Our group of 6 did some quick searches and we found Il Pichio rosso was the closest restaurant with good reviews. We were quickly greeted and seated in the small restaurant. This is definitely a locals type place as we were the only tourists there the entire time. They speak very limited english but with our limited Italian we were able to figure each other out. I would categorize this place and mostly pizza/calzones with some pasta dishes. The house red wine was excellent and inexpensive. We started off with bruschetta which was prepared so simply, just flatbread fresh tomatoes and olive oil. Absolutely delicious and a great start. Two of us ordered the calzone, three ordered the spaghetti carbonara and one ordered the veal milanese. The calzones were huge and at 7 Euro a definite bargain. The carbonara was okay for me, but I had better in Rome. It was a little bland and just needed some more saltiness like pancetta or parmigiano-reggiano. I was told the veal was very good but did not try it. For 6 of us the bill was 90 Euro which we all thought was reasonable considering we had 2 liters of wine and beer with our lunch. I would recommend for pizza or calzone but look elsewhere if in the mood for pasta.

Almost certainly the best you'll get in Riomaggiore while eating. There are 10 tables on the rail with a perfect view to the sea. The sad news is that they don't do reservations anymore so planners don't get a leg up on setting a table aside. The service here was sub-par, but the server was very nice. We started with the cheese plate and some moscato. I didn't like a couple of the cheeses but the wine was great. For dinner, I ended up with the classic lasagna and I thought it was just ho hum. I got to try some of my daughter's pesto and that I found to be better than the lasagna.

We'd been traveling through northern Italy for 7 days. We unpacked and went straigh to A pie for dinner. We didn't mind a wait because the location was amazing. Things went south from there. Please understand that we hadn't had one bad meal in Italy (3 meals a day for 7 days). The seafood apetizer was a scrawny pile of tiny veggies and tiny seafood. The staff were rude. We waited an hour for the meal and it took us almost half an hour to get a drink and then they ignored us for an hour after that. Others around us, locals, were being charmed and served quickly and professionally. We were treated as if we were nothing of value. Dinner was the worst pasta I'd had in Italy. By the time we left I'd had it. I'm sure some people get good meals there. We are very respectful and kind to all servers wherever we go so there was not call for this. Looking forward to another meal elsewhere to change our opinoin.
