I come from a long line of steelworkers and thought I pretty much knew all there was to know. That was, until the tour. The tour guide was extremely informative. Most of the folks working (volunteering) at Carrie have some connection to the steel industry. In addition to the tour, I have had the privilege of attending events there as well. Yep, they rent out the space. Everything was well put together at the events and having the furances as backdrop took it to the next level. As far as the tours go, I feel so strongly that Pittsburgh natives and tourists alike take one. It's really incredible to learn how much of the country was built because of Carrie.

Parking is plentiful, the history is intriguing, and the art scattered about the property is thoughtful and engaging. If you're lucky, you'll spot some wildlife who inhabit the surrounding area.

Everything is ridiculously vague. The pick up location indicated one area outside the Fairmont Hotel, but there was no signage and a very helpful valet pointed us to the pickup location. We were in place over 10 min early with one person still monitoring the other designated stop just in case, but that didn't mean anything because the "pickup times are approximate." We waited about 25 minutes and figured that the bus running over 15 minutes late seemed a bit extreme, so my SIL called the company. Apparently the bus came and left from who knows where and we never even saw it despite being able to see clearly down five different streets. Our next option was to wait over an hour for the next bus, but the person on the phone couldn't provide the exact bus pick up location, which made waiting pointless if the bus was not going to be at the advertised location. We ended up sightseeing on our own.

For my dad's birthday, we booked the 8:30 tour on a rainy Friday night. We were excited. The minute I saw that tiki hut slowly sailing (sailing? do they sail if they don't actually have a sail?)...motoring down the river by the Point I KNEW I had to book it. It's BYOB. I guess that might be a downside...the logistics of the evening were certainly complicated by it. What to pack, where to keep it, how to carry it...that kind of stuff. But it also allowed us to pretty much make it whatever we wanted to make it. We chose a tiki-centric theme with straw hats, cigars and mai-tais. There were no regrets. The captains work for tips. They're super friendly, (at least Dale, our Captain...Captain Dale...Jesus, show some respect), flexible and accommodating. We were a bit chilly walking to the mooring (is that what that was? it wasn't really a 'dock', cause it's just tied up by the water steps on the North Shore) in the rain, and I honestly worried I under-dressed in my shorts and Hawaiian shirt, but the river and perhaps the boat itself were warmer than the air around us and even the frailest of flowers in our group doffed their rain coats or jackets once we were under way. It was a very intimate river experience. Did you read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? If you didn't, there's a part in the book where the author talks about the difference between experiencing the road via motorcycle or viewing it from a car. In a car, behind a windshield, it's almost like you're observing your own trip, rather than experiencing it. On a motorcycle, he opined, you feel the wind, the grit, the sun on your face, smell the grass, EXPERIENCE the trip. The Tiki Cruise reminded me of that. The Tiki Cruise was the motorcycle to the Gateway Clipper's car. You're at the water...hell, if you really want, the Captain might even let you take hold of the tiller (is it tiller? wheel? whatever). Leaving at 8:30 we could have (overcast skies did not permit in our circumstance) seen the sun setting behind the cityscape, watched the sky purple into night and the city stir and blossom into twinkling wakefulness. We got all of that but the sunset. The rain stopped almost as soon as we stepped onboard, the Captain informed us it would as he monitored the radar on a phone app. I streamed music over the speakers, we broke out the mai tais and cigars and spent a leisurely two hours taking in the sights and meandering around the boundaries of our vessel, pairing off to talk almost like a floating dinner party. We, all of us, loved it. Yes, it's expensive. But split $400 six ways with some friends, and it's a quite manageable $67. There were hooks under the bar for purses and bags, storage behind the bar for phones or spare coats, ice and a cooler for drinks. I would highly recommend it for a friends' night out, a date, a company team-builder, you name it.

Another fascinating place to learn more about the Homestead Steel Strike of 1892 (which we all learned about in school, although we may have forgotten most of it!), an important event in the history of steel and of labor relations in our country. Unlike the blast furnace tour, this museum is inside, and is self-guided. When we were there, the third floor had a most interesting art exhibit, unrelated to the steel industry. Employees were more than helpful in answering questions; their enthusiasm for the museum was evident!

I was surprised at the cursory mention of the Hill District given the other rich neighborhood histories provided. 3 quick facts that could be added (less than 10 secs) Home of America's first EMT service, "Freedom House", which other cities used as a model. Home of August Wilson (mentioned earlier) and where "Fences" was filmed. Made Pittsburgh a real incubator for jazz innovation in the early 20th century. These could easily be added when mentioning the neighborhood while driving by. Would take this tour again for sure. Highly recommended.

This is a really cool park near Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Target around Upper St. Clair that I…read morelike to stop at whenever I'm in the area. The trail is great for beginners or if you just want a quick jog. There are several benches you can sit down on along the way, plus a tree stump in the woodsy part that you can also sit on to rest. It's a very well maintained trail that smells like freshly cut wood chips, and has a nice variety of terrain. I didn't see any dog poop (it's a no-dog park) and no litter at all, which the multiple trash cans around the loop definitely help with. While a good portion of the trail has the wood chips, some areas could use a bit more. After rain, a few spots can get muddy and it can get a little marshy in the grassy part where there is no trail. The outer loop is about 1.2 miles, and there are several spots where the trail branches off. There's a more "woody" section and a more "grassland" section, which keeps it interesting. It's also not hard to find parking at the church across the street. There's a lot of birds chirping and tons of squirrels and bunnies, and every once in a while you'll spot deer. Inside the barn fence there are lambs and sometimes horses, which is a nice touch. Also kind of cool is that there are wild chive plants around this trail which is common in the Pittsburgh area, and you'll find some growing in the park if you know what to look for.

The old house, and farm are really special, and I am so glad that the Upper St. Clair Historical Society maintains these buildings and property so we can occasionally get to visit and see how things used to be. Today they had all kinds of activities going on, from hayrides, petting zoo, sheep shearing, cow milking, yarn spinning, beekeeping, and of course tours of the historic house, barn and outbuildings, all of which are like a museum. This place was well worth the price of admission . . . FREE, but the suggested donation was $5 per person.

Riding the GAP from the Deal Trailhead to Frostburg and ending in Cumberland was mostly, a great…read moreexperience. The views are spectacular, rolling hills and so many colors of green and blue were breathtaking. Mile 9 was NOT our favorite mile. There is trail maintenance happening and that's a GOOD thing, but...the gravel is thick in many areas so riding the bike was sketchy at best. Thankfully it wasn't much more than that mile. I loved the train track right next to the trail and my prayers were answered when, lo and behold, a train appeared! It was stopped so as to clear a fallen tree but once removed (minutes) they were on their way. The train was filled with people who were happy to see bikers on the trail as we were happy to see, and wave at them. Great trail.

He said come on over, stayed open past time on Thursday 2 SEP to help two random out of town bicyclists. He not only helped but let me in the sacred space in the shop and showed me how to deal with the wheel on my Cannondale Topstone...I was afraid of the disc brakes [had tube, levers and pump], but had not practised removing a wheel or bothered to watch a YouTube video. I had spent 32 glorious miles on the GAP with my wonderful spouse...last 2 walked in cleats! Painful lesson on preparing ahead of time...so embarressed and me a boy scout and Army Vet. Thank you Hutch for your service in our brother USAF! Blessings always. I am sure this would be our go-to place if we lived anywhere within an hour...would be totally worth the drive.

The atmosphere of the tour was light and fun. The tour guide was full of (dad) jokes as their website promised.
