We visited Pioneer Park for the first time recently, and while it's definitely a beautiful and unique spot, our experience was a bit mixed . We didn't really know where to start when we arrived, and there wasn't much direction, so we ended up just climbing the first rock formation we saw. Honestly, if it weren't for a group of people ahead of us, we probably wouldn't have had any idea where to go. I was hoping to make it to the arch, but the climb felt a little too steep and slippery, especially with kids. We were carrying our three-year-old and keeping a close eye on our six-year-old, who was feeling a bit more adventurous than we were comfortable with in that terrain. We didn't make it very far in and mostly just stopped to take a quick photo so we could say we visited. It was also pretty hot, with the sun beating down the whole time, which made it harder to explore and enjoy the park fully. That said, the park itself is really nice, and you can tell there's a lot to see if you're prepared and know where you're going. I'd recommend going earlier in the day, bringing plenty of water, and maybe looking up a map or trail guide ahead of time, especially if you're visiting with young kids. Overall, it's a cool place, but we didn't get to experience it as much as we had hoped. Definitely worth another try with better planning! read more

I took my dogs on this trail for a hike and they were happy and tired! HAha. Amazing rock formations and views! It's only 1hr and 45 mins drive from Las Vegas. This little park is cute. And free. And easy to find and navigate. I heard this park had an easy level slot canyon. One in our travel group had mobility challenges, so I wanted to hit this park to make sure they could experience a slot canyon of SOME kind while we were in Utah (We found other, better ones they could do elsewhere, later in the trip). Anyway, this little park has a bunch of parking areas right near little things to do and visit, including the slot canyon. It is a short, canyon, but it does qualify. If you have young ones, older ones, or maybe just ones that arent adventurous types take them to this slot canyon to get a tiny taste. Our visit to the park was short, only about 20 minutes, but you can spend a good half day there if you explored the other sights. read more

My friend and I were passing through St. George on our mini road trip out West, and I zoomed in on the city on the map to see if there were any worthwhile quick stops. I noticed Pioneer Park and that it wasn't far from the highway, so we pulled off to check it out. It was a very popular park with lots of other folks walking around the rocks. The "cabin" structure within it was really neat to check out too! It also offered great views of the city. I'm so glad we stopped. read more

Needed something to do before checking into my hotel and this was on the way there....I was so surprised I had never heard of this location after doing all my research prior to my visit to Zion. There's free parking, unlocked bathrooms, water bottle fill ups, lots of trails, and it is genuinely one of the cleanest parks I've ever been to. Some really awesome plants with information and history markers. I highly recommend going here with or without other people- theres space to follow your heart's desire and hike up any rocks you find, there's enough freedom where you aren't crowded with other people on 1 trail. read more

Pioneer Park is like a mini mini national park of red rocks. One can climb around and hike the red rocks and cliffs. There is a slot canyons where we hike through a very very narrow slot, definitely not for those who are claustrophobic. Once you choose where to park, there are several small parking lots, you can do easy to strenuous hikes. Most people try the slotted canyon, if you are thin enough you can climb out the other end of the canyon. Great place for photos and testing your claustrophobia. The views are amazing from several locations, just choose a mountain and start climbing. Highly suggest the baby arch, just follow the trails. There are picnic tables if you wish to take a break and have a snack. Great place to let your kids go wild, guaranteed to fill their need to climb and use up excess energy. Even Great views of the surrounding area without climbing. This park can easily take as little as 90 minutes or all day. Plan ahead, have the right footwear, bring plenty of water and snacks. read more

I love this place and it's a nice quick stop when going between Ivin and St. George. I recommend definitely going in the middle of the week as the weekend makes it hard to get parking. With that said if parking is not available at the upper lot there is another one down below the main rock. read more

Park de Triomphe Beautiful 52-acre park located at the edge of Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (RCNCA) and is a rock climber's dream. This is the place to see the entire city of St. George. Take a photo sitting on top of the "Dixie" sign. Hiking on red rocks and find your own way. Go to the cute little arch and rest under. Growing up in St. George, Pioneer Park was a regular stop for us. Whether we were looking for a small hike, a scenic view of the city or a place to take cool pictures, this is a place I have visited dozens of times. Now, whenever I visit St. George, we almost always stop here during our stay. It's just off the beaten path, so you don't have to go far out of town to get that "red rock" experience. In fact, you'll have a magnificent view of the town from up here. Come early and enjoy the sunrise, or come in the evening to see a sunset and then the twinkling lights of the city below. There is plenty of space to be able to wander and get a little climbing in. Nothing that will require special gear; it's perfect for amateurs or young kids who just want to explore a little. Parking is limited, although there is a small lot available. Come during off-peak times to avoid crowds. And PLEASE be sure to pack out anything you take with you. This place could be so much better with some simple educational signs from LNT.org. Litter everywhere and no protection of this beautiful area. Yes, it was fun to climb everywhere but I guarantee this place will be completely destroyed within a decade because of the trash, graffiti and fires. We picked up trash that filled several bags and broken glass was everywhere. I would not bring my dog here. Sad that people don't respect nature. read more

What an amazing place to explore. The views. The hiking. The rock scrambling. Its all so rugged but there is a certain beauty found in that ruggedness. The red rocks and the green trees provide a stark contrast when you see them next to each other. It is a nearly unspoiled beauty that one can only find in the desert. There are so many little nooks to explore around every twist and turn of the mostly open park. The trails are there but not real well defined. You could almost forget that you are not in the wilderness far far away from civilization. That is until you see people. And the city below. And the safety railing placed on certain rocks for your protection. Regardless, this is a great place to get lost, figuratively. The park is clean with very little graffiti that I could see. The restroom facilities were well maintained except for not having any hand soap in the one I paid a visit to. The people I came across were polite. In a Mars-like landscape where dinosaurs once roamed, Pioneer Park is out-of this-world adventure. Within the South Utah universe, it is in a world of magnificent parks made up of Zion National Park, Snow Canyon State Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Anasazi Trail, and numerous grand parklands. Rising above the City of St. George overlooking downtown stand the picturesque red sand stones that frame the northern edge of St. George. There have been a few times that I have felt like a pioneer exploring this frontier of red rocks, sandstones and nature in the northern reaches of St. George, Utah. Pioneer Park is an example of a special place giving so much in exchange for so little. From Interstate 15 it is an easy drive north on Bluff Street to Red Hills Parkway which leads to the two paved parking lots. Parking is free. With its sandstone dome, hills, Arches, rocks, slot canyon, and Dixie Rock; Pioneer Park is a rock climbers dream. Ditto for hikers. What makes this a hikers dream is that the 52-acre Pioneer Park is joined to the 60,000-acre Red Cliffs National Desert Reserve. Pioneer Park is a gateway into this mammoth preserve. On account of the fact that they are connected, Pioneer Park shares the same attributes. The protected wildlife in the reserve that includes desert tortoises, bunny rabbits, chuckwalla pelicans, gila monster lizards, and sidewinder rattlesnakes can pass through the invisible boundary into Pioneer Park. This invisible boundary is in the vicinity of the transition zone where the Mojave Desert, Great Basin, and Colorado Plateau come together. Within this contiguous super park lives the protected drawf bear poppy that only exists in the St. George area. The most recent time that I partook in this out-of-this-World adventure the first part was exploring Pioneer Park proper then getting on the T-Bone Trail on a long hike into the reserve. The Red Cliffs National Desert Reserve is a separate business listing. In the near future I will write on my real life experiences there. My adventure in Pioneer Park started before parking my car in the smaller west parking lot. The drive to the park on Red Cliffs Parkway overlooks the sandstone hills above and the City of St. George below. For the record, Pioneer Park is attached to bike trails that extend the adventure into the city. The first thing I noticed was that the kiosk said Red Cliffs National Recreation Area. There was little attention to the Pioneer Park name. At least in the west parking lot. However there was sufficient attention to the red bluffs. To the right stood Dixie Rock. This sandstone dome is the focal point of the park. Rising above the city below is the red rock that reads Dixie. There was zero need to find directions because right above the parking lot were throngs of climbers. I'd follow the people. I made a right to a gap between the two massive sandstone rocks that form the dome that is Dixie Rock. This brought me to the north side. I followed the people to the carved steps. I scrambled up the few carved steps to the tops. Below me was a breathtaking panorama of St. George. This is a Kodak photo moment. Ahead was a small steel bridge that connected the small gap that I had walked under. This is an even better Kodak photo moment. If I had passed over the scrambling, I would not have lost out if I saw the panorama of St. George from the parking lot. Moments after returning to the west parking lot, I walked along the shadow of Dixie Rock to the larger east parking lot. This connects Pioneer Park to the reserve via T-Bone Trail and the gardens. Without leaving the park proper, this is a red rock playground bordering sandbox topography with additional attractions. There is boy scout cave, a home carved between the red rocks with a roof and chimney. I didn't get to see it. I did get to see the beginning of the slot canyon where a family with children were propelling. I was impressed by what I saw of the one hundreds yard slot canyon that is 1-2 feet deep at its narrowest. Sometimes when my world is one of bills, work, and stress I have to leave it for an out-of-this-world adventure. For a few hours Pioneer Park was an out-of-this-world adventure where I rose above it all in a red rock playground overlooking St. George, Utah. read more

Got there right around sunrise so mouse tank was almost in shade the whole time which was nice. Path is mostly all sand so I kept having to empty my sandals. Beautiful. All the sandstoney goodness of a state or national park in southern Utah without the desolation! In fact, at most times, this 50+ acre park is chock-full of people, many of whom give no outward appearance of having the wherewithal or ability to hike to spots like this... and that's ok. There are several signs that betray the park's proximity to civilization-- power lines, fencing, a covered picnic table area, asphalt roadways and parking areas, and more egregious offenses of humanity like broken glass, some light tagging/name carving in the soft stone, and occasional other trash (there are no trash cans in the park or the restrooms, for that matter) but compared to most SoCal urban and suburban parks, this place is pristine. The kids clambered about on the rocks, enjoyed the view from atop Dixie rock, and we took the opportunity to take some family photos. A great time for all. There are low containment fences to keep desert tortoises inside the park and out of the parking lot, and signs reminding folks not to take them home. Hopefully, people heed this and don't swipe them. In non-winter months, the park also features a population of various other reptiles like Gila monsters, fence lizards, Great Basin Rattlesnakes, and gopher snakes. Yo might also spot a roadrunner, hawk, various songbirds, hummingbirds, or ground squirrels. Not the most natural spot in Southern Utah by any stretch of the imagination, but close enough to town to pique the imagination of the young or the young at heart. read more

What a gem!!! So you are in St. George.... and for whatever reason you cannot ( or don't want) to head out to Zion's or in to the desert for some rock climbing or viewing. This is 2 minutes from the main drag in St. George and seriously a good time for adults AND for kids. Parking is plentiful and you won't need to really move the car to experience it all. Several canyons and formations to climb up, down, over, around, through to see the impressiveness that is the "red rock" of southern Utah. 100% of this place can be done with babies from infancy to husbands (the biggest babies of all). Where they cannot walk, they can be carried and there really are no obstacles too tough. Your littles will get a great sense of accomplishment as they sit in one of the mini arches at the top of the park, looking over the entire valley. There are restrooms on site, don't expect anything too fancy but great for "emergencies." Pack in your own water and if you bring anything, please, PACK IT OUT. The only two downfalls we found here were a-holes that have carved their name in the sandstone (there is quite a bit of it at the top of the formations) and dog poop. Seriously. If you are bringing your dog, pick up after them. This is a must visit for us in St. George. Great way to burn off some energy and see some pretty stuff... all from the comfort of downtown. read more

We come here around sunset because the views are on point during that time of day and the temperatures are not as high. Parking can be a bit crowded, but there are several parking areas so you should be able to find a spot with circling around too many times. read more
