This is the best place to get your haircut in Boston. Pini never gives a bad cut. I have thick and wavy hair and I've consistently had bad experiences at salons until coming here. His cuts are an investment price wise but I barely need to get my hair cut because he does such a great job that the cuts last. He really frames your face and gives you a cut you barely have to style. I don't even have to blow-dry my hair to have it look put together. All the celebrities who live locally come here but it's not a stuffy or snobby place in the least and Pini treats everyone with full respect and courtesy. How desperate you might ask? I was eyeing tickets and considering couch surfing with friends in NY so that I could go back to my beloved Stacy at Styles on B. Alas, that didn't seem like the best fix. So, I took a deep breath, opened my Best of Boston edition of Boston Magazine, and called the best. Yes. His name is Chuck Bass which got a chuckle in my office when I made the appointment a few weeks ago. Yes, he only works until 3pm. Yes, Boston Magazine got it right. Chuck Bass is to managing unruly hair what the more well known Chuck Bass is to managing Upper East Side socialites. He was precise and got straight down to business turning my abused locks into a beautiful mane. What he couldn't fix right now he was honest about and we sent another appointment in three months to try and get my hair to all the way there. I appreciated his honest push back and also appreciate the fact that I left the salon feeling like my old, fierce self. Was it expensive? Yes. I've been with him through 3 salons now and I'll never leave him. He cuts my hair so it looks good curly or straight (when I have the energy to yank it flat) and he always has good conversation to go with the kickin cut. The best thing about Paul is he doesn't push me into anything I want to do. It's about time to cover my gray. I know it. He knows it. But he also knows I a bit nervous about slathering my hair with chemicals and the maintenance involved in coloring. He mentions tints occasionally as an alternative but never makes me feel bad about my non-color decision. The salon itself is very pleasant. Well lit without being garish and not nearly as snooty as other Newbury street salons I have encountered (you know who you are, snoots). You get a very at home feeling here the stylists and receptionists are genuine people who try to make you feel welcome. They have a very cool table in the middle of the salon for people to occupy themselves with their laptops and magazines while they wait for their color to set. These 4-stars are for Kara who is an amazing colorist! The customer service at reception, not so much. I came in with a Gilt voucher for partial Balayage and blowout- Kara was so nice, took the time to ask me questions and actually listened to my responses.The color is wonderful, I've never had so many compliments and inquiries of where it was done. In fact, I'm 4 months out from my color and it still looks amazing. My review isn't 5-stars due only to the lack of customer service I have experienced over the phone. I felt they were a bit rude and pushy when I booked my original appt, and today, when I called back to schedule my next color with Kara, I had yet another rude experience when I inquired about pricing. I didn't know what to expect since my original visit was on a voucher, and when I hesitated because it was more than I had anticipated, he immediately scoughed and made me feel guilty for even asking. Oksana has relocated to Pini Swissa and continues to be my favorite esthetician in Boston (I posted this review both for her as well as the salon)! Let's face it, a bikini wax is never a pleasant experience, but Oksana makes it as comfortable as possible. I've tried many of the Boston salons (including "high-end" Newbury street ones) and she is definitely the best (and less expensive than some of those other places!) She manages to keep it both friendly and business-like, and does a fantastic job removing every single hair (whereas some of the other places I've definitely noticed a few hairs left over)...I would not go to anyone else. The salon itself was also very nice. The space is clean, modern, and has a relaxed feel. The receptionist was sweet and everyone treated me very nicely. I'll definitely be back...maybe I'll try them for my next haircut as well! read more

Pini Swissa is the best thing has ever happened to my hair-! :) After years of fearfully over-paying stylists to give me 1/2" trims lest they actually cut my hair and mess it up, I am so happy whenever I leave Pini's chair. He's amazing with layering and listens intently to what I'm going for. I don't need to style or blowout in any special way to get the look I need because he cuts in such a way that everything falls in its proper place. I especially love the volume I get with his cuts. This is by far, the best Salon in Boston. I love everyone there. Meriam has been my colorist for the past 10 years, I am almost 50 years old and my hair looks natural and glossy. She gives me more low lights in the Fall/Winter and more high lights in the Spring Summer. I get my hair colored 4 times a year, that is it, once a season and it always looks great. Pini cuts my hair and it changes slightly each time. I let him do his magic and my hair is always cut perfectly, on trend, and easy to maintain. I have a very busy life and the last thing I want to "do" is my hair every day. I just blow it dry, without doing much and it is good for 2-3 days. If I want to do something more spectacular, I go back to them for a blowout. Cannot recommend highly enough!!! Plus, they are just amazingly good people. read more

I had been hopping between different hair deals since moving to the city, never finding a salon or stylist good enough to warrant me sticking around. After just the first cut, I couldn't resist sticking with Erika! The prices are decent for the area, and having trained with Pini, she's been trying new techniques and finding even more fun styles to try. She listens very well, but isn't afraid to let you know when she thinks there's more she can do to best suit your face and style. Aw sheesh. (: Got another Gilt City deal for a cut, blowout, and styling session with Erika. I made the decision (more like got fed up of being at work and went here during my lunch hour on a whim) to get a pixie cut. I was able to cut (and donate!) 12". Honestly one of the scariest things I've done. Clearly I do not frequently live life on the edge. Pini Swissa himself came over and actually cut my hair a little bit as well. Ahh, the hands that have touched Tom Brady's beautiful locks did my hair! It was really adorable, I think he was even more excited than I was about my dramatic chop. Everyone at the salon was so nice and so encouraging. They could tell I was fairly alarmed and they all kept telling me how great it was already starting to look. (This was obviously a lie because at one point during the process I definitely had a bowl/mushroom thing going on.) Gigi just cut my hair with this crazy technique I've literally never had used on me and it looks amaaaaazingg!! I suck so bad at doing my hair but she knew exactly what to do with it to make sure it'd be easy to style in the future, and she walked me through how to make beachy waves. I (apparently) have thick hair and she made it so much lighter without feeling super thin or taking a ton of length off. I didn't even realize how much it was being weighed down. I made a suggestion for the style (long bob) but she thought it wouldn't go well with my face. I told her to do what she thought looked best and that was definitely the right decision. I love it!! Hope I added enough buffer to begin with! 3 stars for my first Pini appointment 5 stars for oksana's work I followed her here from Newbury Day Spa which closed. She is a-mazing with waxing. She was very professional, kept a conversation with me through the job so that I'm less focused on paying attention to the pain. When I did feel it, it was not too bad! She takes the time with tweezers to get all the hairs.. And she definitely uses new spatulas with each dip. The price has gone up slightly.. But I would pay to come to her. Have not found anyone better in boston thus far. Updating review because I've continued to try a few other places around Boston and she is still the best. Oksana is great but hope that their appointment times are more accurate, especially since I originally wanted the 1/2hr slot after mine anyway. Salons want to charge you for showing up late or cancelling then they need to discount you for making you wait past a certain time too. read more

When I realized that it had been nine months since my last cut, I knew I would need a professional to get me to really treat myself and get my hair back in shape (literally). With the help of a mutual connection, Kara and I connected over e-mail and planned my visit to the salon. I was looking for a cut (of medium length hair) and balayage to some degree. Over e-mail, I shared ideas with Kara through the use of a Pinterest board with different examples of ideas that I had. When I arrived at the salon, Kara handed me some water and we went to work. Because she also has fine, dark hair, she appreciated the fact that I was looking for a cut that would give me some dimension and just the right amount of chic with not a lot of maintenance. In short, Kara really gets hair. At least of the fine, dark, twenty something variety. I would recommend her to anyone who loves the minimalistic-feel in their salon, music they most definitely will be tapping their feet or quietly humming along to and a hair experience they'll look forward to over and over again. HALLELUJAH! I FINALLY found a great colorist and stylist in Boston. Cyndi did my cut and color at Pini Swissa, and I'm so glad I made the appointment. This is the first time I've walked into a salon with a photo of my goal hair color and walked out with it on my head: the perfect "beige blonde," as Cyndi called it. Cyndi listened to my likes and dislikes, explained what she was doing as she was doing it to calm my nerves, and didn't try to force her personal aesthetic onto my hair -- she just politely shared her professional opinion. Although Pini Swissa is a high-end salon, Cyndi does everything herself -- cut, color, blow dry, even shampoo -- which I LOVE. No assistants or trainees that make you feel like a guinea pig/mannequin head. Aside from being a kickass stylist, Cyndi is a delightful person to boot...which means a lot when you're spending 3 hours in her chair! I would highly recommend Cyndi, especially those wanting a better blonde. (I learned Cyndi spent about 10 years in LA, so she knows blonde like nobody's business.) read more

It turns out this place has two locations, a fact you would never know from their website (which is essentially useless, I would add ). When I made my reservation, they didn't mention that my appointment was at the Cambridge salon. So of course I showed up at the Newbury St. shop as it was only location I could have had any knowledge of. The receptionist was very polite and explained the second location situation. She said it was about 15 minutes away and offered to move my appointment back 15 minutes to let me get there. I agreed but when she tried to change it she saw that the new time slot was already booked, which means they had apparently only allotted 15 minutes for my cut. Helpful receptionist said I could wait a couple minutes and someone there would be available. I did. She brought me a big SmartWater because they are fancy but I just find complimentary bottled water stupid and wasteful. I was happy with the actual haircut, but I have really straight and easy hair to cut and all I needed was a trim, so that doesn't mean a whole lot. The charge was $60 which is kind of ridiculous for such a quick and easy men's haircut, I think. And I couldn't put the tip on my card, so I had to go down to an ATM and come back to tip, (which I halfway-considered foregoing after the $60 trim). This may be standard in Boston or New England I guess, but plenty of other places they have figured out how to put the tip on the card. Get with it Boston. Overall: decent haircut, super pricey, poor website, questionable management, I do not recommend. read more

I was a little nervous trying a new hair salon because I hate getting my hair cut and usually very critical. I had Erica as my hair stylist tonight. She is a very good listener, she respected that I wanted to keep the length of my hair and was able to give me a new "Edgy" hair style that still allows me to look professional. I've paid double her prices elsewhere and felt the same reaction. She also gave me a very good head massage when she was shampooing my hair. Kara does a great ballayage. I used to go to New York City to get it done because very few hair dressers in the area specialize in it, but she is terrific and it always comes out looking so natural. Anyone who still does foils should stronger consider ballayage whether you're a blonde or brunette - way to get more depth and natural tone in your hair. I got a Gilt CIty deal for a haircut from Erika and it was one of the best deals I've gotten! Erika did a wonderful job with my hair and went out of her way to show me how to curl my hair. She even sent me a follow up email about my hair. I would definitely recommend Erika and Pini Swissa for hairstyling. I also got a chemical peel (I forget who gave it to me but she was awesome) and it was good as well. She explained everything to me and did a good job, the mask at the end was great too. Oksana is the absolute best esthetician waxer in Boston. Probably all of MA. I used to go to her when she was at Newbury Day Spa (now closed) and found her again at Pini Swissa. She does an amazing job; is quick and thorough and makes the entire waxing process as painless as possible. She's also a lovely person, so definitely has a loyal and large clientele base - so much so that I hesitate to give her such a high rating for fear I won't be able to get an appointment if she books up from so many new people! :) But she is always able to squeeze me in and will probably do the same for you.
