My husband was severely ill, actively vomiting, dehydrated, losing weight rapidly, and clearly in distress. We spent over 8 hours in the waiting room and a total of 13 hours in the ED with very little communication, compassion, or meaningful resolution. What was most upsetting was not just the wait time, but the lack of empathy and attentiveness from staff throughout the experience. At one point, I overheard a nurse openly and loudly sharing negative opinions about patients within earshot of others. It was incredibly unprofessional and disheartening, especially in an environment where people are scared, vulnerable, and seeking help. What stood out the most was that several people in the waiting room showed more concern for my husband's condition than many of the medical professionals caring for him. Complete strangers checked on him, offered kind words, and showed more humanity than what we experienced from parts of the staff. The lack of communication among staff, the apparent neglect, and the absence of urgency for someone clearly struggling was alarming. I understand emergency departments are busy and healthcare workers are under pressure, but basic compassion, communication, and dignity should never be optional in patient care. I rarely leave reviews, but after spending decades in healthcare myself, I felt compelled to speak up. Patients deserve to feel heard, cared for, and treated like human beings, especially during medical emergencies.

I'm sorry I forgot the name of the first medical assistant who helped me with disinfection (wipes to disinfect). She explained what was needed, in what order, offered to help etc while being professional and sincerely friendly. Kyle (Pre-Op I think) introduced himself and kept me smiling and laughing while explaining what was going to happen in what order, and MOST importantly nailing my IV on the first try. Apparently I often have challenging veins and it took three tries for bloodwork a few days earlier so boy did I appreciate him. I feel there were two other wonderful ladies who were involved but I can't recall titles or names . My post anesthesia care unit team were Mat/Rosa/and Amelia. Dr. Bowling was my anesthesiologist - who explained exactly what to expect, in what order it would happen and everyone I interacted with made sure I and hubby understood everything and didn't have any questions. I can't recall who exactly did the nerve blocks name, but I had never had one and she and Kyle told me about it. Dr. Ramji is always professional, friendly and informative taking all the time needed to insure i understand all procedures and yesterday was no different. He met with my husband after surgery to let him know how i was. I wish all Drs were this way. On a scale of 1-10, he and my team yesterday are a 10+. Yet I gave AFC my Visa card because when you are feeling sick, you want to know what's the matter so you can do what is necessary to get well. That's exactly the emotional state they want you in when they charge you four times what their participation in the medical program of your insurance company stipulates. Alert your insurance company, which will work with you to contact AFC's accounting department. Call your Visa or Mastercard and put the amount in dispute. Did I say I went to AFC to get a second opinion? Sunday afternoon, I checked in at the Emergency Department of Bridgeport Hospital, where they told me what I had. Yet, I wanted a second opinion.
