible loss. read more

It's a nice church but sadly it's an all black church and not diverse. Everything is for or about black people. There are even pictures of a black Jesus in their hallway. Makes me feel out of place especially when people preach and talk about black people problems or life. I wish things were more diverse at this church cus I liked it. read more

I so love Pilgrim Rest! It's been a little less than a year now since I've been attending regularly. What wonderful spiritual manna from heaven Christ imparts through his servant Pastor Mackey. And oh, First Lady Mackey - what a wonderful preacher she is too! I cannot say enough about the choir. I only wish worship service was longer. After searching and searching for a church where I feel spiritually fed the word of God, have the honor of worshiping Christ in spirit and in truth, a "no-judgment zone," and is not a prosperity-gospel endowed approach or guilt-ridden pressure for giving, I must say that I love PRBC. Easter 2011, I went to church that I am a member at and was bullied and rudely kicked out and told by these two women at the front that there was no room for me and they made a big embarrassing scene in front of many people in the back of the congregation by standing over me in a intimidating manner to get me out of the church. As I left I seen them kindly let this other prospect openly go into the church with open arms. I guess I was overdressed? lol I will and have no intent to ever go back to this church ever again and when I find the time will asked to be taken off as their member. I wouldn't be surprised if they already took me off as a member being that I can honestly say I had not ever really been kindly welcomed in the first place. This church is fake.
