Lousy gym, poor equipment, unhelpful trainers and they require all your personal info to even look at the equipment. Not recommended.

Have been there for nearly three months now going in almost daily at different times of the day. Staff has been helpful and friendly. Equipment is clean and works well, and has recently expanded. Traffic tends to be light in the gym, so little to no waiting for equipment. Gym goers are also respectful and take care of equipment, so a good environment. read more

I had previously been a member of a much more expensive gym in Lawrence. I was surprised to find how much equipment Planet Fitness has and with much lower monthly membership dues, so I switched. I am very pleased. I have never had to wait to use a machine here, since there are so many machines. But it is now summer with most of KU's students out of town. I hope when the students return, I still will have easy access to all of the equipment. Since KU has its own gym for its students, perhaps Planet Fitness will not become crowded, when they return. If you need tennis courts, a swimming pool, multiple personal trainers (they have one trainer for classes), or a juice bar, you will need a more expensive gym. Since I have no need for them, I am happy not to have those expenses included in my monthly membership dues. Unfortunately this gym does not have the Hoist Roc-It machines, available at the Genesis West gym. Personally I think those machines are the best. But Planet Fitness has more than enough alternatives to compensate for that deficiency. read more

I hate the heat of summer. It's stifling and sticky for me. The work around for me is Planet Fitness because then I can walk in comfort. The only reason I get a temporary membership is so I can use the treadmill to walk. I don't use any of the other machines, I haven't used the bathroom there and I am in-and-out quickly. Every staff member I have encountered has been very helpful and pleasant. They showed me what I needed to know about the facility. Parking is easy because there is a huge private lot for customers. The prices can't be beat. Right now you can join for $1 and it's $10 a month with cancellation at any time. For my needs... it's perfect. It's a wonderful set up for my summer walking needs. Again.. I don't do the hydra massage (black card membership), I don't do the tanning beds or any of the weight machines. I cannot vouch for them. The treadmills I used have been very clean and I haven't had to wait to use the treadmill. read more

When a customer tells staff that the internet is down, the answer should be "I'm sorry, we'll get right on it", not "we can't reboot the modem because our computers are connected and would have to restart all of them". That's about as lame as the Asst Mgr telling me "we can't turn the fans off/down, it's policy" when a disabled veteran with exercise induced asthma exacerbated by cold air blowing on ME politely inquired. I like the amount of machines they have and how spread out everything is. I've never had to wait for a machine or felt crowded by anyone else, which is a great plus! The staff is friendly and there are plenty of machines available. It seems they have lost many customers to Crunch. They are about to lose one more. I REALLY like Planet Fitness in general but they insist on blasting music 24/7. Almost everyone listens to headphones but for some reason they insist on blasting music for the 1% that actually like it. It's impossible to listen to podcasts or watch a movie while on the exercise bike. I have mentioned it many times and they aren't going to change. Really ridiculous because I have asked a lot of people how they feel about it and they feel exactly the same. Maybe that's why everyone is leaving. For the love of GOD turn that crap off. While their introductory rates are quite low, I first experienced multiple problems when I saw that they had charged my debit card almost $200.00 more than the stated rate. Then, I was trying to shower one afternoon & saw realized they didn't have soap in the shower stalls. As an elderly woman, I had to repeatedly & precariously creep across the wet floor to get soap from the sinks by the bathrooms. I fell 3 times in the process. After coming out of the shower, I noticed that a Planet Fitness employee was grooming herself in the mirror and saw me fall repeatedly. I asked her why there was no soap in the showers. She told me that it wasn't her problem, I should bring my own and if I fell that was no big deal. I was furious! As i was getting dressed, but afraid to move from the bench (because I didn't want to fall again), i threw a Q-tip towards the trashcan but missed. The young employee accused me of attacking her and trying to hurt her. I honestly, could do nothing but laugh. It seemed beyond absurd & not worthy of a response. She stormed out of the ladie's locker room, called the police and as I was finishing getting dressed, 2 armed police officers appeared in the locker room. I was stunned. Given that the entire incident was beyond bizarre, unprofessional, a bit cruel & sadistic, I simply asked for the officer's badge numbers, requested a copy of the recorded dialogue that they were recording & asked to be handcuffed as they escorted me out of the facility. I also asked to speak with the young woman making various false accusations about me so that we could have an opportunity to engage in civil dialogue, clear up any misunderstandings & participate in what most would consider reasonable conversation. However, the officers denied my requests (both for civil dialogue & handcuffs) and escorted me to the front door. I asked them if they wanted to follow me home since I was such a 'perceived threat'. I also told them that they needed to give me a ticket since my license plates had expired. I reminded them that they are public servants who are employed by the citizens they are hired to protect & that they cannot arbitrarily decide law & justice. At this point, they were so clueless, angry & flustered, they demanded i leave the premises. WOW! I wonder what good old Lawrence KS law enforcement & little fragile 19 year old employees would do if something really serious happened. I sure wouldn't want to ever interact with them again. I've been a member since March 2019 and I absolutely LOVE it! Love the staff & the atmosphere. I'm more of a machine user than free weights so variety of machines is a major plus for me. I've read several other reviews and I'm not sure if they are plants from competitors because I haven't had any of those issues and I go at least 6 times a week! I watch shows on my phone with no problem from the music in the gym and I haven't had issues with the internet except for last May when the tornado hit. Great place, great price, and I've been to both Genesis & Crunch. PF is it for me! read more

So I wanted to redeem my Planet Fitness points for a drink, and this employee who's name is Logan told me exactly this: "you gotta use like an app for that " he seemed rather annoyed when I asked to redeem my points! A few months ago I joined this gym. Overall I am pleased with the cost, equipment and staff. I only have one issue, that is they encourage everyone to clean the equipment after every use which is great. I just wish the restrooms were as clean as the equipment. Every time I go in there the urinals and especially the toilets are just a disaster. It just feels of bacteria and uncleanliness. PF's claims about caring about Covid-19 safety are a complete joke. There's absolutely no mask enforcement whatsoever at the Lawrence location. The unenforced rule is that you don't have to wear your mask when at your station, e.g., at individual weight machine, but otherwise while you're moving around the facility you're supposed to mask up. I just left the Lawrence location and there are several people in there with no masks on walking around (and no visible masks on their person at all). I suspect the problem in part is they only hire college age individuals who don't appear to do anything except stand around at the front desk and chat amongst themselves - never do you see staff members walking through the workout areas to check on things. read more

I absolutely love Planet Fitness! The gym is clean and they habe tons of equipment; even when they are busy I have never had to wait. There is a very wide range of members, I would say when I am there the median age is 40. It's great to see people of all ages, shapes and sizes at the gym. It really helps everyone feel comfortable. I was waiting for someone to pop out and say "SURPRISE" you've been punked. I planned to meet a friend there at noon. We are both middle aged guys, looking to get back in shape. The location was convenient and neither of us was concerned about the cost if it was clean, etc. I'm handicapped and use a cane. In the entrance are metal chairs and tables with membership info. I sat and waited, and although there were three staff standing there nobody came over. My back is fractured and started to hurt. I saw some empty comfortable chairs in some "member black card" area. So I walked up and said to the employees, waiting for a friend to check out membership, broken back, the whole story. Well i can't sit there evidently because I'm not a black card holder. So I paced around flailing my arms around to keep my balance. So went back up and said "how much is the Black Card membership." I said I'm not concerned how much it costs I just want to sit in there. One said "well you don't have to be a Black Card member; any member can sit there." Ok fine I'll pay whatever it is. I asked if I could just join but; no I would have to sign up. I told them I would have to join standing up then because those chairs hurt my back. So I said I will wait in my car then for my friend. Ok. They said. When my friend arrived and I told him outside what happened. We walked in and stood there. Three employees saw us, as they stood behind the counter. They continued talking to themselves while we stood inside the door. We left after 5 minutes. We drove to Anytime Fitness and joined. What a difference. OMG what a difference. Very clean, brand new excellent equipment (the same stuff they have at Genesis), very friendly and approachable staff, nice big fans that keep the place cool. And you can't beat the price! I moved out of state, so I was going to cancel via phone, but was told that the only way I could cancel was to physically send in a letter to cancel, or actually walk in the branch to cancel. Obviously, I couldn't walk in that physical branch, so I will have to send a letter. This is one of those sleazy things they squeeze into your contract to discourage people from canceling so that they can continue to collect monthly membership dues from people that are discouraged from canceling because it is so inconvenient.
