I was a regular at Oxalis in Crown Heights and already loved what that team does, so when my wife surprised me with a reservation here, I knew we were in for something special. And it didn't disappoint. The space itself sets the tone immediately: exposed brick, beautifully distressed walls, and an open kitchen anchored by two large bars. It's warm and lively without feeling too loud, ideal for a date, catching up with a close friend, or a celebratory night out. We started with a complimentary glass of bubbly from Hungary, which was a lovely touch. From there we ordered a Garden/Variety cocktail (PDF Meyer lemon spirit, market herbs) and a Spring Gimlet (gin, tart cherry, citrus leaf), both excellent and well-balanced. Food-wise, every dish felt thoughtfully composed, beautifully presented, and really good! - The fluke came with rhubarb and pea tendrils: bright, fresh, and a great way to start. - A royal red shrimp special was a highlight, with that deep, sweet shrimp flavor you don't often get. - The crispy maitake mushrooms with black garlic fudge were earthy and crunchy; and the black garlic added a rich umami depth. - We also had the Ojibwe wild rice with morel mushrooms and egg yolk, which was fantastic: hearty and luxurious, packed with flavor. My favorite dish of the evening. - The campanelle pasta with ramps and wild spinach was a perfect seasonal pasta: simple, perfectly balanced, and tasty. Every plate had that "letting the ingredients shine" quality the kitchen is known for: No unnecessary garnish, just really thoughtful, seasonal cooking. Had a really lovely dinner here with my wife. The kitchen really executed the dishes as a high level. Every item is as it was intended to be and it really lets the flavors shine. Service was really nice. The staff dotted their "i"s and crossed their "t"s. Wait staff had a very high level knowledge of the ingredients to be able to watch out for allergies. Food was great. I had the fried mushroom with black garlic, the okinawan potato (must order), the lemon pesto pasta, and the strip steak. -I didnt love the fried mushroom but my wife did. It was super crispy just wasnt up my alley. -the okinawan potato blew my socks off. It just wasnt what I expected the sauce and onions reminded me a little of a ceviche and with the sweet potato I was just so satisfied. - lemon kale pesto pasta was great. The lemon packs a lovely punch and pasta was perfectly cooked. Bonus points for a nut-less pesto. -I enjoyed the strip steak. It doesnt have the crust you might expect but was very tender. The richness of the sabayon and the tart punch of the cherries is a nice addition. Personally I think a couple potatoes on the plate would be nice to mellow it out a bit. Came to Place des Fetes with my wife for a celebratory dinner, and we were blown away by the quality of the service, the food, wine selection, and overall cozy yet romantic vibe! While definitely a splurge for a date night, it felt very reasonable for the quality and uniqueness of the dishes. We had a reservation on a Friday evening at the bar, and it still was incredible service and felt like we had our own room / space to enjoy ourselves. Food-wise we got a lot of dishes, and really wish we could've tried everything on their menu! Every dish we had was exceptional, and we had a wide-range of seafood forward dishes - which required different preparations and the chefs knocked them out of the park. I don't want to spoil the magic of all the dishes, but some of our highlights were the smoked trout salad, mackerel toast, and the fish bits. We were also between two desserts, but went with the financier with smoked dates in the middle and it was such a treat. I love the glance into the open kitchen and always opt for counter seating. My partner planned my birthday dinner for the two of us here! The candle light was a nice touch and the place itself was the perfect level of dim. Although I will say the tables are quite snug together and I felt risqué sliding between my neighbors table to get to the inner seat They gave complimentary champagne and a handwritten birthday card which was a lovely surprise! This Spanish wine bar located in Brooklyn is truly a gem. The inside of the restaurant is romantic, warm, and inviting. The staff here is so friendly and helpful in giving recommendations for both food, wine pairings, and just wine in general. When I went, I got the fluke, sweet potato, santa maria steak, and one of their specials that day. Everything was delicious, but my favorite dish was definitely the sweet potato with caviar. A warm, cozy wine bar with an open kitchen and inventive tapas. We walked in without a reservation on a Saturday night and took about 30 min to get a seat. Unfortunately all the table and bar seats were taken, so we were sat on the small bench near the wall, which was still nice. Food: While the menu is seasonal and changes all the time, everything we ate was excellent, so I feel that no matter what you get, you'll be satisfied We ordered 4 different tapas: the sardine toast, bangs island mussels en verde, crispy maitake mushroom, and pork collar. The sardine toast was a perfect start with a spatchcocked sardine on top of a layer of smoked butter that was more akin to a sophisticated cream cheese all on a thick multi-grained toast. Simple and one of my favorites. The bang island mussels were coated in a tar colored sauce swimming in fine olive oil had notes of oceanic brine and herb with tangy landmines of what I think were pickled minced onion. The maitake had such a satisfying light crisp with a meaty bite that was addictively dippable in the creamy black garlic sauce. Finally, the pork collar dish with the cabbage and radish was reminiscent of fatty ham hoc with yummy spicy sauce, and was the perfect bookend to the meal. Service: Service was good and wait staff were attentive. Even if there was a minor issue, they were immediately attentive and courteous. At this price point, I would have expected more of *something*: more quantity, more taste, more adventurous dishes. The standouts on the menu were the gem salad (truly the best salad I've had), the sardines, and the maitake mushrooms. The last Place des Fêtes I went to was a quiet station on Metro Line 7bis, the Franklin Avenue shuttle equivalent of Paris, in the uncelebrated 19ème. This Place des Fêtes was far more welcoming and befitting of its celebratory name. From a vegetarian's standpoint, the destination dish here is the maitake mushroom with black garlic fudge, whose flavor is as elusive as its title. It pairs well with the sourdough, of which we consumed far too much. In the spirit of the upcoming fête of unleaveaned bread, we also tried the farinata, which came with a smoky mix of garbanzo and avocado and was a lovely light addition to the meal. read more

I don't understand how this place doesn't have only five stars. The food my friend and I had was all phenomenal (fluke, cabbage salad, sourdough bread, Spanish mackerel, maitake mushrooms, and bucatini. Place des Fetes recommends everything be shared, and that a table orders 3-5 plates per person. Instead, we went with the popular Bangs Island Mussels en Verde and Crispy Maitake Mushroom small dishes. The mussels had a great bright green sauce that makes it appealing for even the least seafood friendly person at the table. The mushrooms were served fried with a black garlic fudge. So, so delicious. Yes, this is a wine bar.. but we couldn't help ourselves but to order cocktails. I got the Yuzu Collins which essentially tasted like 7up. My friend made the genius decision to get a Margarita. I promise you, this is the best balanced margarita I've ever had. Really great balance of each element. And of course, once we knew there was a dessert menu, I needed to have it. We ordered the Basque Cheesecake (plum and magnolia) and the Choux Craquelin with Soba Cha and Grape. I'm not typically a cheesecake fan so while I thought it was good I wasn't too impressed. The choux on the other hand... amazing and fantastic. Literally yum! Started with warmest welcome from all the staff members and we were seated in the dimly lit corner booth in the rustic back room. Every single dish we've had were PHEONMENAL: raw lamb, garbanzo, oxalis - similar to a tartar, what a fun bite don bocarte anchovies - I want to eat these every day for the rest of my life cabbage, clams special - wow, just wow. the sauce was out of this world. pork country rib chop, jus de viande, erbette - can you believe I used to not eat pork because pork in this country stinks? My favorites were the mains - we got the black bass and malfadine pasta. The frontage ice cream was also incredible and I wanted more. The sardine toast was salty (although expected), the mussels were quite sour and a little fishy, the potato dish sauce was delicious but the flour part had very little flavor and just felt like balls of dough. We went here for our team dinner and had a pretty large group. They had a large table ready for us with custom printed menus and a very dedicated wait staff. From the minute we entered to the point we left, they made each of us feel so warm and welcome, catered to every varying need and dietary restriction, and did so with huge smiles. We had 15 different dishes (and a few custom dishes for those with restrictions) and every single dish was made with finesse and care, bursting with flavor and with fresh ingredients that worked in perfect harmony together. The chef had clearly put a lot of thought into their menu and I appreciated that. The three most outstanding dishes of the night for me were: 1. The bucatini with green peppers and razor clams. This was one of the nicest pastas I've had in a very long time. Very unique and different from what you'd usually get, and everything just worked flawlessly. I could easily go back just to devour a huge bowl of this. 2. The crispy lamb with whole wheat flatbread and green harissa looked unassuming, but it was an absolute flavor bomb. Highly recommend. 3. Ah, Place des Fêtes-- yet another paragon of these modern wine bar times with the expected natural wine list and cerebral fare (my fave). Approaching their minimalist doors and host stand, one expects (or rather I expected) skin-contact wines flowing freely from the sommelier to each well informed guest. My knowledgeable server did offer great pairing suggestions, but the flavors ultimately proved to be more cookie cutter than I hoped. Of the well prepared plates, the bangs island mussels in piquillo broth was the best bite, with a nice peppery zing from the piquillo. Their crispy maitake mushrooms I also enjoyed, crowned by a tasty yet strangely named "black garlic fudge." The spicy squash rigatoni was comforting but not amazing. When it came time for dessert, I wavered between the chocolate choux and butter pecan ice cream. Coming to my rescue our server offered for me to choose one and brought out the other dessert on the house so I didn't need to choose. They allowed my date and I to linger for some time after our meal was done, while we enjoyed more wine and the chill ambience. Place des Fêtes is Oxalis's more casual sister restaurant and fans of Oxalis or just fans of the wine bar format will enjoy this neighborhood spot, if not for the novelty of the food but the superb service and excellent wine list. read more

Is it crazy to say this is my number 1 favorite restaurant I've been to in new york? An extremely high quality restaurant without the pretentiousness and high price points. I tasted one of the best pastas I've ever had. Ordered a buccatini pasta with a nice level of spice to it, with flavors that are indescribable but blend so well together. We also got some dessert that had paw paw cream on it. We asked the chef in front of us what it was and he explained that it was a rare fruit that needed to be pureed immediately or else the fruit goes bad. And this is exactly why I know this place is serving not only high quality, but unique flavors. They also have a phenomenal wine selection! It was difficult to know how much to order given the range of dish sizes and the lack of much correlation with price (some of the bites were like $20). The waitress was unfortunately not very helpful. We aimed to order less and mentioned that we might order another dish later; "the kitchen typically doesn't like when you do that." I cannot understand why she would say this. If we ultimately wanted to order it, we would have felt uncomfortable but presumably the kitchen would have made the order. If we didn't, she made it clear to us the place is inflexible for no reason. Also, we were seated in the middle of service - there was no issue preventing them from making an additional pasta. I personally didn't mind too much, but I found it representative of the service: aloof. There weren't too many people and I found it odd how infrequent it was. The food was great. Dishes were simple and really highlighted the quality of the ingredients. One of the dishes was just 5 anchovies. Best anchovies of my life and they literally cost $1 each in bulk. The steak was simple and perfect. A galette de rois was a fun special. Cost per person (including a bottle of wine) was $60. reasonable, though we probably would have ordered another dish if we wanted to fill up. Tables are a tight squeeze, but the decor and ambiance are really nice. We started out with cocktails. I got the margarita which was a little bit acidic. We got the mussels, bread, sardine toast, fried maitake mushroom, gnudi, and pork collar. The mussels were awesome. I love that they were already shelled and lined up underneath the squid ink sauce. Definitely a must order. The sardine toast was probably the most delicious thing we ate. Perfectly balanced over a piece of sourdough bread. The maitake mushroom was also very good. The gnudi reminded me more of a firm gnocchi, probably not something I'd choose again. The pork collar was great - a fun cut to have on the menu. Started out hot--the tuna tartare served with a fluffy horseradish cream was an absolute highlight, a small plate that left us craving more. Mussels em tinto were pretty good as well--a bit too one note and purely tart/a bit overwhelmed by the sauce, but still enjoyable. Next we had some Bread and olive oil and cheese, and here's where the price point and portion size really annoyed me. Paying for bread in general annoys me, and $10 for a small plate of bread is just a major nuisance. And the cheese was just fine, but a tiny portion of one cheese does that I could have bought at most nearby specialty cheese stores died not a cheese plate make. Finally had the crispy maitake mushroom with black garlic fudge--tasty but small--as a veggie side to a stingray wing as a special entree. Thought this sounded unique and interesting to try--was recommended by the server--but ultimately it was overly breaded and a bit bland, chewy, and dry--quite a disappointment. Wine selection was quite good and enjoyable throughout. Not cheap of course but many options for parings. We got a small side table which was ok but a bit cramped. Overall ok, but at price point and for experience and given many other options in the area, can't see heavily recommending and don't see ourselves going back. read more

Stopped in after dinner for wine and cheese. The server was very knowledgeable of their wine and made perfect suggestions. The cheese he paired with the wine was incredible-as was the citrus salad. My only negative is I was over charged, as we had half glasses (they had offered for us to split 50/50 each glass/pairing since we werent big drinkers) but the bill ended up having each as a full glass charge. read more

The Fish is quite a surprise (don't remember the name...it's an around $70ish dish in the last section of the menu). Very tender, and more importantly for a person who is super sensitive about the fishy taste, no fishy smell was tasted at all. The vegetables dish was the special of the day and it is like pickled vegetables. Especially love the ham and the crispy mushroom! The mushroom is very crispy while the mushroom inside remains juicy. A very wonderful taste (it is like you are having some delicious meat but it's actually mushroom). All dishes go well with the sourdough too! read more
