I get the feeling that if you were to go out, buy your own easel, your own paintbrushes, your own canvas, and your own paint you would probably spend more than a visit to Pinot's Palette costs. Seems definitely worth the cost $35 per person in this case (Firefly Dance). The parking is terrible. It's street parking only, or $6 valet (which I couldn't find). Classes are on weekends so it's not like you could avoid lack of parking by going on a weekday. The venue is amidst a great number of bars, though so you could reasonably get a drink and a bite to eat before or after if that's what you'd like. The painting space is small (about 1000-1500 sqft I'd guess). There are 6 long tables. 8 people to a table. 4 on each side of a table so your painting is back to back with someone else's. The canvas is set on the easel when you walk in, and the paint is already poured out in the needed proportions on a paper plate which is covered by another paper plate. To your right is a water filled cup with 3 brushes (large, medium, and small). In the back are restrooms, two sinks for washing your hands or changing out the paint water, and a space with plastic silverware, wine glasses (both stemmed and stemless) and wine bottle openers. You can bring wine/beer and any food you want. Out of courtesy and convenience I'd recommend simple snacks only i.e. crackers, cheese, fruits as whatever foods you bring other people will smell and most other things will be hard to eat in the limited space you're given. There isn't much time for munching and drinking too much anyway when you're painting. Instruction is given vaguely - you're given a lot of free reign of your painting. You can even go to a stash of different colors of paint and change all the colors from the original, or I suppose just paint something entirely different if you wish. The latter might be a waste of money, though. They say things like 'take 2 scoops of white' or 'just draw an oval.' So it's not like they micromanage to create the perfect painting. In fact, the instructor's painting itself will look in many way different from the original that's posted online. And that's okay. Note: this is not a place to learn how to paint. You will know how to paint the painting you've chosen and that one only. The instructors are there to give you a good time, they'll compliment you more than they give you constructive criticism or critique. It's a feel good place -that's what it's built for. read more

My class was "Talking to the moon", and I had a wonderful evening painting. I've taken other Pinot's Palette classes but I felt that this instructor was probably the best. This location was also the original, first Pinot's Palette in Houston. Interesting tidbit! Although the painting doesn't exactly look like the original, I think the instructor did a great job teaching us and helping us during the class. Very friendly and kind! Time was not wasted at all, and the class moved on smoothly focusing on the painting and getting to the end. I was very worried about parking since I do not like street parking, so I try to come a little earlier. Parking is very limited, but I was very lucky to get a parking spot right in front. My advice is try to come earlier to see if you can get one of these nice parking spots in front. read more

We are always looking for something different to do so we signed up for an evening painting class at Pinot's Palette. The cost was $45/pp for a 3 hour lesson which included painting supplies, canvas and a smock. We were encouraged to bring our own wine and appetizers while they supply wineglasses, napkins and utensils. We took a class last night which was focused on recreating a painting of hot air balloons. All the students paint the same painting although the instructors are very easy going and don't really mind what you paint. The way it worked was that easels were set up for us all with paper plates squirted with different colors of acrylic paint. We were each given 3 different paintbrushes and a cup of water. There was an instructor who stood at the head of the class with a microphone and gave the lesson while she painted her own picture. There was another instructor who walked around and sweetly said "Oh, that's great" about everyone's canvas, no matter what it looked like. Which kind of brings me to why I only gave Pinot's Palette 3 stars. There wasn't enough instruction. It was just the gal up front telling us how she was painting her picture but there were few tips on how to get ours to look like hers. In other art classes I've taken, the instructor comes around and gives specific suggestions on what to do given the current state of the painting. That did not happen here. The best way to describe Pinot's "lesson" was that it was essentially a friendly demonstration. While that led to a genial atmosphere, it also made things frustrating for those of us who wanted to have a better looking painting but couldn't figure out how to create shadows, create depth, correct mistakes, etc... After 3 hours, I ended up with a hot air balloon painting that looked like it had been created by a 10 year old. My husband was so disappointed with his painting that he threw it away at the gas station where he stopped to get a beer on the way home. read more

If you're looking for a fun and creative activity that includes drinking, well look no further and bring yourself over here! This small studio offers a painting class that lasts anywhere from 2-3 hours (depending on which painting/class you choose) and is BYOB!! For a girl who can't even draw a straight line and still draws stick figures as a 30-something year old...I am utterly amazed at how well my paintings come out at each class ending. Maybe it's the wine goggles, I dunno, but the instructors here somehow have the patience and great teaching skills it takes to make an awesome painting. This is my 2nd time coming to this location and both classes were very enjoyable. The place is fairly small which makes it an intimate experience and the instructor can focus on you more intently. The instructor paints the proposed class painting of the day at the front of the class and teaches everyone step by step on how to create your perfect masterpiece. Both times I've been here the instructors have been super friendly and easy-going and have given great, detailed instructions. Don't be afraid to raise your hand and ask questions...they're very attentive to that too. Every class has an additional teacher/helper that walks around giving (helpful) pointers and assistance, as well. They don't serve alcoholic beverages here so don't forget to BYOB!! They do provide wine glasses and complimentary bottled water. And they also have a bucket of ice to chill your cold wine/alcoholic beverages as well. Also don't forget to BYO snacks to munch on during class!!! I definitely recommend this class for those unartistic people out there...you Will be surprised of your artistic abilities after this class. What a lovely establishment, and I learned that this Pinot's Palette was not only the first one in Houston, but also it was the first one in the US!. Yay, for them! And, for me, because it is still there. I've been to other locations before, but there was something nicer about this one. It was small and felt intimate. No matter where one sat in the classroom, one was never far from the instructor. All chairs were angled toward the center of the room (where the instructor did the instructing and painting), and if you're like me and need a "as close to paint by number as possible" type of solution, then this place is it. Again, because of its small size, intimate nature, and roaming teachers, I never felt I couldn't get help or just some agreeable input on my work. It was both rewarding and relaxing - - I suppose libations help a bit too. Toward the end of the evening, I thought to myself, "did I really do this well or am I wearing libation goggles??" I was recently convinced to take a class at Pinot's Palette. At Pinot's Palette you create a replica of a well known, or may not so know painting. Classes are given throughout the week. Weekday classes are 35 dollars and 2 hours while weekend classes are 3 hours and 45 dollars. I was there for a 3 hour weekend class. The class subject was a Van Gogh painting "Wheatfield with Cypresses." Everything you need is provided. Brushes, paints, an easel, the canvas, and an apron. The only thing you need to bring is wine/alcohol and food. I saw everything from cheese and crackers to a Whataburger combo meal. The class is split up by tables with eight seats each. Seats are assigned before class begins and your name is written on the table in chalk so you know where to sit. With eight people, tables were very cramped. I accidentally bumped a classmate's canvas multiple times. In my opinion, in elementary school I was a very talented painter (watercolor-er), so I knew I could easily reproduce a Van Gogh painting. Actually, I thought my painting would be a horrible disaster. I mentioned to a classmate that I thought my painting would turn out bad. She told me I'd be surprised at the end result. It turns out she wasn't a classmate, but was the teacher. The way the class works is everyone has a blank canvas and all the paint colors needed for the painting. The teacher is in the front with a blank canvas and the painting you are reproducing is also in front. The painting was a simplified version of the original. If you are expecting to be taught technical aspects of painting, this isn't the place for that. It's more along the lines of, watch the teacher paint, follow along, and enjoy yourself. You are free to ask questions at any time and the teacher comes around and checks your progress and gives suggestions. In the end, I thought my (everyone's) painting turned out well. It was actually a fun class that I would try again. I kind of felt out of place at the beginning of class considering the male/female ratio was around 2/30. For me, if you want to learn how to paint or just want to spend a fun night with colors and frames, you cannot get wrong: just go to Pinot's Palette. I have been here already 5 times, taking my gf and group of friends, because I wanted other people to enjoy the same fun I had. The staff is professional and really helpful. They will be happy to reply any single question you might have, even the most silly ones. If you want to make a good painting, they really care that you do your best. At the end of the session it looks like a masterpiece and you don't even believe that you made it. Of course you can take your painting home. Also, I like that they will make you paint real paintings. In other places they will make you paint a flower, a tree, a sunset. In Pinot's Palette instead, I painted some Van Gogh's, like the Starry Night. I'm really proud of my paintings I have home. By myself I wouldn't have been able to make them as they are. It is also a BYOB, so you can bring your wine, enjoy it, get a little tipsy and paint like a pro. Don't bring glasses, they have them. Take home message: "I'll go there again and again". This is a great night out for something different with a great combo of wine, socializing, and a stroke of creativity (ha! Get it? Like a paint stroke? Sorry it won't happen again...) For someone like myself who has no visually artistic bone in my body and zero idea of how to paint/draw/sculpt, this is a GREAT format for getting to be creative with a really helpful amount of structure. I'm guessing the reviewers who complained of being bored are perhaps more skilled in this area? Because I found it to move pretty fast and didn't have a chance to get bored. I love that Pinot's is solely dedicated to this event - you'll find other paint night events around town that take place in restaurants, but I had a much better experience here as that's what they specialize in! Unlike the other aforementioned places, Pinot's has the main teacher AND an assistant who can come by to help 1:1 but also is writing down the size of paint brush and color combo currently being demonstrated (it's really easy to get lost - you turn your back on the teacher for a swig of wine and then you realize it would be really easy to be that annoying kid in school bugging their neighbor: "what brush are we on?" "Holy crap when did we blend the mountains?" Also, everybody is there to have a good time, so you'll likely sit next to some nice folks and laugh at a rowdy group across the room that is totally sauced. BYOB, but there's not much place to put any snacks if you bring them - there's barely table space for a wine glass. They even have frames they will frame for you on the spot - so plan on spending a little extra if that interests you ($25-35). read more

This is not a place that you go to really learn how to paint. There are classes at community colleges and Leisure Learning for that. This is a place where you can sit, drink wine with friends, and paint a very specific picture, all for an enjoyable evening with no mess, no stress, and only good times. The hardest part about coming here is trying to find an available time. Book early if you want a chance in hell of painting something you'd actually care to hang in your home. Spots fill up quickly, and more than once I've looked at the calendar the first week of the month, only to see that every class is already sold out. When you do make it up to paint, arrive a bit early to set up your food and prepare your wine. I felt like a schmuck with just my glass of Riesling as I watched people bringing in cakes, fruit and cheese plates, and other goodies that made me drool into my vino. Bring food. You will want it. They provide glasses and corkscrews, so you don't have to worry about the technicalities. Wine is cathartic whilst you paint. I realized as I finished my first glass before the class had even started that I already felt like a better painter. Sobriety be damned!! Just kidding, they don't promote drunkenness here! They have all the tables set up with paints, brushes and canvas for when you arrive. This is my first major quibble. The brushes are a bit old, and there were times it was hard to get a good stroke with them. The tables were also incredibly cramped and there is barely room to put your wine glass down without being all up in your neighbors business. Whatevs. I'm not Frida Kahlo. I can work under less than perfect conditions. The instruction is good, but sometimes a teensy bit fast-paced. They show you how to create the painting you came to do, not how to be a painter in general. That is obviously an important distinction after reading some reviews on here. The concept is great, you get to pay to have an instructor lead a group to paint a famous piece of work (in our case, Van Gogh's Starry Night) and you get to take your it home. I went here recently for an event hosted by my apartment, and had a great time! It's only $35 to go to a session, which I think is a wonderful value. Sure, you could buy the supplies for cheap at Michael's, but they make painting convenient, fun, and the instructors are great. You can host a group event or just sign up for one of their open sessions. When you arrive, everything is all ready, all you have to do is set up your wine or snacks (they provide glasses, plates, etc.) and put on your apron! So easy. There were two instructors, one leading and the other moving around to assist. I am not unfamiliar to painting or art in general, and thought their instruction methods were very good. They provide guidance, but you can add your own creative touch. Also like their personalities. Since I had a little more experience, I followed the general plan but enhanced things as I wanted. And for those of you that also have experience painting, I felt like this was a really relaxing event. Typically when I make art, I have something in my mind, and can take it a bit seriously. But with this, I just went with the flow and enjoyed myself without stressing about what I was trying to do. And, like in art classes I have taken in the past, one of the best parts is seeing how everyone interprets the same image. What an absolutely fabulous afternoon! A girlfriend and I made plans about a month ago to check out Pinot's Palette and I was anxiously awaiting the day - and I have to say it did NOT disappoint. Drinking wine makes just about any activity better so I figured this place couldn't be half bad... We brought fruit/cheese/wine. Pinot provided the plates, utensils, napkins, wine glasses (they had champagne glasses, too!) and corkscrews. They even had complimentary water. We got all set up at our easels and the class began promptly at 2:00. You can pick your class ahead of time, so you know what you'll be drawing and so you know what you'll be going home with. The easels, canvas, paints, brushes are all provided in the cost of the class - $35 for two hours. A teacher at the front of the class walks you through the painting step by step. After giving directions, they play a song or two for you to paint too and when the music gets low you know it's time for your next direction. As you paint, friendly artists circle around offering assistance and advice as requested. It's a very laidback environment where you're encouraged to be creative and just have fun! My painting will be proudly displayed in my house for sure! And I know I'll be back too : ) I highly recommend this for a date, girls night out, bachelorette party kick-off or any other special occasion. The studio..is great in the Midtown area amid houses and near Ziggy's! I had arrived a little early so I got to chat with Ashley and Erin, who were just great! The set up is great in here! I put my bottle of wine on the counter and poured a glass while I perused the other paintings! Now for painting time..I was a little nervous as I have not many artistic bones in my body! I like your brush stroke. This place did not disappoint. I can't say enough about how much fun this was and what a great idea this place is, but that's all already been said. I hope the operation stays as affordable and quaint as it is now! Now if only I could have a personal cheerleader all day like the artists who walk around fooling you into thinking you are a natural. I have to especially give them a shout out for their genuine customer service. These classes sell out incredibly fast. I purchased two tickets weeks before one class I ended up not being able to attend. Instead of forfeitting my money or spot because I found out pretty last minute that I couldn't go, they gladly let me reschedule to a later date and then refunded the excess money for the difference in prices. I decided to awaken the artist inside me last week and signed up for their "Starry Night" class offered on a Friday night. I grabbed my cool girlfriends, my favorite bottle of wine, hummus and brie and headed to Pinot's Palette for what ended up being a fabulous night! The class starts at 7, but you should get there around 30 minutes before, specially if you are bringing snacks to set up. They assign your seat, so if you are coming with friends, you should let them know when you sign up so everyone can sit together. They have everything set up for you: the canvas, paints and brushes. The teachers are great and friendly! They guide you through the painting, but in the end is your own creation, so you can add/omit whatever you want if that is what you desire. They also have around 3 breaks so you can stand, talk with your friends/date, mingle with the other painters if you want and sip on some wine. The instructors were fun and very clear. We brought wine and snacks, and so did other people. There were tables in the back where everyone put their food & wine. We got a buzz and made art all at one time! We had a blast and left with a nice painting. It's hanging in my house and I still get compliments on it. We ended going a 2nd time and it was just as fun. This is the first location that my hubby and I go to for date night. We always have a fun time. Parking is a little hard though because they do not have their own parking lot but it's a great place. I've been here many times and each time I've had fun. Great place for date night and girls night. I always have a great time drinking, chatting, and painting at Pinot's Palette. I really never knew that I paint so well. Haha. It's like paint by numbers but not really.
