My sister in law booked tour stop tickets for us to do the tour. We were excited because it would…read morelimit the collective driving and parking issues at various stops. Everything is ridiculously vague. The pick up location indicated one area outside the Fairmont Hotel, but there was no signage and a very helpful valet pointed us to the pickup location. We were in place over 10 min early with one person still monitoring the other designated stop just in case, but that didn't mean anything because the "pickup times are approximate." We waited about 25 minutes and figured that the bus running over 15 minutes late seemed a bit extreme, so my SIL called the company. Apparently the bus came and left from who knows where and we never even saw it despite being able to see clearly down five different streets. Our next option was to wait over an hour for the next bus, but the person on the phone couldn't provide the exact bus pick up location, which made waiting pointless if the bus was not going to be at the advertised location. We ended up sightseeing on our own.

Home of August Wilson (mentioned earlier) and where "Fences" was filmed. Made Pittsburgh a real incubator for jazz innovation in the early 20th century. These could easily be added when mentioning the neighborhood while driving by. Would take this tour again for sure. Highly recommended.

This is absolutely a treat for anyone with roots here or a fascination with industry and manufacturing. The highlights: Most tours are guided by former steelworkers and people with a first-hand involvement in the steel industry. You get a great overview of the plant, which was the center of life for this community and the lifeblood of the region for more than a century. Our tour placed a heavy emphasis on the engineering and technology of steelmaking, so if that's your thing, it's Christmas. And it's a minor miracle that these two blast furnaces have been preserved. I would suggest that they augment the tours with photos or videos that might help bring these hulking structures to life a bit more, and maybe insert some specific stories about immigrants and working families, union battles, and other colorful bits about Homestead. Sure, a windfall of donor support and a visitor center would go a long way to improving things on that score, but a little shift in emphasis could be done on a budget. Either way, Rivers of Steel is hugely important for preserving the region's steel heritage, and their efforts to extend that support to the community are vital.

I come from a long line of steelworkers and thought I pretty much knew all there was to know. That was, until the tour. The tour guide was extremely informative. Most of the folks working (volunteering) at Carrie have some connection to the steel industry. In addition to the tour, I have had the privilege of attending events there as well. Yep, they rent out the space. Everything was well put together at the events and having the furances as backdrop took it to the next level. As far as the tours go, I feel so strongly that Pittsburgh natives and tourists alike take one. It's really incredible to learn how much of the country was built because of Carrie.

Parking is plentiful, the history is intriguing, and the art scattered about the property is thoughtful and engaging. If you're lucky, you'll spot some wildlife who inhabit the surrounding area.

Somehow or another I didn't realize you could walk across all to most of the bridges in Pittsburgh. As soon as I found that out, it changed the game. We walked from our downtown hotel, across a bridge to the incline, up the incline, more walking/eating up top, back across to Point State Park before heading back to the hotel. We did this on the day of the concert so it was the perfect way to fill the daytime. Overall, the incline is fun. It's a relic of the past and I think a great asset to the city. At the bottom, there's next to nothing(missed opportunity I think). At the top, you have views, various restaurants, and historical markers. There was a trail of some kind we were on. It had a few historical markers on it and appeared to go on forever. We didn't have time that day to explore a ton but we did check out a portion. I didn't realize the French claimed Pittsburgh for years at one point. They fought off the British, Native Americans and anyone that came along for 5-6 years. The worst thing about it is needing cash to travel but it is a cheap trip. 2.50 each way. That's a steal compared to making it up that hill some other way. If you're in Pittsburgh, I think this goes on the must-list. You should at least check it out once.

Total distance is about a mile, but you do have to go up some stairs and of course across two bridges. The views the entire time are breath taking. The actual incline looks like it hasn't been touched much since it opened in 1877. I love that about it. I had a great time taking a video from the bottom to the top and taking photos along the way. The price is $2.50 one way for adults, and $1.25 one way for kids over 6 years old. The last tram trip is at 12:30am.

The original food tour company in Pittsburgh - they take you on tours with local experts and great connections to the city culture. We were blessed with our tour guide, Karen - who was a culinary instructor and an architecture buff - so our tour of the Strip District was loaded with quips and tips. Rather than just trying the food on a new era self guided tour, you are given the history of the century old establishments, the clever stories that made them what they are, and a personal interaction curated with the owners at a dedicated time. We visited 11 places and ate at 8. Karen said that she'd consider it a win if we ended on time and we ended full. The tour took exactly two hours as advertised and we didn't even need dinner later that night! I grew up in Pittsburgh but I will now cherish so much more of the Strip District - this tour opened my eyes to what so many more places have to offer! Oh....and you get swag!!!
