I haven't seen this many changes in a location before. I work contract to contract and am typically in a city for about 3M just as I was here. When I arrived the staff was friendly and helpful. Halfway through the assistant manager, Ryan, left. In my last 2 weeks, the manager, C (yes that is his name), transferred to another location. I had found him to be quick to smile and when a situation arose, he quickly handled it in a way that all parties walked away feeling like they won and the issue was resolved. Alyssa "took over" (her wording) and it was very clear that she doesn't like people and is annoyed when she is asked to do anything (like checking people in or setting people up with any of the equipment in the spa area). All the staff seemed to leave when C did as well. The showers sadly have rainfall showerheads making it hard to wash one's hair or shave legs so people only seem to use the last shower with the detachable showerhead. I like how the lockers have locks built into them. But the benches are right in front of the lockers which is good in theory but in application, means having to move one's stuff when some needs to access their locker. They have a Total Body Enhancement Machine and they have Hydromassage Beds and Loungers. I don't use the tanning equipment so not sure what the set up is there. read more

I was told to walk in last year to decide if I wanted to set up a membership there again. I asked if I could just walk around and look to make my decision and was told no I had to wait for someone to show me around. I waited for an hour and no one ever showed up so I walked out. I decided to try again this year by calling first to set up an appointment and I was not allowed to do so. I'm not going to waste another hour of my time sitting there, waiting for someone to show me around, so I will go with a different gym. I have been with Planet Fitness for 10 years and sadly this month will be my last month. I have been coming to this gym almost a year and in the last 5 months they continue to have issues with their computer where your unable to purchase anything such as water. Today I went in the same thing;- computer down unable to get a water. I asked to speak with the manager hoping to get some reassurance or a complimentary water and also offer some suggestions because it's an extreme inconvenience to have to leave go buy a water then come back when you have a limited time to work out. As I questioned how I could get a water he shrugged his shoulders and walked away as I was in mid sentence saying the computers were down. This is the type of behavior I will not tolerate when spending my money at an establishment. The lady at the front desk was nice but the manager's behavior unacceptable. Not a fan of the new Champaign location. The location in general just sucks. The set up is kind of weird. No standalone red light total body machine. Weeks after opening still no wifi and the house music is for 9 yr olds. Still no paper towles and garbage not picked up. Young employees just stand at the desk and talk about how it's not making any money and could care less. The store is ran by, Black Duck partners #262-812-9051 that runs almost 120 stores. There is no structure to this place and half the equipment is used. The only reason not to go to Crunch next door is that Crunch is busy and PF never is. I've been going to PF all over for at least 10 yr maybe more. The worst employees are at Champaign IL PF, Urbana is better, Bloomington, Peoria, East Peoria,...great work Champaign. I'd rate it negative if i could but since you more or less have the place to yourself i'll go for now and take a Jam box from the 80's to drown out that horrible house music. read more

Can the staff please stop laughing, talking, cursing and hanging out for just a few minutes to walk around the gym to restock the cleaning supplies? By now, all of the employees should be well aware of the after-work/weeknight rush. There's literally, 5 employees at the front desk and NO ONE can be bothered to replenish the paper towels? What a joke! Last week one of the guys was reciting a joke and yelling expletives at another staff member! Right in front of members?! Meanwhile, we have to wonder to other cleaning stations to wipe down the equipment because the paper towels were finished off 20 minutes ago. If the staff, which seems to be too many per shift, could actually do their jobs instead of socializing and flirting with each other, this gym wouldn't be such an awful experience. I've spoken with several other members who all stated they'd soon be leaving and heading to a rival gym nearby. I think I'll follow them because this place is pitiful at this point! read more

I have been to this gym twice so far and both times were good experiences. Seeing the no judgement signs all over really helps with confidence especially since I haven't worked out in about two years. The staff that I have met there have been super chill and just seem to radiate some amazing vibes that just make you feel welcomed. Then we got the workout equipment itself. It's easy to use, you can download an app and request songs (even though it's seriously missing some knarly bands) and as I said NO JUDGEMENT. The massage chairs and hydromassage is a blessing as well, warning though, legs will feel like jelly when you get off it. read more

The new employee (I think his name is Dustin) is very weird. He makes everyone uncomfortable and will chase after you outside if your log in doesn't have a picture.Once I called the gym to ask what time they closed and he would not tell me unless I told him if I was a member already and my name. He told me that because my planet fitness app still shows up as my home gym that I used to go to about 15 months ago still shows up and if we don't change it I'll get charged $5 every time I scan in. So what did I do? I went to the other planet fitness. And they didn't care about it..... I've been going to planet fitness in Wisconsin,Chicago and Indiana the past year and no one has ever cared but this guy. Anyone with an iq higher than a 6 will know that he's doing way to much. I've been coming here over a year now and consistently have a good experience. Most of the staff are super helpful. I've been going to the classes lately and those are a lot of fun. As someone else noted below, they are cleaning the place all the time so it always looks great. And there are no hidden fees - I even upgraded and later downgraded my membership and the only fee was my normal monthly payment. If you just want an inexpensive gym where you can get in a great workout, PF fits the bill. read more

11/7 7:30pm I am reconsidering my blackcard membership with PF after an encounter with one of the staff members. Malik?/the guy working the front desk (obviously was hating his job and didn't want to be there) was very condescending and rude as hell when I tried to FINALLY pay for the bottled water that I grabbed when I walked in the door of the gym. I attempted to pay for the water multiple times during the checkin process but it was never done because the staff members were very busy scanning cards. Malik gave me a dirty look and was extremely rude making me feel like I was stealing from the gym. Instead of doing all that, he should've thanked me for being honest. Malik, you need to calm down with your disgusting rude attitude, I obviously can afford my gym membership per month, what makes you think I can't afford a $1 bottle of water???? Please learn the basics of customer service and drop that horrible attitude. People come to PF to better their health and dealing with rude customer service reps was NOT part of my gym agreement. read more

I've been five times and am about done with it. They purposely want to keep giant, hulking meat heads out, which is good, but they do it by restricting equipment that even non-meatheads use. Let me illustrate this in the cons and then I'll move onto the pros. Cons - There's no long barbell, the type you would see someone doing a deadlift with. The dead lift is used by all athletes and is a great exercise for everyone. This also means one cannot do a bench press, unless it's on a smith machine. There are many exercise to do with a long barbell, but the long barbell isn't there specifically so meat heads don't sign up. - The short barbells (shoulder width ones,) only go up to 60 pounds. That is not enough weight. -No medicine balls or kettle bells. -No resistance bands allowed, and you aren't allowed to bring them in. These are great for hitting alot of different areas. -Too many of the same type of machine. There's a whole wall dedicated to hip abduction/aduction, why? -Many of the machines you do want to use are in the "30 minute Circuit Training" area. You're not supposed to enter this area if you aren't there to do the whole 30 minutes. -You're not allowed to bring in hand straps. The rationale being you shouldn't be using weight heavy enough to use them? What if you have weak wrists? -They offer Pizza Monday to "keep people coming in." This makes no nutritional sense what so ever. They sponsor "The Biggest Looser?" - No Towels provided. This irks me more and more as I was accustomed to it at my last place. - No place should advocate UV tanning. -They don't allow personal trainers Pros - It's 10$ a month with no early termination fee -Good AC -Plenty of cardio! -Plenty of Ab stuff... New people to fitness irrationally love tons of ab equipment, and Planet Fitness obliges this wayward thinking. They should use the floor spaces for better machines or a squat rack. Planet Fitness is a gym for those who don't want to be intimidated by muscle beach freaks who want to rip your head off. That's noble, but they dumb down the options so much that they eliminate even the midrange people. What's left is a place for a person who want's to get fit, but isn't given the tools to do it in. read more

Honestly, I don't get why this place gets ripped a new one on here. It's not terrible by any means. It can be argued that the staff isn't friendly I suppose. However, personally, when I go to the gym, I'm not there to talk to anyone either. The place is clean and it works. Granted, I'm not a workout fiend. I just want to run through their 30-min circuit, run on a treadmill, ride a bike, use the elliptical or a combination of said things. In comparison, it's not the nicest gym in the area, I get that. The current gym I go to. It's hard to beat the $10 a month when it comes to gyms. Also open 24 hours so you can gym when you want. There's about two of every machine and plenty of treadmills too. The only problem I really have is the amount of people who are on their phone but not using the machine they are at. Makes it difficult to use many of the machines. read more

READ THEIR POLICIES!! They make it easy to join and it sounds like a deal $10 per month, but then hit you with an annual membership regardless of when you start. Then to get out of membership you have to go into your gym or send a letter via post office mail! If you try to close your membership even one day after annual membership, you still pay and they inform you of their policies then. No local accountability and set up of management that claim that can't help you. Just bad business and no honesty, just policies that are aimed to profit with regard to members....they want turnover and profit off of it. Go to a different firm that is locally owned and local accountability- not a bunch of managers that hide behind false policies. I live in Urbana and drive to Champaign location. All though they are sometimes minimally staffed, which makes sense, the team is always friendly and by gosh, always cleaning. Kudos to the team for staying busy because there is some serious down time there when most folks would be on their cell phone ignoring members. Locker rooms clean. Machines rarely out of order. Paper towels and sani spray stocked. Impressive for 10-20 bucks/month. The only thing I've experienced is management could step up their hand soap game bc they run low on soap in the dispenser and buy bottles in the women's locker room. That's all I got! read more

This is a cookie cutter gym (think Walmart) but it's close and it meets my needs, However, we realized the gym had been taking money out of two separate accounts. My wife called on a few occasions and NEVER got back to us. Finally through email, they expressed do to the amount of time it took us to notice the mistake they would not reimburse us. FRADULANT . Overall, a decent gym experience with some important caveats. First, the (very) good: 1. A large, conveniently located, inexpensive place to workout. The basic gym membership costs ten dollars a month, plus a $1 one time sign-up fee. Yes, this gym is very affordable. (There is also a $29 a year fee that is first charged on September 25th (I think), so if you want to check out the gym for the summer simply cancel before then.) The Meh: 1. The cardio equipment that they have seems to be decent enough quality. However, cardio equipment only includes (many) treadmills and ellipticals, alongside a few stationary bikes. I was disappointed that there were no stair climbers. 2. There are dumbbells that range from 5-75lbs. There are many smith machines, but that is the only place to do any exercises requiring barbells--squats, bench press, etc. They make a big point about not catering to "bodybuilders" (see: "the bad"), but that means a lot of standard weight lifting equipment is not available in the gym. In addition, there are no medicine balls or jump ropes. 3. Checking-in is a little annoying. Being a misanthrope I prefer as little contact with people as possible. I'd prefer to be able to simply swipe the membership keychain card on the way in. Instead, you show a staff member the number written on the card and they look you up. I know, 5 seconds of additional human interaction isn't a big deal, that's why this is in the "meh" and not "bad" category. The Bad: 1. There are parts of the "planet fitness" experience that I like, especially the focus on being welcoming to people who are very out of shape and would like a comfortable place to begin a new fitness regimen. However, by fostering the idea of inclusiveness, they make a big point about this place not being welcoming to bodybuilders or "lunk heads". To this point, they have placed a "lunk alarm" near the free weights, which I understand will sound if a person is grunting while lifting or dropping weights. While me and my slim frame have absolutely no worry of ever setting off such an alarm, it just seems counterproductive to enact a ban in the name of inclusivity. Any serious weight lifter won't be interested in this gym because of its lack of equipment, which is fine, but does planet fitness really have to go out of its way to make so-called "lunks" the bad guys? 2. Perhaps more importantly, while it is great to make people who probably never belonged to a gym feel welcome and excited to begin getting in shape, there is a real lack of fitness knowledge and gym etiquette. (Perhaps this is true of most gyms, but in the few times that I have gone it seems more prevalent here.) I don't know if there are restrictions due to legal reasons or what, but it would be nice if the staff could be more hands on, offering tips to people who look lost, are performing exercises with really bad form, or are grabbing too heavy of weights. At a minimum, I'd like to see a few signs put up that explain that you are expected to wipe down the equipment you use with disinfectant. 3. Finally, as far as I can tell, the biggest selling point of the "black card membership" that costs $20/month is that it includes free unlimited tanning. Why on earth does a fitness place promote tanning? I just don't understand why someone would like cancer with their workouts---okay I'll try and not trip as I get off the soapbox. read more

When I lived in Champaign I had 2 memberships. One at PF and the other at another commercial gym. I used PF for late night workouts and cardio, while I used the other gym for heavy lifting and deadlifts. A lot of the fitness "purists" don't like PF because of the smith machines and limited free weights. I look at it this way: if your goal is to become the next Ronnie Coleman, this isn't the place for you. And to be honest, neither is any other commercial gym. However, if your goal is general health and fitness, PF is fine. The staff are friendly and the bathrooms are clean. This is the perfect gym for people like me who get off work during the late evening, when most other gyms are closed. Oh, and have some freaking discipline and say "no" to the pizza and candy! I recently transferred to the Hadley, Mass gym, hopefully that gym is just as great as Champaign's! read more

Jumped onto the black card membership deal and liking it so far. Coming from UIUC with the ARC and CRCE, this gym obviously isn't on the same level I'm used to, but I was looking to pay less than $30 a month for a gym membership. There are always free machines (bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, etc.) and the weight area usually isn't too full. For an average, 20-something woman, I don't mind the weight selection and definitely don't mind the "lunk alarm". Part of the reason why I didn't like the college gym was the cocky lunks that would prowl around, glaring at girls for venturing into the weight areas. I like the 12 min ab circuit and 30 min express workouts they have as well. This place is perfect for those who just want to keep fit, possibly lose a few pounds, and tone some muscle. The fact that it's always open is really nice too (I work multiple jobs so it really comes in handy with my schedule). I see it as an added bonus that I can use the massage beds and chairs, RLT booths, and tanning beds for free (part of the black card membership). I only wish there were aerobics classes, but not a lot of gyms in my budget do. If you're interested in trying it, the basic membership is $10 a month (plus startup fee) and has no commitment. If it sounds like a good fit for you, you don't have to commit for a full year. read more

I like planet fitness and like working out and tanning here but lately when I come in on my lunch break to tan I go to lay down in the bed and it won't turn on. I have to put all my close back on and go back out to the front desk so they actually put the time in. It's annoying and I shouldn't have to do this. It happens a lot now. I've been a member nearly since they've opened. Price is great, equipment is just what I need to get in a good workout, and the tanning is a plus. Lately though, the staff has gone extremely down hill. They aren't friendly, they don't smile, and just don't seem happy to be there. Multiple times lately their efficiency on tanning has been lacking. I have sat & watched employees stand around while people were waiting to tan while tanning beds were open & waiting to be cleaned.... Lastly, I came in to work out today. Checked in, signed in to tan while the assistant manager was working with someone else. After she was done with the individual she was helping she just simply walked away without greeting me or to check me into tanning. Now that is just simply rude. In any business you greet someone that is in front of you whether it be, "I'll be with you in a moment!" Or ,"someone will be right with you." If you don't like your job or people...get a new one!! read more

The customer service and the cancellation process at planet fitness is terrible. I asked the staff to process a cancellation and they told me I need to speak with the general manager. I left two messages within a week for the general manager and both were unreturned. Apparently, they wont allow customers to cancel their memberships without appearing in person and signing a cancellation notice. In todays busy environment, its not always easy to make a personal visit for a cancellation. I am convinced their policy is cumbersome intentionally in an effort to continually collect the membership fee. Unfortunately, it has gone on for a couple months. read more
