Well it is a "real pizzaria" and with that said it was......well good?!? The service was spot on for a take out place. They were friendly and joking around. Good group. The place almost feels like Sam's place.......just almost. Miss the seating, miss Sam. The crust was good, topping were a good amount and tasty enough. BUT not sure what has changed, Pizza Sams Pizza is not the same. It just tastes different, not bad, but also not a craveable pizza as for decades in the past. I remeber going to this place with my Grandpa, ofcourse he and the owner lnew each other. The food was great. Not too many years ago I would attend meetings with the owner. Often he supplied pizza and it was never a dissapointment. Glad to see it is still here and open, BUT once again it does not taste like a Sam's pizza. My husband had been raving about Pizza Sam as his go-to pizza during his years at Alma almost 25 years ago. Finally after 20 years of him raving about it, I got to stop in to try. I entered the pizza place and the front staff didn't bother to greet. That was okay. Maybe they were all busy? The next customer walked in and was happily greeted and the next. I told my husband quietly that this happened when he entered later. Then as people left they were happily thanked especially by the red capped gentlemen making the pies. The first time I had Pizza Sam's pizza I thought it was disgusting. Then something happened. Possibly a chemical reaction from eating it while drunk. Or maybe if you live in Alma for a period of time and drink the water (or just bathe in it) a craving kicks in. Anyway it goes I have an undying love for pepperoni, baked on a screen with spices and a side of ranch. Post college friends and I will come up with anyway we can to get it including out of the way stops on the way up north. To those not from Alma or not an Alma College student, you are probably not going to get what the big deal is. And I'll tell you what we told our nay saying friend, none Alma friend, "shut your mouth!" Note: You go here for the pizza. I generally forget that they have a menu that includes other items. I am asking my friends who typically order from Pizza Sam's to boycott their business. Please continue reading. I hesitated last night about posting this but after sleeping on it, I decided something needed to be said. Our family has always enjoyed pizza from Pizza Sams of Alma for as long as I can remember. After Tim & I moved to Marquette we've made it a point to get pizza from Sam's whenever we visit. I know Sam had a reputation of not always being a 'nice guy', but his grandson put him to shame last night. After opening the lid to the pizza, posted here, I was surprised to see what a sloppy mess it was. This pic is after I tried to fix it by pulling some cheese off to the side... by some, I mean about a 1/2 a cups worth! Notice the little bits of meat on the cheese side? Well that wasn't supposed to be there. Notice the large clumps of meat on the other side? Well most of that had ham that wasn't chopped and it looked like they just threw handfuls of meat without trying to spread it on the correct half (which is probably why there was meat where it didn't belong). I called and explained the condition of the pizza and was asked to send a picture. What do you suppose was the first question I received back via text? "Did YOU drop the pizza?" Followed by the statement, "We do not send pizza's out the door looking like that." Question or accusation... either way... essentially the person texting was trying to blame me, the customer. I then received a call from who I can only guess was the current owner, Vinnie. He tried to excuse the mistake but still offered to refund the cost of the pizza. I pointed out that asking me if I dropped it was insulting. Next thing I knew he was raising his voice, telling me he did NOT have to refund my damn money. I said as calmly as I could, "There is no need to raise your voice. I was simply pointing out that blaming the customer is not the way to go." I could barely speak because he continued to raise his voice. I told him I was going to reach out to John, because I know him. That set him off even worse. He started yelling at me at this point and told me there is no need to involve John. He then said, "What are you a mean mom?" Excuse me, what? I could not speak without his voice getting louder. I was called a cry baby and other names as well. I wonder if he would have had the same courage face to face as he did over the phone when he attacked a godly woman? Pizza Sam's is hands down one of my favorite places to get pizza. I, being a local, can say that my favorite pizza is ham, bacon, and pineapple, double crust, baked on a screen, with the spices baked in. I do double crust which makes the pizza crust hearty, baked on a screen to make the crust crispy and spices baked it to give the pizza that extra pop of flavor. They also do not skimp on the toppings. Each pizza you can tell is homemade with love, and always a treat. Now the staff is not always the friendliest, thought they have improved a lot over the years, and the resturant is a little out dated, but in my oppinon none of that matters when you get great food!! I useually do take out, and they always tell me 10 minutes. I have yet to see them not make the 10-15 minute mark with my orders. read more

Pizza Sam is an Alma tradition, really a rite of passage. I am going to pass on the Alma words of wisdom: double crust baked on a screen. Any Alum can tell you that ordering without those words means a pizza disaster. If you live on campus, you can get delivery, at your own risk! The guy is moderately creepy (that was being VERY nice) and knocking is not something he partakes in. Be prepared. I paid Pizza Sams a visit the last time I was back home visiting family. It had been over 15 years since I had been there but it crossed my mind and I thought I'd re-live some old memories while at the same time, introduce my fiance to some fabulous pizza. Pizza Sams is an institution, not just in Alma but for the surrounding communities. I grew up about a half hour away and recall my high school boyfriend's mother giving us spending money to go on a date in Alma with the condition that we bring her home a ham pizza from Pizza Sams. During my recent visit I was pleased to see that nothing had changed. Not only did they have the same great pizza but the place looks no different than it did during my childhood. I am told that Sam himself can still be seen working hard. We didn't see him during our visit but his wife was there making sure everything ran smoothly. It is mighty impressive watching the staff at the front working their butts off preparing takeout orders. The phone rings non-stop and they are like a well-oiled machine- pizzas going in the oven, others coming out, boxes assembled at lightening speed. Sam has always been known for running a tight ship and it shows- those employees are putting their heart, soul and sweat into their work. They have other items on the menu. However, with the exception of my grandfather who would always order a steak when we went there, I never see any table order anything except pizza. Smart move- their pizza can't be beat. read more

Its clear that some of the reviewers of Pizza Sam are confusing this location with the location in Midland MI. Pizza Sam in Alma is the original and Pizza Sam in Midland was a knock off. Originally P.S. in Midland was owned by the same guy but he sold it and the current owners messed with all the recipes. The pizza from Sam in Alma is by far the best pizza I have ever had. After living in Chicago (known for its pies) for several years I would like to think I have a good understanding of good pizza. Also I am originally from Wisconsin and we know our cheeses. Pizza Sam in Alma has, quite possibly, the finest cheese in all of pizza-dom. This is the kind of pizza I have dreams about, litteraly! Kelly B. was absolutely right. :) I have to say that it's probably the best tasting pizza in the town of Alma. My friend and I usually order a medium with the "perfect saying" and we can only consume 2 slices coz their so BIG. The prices here complement the college lifestyle - broke. Sam's pizza provides the perfect sustenance for the hungry students. This place is an Alma tradition... After the Highland Festival 5K run, my friend and I met some of the locals at Sam's. Pizza SAMs is a rite of passage for any Alma College student/alumni. There are a million ways to order the Za, double crust, baked on the screen, double cut, spices baked in. I recommend that it be baked on the screen for your first try and then venture from there. Crispy, thin and authentic pepperoni with their fluffy wads of ham. There is no bad way to go with a SAMs pizza. Love the fact that the decor has not changed in years. My parents went on their first date here in 80' and it hasn't changed much since. My husband and I love Pizza Sams and we order from there all the time. The pizza dough is home-made, the sauce is delicious; all the ingredients are fresh and the pizzas are amazing. Not to mention the cheese bread is to die for. The downfalls: The restaurant is crowded, outdated, not handicap accessible, and very cramped. Bringing an infant in there is a nightmare. The bathroom is so small you can barely close the door behind you. It's an ugly brown color and very dark in there. The biggest downfall of this place is the staff. They always seem angry and are very rude towards you. When we order take out, they never tell us the time to pick up or ask the name and then hang up before we can say anything. It's a hometown favorite. I've been eating sam's as long as I can remember. It's a three-generation family establishment and they've earned their loyal customers, myself included. Some say that you have to be raised on it to appreciate it. I've been all over looking for a pizza on equal footing with Sam's and I just can't seem to find one. Nothing beats my "usual". Pizza Sam's, a popular choice among the student body here at Alma College. As a "hole in the wall" type of establishment, I was expecting a lot more. But more so on the fact that I am from one of the pizza capitals of the United States, Chicago to be exact. I may or may not be a little biased or hold pizza to a higher standard. Okay so with this place service is wonderful, no complaints there. But, the tomato sauce on each pizza my party shared, they both lacked that all important made in house type of tomato sauce that you know straight away is a special family recipe handed down with each generation. It just wasn't there. And not mention the mozzarella cheese was not anything special. It had a nice consistency to it, but it just wasn't that flavorful. The toppings on them were also subpar at best. Of course the pizza is not anything special, but I must admit it wouldn't be a pizza that I would complain about trying again some time. I have been a loyal customer of Pizza Sams since 1978 and have never had a bad pizza, until twice in the last three weeks. I usually don't give reviews but I feel this trend is worth mentioning. Especially since I made an effort to bring up my comment to the staff. Who in the end could have cared less it seemed. As I mentioned I have been a patron of Pizza sams a long time. In most cases we travel from the Lansing area just to get pizza. The last two visits in three weeks have been the most disappointing in the entire time I have been in. Three weeks ago our Pizza was not cooked in the middle to which our waitress said "you got too much ham and the crust can't cook". The wait staff has never been the strongest part of the team at Sams and we chalked it up to a bad night and left. Tonight I stopped again on my way back from hunting up north and ordered a med with ham and mushroom. My intention was to take the balance home to share with my wife. The pizza came out with so much crust and so little topping I had two slices and left the balance on the table. The waitress never came back the entire time I was there from the time someone else dropped off the bread loaf. I tried to tell the cashier, who I assumed was the manager. She was too busy to hear me and referred me to who appeared to be a cook. I told him my pizza had basically no topping and was all crust. His response was "ok". Not the response I expected... A college favorite of mine! This place has been around for years, so many years that my Dad dined here in his college years in the 70s. It's a no frills kinda place, but the pizza is fantastic. Great sauce, fresh assortment of toppings. Baked on a screen, double crust with a side of ranch is the way to go.
