California Arizona Border - New California sign - Highway 10 west exit 243, right after the California Arizona border checkpoint

That's right. This isn't just a roadside pit stop. It's a historic checkpoint with a purpose: keeping California's crops safe, thriving, and pest-free. Back in the day, agricultural quarantine was a big deal (still is, honestly), and this station is part of a frontline defense against invasive species, plant diseases, and any suspicious fruit hitching a ride across state lines. On 98% of my trips, they don't even stop you. Most crossings don't even have attendants in the booths. I do remember the few and rare occasions where you pull up, smile, and get ready to answer the question, "Are you carrying any fruits, vegetables, or plants today?" They're checking for the usual suspects: fruits, veggies, nursery stock, hay, firewood... basically anything that might be harboring a bug with bad intentions. It's serious business, but the staff here usually manage it with a friendly nod and a no-nonsense vibe that says: We love your road trip, just don't ruin our avocados. So while it's not a flashy tourist attraction, it is a quiet hero of California's agriculture game and a reminder that even the humble border station can have legacy, impact, and a whole lot of purpose. They really do be the guardian of the grapes.

Nowhere else on my 8600 mile drive across the United States where I drove through 22 states (NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, TX, NM, AZ, CA, NV, OR, ID, WY, NE, SD, MN, WI, MI, OH, KY, TN, GA, SC, NC and you'll see it with my reviews if you zoom in on https://www.yelp.com/collection/WH-_Pak3OcycqMfuny5tXQ) did I have a "border" except here, crossing over into California. Even Texas - the Lone Star State - doesn't care about people entering from other states. Since the 1920's, California has had these agricultural inspection stations where they're looking for pests being brought through. Thankfully, I was waved right on even though I have a North Carolina license plate. I'm in a non-commercial Sprinter van so how would they know I don't have any plants or such that might carry pests? Dunno. I'm not sure the legality of the inspection. Can they demand opening your trunk or opaque boxes without a warrant? Can they order the driver out of the vehicle? What if they "smell" marijuana? Can they make an arrest if they find something illegal? I want a lawyer! [Review 17528 overall - 325 in California - 1046 of 2022.]

In over 50+ times we've driven through, we have only been stopped one time. The border agent asked us if we had any produce or animals. We just said, "No," and we were then waived right on through. It is the build-up above the top flange of the girder upon which the deck slab is supported. It's like a shim that fills the join space and allows a constant thickness for the roadway deck because the roadway plates are generally flat and the girder has a camber shape to it for strength. And that's all I ever want to know about haunched decks! This bridge was originally built in 1960 and was updated in 1974. It carries Interstate 10 / US Route 95 over the Colorado River and joins Ehrenberg Arizona with Blythe California. It is completely functional and without any ostentation. It is 94 feet wide and has two lanes in each direction with two breakdown lanes on each side and a pedestrian walkway on the north side. A simple sign in the center indicates the state line. If it is dedicated for someone, I could not tell. It is worth nothing that this is not the same I-10 bridge that collapsed in 2015. That one was 50 miles west of here, https://www.azcentral.com/story/money/business/economy/2016/01/08/doomed-fail-collapsed-interstate-10-bridge-crucial-design-flaws-study/78417260/. See the news report https://youtu.be/wkS89dCA67w. This is a separate structure from the Blythe-Ehrenberg Suspension Bridge that you can see to the south. That is simply the El Paso Natural Gas Pipeline with the towers painted an alternating red/white scheme for high visibility. [Review 17526 overall - 110 in Arizona - 1044 of 2022.]

Barcelona started at a tapas bar where we chose tapas from a buffet in a rustic atmosphere of archways made of giant stones, Then a Barcelona tour that included architecture from the Roman era to Gaudi's creations and a view of America's Cup race in the Marina. A train took us to Alicante where we stayed in a Palace that was 100 feet away from the plaza full of sidewalk cafes! Paid a visit to the Miguel Cervantes tribute (Author of Don Quixote), the plaza, and marina. Next was Seville, where we took a tour and stopped at a Pizza restaurant -- walked around some landmarks, and prepped for our 4 days in Madrid. There we had an amazing Tapas and Wine Tour, visited Prado Museum, and other historical sites, and yes, discovered some amazing cafe/restaurants right around the corner from our hotel. Found the best Paella in Spain, discovered new wines, and found a restaurant "Jardin Secreto" overlooking the plaza. (from a list of hidden dining gems thanks to tour guide Patricia Willems.) There is no way I could have arranged or found everything myself. It was definitely a one-of-a-kind experience.

If you would like to just learn more about the community through the different cultural classes, just sign up for the emails and you can be alerted for upcoming classes that they offer. I've taken amigurumi (crochet), ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), and a cooking class. All of the instructors are great and mostly volunteers. So it just shows you what a great community there is. They have festivals through the year and also help put on the West Covina Cherry Blossom Festival. They also host the West Covina obon at the center but it is organized by the Buddhist church which is based out of the community center. So there is just a lot of activities that you can get involved with.
