We have been members since Planet Fitness opened in Groton next to Big Y - many years! For the past month or so, the number of machines out of service is 2-4 times as many as in past years. And the same machines visit after visit, indicating a lack of attention by management. I am wondering if the recent $2 million fine for the owner of this PF and 139 others for fraudulently obtaining payroll relief during the pandemic is causing the owner to shortchange basic maintenance. The timing of this neglect is bad as there is a normal spike in membership and usage after the holidays at the same time there are fewer machines available. I've read the response on Google from the owner and note that I have spoken to staff multiple times, not manager as she seems to be avoiding the facility the past couple of months, in contrast with the past when she was there almost every visit. Staff told me that equipment under warranty and waiting for manufacturer to come and fix. CAN'T BE TRUE: In the past an employee of the chain was there regularly fixing equipment, but haven't seen him in a long, long time. Re Warranty - NOT CREDIBLE - equipment has been there for several years, well beyond any likely warranty. None of this, the owner's answer, staff responses, absence of manager gives me any hope that things will get fixed! read more

I go to all the plant fitness within a one hour distance from my house, so there's four that I go to because I like being in different atmosphere. Out of the four that I go to, the Groton Planet fitness is my favorite. It's the cleanest and the staff are very professional. I go there all different hours because my work is inconsistent so I try to get gym time in when I can. I've seen the supervisor inspecting equipments, staff actually giving tours of the facilities (when I asked another Planet Fitness location for a tour, he stood in one spot half heartedly telling where things are), staff at Groton clean often, the ladies bathroom is clean, staff giving customers information, and they greet you. Other gyms, not going to say which one, the counter hasn't been cleaned in the ladies room and I see hair particles everywhere, the counter looked greasy, no clue why it's greasy, could be hair products or lotion, the bathroom doesn't have toilet paper, soap runs out. You don't see those issues at the Groton planet fitness. I feel comfortable putting my things on the counter as I get ready to work out. One time the paper towel dispenser was slow coming out, the next time I went there, it was replaced or they fixed it. (Attentive to maintenance) I still go to other locations because the equipments are different and I like change oddly enough but overall- hands down to the Groton Planet Fitness team for taking such good care of this location. I appreciate the cleanliness, professionalism, and that you guys create a welcoming environment for members. Thank you Groton team. read more

A truly evil company currently in violation of the FTC's "click to cancel" regulation which went into effect May 2025. This location is particularly filthy even compared to the Waterford location, though the poor state of the facilities and layers of grime everywhere do mean you'll never have to wait for a machine to free up, since there are rarely more than a dozen people in the building. read more

I work in New London and live in Branford and sometimes just find that I won't make it to the gym after work so I am trying to at least go and walk the treadmill for 30 mins on those days. I've been to the old Groton location and now this new location just down the road and love the new location! They moved and opened up just about a year ago maybe a little more so the gym still is fairly new. New equipment, it's clean, lots of equipment. What I also love that I wish my gone PF would get is the red light therapy machine. So sometimes I come here just for that. The staff is friendly, helpful and welcoming. I love that with my membership with PF I can go to another one if I know I'm not gonna get to my home location. I feel like I really get a lot for my money. read more

The hell with this place. This company takes all your information. Not only do they ask for your card number but, they also REQUIRE you to give them your account number and your routing number. Not to mention you have to have a photo on your profile even if you are already paying. They do not stop asking you for it to the point that they will not let you in. To cancel is a whole other process. You have to physically go in and sign a paper in order to cancel. My experience with planet fitness is not a good one. They just suck ass. Now they have all my information and I cant even use the gym that Im paying for just because I don't want them to have my photo in their system. Been coming back to PF since mid-Aprill 2023. The Groton location is AWESOME! It's a huge location with all the machines, always clean and constantly kept clean by the amazing staff! I always enjoy being sooo warmly welcomed and treated by Darius, Nya and new staffer, Kobe. You guys rock! You guys work hard to keep the gym nice AND all staff have been friendly and super helpful. I'm not one to complain, EVER. But the management here is HORRENDOUS! I can confidently say Michelle is the RUDEST most unwelcoming person I have ever come across. I have reached out to many of my friends, family, and even co workers in hopes she was just having a few bad days but to my surprise they have ALL had very similar experiences. If it wasn't for Waterford's amazingly attentive and welcoming staff I would no longer be a member. I was also noticing some pretty faithful Planet Fitness members randomly disappearing! I've run into some of them through work only to hear they've been banned for something as little as carrying a gym bag with them!!! This is all extremely unfortunate due to the Groton location being extremely convenient for me being right next to my work but The attitude that I have experienced on MULTIPLE occasions has left the WORST taste in my mouth and So long as Michelle is management at the Groton Planet Fitness I will never be returning. I would leave a 0 if I could. I cancelled my membership in January. I went inside and spoke to a team member to ensure that my membership was cancelled. The team member said my membership was canceled I was all set and I would no longer be billed. Apparently Planet Fitness was still taking money out of my account after I canceled my membership back in January. It is now June. I will NEVER join this gym again. read more

I just relocated back from NYC. A friend tells me they have a deal "Pay-upfront" she has been a member a long time loves the manager etc; I go with cash and just want to sign up. It was Aug 30, 2018, I get told "sorry it expired yesterday" Ok. I ask how much up-front for the "new membership" I get told sorry you cannot pay the year up-front? Cash really? Been a member on and off at Planet Fitness in the state of CT for over 10 years and because I upgraded last November I am stuck in contract in the midst of a pandemic and expected to pay a cancellation fee or freeze my account month to month and wait for it to be safer....not acceptable. Not a way to treat a long time customer. If you were smart you'd let me cancel cause I would've most likely been coming back but after this time I will NEVER go to a planet fitness again. Manager is rude here too. Many times while I was actually using the gym I would have concerns about machines that went undocumented cause the manager hires friends and friends kids that don't care about their jobs. Couldn't tell ya now cause I haven't been since February but honestly this place is a scam. Damn shame they're making life more stressful during this time. Plenty of room. 6 Smith Machines for squatting, which was great. Honestly, you can't beat it for the price imo.

None of the photos dated 12/12/2013 are of this location. They have no tanning beds, only 4 stand up booths. Max time is 10 min per 24 hrs. The gym is much smaller than the pictures here show. The hours are frustrating, 7am-7pm on weekends and open 24 hrs from Mon morning to Friday at 9pm. Since most of my time off is on the weekend, I wish it was open later than 7pm. read more

I've been to a few different PF's & this one is the smallest I've seen.. Even from others I've driven by. The stand up tanning beds are... Different... from what I'm used to. I got a chicken coop feel being inside of it. The staff is friendly and helpful when you ask the right question to the right one. Though I'd rather make the 13 minutes drive to the one in Waterford after being here. read more

So they just recently opened their new location next to Goodwill and it's awesome. Wow, what an upgrade from the tiny big y location. After walking around in shock the first couple minutes I came to the section of where I typically spend most of my time; the free weight section. Or what looked to be a resemblance of free weights. There were no bench presses, incline, squat rack, leg press, etc. I was like, wtf... after talking with a couple members who were thinking same thing, I asked front desk why their was no free weights other than basically dumbbells. I was thinking maybe they just haven't arrived yet or something. They said that basically bench presses especially were too dangerous and that planet fitness is steering away from free weights and that kind of dangerous exercise equipment and that's why everything is basically tension strength and Smith machines... I can understand that planet fitness is designed to focus on being less intimidating, more inviting to the average joe who is going to only come one month out of the year and still collect their $10 but this is absurd. How does any fitness center take away the top fundamental exercise just because a couple of knuckle heads MAY try and lift more than they can handle without a spot! Do you know how many treadmill injuries there are; I don't but sure as shi# it's probably more than benching. It's too bad, wait so long for your gym to finally be updated and they remove free weights from the program. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Guess no need for your stupid lunk alarm; (that in 5 years I've never seen go off)there's nothing to drop or grunt about. Very disappointing; going to have to go to renegade which is kind of the opposite side of the spectrum. PF bring the free weights back! read more

Improvements to cleanliness noted. Shower curtains are replaced a bit more frequently. They do have issues with leaking ceilings throughout the gym and overcrowding of machines doesn't allow much room for floor (ab) work. Staff is super friendly now. Still a good deal, although Renegade just lowered their prices to compete and a nicer facility, from what I have heard. read more

I had a fairly decent experience until the very end. It seemed like everyone was copacetic until I had a billing question. Then things went amiss. I don't regret my decision to end my membership, I just wish it didn't feel forced. Then again "as I was told" () there was nothing they could do for me on a certain issue. read more

I have been a member with this PF for over 10 yrs, and the newer manager has made it almost impossible to continue coming in. She is rude, and does not honor constructive suggestions. It was bad before, but now it is impossible to actually work out with any type of logistical program. The equipment is rather whimsically locked up with no rhyme or reason, now that everyone must wear a mask 100% of the Time one would think, that would be a compensating control but no. The air is turned off, while everyone is masked, it becomes unbearable and the condensation becomes extremely hazardous, quite surprised it has not been shut down by health and safety regulations alone. I am done with this lady, it rather pay more and get the respect and safe welcoming environment. read more

I got a bill after I canceled and they used a different routing number than they usually do so if I had blocked them, it would still go through. How shady. So basically their cancellation policy (after the 1 year contract is over) is basically designed to charge the customer an extra month membership. You may see the bill on the 18th, but in fact they charge you if your account is active on the 10th. Also you have to either go to your home gym or send a certified letter. This means that if you moved you have to give it another week or so for the mail to arrive to be safe on top of that. On the other hand I can go to any branch of my bank and do anything with my account there. I even signed my apartment lease online. Planet fitness though structured their cancellation policy in a way to make it more likely they will get an extra months bill in and try and hide behind the fact they need a signature and don't even try and defend why you can only cancel at your "home gym" the gym you signed up at. It's really just a ploy to get an extra months bill on people that move. Then as I noticed, they will use a separate account to bill people that recently canceled in case the person tried to stop payment. What a shady business. I have to now cancel my checking account and move my money into a new account to protect myself in case they try and charge me again next month. I have heard stories about people being incorrectly charged for months after cancelling. read more

Planet Fitness in Groton Ct is a Terrific Gym. It is very clean and well run. The employees are very friendly and warm. Just wish they would have a music channel on there new Tvs! They do have new Treadmills and Bikes as of August 1st. They are very nice. read more

This was the weirdest gym I've ever been to. It's small, smelly, and the color scheme is jarring. I was never able to use the free-weight section because it was tiny and always full. There are a ton of cardio machines, which were never even close to all occupied. The treadmills often seemed to be in disrepair - many of them had broken TVs, and none of the TVs were adjustable. The weirdest part was that they had days where they would offer junk food like pizza and cupcakes. Huh? At a gym? On the plus side, membership is pretty cheap, the hours are great, and the staff is friendly. I also really liked that they gave you the option to have a membership which you can cancel at any time for an extra $5 a month. At many other gyms, once you sign up you are stuck for a year. read more

I don't care about the facility itself, but just try to cancel your membership! They kept charging my checking account after doing everything they said to do. I finally called the bank and had them blocked, (interestingly, the bank person said she had the same problem with them when she tried to cancel her membership) but they then started charging my credit card! The credit card company said they can't block them, but can only keep taking the monthly charges back every month. Looking this up online I see that this is their general tactic when people try to cancel. This is why they won't take a check or cash for a membership -you have to give them access to your account numbers so they can keep charging you. Planet Fitness is a great value for the money. However, the shower curtains be nasty - especially in the women's locker room. I think they are trying to grow an entire colony of mildew and I'm worried the colony is going to start migrating to my vagina, et. al. For as much flak as Planet Fitness gets around the country, it deserves every single bit of it. I don't really get the concept of the corporation, it seems really stupid to build a fitness franchise around a community that seems to only kind of like fitness? Either way I have been a member of two different Planet Fitness locations only because of the close proximity of the gyms relative to where I live. I have never actually heard the lunk alarm go off, nor has anyone ever said anything to me about my workouts or anything. The way the equipment is laid out is definitely a nuisance, and designed by someone who doesn't lift a lot or never has. Really to not have a weight tree is kind of ridiculous. The weights are hung on the squat rack, incline bench, and leg press. Which is great, but the two bench presses on the sides of the incline bench don't have weights, so you are going behind someone doing reps on incline, or leg press, or squats, which to me seems more dangerous than unjudgemental. The machines themselves don't go up to a very high weight, so if you were pretty big and strong I'd probably shy away, also the dumb bells only go up to 75 pounds. There is only one pull up and dip station, but 3 cross cable type machines, putting pull up bars or purchasing ones with pull up bars on them would have bumped your pull up stations to 4. There is more than enough cardio machines here as with every Planet Fitness I have been to, and a 30 minute workout zone. Don't know why they needed an area dedicated to that, looks like another poor corporate decision as I have seen it elsewhere in other Planet Fitness locations. There is a core area separate from the weights and cardio machines. I have noticed when it gets busy after working hours it gets pretty steamy and gross, I don't think the ventilation system is all that great. All in all it has most of the things you would need in a gym, I guess it really depends on the staff on how far they want to push the corporate mantra, in which case here less is definitely more. read more
