You can expect surprise bills like this after they draw blood and accept cash payment at time of service, making you believe you're all paid
    Emily D.

I understand fertility doctors want to make money and I understand that this process isn't cheap, but my experiences with Dr Larsen and his office have me so upset that I wanted to write a review in the hopes that this doesn't happen to anyone else. We selected him because of his involvement with the LGBT community as we are a lesbian couple trying to conceive via donor sperm and IVF. During our first appointment, Dr Larsen met with us and told us the very basic process and how he works. He didn't even ask what we wanted, just assumed insemination and went with that angle for awhile before we interrupted to say we wanted to IVF to be able to do genetic testing and sex selection. What concerned my wife was that he acted like it was unethical do gender selection during IVF. When we expressed that we really wanted a girl, he said he'd check with his partner to see if it was okay. Of course he called the next day to say it was alright. This left a bad taste in my wife's mouth, but I wanted to give him another chance because I was confident he could get us pregnant. She felt his arbitrary ethical line was crossed for the prospect of money. The next appointment was for follicle count ultrasound and blood tests. Like the first appointment, payment was due at time of service. They broke it down for us and we paid $510 cash for both. They suggested more tests to look at my uterus that were over $1000, so we decided to get a second opinion and have since decided to go with another doctor. He got us an MRI for $400, which is a much more thorough exam than the $1000+ saline exam dr Larsen wanted to do check to out my fibroids more closely. We have since received bills for $5400 from an external lab for the blood test taken that day. We were not informed of this and not expecting this. My insurance does not cover any of this, and they knew at that time. When I called the doctor's office, they claimed I agreed to it. I might have signed some paper authorizing it (you sign a ton of papers) but nothing about what we agreed to pay. I find their business practices very upsetting. I felt taken advantage of. You will probably get pregnant here, but you will have lots of expensive, surprise and unneccessary (they require a psych evaluation before starting IVF) tests performed in the process.

Thanks to his expertise, we had one successful egg retrieval, one successful embryo transfer, and now have our beautiful baby. We are incredibly grateful and highly recommend Dr. Derman to anyone seeking fertility care. I can't wait for our second transfer. The office staff and communication were generally good, though sometimes you have to advocate for yourself to receive responses. The billing department isn't my favorite, as there were issues with incorrect coding and being told I owed balances, but overall I still enjoyed my experience.

I was referred by my OB/GYN for help with better management of my PCOS symptoms and the hope to get to a place where I could conceive naturally, or with minimal help/treatment. My first consultation with Dr. Derman was okay. He was professional, and initially made me feel heard. I was given two options for helping my PCOS: 1) lose weight, possibly with a GLP1 from my PCP, to see if that helped with my PCOS and allowed me to conceive or 2) jump into ovulation induction medications to get pregnant ASAP. Ultimately I chose to go the GLP1 route through my PCP and put a hold on option 2. Dr. Derman prescribed me a birth control, as he wanted me to try to regulate my cycle and I needed to be on BC if I started taking a GLP1. I started having "breakthrough bleeding" on the pill, which I was expecting. However, the bleeding lasted for 75 days. While it wasn't heavy bleeding the entire time, it was enough to have to use my menstrual cup every day for those 75 days. I reached out to the clinic a few times during those 75 days to express concern and to ask "how long is too long?" Every time I got the same answer, to continue taking the pill and that the bleeding was to be expected; that there was no concern unless I was filling my menstrual cup within a couple of hours. I discussed this with my PCP, who helped me make the decision to change my birth control pill. I started a new pill, and the bleeding stopped within 10 days. It was clear that the birth control Dr. Derman put me on was not ideal for my body...but they didn't seem to care, even when I told them the constant bleeding was taking a physical and mental toll. I decided to no longer seek any care through New Direction. To me, it felt like my care was put on the back burner since I wasn't trying to actively get pregnant. It felt like I wasn't worth their time or effort, and it was very disheartening. Sadly, this ruined their reputation for me. If I couldn't count on them to listen to a concern about a birth control pill, it doesn't instill a lot of trust that they'll be the right providers for me should I need fertility treatment.

I have been poked and prodded by inexperienced medical assistants that can't find a vein. I have been a customer for over a year and a half and haven't had a good interaction yet. I have spent countless hours communicating with CIGNA because their billing department always finds a way to overcharge. I've sent questions regarding IVF and have been sent the IVF introduction that they send everyone because the person on the receiving end was too busy to care. (Stupid me for not knowing the process and procedure already. How dare I come to a specialist with questions.) I have been patient, hopeful, and understanding. We are all human and have off days. Maybe my expectations are too high when it comes to customer service, my body, my future, and where I spend my hard earned money. I'm truly ashamed of ARMS and everyone that represents them. I went back to my primary care dr on base and they referred us to Dr Craig. His office is a lot farther from us but to be honest it is 100% worth the drive. From the very first appt with dr Craig in person was so easy and he went into great detail of all the test we did that day and wrote out a timeline txt plan. I really appreciated Dr Craig taking his time and sitting in person with me. The last office, I never met the dr in person. I did not like that at all. We asked for a sit down in person and was told those are phone appts. We did not like that. We unfortunately don't have a little baby running around yet but Dr Craig and his office have been so accommodating with our situation and have been very informative. I'm not a big fan of writing negative reviews but something tells me I need to speak up about my experience with them last summer and fall. I came to them on a referral from the VA which is very difficult to get in the first place. The VA actually recommended this facility to me because they had sent many women to them in the past. I should have done more research but it was on the spot so I agreed. From the start, Mary was extremely cold and seemed like she'd rather not be there. I saw her multiple times for multiple appointments and she was never very friendly. I actually felt like I was ruining her morning to be honest. I don't think I ever saw her smile. To be fair I always had an earlier appointment so maybe she's not a morning person but as a nurse myself I know many other nurses who would love to work there so that was just very off putting. Dr. Couvares (spelling?) was even worst. He was always cold, blunt and said some things that will unfortunately stick with me forever given the nature of the business there. He talks at you not with you. He goes on and on while you're still trying to process what he is saying. I was a labor and delivery nurse for almost 7 years and even for me the lingo he used was difficult to follow. I would ask questions and felt like I was a burden. I did all my lab tests and procedures on time as they instructed me to and was after that to make a separate video appointment than my husband to go over each of our results. I wanted to be together for those because it is such a sensitive topic and I lean on him to ask questions when I'm still stuck on the crushing terminology the doctor used just a second ago. Nope, had to be separate. So I took my last video call with the doctor in a parking lot in my car alone. He proceeded to talk at me for 15 minutes about what he saw which was not good news. Then tells me my ovaries are "circling the drain" and that the chances of me getting pregnant on my own are "slim to none". He told me that I'm also not a good candidate for IVF and if I was I should use donor eggs. I just sat and listened and tried to hold back tears. He left me with no options going forward. He just said oh you appear to have some inflammation somewhere in your body but we don't know where so I'm prescribing an acyclovir for you to take. He said work on diet and exercise and proceeded to lecture me on that without asking what I have done to be healthier since starting these tests months earlier. I had actually lost 25lbs since the start and was busting my butt in the gym. I'm only 165lbs at 5ft 5 mind you. I felt insulted and discarded in that moment. I got off the call and called my husband and bawled on the phone after. This doctors words and the way he made me feel will stick with me forever unfortunately. I'm not sure if it was because I came to him on a referral from the VA or because he knew I was a nurse but I can't shake how awful the whole experience was. Afterwards, nobody followed up with me. Months went by and I just kinda gave up on the idea of having a second baby. One positive takeaway was my experience with the blonde lady was very pleasant the two times she did procedures on me. I can't remember her name but I believe she was a PA there. She was amazing. Very warm and walked me through everything with care and sensitivity. Very professional and friendly both times. Do your research and go somewhere where the entire staff from start to finish handle your situation with care and understanding. It's hard enough for us women going through struggles trying to get pregnant or stay pregnant, we don't need more hurdles in the way. I hope this helps.
