Not wanting to spend an excessive amount of time, I peeked around the corner and observed two open seats at the small bar, so we took them instead. We had to move a dirty plate and glass over to the end of the bar. After about six minutes of sitting there with no bartender appearing we decided to just get a drink, and go elsewhere later for food. Finally a gal approached us, and it seemed that she was the only staff member on duty for both dining rooms and the bar. She was nice enough, but it was disappointing that she couldn't have just removed the dirty dishes which were six inches from my husband's elbow, not to mention the bar wasn't wiped down. The dishes were still there when we left. We caught her passing through after a while to ask for the tab, which was $7.77. My husband put down a $20 bill and she brought back $12.00. Now I realize some places are in a state of panic hysteria over "penny shortages" but you don't just round UP a guest's tab and certainly not by almost a quarter. Some places give you a discount for cash; this one penalizes you. The decor is nice, rustic and countrified. I don't know how the food is obviously. As we were leaving I noticed the front dining room tables still hadn't been cleared and we were there about 20 minutes.

I just drove all the way down here from Michigan because my wife grew up in Iowa and has been craving them for a very long time. This was our first time to try one outside of Iowa but it was very much worth the drive if for no reason other than seeing her smile. Is it the same as what she grew up with? No. Was it good? We each got two sandwiches and after finishing we got right back in line for the drive thru and each got two more. And Maid-Rite meant literally nothing to me before we got here but we are already talking about coming back again. Why? Because it was good! But my wife would say that people who love this location should go visit an Iowa location because they're just as famous for their onion rings and fries as their sandwiches.

Only items holding back from a 5th star in my rating are that their prices seem high for burgers and the occasional issue with their H&C system. The air from their ventilation has generally not been an issue at most of the tables we have been seated at, although they have not fixed it for the tables north of the bar near their stage. So if you would prefer to not have dry-eyes, avoid the couple of tables near the stage (which also would avoid the constant line of traffic of servers navigating to/from the kitchen).
