The Pizza Fries. These fried dough "egg rolls" contain pepperoni and cheese and are served with a most excellent red dipping sauce. They used to be called Pizza Fryes which was a take on the Historical Dude Founder's name. The Wedding Soup was also a favorite. It was loaded with meatballs and all the other goodness wedding soup has. I had a bowl because I knew it would be good. The pizza wasn't my favorite, but I was already kinda full from the other stuff too, so it didn't get a fair chance. I was kinda bummed they didn't use pasta as a straw. So much fun drinking that way. Love the extra carbs, but I can understand why they went with regular straws. They still serve soda pop in mason jars though. Be Excellent to Each Other! And enjoy your trip to The Italian Oven.

Delicious Italian Comfort Food…read more The food here is really good in this Family Style Italian Restaurant. I visited on a Friday night and was seated quickly. Entrees come with salad and fresh bread. I ordered the Stromboli Deluxe and my wife ordered the Chicken Marsala. Both dishes were delicious and the portions were large. This is very good Italian food and the prices are fair. The restaurant itself is a bit old, but it was clean. The restaurant's decor could really use a refresh, and the men's room needs an overhaul. This is a nice place to eat.

When I asked the front desk staff what might be a good place for dinner, she recommended not this spot but the popular restaurant bar next door. Iconoclast that I am, I decided to venture into the cold pitch black and walked about ten minutes. A polite South Asian man greeted me. Seated in the adjacent dining room, I was the only diner until a couple showed up about a half hour later. The menu was robust, and I was hungry after a long drive from Downtown Pittsburgh. First I ordered the $6.50 Agedashi Tofu, which was not the traditional appetizer. It consisted of large wedges of deep-fried tofu covered with bonito shavings and accompanied by tempura sauce (Photo 9). It was pretty good with an emphasis on quantity. Portion was to be a recurring theme as my entree was the abundant $26.95 Sashimi Deluxe consisting of a dozen pieces of fish plus a tuna roll cut into six pieces (Photo 10). It was a decent variety of mostly thick slices of maguro, hamachi, and ebi. No salmon though and there were imitation crab sticks. The tuna roll was rather generic. Again I was impressed more by the quantity than the quality. Certainly plenty of wasabi and ginger. I didn't leave room for the complimentary miso soup (Photo 8) much less any notion of dessert. Their menu expands to poke bowls, yakisoba, and four different ramen bowls. They even offer General Tso's chicken and shrimp. That level of versatility is impressive, but it's been my experience that not everything can be well executed consistently. Regardless, if I was a local resident of Connellsville, I'm sure I'd be here a lot. FOOD - 3 stars...quantity was impressive, quality was variable AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...spacious dining room, not much on decor SERVICE - 4 stars...quite attentive TOTAL - 3 stars...you can have sashimi in Connellsville RELATED - Exploring the Pittsburgh area? The specials may be a but expensive (16.95), but the regular rolls are great, and its hard to find halfway decent food nowadays for cheap. When we arrived (party of three), my husband and I ordered a small pizza and 12 wings, and our friend ordered a pot roast sandwich with wings. It took about 15 minutes just for someone to take our drink order. Our waitress explained there was a delay due to staff singing happy birthday, which we understood. After placing our food order, we waited another 20 minutes. Eventually, the kitchen brought out both orders of wings and the pot roast sandwich--but no pizza. When our waitress checked on us, we mentioned the missing pizza, and she explained it comes from a separate line and would be out later. That was fine, but no effort was made to check on it or follow up. We nearly finished all of our food, and still no pizza. Our waitress then returned with boxes and the check, asking if we needed anything else. At that point, I again mentioned the missing pizza. She rolled her eyes and repeated that it comes from a different line. By then, we were already done eating and no longer wanted it. What followed was extremely unprofessional. After we declined the pizza, she stormed off, removed it from the bill, then came back holding the pizza, dropped the check on the table, and said, "Well here it is--you don't want it?!" She then offered the pizza to a nearby table in an irritated tone. When I said I would be mentioning this in my review, she responded, "I don't know why you're so mad, I did nothing wrong." When I tried to calmly explain the situation from a customer perspective, she interrupted, put her hand up toward me, and said, "Whatever, I don't care, you're nasty." She then continued speaking negatively about us to coworkers within earshot. This was one of the most unprofessional dining experiences I've ever had. There was no apology at any point, no accountability, and no basic courtesy such as thanking us or acknowledging us when we left. The food was okay, but the service completely overshadowed the experience.

We first stopped a couple of months ago and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, so we've been going there about once a week since then, usually for pancakes but the last few times we've tried lunch fare, today I had a a bowl of cheesy chicken tortilla soup and half a grilled cheese sandwich, I also had the hands down best, ( made with real chocolate ice cream), chocolate milk shake I've ever had . The restaurant wasn't busy, I went to the counter and was told they didn't have sherbet. This surprised and disappointed me, I didn't actually want ice cream but ordered a mint chocolate chip cone, my favorite. For the price of what I was given, somebody needs to be arrested for highway robbery. $3.17 for this pathetic little single scoop cone, and compared to the ice cream I've scooped over the years this was NOT a full scoop. But this is what they laughingly sell for $3.17. Had I known I could have gone next door to Dollar General, paid a little more and bought a full carton. Their freezer temperature was obviously too low, this ice cream (what there was of it) was so soft I had to eat it faster than normal, wasted my money and did not enjoy it at all. I won't be coming back, ever. Friendly servers though.
