We knew a parent when my child was in preschool who worked at Pixar Studios in Emeryville. Inorder to get a tour you must know someone or have a connection. It was a lot of fun. We were greeted by the employee at the front and he told us stories and showed us the incredible art work from movies like Lightyear and Toystory. At the end we got to shop and eat in their full cafe. It was a calm and fun tour. If anyone from Pixar sees this, my daughter's school is fundraising and we would love another donation of a tour. read more

Visiting Pixar Studios this past June was seriously a bucket list moment for Christopher and me! From the moment we walked onto the campus, it felt like we were stepping into a world where creativity and imagination run wild. Huge shoutout to our amazing host, Natalie Lyon, for making the experience extra special. She was so warm and welcoming, and it was awesome to see the place through the eyes of someone who clearly loves what she does. We geeked out over the iconic Luxo Jr. lamp and ball, wandered through inspiring spaces filled with artwork and storyboards, and got a behind-the-scenes look at the kind of storytelling magic that has shaped so many of our favorite films. Also--note to future visitors: the merch store is dangerously good. We didn't leave empty-handed. If you ever get the chance to visit Pixar, go! It's pure magic, and it made us feel like wide-eyed kids all over again. read more

Really reasonable prices. Art books, plushies, merch - it's a small shop but well stocked. Got some t-shirts, red panda plush, the art of books for Turning Red, Soul, and color scripts. If you have the luxury of visiting - DO IT. Unlike other big film studios, you actually have to know someone to get into this one. I was fortunate enough to have a co-worker whose husband has worked at Pixar for a number of years and was absolutely thrilled when they invited me for a tour. Once there, you are greeted by life-size figures of your favorite Pixar characters and their gift shop (I went home with a cute magnet). They took me around the gallery, which featured behind the scenes art and videos for their recent films, Coco and the Incredibles 2. I was in absolute awe. The amount of work that goes into each film can not be understated. I also has the pleasure of seeing the offices of many of their employees, which are far from boring. Each employee had a whole theme to their office - what a place to work! We capped the tour off at their cafe, which provided a delicious and diverse lunch. I was lucky enough to go to Pixar back in June of 2013 for a vendor screening of Monsters University. We were in the Steve Jobs building, so I got to see a lot of their life size figures: Sully & Mike, Cars, Woody and Buzz from Toy story and The Incredibles. They also have their trophies on display in a trophy case, so that was neat to see as well. If you're ever lucky enough to go to this building, make sure to go upstairs to look at all the sketches. This past Monday, November 23rd, it was time to see The Good Dinosaur. This time they had the screening in the Brooklyn building. I didn't notice if the Monsters University gate was still up, but make sure to stop by for a photo op in front of the Pixar lamp and Ball. Since it's the 20th anniversary of Toy Story, they had a lot of Toy Story sketches displayed. Looking at the early sketches of all these wonderful Pixar films is probably my favorite part of being on the Pixar campus. I love seeing how the characters changed and developed before making it to film. It's always so much fun watching a film at the Pixar campus. Til the next one! read more

This place was as magical as Disneyland LOL Guests/visitors are only permitted with an employee/intern so I was super lucky to have been invited by my friend. Due to the recent release of Finding Dory, the office spaces were illustrating the works of how they made the movie etc. it was super cool to see the original concept art designs that made it onto the big screen. Pixar has many regulations again photos since productions are always going on. Make sure you always ask if you can take a photo of this or that. Always be respective of the place you are in! I viewed the Pixar visit as more of a museum and I even got to see some editors at work! Super cool and I got to eat lunch with my friend. Food here is great and plenty of healthy options. I liked the combo plate where you can choose a protein and 2 sides for only $8. The gift shop was also cool and they employees even allowed my brother to take a shirt to the bathroom to try it on (since there was no fitting room). Super lax right?! Good thing I knew someone at Pixar, because my friend took me on a fun tour inside Pixar Studios! Parking was easy - pull up to the kiosk, let them know who you are visiting, and in you go! There is a specific visitor parking section. :) You can take pictures inside; just not some of the hallways where it's clearly marked with "no photographs". I saw some of my favorite characters and movies - The Incredibles, Monsters, Inc. and more! The famous lamp and ball was right outside of the Steve Jobs Building - best to take a picture with that! I can't believe this campus as its own pool and basketball court / volleyball court. Incredible. :) It's almost like having their own gym on site. The lunch options are also subsidized for employees and guests. While I didn't have lunch on campus, I really enjoyed seeing the open-ness and the hustle/bustle of the people waiting in line and "spontaneously" meeting each other / chatting with each other while you're in the large atrium area. VERY COOL. I think the employees are all getting ready for the next movie to launch in 2015...with "The Good Dinosaur". This campus and buildings were so smartly designed by Jobs and for public touring that it was such a pleasure to visit! I spent one hour getting a tour from a personal friend and then eating lunch afterward as well. They have a gift shop too! Loved seeing the cereal bar, mail room, upper display galleries, all 3 buildings, animation theatre, and walking by the gym/pool. So many cute statues and things on display. The daycare center is off campus down the street. Toy Story 4 full color story boards were on display but I chose to NOT look at them because they had spoilers in them. Lunch options were plenty, affordable, quick, delicious, and they had a very open cafeteria. So much greenery, empty space, and such a relaxed, serene vibe. Such a good culture there. So glad I got to go. I heard a lot of cool stories and learned about what my friend worked on and some celeb stories too. :) If you get a chance, definitely visit. read more

Pixar Studios is really sacred ground for all things involving animation and innovation. Luckily for me, a friend of mine brought me in as a guest to a special advanced screening for The Good Dinosaur at Pixar's Presto Theater on the studio grounds. I definitely couldn't pass up the opportunity especially since Pixar doesn't do public studio tours. The studio grounds is pretty cool and you can spot nods to some of their famous movies like one of the "Mine!" seagulls from Finding Nemo on top of the Brooklyn Building (http://bit.ly/1jprbBL) and the Cars 2 logo right on the driveway when you enter the through the front gate. You definitely won't miss the famous Pixar Lamp and Ball which is pretty awesome (http://bit.ly/1NhCb09). And yes the Lamp does turn on at night (http://bit.ly/1TdRuHj). The Presto Theater, which is located inside the Brooklyn Building, is a small theater that seats about 60-70 people but it's really state-of-the-art as expected. And the sound system is badass!! The Good Dinosaur looked crystal clear and sounded amazing in there! Before the movie, they had a reception with very nice spread of food (pulled pork bbq sliders, flatbread pizzas, avocado toast, crudite, Rice Krispies treats, fruit, and brownies) and drinks (wine and beer). The only thing that bummed me out was that I couldn't take any pictures inside the building. There were some really awesome galleries in there. The current theme is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Toy Story so there lots of hand drawn early concept pictures of Buzz and Woody and all the other characters. When you enter the building there's a huge picture of the backs of woody and buzz with woody placing his hand on buzz's shoulder. Another big hand drawn pic of woody and buzz riding and RC car. My descriptions really don't do them justice. You really had to be there to see all the awesomeness! All I can say is that it was a really overwhelming experience for me being able to see a Pixar film on the grounds where it was created. What's 'Up"? One of the sweetest movies that I can remember. When we were kids, the standards were Hanna Barbara (Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Penelope Pitstop, etc.), Scooby Doo, and Speed Racer. Pixar has pushed the bar literally out-of-sight. With their series of hits, "Up" really hit my high note with its very human story. Also, who else could bring back 3-D glasses to the movie theaters? The last time that I wore them was to watch Captain Eo in Disneyland, another great memory of Michael with Anjelica Huston. This is definitely a movie that you must watch on the big screen. I don't see how the DVD will do it justice. I'm just glad that Disney didn't commercialize everything into fast foods like they normally do when they bought Pixar. read more

What's not to love about PIXAR?!?! As a kid at heart, I absolutely ADORE and am obsessed with Pixar films. What amazed me more was when I found that the company is headquartered right in Emeryville. I remember driving by once years ago & saw the huge Pixar sign at the gate in awe. I started daydreaming about the day I'll get to go inside. My dream FINALLY became a reality a few months ago. A good friend of mine was working there & extended a last minute invite to me to a friends & family advance screening of The Good Dinosaur. Even though it was very last minute & on a weeknight - it was too awesome to pass up. I just had to find a way to go! It was a fun experience & I felt super important being in their screening room hahah. The Steve Jobs building is huge & very well set up (high ceilings, lots of windows...reminds me of Apple HQ actually) Our group grabbed a quick bite at the cafe before the movie. Afterwards, we stopped in the gift shop so I could pick up some Pixar swag. The merchandise selection changes depending on what movie(s) they are currently promoting. It's a tiny shop but still a lot of fun. I really enjoyed seeing the display case full of brag worthy Oscars & recognitions. They'll probably need a bigger one soon! There are also a few photo ops (Lego Woody & Buzz are there to greet you by the sign in desk) with various Pixar statues. I got a pic with Bing Bong - he's so freaking cute OMG. The upstairs has a small museum (that changes as well) too that you can spend some time to tour - I got to see Inside Out & Good Dinosaur stuff. ABSOLUTELY no pics though - only mental ones :D I got an opportunity to return for a 2nd visit during the day for lunch & visited a different building where they happen to have the 20 year anniversary of Toy Story stuff on display. Toy Story is one of my favorite Pixar films so that was a really nice treat. Even though I took limited pictures during my visits, the experience will forever be embedded in my memory. I am so grateful to my friend - I paid for lunch that day but felt it wasn't even big enough of a thank you hahah! I also got to shake the hand of a Pixar director because we saw him in passing and my friend introduced us. If there was a six star rating on yelp.. This place would more than deserve it. It is one of the most amazing place any person can visiting. This is where imagination, creativity, childhood dreams, reality and lots of fun get thrown into a blender and mixed altogether!! I had the opportunity, no, the privilege to to visit their studio for a private tour. We were there for the 'UP' exhibition. It was the first time the exhibition was in town and the first time being shown in the Pixar studio.. Ironic.. Since all of the art pieces originated here. The experience was just mind blowing from beginning to end. When you first drive up, you have to get your guest pass with your name pre-printed on it. In case you don't know, the studio can only be visited by invitation only. When you approach the building for the first time, you will recognize a couple well known symbols outside the building. =) After admiring the decorating for awhile, I made my way into the building. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by a couple of familiar faces from Monster Inc, Cars and Toy Story. You can hardly call this place a place of work. Sadly its complete contrast to where I work at. During my visit, I was able to see a special sneak peek of Toy Story 3, looked at hundreds of art pieces from the movie UP. Also spoke to many of the creators of the movie about behind the scene stuff. The evening was topped off with a visit to the gift shop. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Everything was unique in the sense that you can only purchase it here in Pixar. Since I don't know when I will get a chance to come back again, I brought everything from clothes to glasses, to books and whatever else that was out on display. I also wrapped up my visit with a couple of photos with some of the characters. It was one amazing night. I would pay just to come back again. Update: I appreciate many of you readers asking me for a tour...unfortunately, I am unable to get you in! But you should visit anyways, the grand Pixar sign at the front gate is an amazing photo opportunity in itself! I often just drive my friends past the Pixar studios for this photo opp! --- I've visited many corporations in the Bay Area (and elsewhere) now and until I met Pixar, Google was always at the top of my list. Sorry Google, you are no longer the coolest campus. I wasn't expecting much going in. I drove through the gates under the huge PIXAR metal sign, gave my ID and visit time to the security guard, who then printed out a badge for me and told me where guest parking was. The building is an unassuming brick building that matches the rest of Emeryville well. It looks industrial with its glass, steel, and brick, but not scary or unclean. In fact, it's very clean, and the campus in general is large, quiet, and peaceful. The Luxo Jr. lamp sits right in front of the main building. Outside there is a soccer field, a basketball court, a swimming pool (possibly not Olympic sized, but it's a full size and much larger than Google's!), and a beach volleyball court...all lined with many beautiful and full palm trees. The main building has a large atrium in the middle, with a gift shop and cereal bar on one side and the cafeteria on the other side, and the main theater straight through at the end. The offices are on either side of the building, and the open second floor is connected by a bridge. There are fully stocked kitchens throughout the building. They're different colors, but one of them uses the same standing tables as the Apple Retail stores. ;) The kitchens mostly have beautiful stainless steel appliances. You can tell quality design is in the DNA of Pixar (and Apple). Even the bathrooms at Pixar are beautiful. I like that the male/female designation panels on the bathroom doors are of the Incredibles characters. :) If you've read the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson, you'll know the story behind the Pixar building, and why it has a huge space in the middle intended to allow spontaneous meetings and conversations (and therefore, innovation and creativity) between employees. There are also secret rooms. :) Speaking of Apple, there are Apple cinema display monitors on the walls throughout the building that display things such as how a story is created and the process it goes through. It was cool watching a movie clip in 2D/cartoon mode, and comparing that with the final product you see in the theaters. Pixar is the best because not only do they create a fun and beautiful working environment, they have a lot of artists, designers, photographers, and other creative people that work here. The halls are lined with photographs and paintings and panels either from Pixar movies or employees' personal collections. It's almost like visiting a museum, but a really cool one. They also have statues of characters from Pixar movies, such as the Incredibles family, the monsters from Monsters, Inc, Finding Nemo, and more. My favorite display was the Cars 2 screen paintings. Those were amazing. They frequently hold movie screenings, not just of their own movies, but others too. They have a new building which is superbly designed and built, with 2 theaters in it and a spiral staircase. Oh yeah! The food at the cafeteria! You have to pay for it (subsidized prices), so in that respect it's not as amazing as Google. Everywhere else at Pixar though, food is free, like in the kitchens, the cereal bar. I ordered a pasta dish here, and it's quite customizable. It was also very delicious. Sigh...I wish I had some skill that would be useful to work as an employee at Pixar. Took the family to meet a friend that works at Pixar for a tour. It's not open to the public, you have to know someone that works there to give you the tour. Let me just say that is hard to come back today to my boring day job after a day at Pixar. Let me note too that for the years that I have known my friend, and who offered to take us on the tour (I didn't know it was a big deal until now), I had no idea what other films Pixar was responsible for past Toy Story. I know this is extremely embarrassing as I was scolded by my 6 year daughter for not knowing what the movie Brave was about. This was by the way, the decorations in the Steve Jobs Building. After checking in with security, you meet in the main lobby by a receptionist and Woody and Buzz Lightyear (my twins loved this!). The architecture of the building is absolutely beautiful. Lots of windows and light streaming in. We spent about 20 minutes near the reception taking pictures (couldn't get past this area!). Here is where the the Oscar awards are displayed, the Luxo cafe, and the Pixar merchandise store is located. Also, a Bo Peep figure to denote a ladies room, the men's is denoted by Woody! Genius! Also, thank you for the changing table in the ladies room. (Twins - you can't go anywhere without a blow out! Geez). On with our escorted tour, lots to see on how a motion picture is born from a scratch pad idea to the details of the muscle movement of the characters. So much involved! There were lots of areas where we were not allowed, and no picture taking either. :( We were there on a holiday but Pixar was still open and people still working away. There were meetings, and other things going on. It was soooo cool almost like a museum. So much to see, read, and touch. The Luxo cafe, and screening rooms, located in the middle, and was thought of to bring people out of their offices and brainstorm, etc. The food, however, is not free, but not overly expensive either. There are kitchens throughout where the you help yourself to coffee, juice, cereal, etc. and that is free. Outside we saw the soccer area, the lap pool, the gym, full basketball court, BBQ area (surrounded by palm trees). Wow, so overwhelming how people actually work in a place like this! But my friend assured me that like any other work place they have deadlines too, so that said, you get work done, you play hard. I plan on coming back to Pixar when their next movie comes out. The process of tracking down a tour guide was probably my biggest goal of the summer. I sent endless emails pleading with my friends to put me in touch with their former high school sweetheart or sewing class buddy. Alas! I found a tour guide after about 2 months of asking around. Once you get into the gate, it's a dream come true. Surrounding the buildings are beautiful lush landscaping, neat statues from movies like Finding Nemo, and lots of sidewalks. It feels like a mini college campus. I was given an hour long tour around the grounds and inside the Steve Jobs building. Within the building, there were character statues/displays from multiple Pixar movies. My tour guide encouraged photo ops with the displays. Lining the halls and walls, I was fascinated with the models/sculptures, detailed art, and drawings. Much of the art was museum-worthy. Some of the art pieces were modern takes on the former Pixar movies. I loved every bit of it! Following the tour, I was allowed to join Pixar employees in the cafeteria. Several gourmet options, including salads, burritos, pizza, and more. After lunch, I spent about $80 on hard-to-get Pixar gear in their little gift shop. I highly encourage you to find a tour guide to take you through the campus, if you're ever near/visiting San Francisco. read more

Amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing!!! Came here for a private screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I am a Disney/Pixar freak so of course upon arriving here, I was having a mini heart attack in the car. You are greeted at the gate with a gate-keeper who checks your ID to make sure you are on the guest list - it makes you feel SO exclusive!! After a quick park, we walked towards the main building and were greeted by none other than the lightbulb and bouncy ball. SO BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING IN ALL ITS GLORY!!! The building itself is MAGNIFICENT!!! Its a brick building lined with glass/windows and it is line with hardwood..gorgeous!!! Walk in and you are greeted by Buzz&Woody, Mike&Sulley, and a bunch of other Pixar characters. A case of all the awards Pixar won is to your right, and I swear it took all the fibers in my being to NOT freak out and take one. The movie theater is SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Red velvet everywhere and big comfy seats. When the lights go off, look up and you will see stars!!!!! I'm also not sure if its just me or what, but the 3D effects in the movie seemed so much better than in regular theaters. The only thing I wish is that the gift shop was opened later for people like me who planned on spending my life savings at the store. Better luck next time!! What negative thing can I possibly say about Pixar? First, they make amazing movies with fantastic animation and stories. But Pixar is also an amazing place to visit. They place a high value on presenting themselves well. For example, each employee is sent a file, telling them how to show visitors around the complex. They always have a tour set up, about the most recent movie. Things from story boards, sketches, clay models, human-scale statues and random toys -- they are all around the building! Somehow I convinced one of my few non-mother related friends to let me in for the 3rd annual pixarapalooza and boy did I disappoint mother with all my shenanigans let me tell you! They had all sorts of exotic foods like 'nachos,' "hot dogs," and 'beer.' I have never seen so many things from tv and magazines in my life. Pixar must be made of money, or have a money orchard in their backyard at the very least. Anywho, I ate till my potato sack pants barely fit and I had to fart like I'd been holding it for hours. I also drank 'beer' and let me tell you, it must have been expired because boy oh boy I couldn't see straight for hours. The buildings are full of artwork from their films and everyone is super cool, in a "I used to be a weirdo in high school but now I'm frickin amazing" sort of way. Take that high school losers! I played ping pong, laid on their grass and listened to their musicians play their hits. Maybe when mother "kicks the bucket" (mother doesn't understand "jive talk") I'll have enough hopes and dreams enough to work here. Mother says hush up and finish her sponge bath. tasty food from the cafe like the fresh pasta dishes and the artisan pizzas. neat stuffed animals like the strawberry scented Latso bear from Toy Story 3. his stomach area REALLY DOES smell like strawberries! and of course the incredibly talented Pixar people all around you. it's nice to have them as a client, so i get to visit this place on a regular basis. read more

Pixar, started as a little animation studio that Mr. Jobs bought from Mr. Lucas. They released a little movie called "Toy Story". Since then, they have heavily influenced the way movies are made in all genres. Also, they happen to be one of the most successful movie studios of all time. They entered into an industry which is vitually impenetrable. I love almost all of their movies. They've put the smack down on an entire industry. Disney is their bitch. Never in a zillion years would I ever imagine giving Pixar anything less than five stars. However, after tonight, I grant a solid four. Here's why: Seriously, how are you gonna charge an extra $3.00 for 3-D glasses AND tell us to dump them in the recycle bin after . But then proceed to show us previews for three upcoming Pixar / Disney movies that will be ALSO be in 3-D. So, I predict you are gonna charge us again and again and again? Me thinks not. Blah!!! You wouldn't first think about Pixar as a place to rate on yelp. But here I am doing just that. I've been to Pixar a few time on different occasions for movies and just to talk with friends that work there. This review is about the first time I went because I also ate the food from the cafe that is located inside the wonderful place that is Pixar. There were prefixed meals and the choices were amazing! I had the seared Ahi Tuna with mixed veggies and such. Yums! Well I don't know what much more to say but if you ever manage to get into Pixar for a tour or even a job try the food. I didn't give it 5 stars because I'm not rating the movies (which would get 7 stars) I'm rating the food. read more

Does it get any better than this? Pixar is such an amazing campus and so much fun. I have come here a few times and each time I come they always update the lobby with their latest movie release. It's so cool! I came here for an Animation Panel for Monster's University and the gates in the front are exactly like the movie! If you're lucky enough to know somebody who is an employee at Pixar, or lucky enough to know somebody who knows somebody, then definitely take a trip out to Pixar in Emeryville. Oh what a wonderful day it is when you're on the premises of Pixar. I made it past the gates for once and got a tour with two of my friends. I felt so special. They knew I was coming and it was as if they rolled out the red carpet. Everything was so impressive. The tree lined path was more beautiful than anything upstate during the fall. There was a whole group playing soccer on the green and inside it wasn't uncommon to see people whizzing by on scooters or skate boards. The cafeteria is gourmet. They have a new head chef and my brick oven pizza was better than anything you can get at a CPK or Lombardi's. It had a whole wheat crust, was thin, and topped with big pieces of chorizo, red peppers, potatoes, and just the right amount of cheese. Seriously, the pizza here is enough to feed three people and it is only $5! Also, the soda is free. The front lobby and outside is sprinkled with Pixar lifesize characters from Mike and Sully to Wall E and the Luxo lamp. The viewing area to the public is limited but it's still a real treat to see actual artwork and learn about the whole Pixar creative process. I envy the people here who have their own offices. It's like having an apartment and being able to show off your creative style. It's amazing. I can't even write down words and describe what I saw today. I signed some confidentiality agreement. Woooooo!!!! Got to go in a second time!!! Still great and the Brave additions were really nice especially the tapestry. Remember that from the movie? Yeah, they have a big-ass version of it. The Brooklyn Building, which I didn't get to go in last year, was also quite nice and surprisingly homely. I expected it to be nice but it was quite warm and comforting like someone's home. Only problem there was the guests weren't allowed to explore as much as you could at the Steve Jobs Building. read more
