I was back home here in Pittsfield when what we thought was a little water in the ear turned out to be a very painful infection. I called every vet in the area and no one could see him until mid July or August! I explained the severity of the situation. One vet hospital (that will not be named) said they couldn't help unless I paid - from what I understood- $200 just to walk through the door in addition to the exam, testing and meds. They suggested I try other area vets or drive to Deerfield. I was a Mess and Chuck was in pain. Then I called Pittsfield Vet hospital. Thank you Stephanie and for suggesting standby and Dr. Joseph Devereaux for seeing and treating my little Chuckie-dog with such kindness when everyone else refused to help us. He almost immediately appeared to feel relief yesterday and today he is almost back to himself . You are the best and I can't tell you how grateful I am. Thank you All so much! read more

really awful bedside manor from the drs themselves, specifically dr maddy and dr looney. shady place, wish I never took my pets here. corporate owned, go figure. unfortunately i didnt know until it was too late. cannot warn you enough, do not take your pets here. the staff at front of house are lovely. the techs were okay for the most part. BUT the business itself and way that the vets behave is abysmal. they will mishandle your animals and then blame you/give you awful misguided "advice" for their own liability reasons. hope this helps others avoid what we had to go through. nobody deserves to be treated that way whether human or animal. read more

My dog was quilled by a porcupine on a trail run just down the road. I just loaded him in the car and rushed over. I didn't even bother to call in advance. Not only were they able to get him in immediately, but the charges were reasonable (for good vet care). Since he was under anesthesia, they clipped his toenails at no charge. The doctor for my cat is the best! I would give her 5 stars. Every time I call it's the one person who answers the phone is a bit rude. I called and she kept cutting me off blaming another service for sending documents. The other business has responded they have been sending documents. I tried to let her know the issue was already ongoing and I needed a follow up if they responded. She kept cutting me off and didn't give me a chance to explain my issue. They don't like to take any fault or apologize for an issue on their behalf. I was a bit disappointed. It could have been that individual but her actions reflect the establishment. read more

I came here today for an emergency visit with my rat. From the moment I called them on the phone they were nothing short of amazing. I drove over an hour and they were the only ones able to see my boy Memphis on a Sunday. They got me in very quickly and the assistant, technician, and doctor were extremely knowledgeable and made me feel comfort during a really hard time. I will not bring my cat here again. The doctor gave her the wrong rabies vaccine. I am cautious about vaccines. They aren't necessary for an indoor cat (the chances of her biting a rabid bat or mouse in our dwelling are extremely low), but the management of an apartment I will be moving into requires the vaccine. Erring on the side of caution, I had asked for the one-year "Purevax" vaccine that was developed in response to a high proportion of cats getting cancerous tumors from the regular 3-year vaccine (the tumor grows in the spot where the injection was administered on the pet's body). I had asked for this newer vaccine TWICE: when I made the appointment on the phone and again when I spoke to the assistant when I arrived. The assistant "misunderstood" me, and they are "sorry" and the doctor kept repeating that I can get her the Purevax one in three years when she is due again. What? Is this supposed to distract me from the fact that you just injected my cat with the wrong one? I am irate. I asked for a hard copy statement from the doctor recording that they made this "mistake" and she acted like I was putting her out: "Well, I don't do my write-ups until later. I don't do them right away." "Okay, I'll wait," I said. The woman at the desk then asked her if she should not charge me for the vaccine and the doctor walked away in a huff and said "I don't know. I don't care." Ah, the same approach you and your staff had when you carelessly gave my cat the toxic vaccine that I did not ask for. Now you are not only sloppy, but rude as well. I think a written admission was not much to ask, as the cursory apologies from her and the staff weren't sufficient. Part of my motivation in writing this review was their behavior, which was designed to make me feel in the wrong for being angry. I have found a vet that truly cares for exotic animals. My husband and I recently adopted a sun conure and we made an appointment with Dr. Devereaux. He was very knowledgeable and compassionate with our bird and helped to alleviate any worries we had regarding an illness with our bird. I would highly recommend this vet to those who have exotic pets. Dr. Devereaux also texted our daughters mice and he was just as compassionate and knowledgeable about their care. read more

Poor staff relations Tristen in particular. My dog needs medication, it was supposed to be filled at a pharmacy the night before, it wasn't. I went to the pharmacy they had no records of the script, I called the vet and was told, I could have a paper prescription by the time I got there. It wasn't ready as promised but was told the pharmacy did call for their DEA#. They told me I could wait for a paper script, I saw no purpose in waiting any longer so off to the pharmacy I go again. The pharmacy didn't have the right dosage, so I call the vet and Tristan told me it was my fault I didn't wait for the prescription but what was the point if they told me the pharmacy had it. So now Tristan tells me I have to wait another hour to punish me. Her tone was unprofessional, unpleasant and rude and she had no compassion for what I had been through trying to get medication for my pet. I asked her on two different occasions to send me his paperwork from his last visit and it still has not been sent. I guess I'm being punished for that too. read more

My two cats and dog are patients here, and I currently use the practice for emergency service. Overall I've been reasonably satisfied. Dr. Reynolds is fantastic, and the two other vets we've seen are also great. Their prices are reasonable, in my opinion. My one major issue with them is that one of my cats is difficult in the office, and they are very hesitant to deal with him. One of the vet techs, especially, seemed rather inexperienced, and was afraid to try to handle him, even with the cat gloves on. They have sometimes not been able to carry out procedures, and push for sedation without first attempting a procedure without it. For this reason I switched to a different primary vet, who is skilled and confident enough to give him shots and such without sedating. read more

I've been in the area for a year and have been very happy with Pittsfield Vet. Tonight they went above and beyond. My pup was stung by a bee and my anxiety was pretty high. His face was swollen and he was pretty agitated. I called the vet hoping to get an emergency number to call. Instead, I got a live person who asked me a few questions and then connected me with a vet. The vet asked some questions and suggested Benadryl. I asked a bunch of questions and was kind of panicky but she calmed me down and offered to meet me at the office if it would make me feel better. It was great to have someone I trusted not pressure me to come in (or try to dissuade me from coming in) He's now resting and the swelling is way down. I'm super grateful for the advice but more importantly, I felt listened to and she didn't make me feel crazy. read more

I love this place! It's very clean, the front desk staff is friendly and fun, and the doctors are great! I've had many pets through there. My first lab as he was getting older had worn away most of his ligaments in his back legs. He was 11, pretty old for a lab. Dr. Reynolds gave me 3 choices- 2 types of surgery (different prices and solutions) or an ibuprofen regimen. As old as my boy was, I didn't want to put him through a long recovery in the last part of his life. Dr. Reynolds assured me I wasn't a bad pet owner for not doing surgery. It wasn't pushed on me, and I am forever impressed. My dog had to be put down a few months later from other old age complications, and again, everyone was wonderful, staying after hours and even crying with us. I run a dog business and in the course of seven years have had dog emergencies, and anytime we have brought a dog to them they have handled every situation, even saving a dog's life who may have been poisoned in the woods. As a pet owner, and a pet business owner, I trust these people with my and my customers furry family members. Whenever I went there, I never felt that my cats had the best care. Oftentimes, there were no call backs and poor followups. There was rude behavior by both doctors and staff. Moving to the area, I was very concerned about my 5 cats' care during the move. Called PVH/Shaker to ask about boarding my 5 cats for 3-4 days. The person I spoke to got very rude about my one cat who is FIV+ (not airborne, not contagious, he is a very quiet, gentle cat) and insisted they would have to charge me more to quarantine him. She reported that she'd have to "get back to me" after consulting a vet about boarding the FIV+, and went on with a lot of fallacies about the condition, obviously she knew nothing. At any rate, they never called back and i found a wonderful, compassionate facility in NY. Needless to say, I will never call them now that we're all settled in. p.s. Update: found a wonderful vet in the area, and we've had a number of visits/procedures. NEVER at Pittvet. read more

I don't give 5 stars easily but this is very deserved. Dr Reynolds at the PVH was outstanding with our cat, who developed a large abscess on his throat over the weekend when most vets are closed. We showed up without reservation. He quickly and calmly, administered antibiotics, drained the abscess, cleaned up our baby and gave great follow up directions. Smokey is doing wonderfully and Dr. Reynolds followed up with a phone call to make sure all was well. Doesn't get better. Thank you! read more

I would not recommend Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital or Shaker Hill Pet Resort in Pittsfield, MA based on my first hand experience. There are two issues of concern. First off, the estimates for animal care do not match the final billed amount. No further explanation is needed; the estimate for service should match the final bill. Secondly (and of much greater concern), this practice appeared to employ a very deliberate and systematic technique where they over treat the animal. And while over treating your animal may sound desirable, this has an effect of churning up the costs of the bill for services rendered. In every (billable or otherwise) instance, the Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital performed the most expensive billable procedure, dispensed the most expensive drugs, and employ or followed the most financially demanding protocol in treating my animal. The end result is that Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital sets new highs in costs for providing care for your animal. read more

I have been a customer of Pittsfield animal hospital for 4 years. I had two dogs that were patients there. I have been hearing of negative experiences that my friends have had there in regard to the emergency services that they offer. I myself did not have any complains (other than their high prices for care) until the other night when my dogs got into a fight and my one dog was in need of stitches at 11:30 pm. I called and was referred to an emergency clinic in Latham which is a hike for us. When I asked why my dog couldn't be treated there the receptionist told me that it was because the vet just left the building and that she had an 8 am shift. The vet receptionist said that the vet said my dog could wait till the morning and that it didn't sound that serious. I assured the receptionist that she definatly needed ton be seen right then and she said that there was nothing she could do. I ended up taking her to the Latham emergency vet and she needed stitches inside and outside the wound. The vet who didn't want to come in to treat her claimed that she wasn't told the severity of the laceration by their receptionist (who was rude and not understanding of my situation on the phone) . The vet also stated that they sent out notices last year that they are not an ER for animals anymore. I never got a notice in the mail but my boss did who's animals are also patients there and she said the notice stated that they are not an ER for animals that are NOT patients at their clinic. Whatever the case, my dog needed emergency care and was refused by her emergency vet :( I use them as a vet and pay in my opinion inflated costs for the peace of mind that in an emergency my dogs can be seen by their normal vet who has all of their health history on hand. I am switching to East Greenbush Animal Hospital for all their care now. I have seen them before for boarding and they are always very friendly and they charge nothing near what Pittsfield charges. I actually feel that the vets there give superior care in the few instances we have seen them. I feel that when you see a provider with a shiny new building that you can be assured that you are paying for that pretty waiting room lol. read more
