This year is was baked good for my Christmas party, one year it was homemade colored and flavored lip balms for my granddaughters, one year it was a garden stake gift for my best friend. This year my best friend found jewelry for herself. And most years I find something I want for myself too, but at Christmas time I try to be frugal so I rarely get myself anything. Parking can be difficult, but go early and you'll have better luck finding a spot.

Some folks I had already bought gifts for are gonna get tons cause I just could not pass up the cuteness and bought more. First, it's FREE to get in and it's huge with a variety of unique things to look at, alot of which is very affordable. I got handmade soaps for all the ladies and cute little bottlecap keychains for my newly driving nieces and a day of the dead necklace for my best girlfriend who misses Austin so much. I also got sugar scrub and a mermaid necklace for me! Some really creative stuff here....jewelry made from buttons and recycled tin cans, sweet little vintage material purses, super soft clothes made from organic material, and of course all the whimsical screen printed baby tees. Wish I had more babies to buy for! They also have a cafeteria that looked to be serving mostly tacos but I didn't partake. Parking and driving in the area can be a bear as it is insanely packed. It's so worth it though! I vowed I would try to buy all locally made gifts for everyone this year and I did. They may not be an XBOX 360, but they are unique and bought with every person's personality in mind. If you aren't familiar with the VFW, it's a fraternal organization for veterans who have served in a combat theater. It was originally founded for vets to be able to get away from the general public and connect with other vets. They have since begun welcoming the general public when accompanied by a VFW member. I am a proud lifetime member, but my home post was in Germany. So, I came here to check it out and see about transferring my membership. I think everyone has a general idea of what they THINK the VFW would be like...and chances are, they would be completely correct! There is a canteen inside that has a full bar, pool table, dart, shuffle board, and various other activities. The hall also has meeting rooms, offices, kitchen...etc. The decor is far from modern. The grounds of post 8787 has a small race track, some green space, and a large deck. The jukebox is playing anything from oldies to blues and country. At this post...I am the youngster! The people here are friendly and engaging. The Ladies Auxiliary is the first to greet me and we have some great conversations. A few beers in I finally realize something...I realize that THIS is what I've been looking for. I've finally found my community. This place feels like home and I look forward to spending a lot of time here. Be nice to me...maybe I'll let you tag along sometime...:)

Treasure City Thrift recently moved into my neighborhood, so I finally stopped in to see what it…read morewas all about. On my first visit, I noticed they had a nice mix of clothing, shoes, glassware, and home décor, so I came back this weekend hoping to browse the clothing racks. I struck out on clothes this time around--not because they didn't have any, just because nothing in my size was quite my style, condition, or price point. That's thrifting, though. You never know what you're going to find, and sometimes the best score is in a completely different aisle. In my case, I walked out with a pair of vintage shoes in excellent condition for only $5, plus several beautiful glass pieces for next to nothing. I'd call that a successful trip! When I drove by on Sunday, they had boxes and boxes of free items out front with people happily digging through them. It was way too hot for me to join the hunt, but once the Texas weather cools off, I definitely will. This feels like one of those thrift stores that's worth stopping into regularly because the inventory is always changing, and you never know what treasure you'll find next.

A unique project designed to help the chronically homeless and disabled find affordable and…read moresustainable housing in a loving community. Located on bus route 237 in East Austin this housing center helps to empower those less fortunate by giving them more permanent housing. This 27 acre park is split into a collection of tiny homes and RV trailers in a well curated landscape. Resources like a medical clinic, workshop, community gardens, and memorial area really makes this a special place. It is a faith based organization that is open to people of all faiths. Many of the RVs have more permanent structures like a porch that have been built next to them. The tiny homes are incredible with a variety of different floor plans sponsored by local builders and donors. Bathrooms are communal. There is an outdoor movie theater right at the entrance. It feels clean and well decorated with more construction constantly underway. By the far the best part is getting to hear from and connect with current residents about how this unique solution to their problem has resonated with them. It's clear that in addition to providing material needs, the people running this place care about the residents here. This business model of using tiny homes to combat homelessness was written up by CNN. In addition to donating financially, you can also help build. I applaud the efforts underway here and am excited for how this place will continue to help people in need in the future.

I've grown up in the city, so it was great to work on the farm and see where veggies come from! The farm has all sorts of vegetables: carrots, beets, kale, peppers, cilantro, spinach, and more.
