We ventured to New Castle, Indiana for lunch, trying a newer brewhouse, Ink & Ale. I opted for a draft beer, and the Courier Burger with fries. My plus 1 selected the Mac N Cheese and Fries. Both meals were perfectly prepared and tasted delicious. Best of all was our server Krista! She was timely and so polite, everything you admire from the best of servers. I love an affordable quick lunch during the work week. They have a separate menu where you can either get soup and salad or get a wrap and a soup or salad. I opted for a hearty beef, vegetable stew, and a chicken bacon ranch wrap. Both were excellent filling and extremely affordable. Good solid choice for lunchtime versus fast food. read more

This is a cool little hidden gem in downtown New Castle! The building is an old news paper printing building converted but also has a tribute to the history of the building. The owners did a nice job with the menu and decor, they have a dining area, bar area, lounge area and even a gold simulator and axe throwing area! The food was decent, we had the Lava burger and Fancy BLT. The Lava burger is a cool concept with the cheese on top, but was expecting more heat with a name like Lava. The BLT was a bit underwhelming, I liked the toppings and including the jam, but I do prefer my BLT on sourdough bread. The service was great and everyone was friendly. We started with the pretzel bites and beer cheese appetizer. The cheese had a great flavor, but unfortunately, the pretzel bites were disappointing. They seemed microwaved, which left them soggy and more bread-like than pretzel-like. For entrées, I ordered the Daily Indulgence Burger (a double patty with bacon and mac & cheese). The burger was quite bland, and the mac & cheese component, instead of enhancing the dish, actually detracted from it, reminding me of cafeteria-style food. My wife tried the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and found the chicken to be stringy, thin, and lacking in flavor--something she felt could easily be made better at home. While the food did not meet our expectations, we truly appreciated the attentive and friendly GM, who checked on us multiple times. The atmosphere and overall look of the restaurant were beautiful, which made the experience more enjoyable despite the food. Overall, the service and ambiance stood out positively, but the food itself wasn't memorable enough for us to consider a return visit. read more

I visited Ink & Ale having never heard of it- a group lunch. I was excited about visiting a new place. We had a reservation for a large group. Service was super efficient and pleasant. I prefer draft beer and was happy with the list. However, the pricing on the menu did not match what I was charged. I didn't notice it at the time and am not sure if it's because the pricing is outdated on the menu or if the price is for a pint and the server decided everyone was getting a larger size. We noted the giant beers but again, at the time I didn't think anything of it. Either way isn't a good thing. I had a the chicken salad. The dressing was served on the side and the toppings were generous. I was happy with the food itself but wish it came in a bowl vs a flat plate. Not a big deal. This was my first visit here and to downtown New Castle. I'm definitely interested in coming back, especially for the brunch. read more

Had a nice time at Ink & Ale several months ago, but recently tried it again on a quieter evening. Had a tremendous experience with both food and service. Started off with fried calamari (pretty standard) and the Mediterranean Trio app - whipped feta, hummus, and olives with pita wedges (very tasty). We had a grilled chicken sandwich (nicely juicy) and a classic breaded tenderloin (not overly breaded or dry) and crusted fries that didn't get soggy. The Poinsettia Mimosa and Merlot Mule (not for the faint of heart) were part of the seasonal cocktail menu and did not skimp on alcohol. Sprung for the dessert special, Orange Phyllo "cake," made from chopped phyllo tastefully combined with orange - that was fun! Prices were average for pub fare, entrees about $15 each. If you're not a local you might not know this is located in the former newspaper print shop, but beautifully renovated, as well as kid-friendly. Take time to look around you. Can't say enough about our server Carly, who was also tending bar. She was fantastic. She's also a HS teacher getting her masters in social work. Have tried this place twice now over about 10 months, the 2nd time was better than the 1st. It's a neat concept as they converted a former newspaper building into a restaurant and bar that also offers a golf simulator and axe throwing. It's kind of hidden as its front entrance and parking are not on the main road but kind of in back. The 1st time we went was their grand opening and I found the ventilation to be a bit strong as it dried out my eyes, which was extra-challenging as they haven't been overly quick after placing your order to receipt of your food on either visit. However, I didn't have any issues with the vents on the 2nd visit. Service was pleasant and attentive on both visits. For a non-meat eater, their menu is a tad limited. My wife really enjoys their Mediterranean Salad ($13.99), which is a substantial mix of romaine wedge, whipped feta, red onions, tomatoes, and an excessive amount of olives. She ordered it on both visits and said she would do so again. I tried their Hot Off the Press Double Smash ($16.49), but substituted for their black bean burger. It was OK, but definitely not worth the price tag. Also, the fries were subpar and reminded me of LJS. On the 2nd visit, they had a Friday special of Fish Sandwich ($9.99), which was a substantially better sandwich size-wise and absolutely a better value. The fries were still subpar. We will still consider coming here as it's a nice option for meeting family between Indy and Richmond. I just wish that had more non-meat options or more reasonable prices. It also wouldn't hurt if they figured out how to serve fries more like 5 Arch Brewing Co. in Centerville. read more

The potatoes that came with it were amazing! The pancake combo was an excellent deal for the amount of food and coffee for the price! And it was really good! Biscuits and gravy were classic. My wife and I used to frequent this place often, but the quality has gone downhill, and one of their managers hates america and openly admits to it. Being a 100% P&T Disabled vet i brought this to one of the owners attention to which he basically made fun of it and threw it back in my face. Came here before my class reunion. Nice beer and cider selection, but some of the ones I wanted to try were out. Wasn't too hungry, but the burgers sounded really good, so if we go back I will definitely try one. We ordered their shrimp appetizer along with the Mediterranean trio. The shrimp appetizer was nice and hot but their version of the "bang bang" sauce was not that good. It reminded me of a mild buffalo sauce mixed with mayo and a hint of sweetness. Just not much flavor and overall odd combination. I wanted something more to excite my taste buds. You could easily tell that the shrimp was a pre-breaded, pre-packaged frozen variety. Don't really recommend for $10+. The Mediterranean trio was disappointing. The pita chips, even though hot, were almost too hard to bite into. The hummus was not fresh and when it was served to us, there was a hard, dry crust on top. It was like it had been sitting out and just dried out. The whipped feta was not my favorite. I absolutely love feta cheese and after taking just one bite, I did not go back for seconds. You would think that the olives would have been in like a dip form, chopped up or something to that affect since this app was served with pita, but no. The olives were whole and felt out of place. You couldn't use the pita with the olives because the olive would roll right off. Definitely do not recommend this appetizer at all! read more
