I've spent many visits to Hilliards picking up waaaay too much candy for big holidays as well as the smaller ones (St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July, Halloween) because "I need to bring candy to work!" The owner was also very knowledgeable about the history of south county as a long term resident of the area whose family had lived there since the 1600's. And it was a very big store with many different rooms. It seems that somehow they reduced the size of the building. In the past, they had a lot more in the way of unique gifts and country type items, antiques as well as cookies and candies. They still have some of those things, but it seems like it really it has been toned down quite a bit. I also remember in the past there was an old firehouse outside nearby, and I think they renovated it. And turned it into an empty building, which resembles the same building as the country store. My friend ended up buying a bar of lavender soap and I bought a couple of bags of netties kettle corn. The staff was friendly and helpful. We found the prices to be a little bit on the steep side.

I gave the address knowing it was less than four miles away from the recipient. I asked for suggestions as I wanted more of a plant than fresh flowers. The woman who answered the phone suggested a dish garden. I asked her how much and she quoted me a price. Shame on me for not asking for the "total" price as I was charged 35% more than the price given over the phone by the owner's sister. When I called back to ask about the charge on my card I spoke to the same woman and she stated that there were charges for delivery, tax and credit card processing fees. I'm not completely surprised now that it has been explained to me but it would have been better to be told the total price when I asked upon initial order. When I explained that I was surprised with the amount I was charged on my card today, she stated that "everyone" knows that there is a delivery charge and credit card processing fees with an attitude. It's not always what is said but how you say it.

They are famous for their Gibralters and their Blackjacks - I of course, took home both. The Gibralters come in lemon and peppermint flavor - they are big pieces of candy that are made to be broken and shared. I also took home two of the blue raspberry flavored fruit jellies which didn't make it very far - I'm a sucker for anything blue raspberry flavored. The inside of Ye Olde Pepper Companie is very small, the line took up the entire store and people actually had to wait outside until people left before they could come in. The line moved quickly though and they were very organized when helping customers. There are no tables to sit at, just tables, cases and shelves of candy! They offered chocolates, fudge, Saltwater Taffy, caramel corn and even brittles. Is it the best candy in the world? No, but I love knowing that I got to visit and purchase candy from the oldest one in America. Staff were very friendly and they gave me a See's Candy vibe minus the cute little outfits.
