They allow way too many people on the rink at any given time, making it very dangerous! Little kids use these "skate buddies" and are constantly falling right in front of you, causing a domino effect of people falling and getting hurt. I've seen so many people get injured due to the extremely crowded rink and lack of safety-rule enforcement. Their monitors (referees) don't do anything. There are groups of people that stop in the middle of the skate traffic to take pictures, there are people skating in the wrong direction, and sitting all over the edge of the rink, etc.. etc...and I've watched as these workers repeatedly just skate on by, not intervening one bit. Also, the employees use this intercom to constantly call people for their orders, it blasts throughout the entire place and literally hurts my ears. I've also experienced teens sitting on the floor, legs outstretched, blocking the entire walkway...and ignoring people who ask them to move. I wish there was somewhere else halfway decent to go in Austin, as we would go there in a heartbeat. God help me every time I take my kids to Playland. Seriously ridiculous. read more

This place is fun for the family. My complaint is that they nickel and dime you. They attract the kids with a playground then charge you for it. They don't tell you when you buy your tickets at the front that if you need the skate mate skate helper and to play in the playscape each are an extra fee. Now that wouldn't be the worst thing but then you have to pay at the front again. Go prepared when you go. If you can get past that, the kids had a blast! read more

I've been going to Playland Skate Center for many years and my children and I always have a blast. Today, however, we had a much different experience. The man at the front desk was an absolute... how do I put this? ASSHOLE. We arrived at 4, completely aware that we would have only and hour to skate, and this employee was rolling his eyes and became irate when I asked to purchase some tickets. My children skated while I watched from the side, they seemed to be having fun. As soon as the last song played, my kids began to take off their skates and we were ready to head home. This MAN has the audacity to raise his voice and me and my young children saying "GET OUT! SERIOUSLY! WE'RE CLOSED!" I most certainly did not appreciate his tone or the way he aggressively folded the tables and pushed them against the wall. He had NO right to speak to me that way, there were MANY other families still at their tables and I did not like being called out like that. That was such an unpleasant experience, I have never in my life encountered such a rude employee, or person for that matter. We will not be coming back. read more

If you're willing to take a chance on being robbed, feel free to go to this place. My husband took my daughter to a birthday party here and when they got to the parking lot, found that someone had smashed a rear window on his truck and stole his briefcase and my son's football equipment out of the back seat. When he went back inside to report it and ask someone to call the police, he was told that "the police never catch these guys" and that this happens several times every month. Knowing this, their security consists of one of their employees walking out to the parking lot a couple of times a night. I will never take any of my family back to this business for any reason. Attending a child's birthday party has cost us about $250 so far to repair damage to our vehicle and we are out several hundred dollars in stolen items. I don't care how fun the skating is, it's not worth what we've gone through. read more

Make eyes at Michael, the ponytailed skate instructor, and hope for a couples skate- he will take you back to your childhood when you rolled around the rink without a care in the world. I was pleasantly surprised by our experience. I reluctantly scheduled our son's birthday party for Saturday from 7-9PM knowing that it would be super crowded and chaotic. I chose the large party package which covered 21 skaters, 3 tables, play scape wristbands for the littles, and 3 pitchers of the soft drinks of our choice. Stephanie called me a few days in advance to confirm the party and cost and give helpful instruction. She also emphasized no outside drinks or confetti were allowed, nor glow things with connectors. Check in was super easy and smooth and no one laughed at me for bringing in my wagon. We had three tables in the café area, which was well lit and allowed an escape from the noise. The placement of our tables was perfect, back corner and out of the way. Our host, Carrie, was very attentive, even though she was serving at least 2 other large parties. Playland allowed us to bring in our own food. I figured we would have to purchase additional pitchers but Carrie kept us hydrated with pitchers of ice water. Checkout went smoothly as well. The lady who closed us out was very personable and asked if we had fun. It turned out that we only had 18 skaters and essentially paid for 21 as part of the package - but I knew up front what the cost was going to be and I'm glad we had the extra table space. Everyone had a great time. This experience exceeded my expectations. read more

If it was possible to choose no stars, I would choose none. The management and staff at this rink have absolutely no regard for their customers or any limitations they may have. My daughter was invited to a birthday party over the weekend. She has a severe milk allergy. They were serving pizza, cake & ice cream. Let me add, the pizza is from Pizza Hut. The birthday child's mom had enough on her plate with getting the party together so we said we would pick up something our child could eat. We stopped at McDonald's on the way in and got a Happy Meal (chicken nuggets). When we arrived at the rink, I made the mistake of explaining that not only did we need to skate, but I also needed to take the food into our child. We were promptly told there was no outside food allowed. I explained the situation and how she has a severe milk allergy and would go into anaphylactic shock if she ate anything with milk or dairy. We were told again "too bad". She also said that if she let us bring in outside food, then other people would complain that they wanted to bring in food as well. I asked if all the other people had children that would go into anaphylactic shock if they ate the food provided. It wasn't until after I continued to push back and repeat myself that I was told I could go in and get my daughter and she could eat in the parking lot and then re-enter. Seriously? It is 8pm at night and you want me to go get my daughter, pull her away from her friends, and then have us sit out in the dark, dimly lit parking lot to eat her chicken nuggets? And after reading other reviews about the thefts in the parking lot, I am shocked this was even an option! I went in, got my daughter and had her eat her food in the lobby. Did I mention the pizza that was provided for the party was from PIZZA HUT???? Isn't that outside food??? Anyway, while my daughter was eating I asked to speak to the manager. He gave me nothing but excuses. Told me how his employee "just didn't understand". Really? I don't know how clearer I could be - IF SHE EATS DAIRY, SHE COULD DIE. It doesn't get any clearer than that! He said that I could've taken the actual box of chicken nuggets out and showed the ticket lady that box and that we should've been let in. I advised him that at no point was that an option, or I would've done that. He just shrugged and said he didn't know what to do. How about have a talk with your employee, apologize and maybe try to fix the situation? It was quite obvious he didn't care about the situation at all. Bottom line - this business clearly does not care about their customers. They only care about getting as many people in as possible, which was completely evident by the massive amounts of people inside. Maybe the fire marshall should take a trip out there some Saturday night - I'm sure the place is outside of code. read more

The skating rink is decent and my kids had fun. It does seem to get crowded, but amazingly enough I didn't see any accidents among the skaters. The staff on the other hand is poorly trained. Unprofessional with absolutely no customer service skills. They could do better informing customers coming in about the extra charges to use the "skate mate" and playscape. Instead, we walked back and forth from the entrance all the way to the back several times trying to figure out where to pay for those extras. Staff was not very helpful. read more

This is a great skating rink in north Austin. It's vey clean and they played a variety of music. You can rent rollerblades and 2 types of skates. The only bad thing is the food was not good but it's typical roller rink food. I'll still go back but will eat before I go. My kids did't seem to mind the food. They have candy, pop corn, cheese sticks, corndogs, pizza, etc. We had a lot of fun. read more

Very poor customer service! Rude staff! $8 admission for NON-participating 4-year-old children! Upcharge for EVERYTHING (playscape, roller blades, etc...) !!! Next time I will let my 4 year old watch his siblings play at Main Event or anywhere else for free! My friend was asked "Do you have any food or water in your purse?!" I skated here when I was a kid and now my daughter skates here. It's a pretty straight up smelly skating rink with that crazy multi colored carpet. It gets the job done. There are snacks, a little arcade, and a playscape for the littles. Unfortunately, the bathroom is completely inaccessible by wheelchair. I sure hope I don't have to pee in the next hour! read more

I took my 9 year old daughter and two girlfriends to celebrate her birthday. We had a blast!!! I have not been on skates in 30 years but managed to stay upright. The facility was clean, staffed well and nice and "cool" in this heat. I chose the old fashioned quad skates - but the girls wanted in roller blades (extra $3 a pair). The skates were in good condition. Prices at the snack bar were average. They also had these triangle supports made of PVC pipe on wheels for those struggling with balance - ingenious! Great skating floor, fun lights, so so music but still gets you going and the entire family has fun skating. I rate this so low because of the staff. I have been here numerous times recently and haven't managed to draw out a smile from any of the staff yet. They each have an unwelcome and negative attitude which makes for an unfriendly atmosphere. They are also rude. Its a pity because a polite and welcome staff would have earned them a 5 in my book! read more

We had my daughter's 7th birthday party at Playland this past weekend, and I was so pleased with the service we got from the staff. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. The kids had a blast. Just had my 12 year old's birthday there. It was reasonably priced, the parents and kids had a great time. Other things people wrote here, like having to leave a driver's license or problems bringing food in did not happen with us. They don't let you bring in drinks, which is a minus because their snack bar drinks are a rip off but that's pretty standard for birthday party places. Would have liked to have a staff member clean up, but the staff were very good about getting parents and kids in skates quickly. They let you stay past party time which I think is nice--my daughter and friends stayed an extra hour. They have a playscape for toddlers as well--that is nice if I have my son with. They do need a changing station in the bathroom--it is weird to me that they have the playscape and area for kids to practice but no changing station. We will go back. read more

I only gave this one star because of the lady working the front desk. My 2 yr old grandson had torn off his wrist band for the skate buddy and when we were rolling past the front desk she tried to take it away from him and wanted to charge me another five dollars. Also i would not recomend having a party there. They cram as many people as possible in to one hot litte room. This room is mabe big enoough for 2 or 3 parties but they had 4 or 5 going on at the same time. We had to move the party to one of the tables in the main area just to be able to move around to serve cake. The place over all is nice and a lot of fun for the kids. i would recommend having the party else where though. read more

I came here on a Saturday afternoon, between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm, with the family and had a blast. The place started filling up around 7:30 pm with the night crowd. This is your typical roller skating rink that is so similar to the ones that I visited when I was growing up, except this one had some extras that weren't around when I was younger. Great place. Unfortunately we did not have the best experience here. On their website it states they have designated days during the week for parties, so we went on a non-party day thinking it would be less crowded. I guess they meant they only have exclusive parties, not ALL parties...showed up to see the complete opposite. They had multiple children parties and too many children on the skate floor that I honestly felt it was unsafe. I think it's better if they designate separate times for children and adults for safety purposes. There were too many children falling and I did not notice anyone regulating. Kids don't understand so they start cutting through rather than going around, which is completely understandable given they are children...however when you have adults skating fast and all around then it becomes unsafe. I would probably not go here again unless it was early in the week such as Monday or Tuesday, assuming it will be less busy. read more

This is a nice place and adult night has a cool crowd of people who already skate really well, but just a tip--if you are a beginner, do not go to adult night. I'm not an experienced skater, and I was totally freaked out by all the really talented folks zooming past me and coming within inches. I figured that was just par for the course and that I should just deal with it until one of them slammed into me as he was trying to do a trick and then chastised me for being in his way. He told me that if I wanted to go slow, I should be in the middle of the rink instead of staying by the rail (confusing, since I read up on roller rink etiquette just to make sure not to commit a faux pas, and every site I read said that slower skaters SHOULD stay near the outside--as I did--while more experienced skaters should be in the middle). Maybe this is a rule at this particular place, but it wasn't posted anywhere or anything...Furthermore, staff came and checked on him even though I was the one who had been pushed down and then chastised by him and his group of friends (I'm a small woman; they were middle aged guys). If you are a slower skater or might be shake-y on skates at times, don't go to adult night. I really thought I was following etiquette like I was supposed to, and now I'm in bed elevating my ankle. Other reviews say that adult night is for all levels, but I would leave it to the pro's if you don't want to get in people's way or get hurt. At any other time though, I'm sure it would have been an awesome experience. It's a clean and upbeat place and it's not Playland's fault that someone got in my face. read more

I was pretty excited to go here because I hadn't been skating in years--I went with my sister and my niece and hoped to have a great time. We went on a Tuesday so it wasn't terribly crowded. The woman at the ticket counter was RUDE! She was goofing around with her co-worker while I was trying to pay for my tickets. Turns out, Roller Blades are extra! Really? I'm paying for admission AND BROKEN BLADES? The woman at the counter was rushing me like I was going to slow and it was really frustrating. Well, we get in the area with the rink and we get our skates. We put them on and I take my niece out to skate (She's 8) and she's falling over so I go to ask for one of those rollers to prop her up. I figure they offer them as a courtesy but NOPE. I have to pay 5 DOLLARS to PROTECT my little niece while she skates. FIVE FREAKING DOLLARS for a CHILD to be SAFE. But I pay it because I want her to enjoy her self. Did I mention that they say they charge a "two dollar fine" if you are chewing a piece of gum? What is this? HIGH-SCHOOL??? They charge for every little FREAKING THING. I'm surprised they even had water fountains would have expected bottled water. I didn't get a chance to try any of their food (The food court is closed during the 3-6 skating time--which I think is ridiculous). The skating was fun (except my skates and my sister's skates were broken--go figure.) But it wasn't terribly crowded and the music choices were Teeny-bopperish but there are a lot of children there. If you go here: BRING YOUR OWN ROLLER BLADES. There's SUCK. But as for me, I WILL NOT be returning. read more

i'm someone who skates at playland pretty regularly, but i've been recently discouraged due to one of the employees attitude. she's a young teenager with short, dark hair and red vanillas. she is so rude every single time i cross paths with her ! she snaps at people a lot and honestly acts like she owns the place. one time i was waiting outside the bathroom patiently waiting for her to finish cleaning the bathroom. when she came outside after she finished i said "thank you" but what she said in return was "you could have just used the family bathroom. you do not have to wait on me." she said it with such a rude tone and just stared at me. there has been other times where i have just seen her acting so inappropriately towards kids telling them the rules in such a bad manner. when i tell you this, i mean it. i have never, ever seen her act in a professional, nice way ! i'm not sure if it's towards everyone, but she acts like that every time i see her interact with a customer or skater. i have never even seen her wear a name tag, so i can't give her name. some advice, if you don't like your job, quit it ! don't take it out on customers ! read more

*edited* They have the nicest skate floor in Austin for sure and we are usually happy to drive across town to come here passing two other rinks on the way. We purchased a pair for my daughter since she enjoyed it so much. Today however we were told that despite paying the same admission as everyone else in the building, my daughter couldn't use rental skate without turning in collateral of her personal skates. Her skates are brand new and need to be adjusted so she wanted to use rentals. The 8 year old who owns her own pair of high end skates is the suspicious person in the place? I edited this review after speaking to the manager who explained the policy is to prevent non-paying people from using the extra skates. Fair enough, except all children pay an entrance fee so no risk of someone pulling a fast one with my daughters size 3 skates. It hurt her feelings and the manager apologized to her so I'll call it a draw for now. Maybe post this rule somewhere so that do run the risk of look discriminatory in the future. read more

My 14 year old daughter and her friend went to a lock in here last night from 7pm - 7am. It cost $30, which to me was pricey for a dated skating rink, but the advertisement promised food& fun which was pizza, hotdogs, nachoes and drinks and multiple games throughout the night (dodge ball, air hockey and basketball tournaments). I picked up the girls this morning at 6:30ish to find out there was no food other than purchasing concession food in addition to the $30 fee to get in. Several children (younger than 14 yr olds) were there having serious make out sessions out in open in the rink area and getting even more hot and heavy in the restrooms. Parents beware, the lock in is a perfect opportunity for your young daughter or son to meet up with their secret boy/girlfriend and do whatever they want. As for tournaments, the only actual tournament was dodgeball. The air hockey was held on one aged air hockey game machine, as well as the basketball tournament being on one of the little game machines you find at Chuck E. Cheese or Dave and Busters. Rip off - just take the kids somewhere else. read more

First time there and was unlucky enough to get behind a birthday party checking in and the mom had a million questions. It would have great if the girl behind the window had a second person there to help her to keep the line moving. The rates for skating are very reasonable but you get nickeled and dimed after you get in. The pvc pipe " trainers" to help kiddos skate was $ 5.00 each... for pvc pipes on wheels. They're okay helping the kiddos somewhat but my son actually did better if he had an adult hold each of his hand. Less falling and it was easier for him. Then the playscape is not free... It's another 3 dollars and after 20 minutes, my son was bored with it. Plus the lockers costs 50 cents every time you need something. So take extra quarters with you. We did have a good time tough and the rink looked like new flooring, in fact all the different surfaces were good. The other downside was the staff. They acted like they did not want to be there and any question you asked was a bother to them. They need a lesson in customer service. There were two standouts though as the two concession ladies were friendly and the one girl helping with the birthday parties appeared helpful and friendly. I might go back but will try other rinks here and compare. read more

Took my daughter and friends here this past Saturday 4/19/13 I paid with credit card for eight people, but I only had seven with me, we were waiting on another child to show up,so we all went in got the kids there skates. We got a phone call the other kid was out there and I sent my niece to pay, wrong idea I guess I should have went, they thought we were reusing a ticket, so the lady at the door snatch the ticket and tore it up and accused her of reusing a ticket. so we got that straight, then few mins later I am approached by this lady again saying I paid for eight kids, which I did but she stated I had them all there with me, is this lady on stupid or what, she stated she had me on camera, which I don't care if you had me on the news,1 rude,2 rude, she stated she could prove it because another one of there works notice I had all eight there with me too. Once again I stated I came with seven and call all seven back to my area, then we got a manager which still she stated I need your receipt and I will take a look at the camera, go ahead do what you have to do, once again un professional staff there and they need to get some new people in there. I am sitting their minding my own business and here comes these clowns again with an apology and some free tickets, how bout you give me my money back for the for harassment.. yeah that kind of day at play land they suck, the only one who came up to me to make sure everything was ok was Oscar he need to run that place he has a great personality and people skills.
