A Brooklyn Institution Frankies 457 Spuntino has been a popular Carroll Gardens institution since 2004, founded by chefs Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli -- known lovingly throughout Brooklyn as "the Franks." In the two decades since they opened their doors on Court Street, they have become far more than a restaurant. It is a neighborhood culinary touchstone, and proof that consistent Italian cooking done with care and soul never goes out of style. I live not far from Court Street, and the walk to Frankies was its own kind of anticipation, hoping not to get lost with Google maps redirecting me on different streets, in the same urban sprawl neighborhood the entire way. Food is a universal language. Like football (GO USA! Shockingly, Italy failed to qualify for the FIFA 2026 World Cup!)-- it crosses every border, every culture, every generation. It is common ground. And Frankies, from the moment you arrive, the restaurant speaks that language fluently. The Setting The cozy interior exudes a vintage charm -- tin ceilings, Edison bulbs, exposed brick walls. The kind of warm dining room that makes you want to settle in, order another bottle of wine, and stay for hours. On a weekday night, our table of four was not rushed. And then there is the magical garden at Frankies which is one of Brooklyn's quiet treasures -- a scenic, verdant escape that feels a world away from the subway humming just beyond the gate. That evening, we looked across the garden to find a private party in full swing. And then -- because this is New York, and New York never stops surprising you -- we spotted Matt Damon among many star-studded guests, hosting what appeared to be a birthday celebration, perhaps a belated toast for his The Odyssey co-star Tom Holland. Only in Brooklyn. Only at Frankies. The Olive Oil Frankies organic extra virgin olive oil is exceptional -- clean, grassy, peppery, delicious. It is available at the restaurant and online, and I order it regularly. This olive oil elevates everything it touches. If you leave Frankies without a bottle, go back. The Food We arrived to catch up and the table was exactly what a great Italian meal should be -- jovial, generous, noisy with laughter, plates passed and shared with a Barolo wine my friend Susan, an experienced sommelier, picked from the wine selection. The meatballs are legendary -- feather-light, tender, lavished with raisins and pine nuts, served in a rich, satisfying sauce that tastes like it has been simmering since morning. These are, without question, the best meatballs in Brooklyn. Walking out the door, I told the manager you have the best meatballs in town. He agreed, then laughed. " I have been telling everyone that for years." The mozzarella plate was fresh, silky, and perfectly plated-- simple and stunning in the way that only the best ingredients can be. Similar to the above - order more than one if splitting among more than two people. -Caesar: exactly how a caesar should taste. Crisp lettuce, cheesy, garlicky, creamy. -Meatballs: comes with three. As the name suggests: Frankie's located at 457 Court Street is a spot with an extensive snack menu. It's an Italian take on tapas where you lounge, drink good wine, and work your way through an extensive list of curated plates, crostinis, antipastos, salads, and eventually sandwiches or smaller entrees if you have appetite. I think Frankie's 457 expects customers to hang around and not feel rushed. The relaxed atmosphere seems to be priced into the menu as they don't strive for a rapid turnover. I started with a glass of Barolo, the anchovy crostini, and the pine nut polenta while waiting for the rest of our group to arrive. These three plus tax and tip was about $45. Barolo was the best value at $20. The single crostini topped with two anchovy filets was $7 while the bowl of polenta was $8. Anchovies were on the lighter side in terms of saltiness and oilyness. They laid on a fresh piece of bread (I believe a sourdough variety) which allowed the more delicate fish to standout over a toasted bread. Polenta was creamy and cheesy. A wonderful but small bowl. Once the rest of our party arrived, we placed a more complete order. We started with the mozzarella platter. It comes with three varieties of mozzarella in a generous pool of oil along with fresh cracked black pepper. I'd estimate around a pound or so of mozzarella for the $28 platter. I wasn't quote able to pin point the difference in the flavors of the mozzarella styles, but the textures were quite different. One was a traditional firm and juicy style. Another was ultra soft and creamy. The last one had a more rugged texture that I'd best describe as a stringyness. The black pepper was granulated coarsely which led to some peppery bites. Alongside the platter, we were served the honey and whipped ricotta crostini. Again, I loved it being served on a fresh yet sturdy slice of bread. Ricotta and honey were a perfect pairing. The $7 price tag was the only thing I had a hard time swallowing. Our group decided on some of the bigger plates for our next round. We shared the eggplant marinara, the cavatelli with sausage, and sweet potato ravioli. The eggplant is a less cheesy version of eggplant parmigiana. It's a homey and savory dish that I imagine is a favorite here. The cavatelli and ravioli were more interesting options that I don't recall seeing at Italian restaurants. The cavatelli was a very chewy and egg variety that greatly resembled spatzle. Combined with the thick cut sausage chunks, it was a dish that I'd expect to find at a German or Austrian restaurant. The ravioli wrapper seemed more like an East Asian style potsticker. These dumplings were filled with a baking sliced potato filling that was on season for fall. It was served in a clear, scallion forward, Parmesan broth that again seemed to err towards East Asian cuisine. All in all, I thought the wine selection was great. It was interesting mash up of family friendly / cozy dining along with an inventive and eclectic menu. I think it's meant to be a place that locals are comfortable but will never get bored of the food. Service was attentive. Pacing of the food was a little slow to start, but picked up later on. We sat in their rear patio which had access to a spacious restroom with accessibility bars though there was one step to get to the plane of the bathroom. Both delicious were so delicious, and we were very impressed. The cavatelli was cooked perfectly and so flavorful. The short rib was tender and melts in your mouth. Had the recommended cavatelli, a sausage and broccoli rabe sandwich, and a lentil soup. Burrata was listed under the salad menu but it was just the burrata and not a burrata salad so we got a simple arugula mozzarella salad instead. The cavatelli was fine I guess? A little oily with the brown butter and sausage together but not necessarily as lifechanging as other reviews seem to make it out to be. Both the sausage with the cavatelli and the sandwich had good flavor though. The bread/foccacia for the sandwich was good but maybe a little thin cut in half? Some sections of the sandwich had more weak spots that made it a little awkward to hold. When it's warm out there is the option to sit outside in the backyard area. My server was attentive checking in etc. We had an early reservation for 5:30 and when we left a little before 7 the place was busy . The friend I was dining with has a severe allergy to tomatoes and tomato based products and her mom fresh black pepper. My boyfriend is the bee's knees. For Valentine's we went to the famous "Frankie's 457" in Carroll Gardens. I've been interested in going here for year's but never made it. This is my favorite kind of bougie restaurant. It does not feel pretentious here. There is no "foam" or essence." This is food at the highest quality. There is most definitely an Italian palette here. The clientele seems more like the casual, well to do CEO's of the northwest, not overdressed but high quality fabrics. Regulars, might I add, the people from the neighborhood, a very nice neighborhood. We made a reservation. On a Friday at 12:30 pm it was packed already. The bar was full and the tables were almost all full. The service could not be more spectacular. The gentleman really took care of us. He made sure he was taking care of us, without feeling overbearing. He was funny. I liked that he refilled our olive oil. I love that he made sure we soaked up the mozzarella tasting plate juice, exclaiming "it's the good stuff". I ordered a cocktail and my boyfriend got the German style "Rothaus" pilsner, both mind blowing. The sip of pilsner transported me back to Germany as a teen. We started with some bread and olive oil. Moved on to the mozzarella tasting plate. And then sampled the cremini and the chickpea crostini. Every bite better than the next. We also enjoyed the shaved brussel sprout salad. The entrees were delightful in every bite. I had a butternut squash with sage pasta pockets. And my boyfriend enjoyed the cavatelli and sausage. He's a hungry boy, it was more substantial and richer. I did not feel like sharing dessert but decided against the espresso. I ordered the crème brulee and my boyfriend got the tiramisu. Ohmygoodness. The tiramisu tasted better than any other tiramisu I've had before. Are these special cows that the cream comes from? What is the secret? The crème brulee was also out of this world. There was even a wedding going on in the backyard while we were there if that gives you any idea how idealic it looks. My favorite food was the gnocchi and the ricotta with honey crostini. We celebrated my wife's birthday here for dinner last night and was completely satisfied! From the service, atmosphere and stellar food all synched up perfectly without a hitch! I had the lentil soup for a starter and a few crostinis as appetizers and the meatballs for my entree which was plenty of food to not be overly stuffed yet satiated to the point of satisfaction. Frankies may not be perfect for everyone, but for me it is. First the two owners, Frank and the other Frank, have become neighborhood friends, always a hello and quick chat. The food can be amazing at times as other have noted, but it is always just what I wanted. The back garden is perfect, Brooklyn at it's best. Benefit of the doubt it was maybe just an off day for the kitchen but I haven't been this disappointed with Italian food in a long time. For $35 and $29, respectively, I was dissatisfied with the cheap quality sloppily presented antipasto plate (lunch meat, soggy broccoli, and cauliflower thrown onto a plate) and Pappardelle with Braised Lamb Ragu. The noodles were bland, pasta sauce tasted store bought, and lamb tasted cheap and not seasoned- the prices were atrocious for these dishes. Other places across boroughs have significantly higher quality charcuterie and pasta for a fraction of the price (i.e. West Village, Park Slope, and Astoria Ditmars); for $29 I'm expecting at minimum fresh made ingredients. Based on reviews we expected a much better experience. The food was hit or miss with our group, which was upsetting due to prices. The sausage in the famous cavatelli was disappointing as well as the meatballs. They were dry and dense. Stick to ordering wine/beer, cocktails were not good and it's a limited bar. As others have noted, this may be a good neighborhood restaurant but based on food, service & inside experience, there are better choices without treking to Cobble Hill. This is more a rating about food rather than anything else. Service and ambiance is what you'd expect from a restaurant at this price point. The fennel salad was great but not something I'd be dying to get again. Roasted carrots were boring. I've had and made so many roasted carrots with a ton of flavor, so that was disappointing. It was like they put no effort in it. We tried their most popular pasta, the cavatelli, with a replacement to the sausage since we don't eat pork. The waitress recommended broccoli rabe, but it was so bitter we couldn't really taste the pasta. I definitely recommend not doing that and trying something else. I had planned on not drinking tonight but towards the end of my dinner, I gave in and ordered a glass of house Cabernet. But Brendan, my waiter, came back explaining that they only had Caprai Montefalco, available by the glass. That rather modest pour was $17. All in all a very pricy meal, including charging for bread and olive oil at $3! Look I hadn't been here in well over 5 or 6 years. I know things have changed, and inflation has taken its toll, and the meal was very good but not for $82.74. Brendan was attentive and a delight a true professional. So I tipped him 20% cash. But unfortunately I don't think I'll be answering the call of "See you soon!" P.S. in hindsight I came back, to my review, after thinking about it. Maybe I've been too rough on poor Frankie? After seeing all the raving reviews for this spot, I was looking forward to trying it; but also skeptical since nothing stood out to me when I looked at the menu. Either way, I had to give it a try and called the restaurant for a reservation the day of on a Monday. Upon arrival, we were led to the back house that was outdoors but completely covered. I loved the ambiance here, especially since it was so hot inside. To start off, we got 3 Crostini ($6 each) to try out. This took a good 20 minutes to arrive from when we ordered. I got the chicken liver, cremini mushroom, and ricotta & honey. These crostinis are smaller than I expected, but the toppings were loaded that it could've almost been two pieces if I got some extra bread. I enjoyed the chicken liver most while the ricotta & honey was solid too. We thought the meatballs we ordered would come as an appetizer too as we were starving, but ended up waiting a total of 45 minutes until they arrived with the main pasta dishes. The Meatballs ($18) were huge and chunky, but nothing too special to me. It came with lots of sauce, so get some extra bread to dip it in. For the pastas, I got the Cavatelli ($30) while the boyfriend got the Papperdelle with Lamb Ragu ($28). I was not impressed with either pasta and did not like the texture nor flavor. We only ate it all up because we were seriously starving at this point waiting so long for the food. Besides the ambiance and that chicken liver crostini, I can't see myself coming back here. We also ordered the burrata with olive oil, sausage and peppers, bread and olive oil, and lamb pappardelle. They're known for their browned butter cavatelli and sausage dish, which we didn't get. Next time, I would absolutely order the heirloom tomato salad (this is a special since it's heirloom tomato season) and the sausage and peppers, as well as the bread and olive oil. Cannot say enough good things about this spot, from service to taste, everything is 10/10. It really feels like a special place you would only bring your BFFs or loved ones. We went to Frankie's in BK for lunch. They have some of the best whipped ricotta as an app. We sat outside in the back area of the restaurant. Just a beautiful day to enjoy a delicious lunch. The service was spot on and the food was amazing like always. I had the roast beef sandwich. My go to when I stop in for lunch. If you are in the Carroll Gardens area on Court St, stop in for a drink and some delicious food. Also, check out F&F for a delicious slice of pizza. read more

I bookmarked Frankies many years ago, back when the whole Brooklyn trend -- the borough as a style, a state of mind, a cultural mecca and a name for baby girls everywhere except NYC -- was really nuts. But until recently I'd never made the trek to try it out, maybe because I was subconsciously skeptical that a casual, throwback-style spot for Italian staples -- even one lauded as a trailblazer for key aspects of the aforementioned Brooklyn trend -- could really be all that special. I finally booked a table after buying some Frankies olive oil at Whole Foods. It's good stuff, sold in one of those fancy tallboy aluminum cylinders, and I was impressed with the label's description of how the olive oil is sourced from a "century-old, fully vertically integrated organic farm in Sicily" and packaged in a BPA-free can and made from some cool-sounding varietal. It suggested to me that Frankies is keeping it real despite selling its wares at a major high-end grocery store and obviously no longer just being some humble little BK eatery. Speaking of the eatery, I should probably talk about the actual restaurant. It's got gorgeous exposed brick and high ceilings and Edison bulbs and all the other interior design vibes that have practically become synonymous with the borough. The space is small, and if you can get a table near the windows by the backyard, do it. Service is professional but laid back. And then the food, damn it's excellent (and I disagree with every review that has pouted about the portions). The bread and marinara are textbook. The mozzarella tasting platter is a must -- serious quality cheese, and lots of it. The roasted vegetable salad, featuring beets and carrots and cauliflower, is beautiful and big. The gnocchi, despite not being seared, are divine, and they slide around in their bowl like slippery slabs of soap in a bathtub. Oh, and the olive oil is drizzled generously on almost everything. I have been coming here for years. I love the ambiance of this place , the outdoor seating in the summer is beautiful. Place is always packed so make sure to make reservations. The bread for the table is very good. I love how it's seasoned and the olive oil they serve it with reminds me of fresh European olive oil. I love the crostini's but unfortunately they have taken them off the menu... please bring them back! The food is consistent however nothing that I am really crazy about. The sweet potato ravioli is good but a very small portion - you will still be hungry. The cavatelli is another popular dish - very large portion. I guess they can't make up their mind. Escarole salad is one of my favorites. Cocktails menu is always seasonal and changes. Some cocktails are hit or miss. read more

Everything here hit every mark. they simply do everything right when it comes to service, food, drink, and ambiance. we were recommended this place and were told, "if you go no where else on my list of recommendations, at least go to Frankies." we are so glad we listened! this was the best meal we've had in new york. our server, Nick, was professional, genuine, knowledgeable, and relatable. he's a perfect representation of this unpretentious-yet-serious establishment. hope to be back soon! read more
