I was in Pinehurst with 11 others for a guy's golf weekend on 10/7/23…read more Pinehurst #4 was one of the courses on our agenda. We also played #2 and The Cradle and #4 was my favorite of all. The #4 course was designed by Donald Ross in 1919. It's gone through several redesigns and restorations over the years and the current one is by Gil Hanse in 2018. It was named the best new course of 2018 and hosted the 2019 US Amateur tournament won by Andy Ogletree versus John Augustein. I can compare #2 and #4 and say that #4 is a much more visually appealing course with a large lake where several holes wrap around it and take advantage of the beautiful vistas and the natural terrain. Especially hole #13 which is a 504 yard Par 5. It is the classic risk/reward hole that gives you the opportunity to go over water making a shorter approach to the green. I also liked #14 which was a 179 yard Par 3 over the water which I birdied. There was a family sitting on the nearby hill that gave me an ovation when I landed the green and another ovation when I sank the birdie putt. Holes #15 and #16 are manageable Par 4's at 331 and 274 yards from the white tees. There were several guys in our group that were close to driving the green but on this particular day, the wind was up and swirling and right in our face. The greens were much more accessible than on #2. No more of the crowned undulating green design that are the size of a postage stamp that require precise placement to hold for a chance to putt. You also have the option of riding a cart though it is 'cart path only' on every hole. I also really liked The Nest which is the bar/restaurant at the the turn on #9. A little oasis in the sand which is Pinehurst. You have all your fav cocktails and some great food options as well as facilities for that necessary bio break. I've played 2 of the 10 Pinehurst courses and can say it's a premium experience that every serious golfer needs to try. Who knows, maybe I'll get a chance to chalk some more off the list.

The price is a bit higher than other courses in the area, so I think the value compared to some of the other courses in the area is a bit lower. The tee times were also pretty stacked up, we had a group behind us before we were off the first hole and I'm usually a pretty fast golfer. I reviewed other companies in their area and "Sand Hills" was hands down the least expensive with the "most bang for your buck". They had us stay at the Residence Inn , with a ton of restaurants and bars nearby, several were walking distance as well. The hotel was perfect and fitted our needs perfectly. The first course was Legacy and it was gorgeous and a pleasure to play for our first round. We then had Seven Lakes and Anderson Creek to round out or three day get away. Anderson Creek is a good choice for those who plan to head back north on their last day. Its about 1 hr north of Pinehurst area. We paid and began play before 8pm. At 8:45 the music went completely off. At 8:50 half the lights went off. At 9:00pm all the lights went off. There was our foursome and another foursome left out in the pitch black dark on holes 16 and 14. Very lucky we did not trip getting off the course in the dark! We will never go back there and will not recommend this to anyone. Ownership should take a hard look at what's going on there. A Friday night and only 2 foresomes.....obvious what is wrong!
