I love this place. I drive over 20 minutes to call this location my home gym. Friendly staff, cleanness gets an A+, spacious floor plan. I never feel like someone is hovering over me , which is nice when working out. Plenty of options in equipment. Clean locker rooms. I really can't ask much more than that. But If i were to recommend one thing, it would be to put mirrors up on the walls in the new addition area. It's nice to be able to watch your form as you do your workouts. They cancelled my membership and banned me after 5 years, for "breaking policy". The policy that I "broke" was leaving my guest unattended at the gym. Their site has a list of policies, and it does not mention this. My guest is an Ukrainian athlete refugee. I originally tried to get him a month-to-month membership for the duration of his visa, but the membership advertised as $10/month comes with an annual fee, apparently. So, they banned a customer that has paid them about $3k over the years over a nonsensical policy that is not even publicly available. read more

I absolutely love this location, it's like a breath of fresh air, the staff is very polite, everyone that comes in they are greeted, even upon leaving, not only that they interact with each other well, and yet remain a professional environment, after meeting the management staff of this establishment I understand why, like priest like people. When your a manager you set the tone for the establishment, which then intern effect the members, after having a horrible experience with another location i thought about canceling my membership, but after walking into this location I had change of heart, and get this the place is clean, at the other location the staff was so rude, refusing to fill the paper towel dispensers, and then get mad at the members when they ask paper towels, I want to say hat's off to the Okemos location, your the best, above all the rest, thank you for being the best part of my workout. I have medical issues, and I have to workout, but coming into a gym where the staff cares, it makes exercising so much easier, I would recommend this location to anyone. read more

I've been to about six other planet fitness locations, and this one is definitely not the best one. The main problem is just the size of the gym, as there is not much floor space, and the rush of people that go before class/work or after in the evening. All of the employees are super nice and answer any questions you have which is great. Definitely try to go on off hours though! They have just added some newer machines over the years, but you can't beat the $10 price. Just be attentive to the yearly fees and cancelation policy!! read more

This gym is frustrating. Three employees working and not one of them knew how to do a home gym transfer. I was interrupted mid workout to be asked to move to the other side of the gym so they could clean. As if the faculty isn't open the other 23 hours of the day to do it. I do not go during the after-work rush...can't comment on that scene. I stop in mid-afternoon and early morning on the weekends...never an issue with crowds or waiting for equipment. This gym is designed for an all-around cardio experience. You can keep your heart rate up from start to finish in here with a nice variety to keep your workouts fresh. I've been weightlifting for two decades and have tried every type of workout routine and machine from Ballys, Gold's, Powerhouse, 24 Hour Fitness...etc. I immediately recognized the fat-burning potential in this gym...if you want to turn every workout into a cardio routine, this is the place for you. There are plenty of Life Fitness treadmills and elliptical machines with flat screens galore. Ipod and headphone jacks in said machines. What is unique here is that they have eliminated the free weight clutter you find in other gyms (Powerhouse in EL for example), and created a circuit training mecca. There are mint condition Hammer Strength and Life Fitness machines, dumbbells, Smith squat/bench racks, two multi-station jungle gyms, two separate circuit zones, and a stretching area. I am not a big fan of the Smith racks because I feel they limit your natural motion. That said, I use dumbbells for all traditional barbell movements (upper and lower body). It's a lot easier on the joints and you can really get a nice negative rep burn during your sets. Bottom-line...you can get a killer workout here with little to no stress. There are other features I have not experienced near the lobby...some sort of relaxation room and tanning. Locker room has been clean and not too crowded. The water bottle refill station at the fountains is very convenient. read more

This is probably the nicest planet fitness that I've been to so far. I visited and used a few in Grand Rapids before I moved to East Lansing, and those hail in comparison to the one in Okemos. The facilities are clean almost all of the time (even after 10pm), I never have to search for a bottle and rag to wipe down a machine, and the staff members have always been friendly to me. The people who are writing negative comments on here are just nit-picky and are probably expecting too much out of a 10 or 20 dollar membership. They should try visiting a few other PF's first before ripping on this one. read more

I'm very upset that the staff at the Okemos location lied to me when I signed up for a membership. They told me my membership would transfer to all locations across the country. They even pulled up a map to show me that when I was away from college I would be able to transfer my membership over Christmas break. I learned yesterday that this is not true and that I will have to pay $5 per visit if I want to continue using Planet Fitness. I am very upset and feel like I was tricked into purchasing a membership. I also called back yesterday to the Okemos location to find out if I misunderstood the policy, but they assured me that I would be able to transfer without any problems. I believe the Okemos location is either A) misinformed B) incompetent or C) purposely lying to consumers to get them to purchase memberships. I am also surprised that Planet Fitness corporate is not willing to do anything to help me out. If you are considering joining this gym, I would tell you to not expect any continuity between gyms and if you ever have a customer service problem you will be severely under-appreciated. Bottom line - Planet Fitness will lie to you and then refuse to provide customer service. Stay away! read more

This club opened the week of Christmas, so less than a month ago. This is a beautiful, large gym that I enjoy and I should note that in my comments below, while true, I do take also take into consideration the fact that they JUST opened and staff is still learning/signing people/working things out during the absolute busiest time of the year for any gym/health club. I transferred my membership from another planet fitness to this new club due to a job change. First of all, its huge with TONS of equipment - all new. I stoppped in the sat after Christmas to work out and had the place to myself. Stopped back again 2 weeks ago, and there were more people here, but club was still only about 25% full (which was nice!). Did not get back again until this week - and it is now about 75% full, but there were still plenty of treadmills, ellipticals, weight machines - there was no wait for anything. The busiest area was the mat room/stretching area (small space anyway) which was pretty full though but I was able to grab a mat and wedge myself in between other folks using mats on the for floor for stretching, situps, pushups, etc. The issue I am concerned about is the traffic jam that occurred every year at my old PF location from Jan-March. My experience as a regular, Jan-Dec committed member, was that you literally could NOT work out Jan-March (between 5-7 pm) due to the "new resolutioners" that clogged the gym/parking lot and then stopped coming all together by end of March. If I could have worked out at a different time I would, but 90% of the time I could not due to extensive work schedule, so would use a couple free weights and a stationary bike I have at home during the week for those 3 months. I love that people want to make a change and adopt a more healthy lifestyle, but my opinion is that a New Year Resolution does not in itself drive the committed change necessary to transform ones physical health. So, at this location I was (and still am) most interested to see if I will still be able to work out at this club, during the next 3 months after work (5:50-7:00 pm), and, so far I can. I don't mind a minimal wait for some machines or a treadmill, but I don't have time to spend over 2 hours at they gym trying to work out. So I am hoping this time next month I am still able to get in (maybe I should not be doing this review!). I also realize that after this club is established this may not be the case at all this time next year. So it goes. For now it is an excellent deal. There seem to be a number of people who do realize that PF gyms need you to clean each peice of equipment immediately after you use it, however, I see many people not do this. There are a gazillion paper towel & trash stations located all over the gym (what do people think these are for??) allowing for you to easily wipe down equipment and then toss paper towel in trash - I wish staff would be better about enforcing this but they are super busy signing people up. (Each visit I have had to seek out the attention of a front desk staff so I can give them my member number, which makes me wonder could I have just walked in and worked out without being an actual member?) Anyway, if you work out here, at least for now, I would recomment that you wipe down equipment before and after you use it to limit exposure to germs/other's sweat/coughing/sneezing on equipment etc until things calm down & staff can enforce this better. Last point at my previous PF gym there were signs all over stating "cell phone use prohibited on gym floor" I have not noticed those signs here and have noticed people yacking on cell phones on gym floor/mat stretching area forcing others in the vicinity to listen to their BS conversations - hopefully another thing that will be addressed when the dust settles on this new PF location. read more

I signed up at this location and going home for the summer (to california), i chose the black card. I went to the planet fitnesses around here (in california) and hardly anyone cleans up the machine after themselves and the bottles are not even easily accessible (though laziness to walk to the bottles are not an excuse!). It's just the right thing to do, clean up after your mess! The Okemos location has cleaning bottles everywhere and everyone cleans up their machine after use! Going to other locations really makes you appreciate this location. The employees usually aren't sitting around either; they are changing towels out, vacuuming, spraying the treadmills. read more

Lauren, the general manager is the rudest person I have ever had to speak to. She also refused to give me the email for the manager above her. In a time of a pandemic and so many college kids unemployed, one would think there would be a little more empathy. This Planet Fitness has been taking money out of my account since October when I went to another Planit Fitness and am also being charged there. Just beware that this Planet Fitness gets your account information and then doesn't want to stop taking your money. And if you need help with anything, good luck. Despite my better judgement I choose to become a member of this planet fitness and am frustrated that I kept the membership as long as I did. 1. Don't expect to use any cardio machines between 12pm - 7pm. This gym beyond packed during a that time. So if you can go before or after that, then I'd suggest you do it. 2. The staff has no concept of customer service whatsoever. On numerous occasions they were rude, unhelpful and blantantly a group of college kids who care nothing more than to get a paycheck. 3. The "extras" you get for being a 'black card' member are never available for use unless you don't mind waiting 30-45 minutes. Basically, if you want staff to help you out with anything, good luck. I signed up for this gym as it opened beginning of 2014. Only a couple weeks later it is now packed. I've seen other PF locations (in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids) and this one is by far the smallest. At other locations a person has room to maneuver from machine to machine without bumping into other gym goers. The idea of a $10 gym for the masses is good in theory, but the execution requires a lot more square footage than is offered here. This one is 23,000 sq ft I believe, compared to 40,000 sq ft in Grand Rapids location. Feels like I am a crowded farm animal when I go to work out. Think I will cancel and go to a smaller gym with more personal space. read more

I understand COVID threw everyone off. They didn't allow anyone to contact them when COVID started, leaving no email or phone number to get a hold off. 6 months later they started billing me again and I didn't catch it for several months after that. Turns out they sent an EMAIL and because of that they won't issue a refund... an email after 6 months of ZERO contact. Forget the money at this point, it's like $100, this planet fitness is absolutely awful at communication. Even reaching out to the area manager you have to email, they give no phone contact or anything. read more

The Okemos Planet Fitness is quite large, clean, and the equipment is well maintained. I enjoyed my workout there. The locker rooms are clean and overall the facility doesn't smell too sweaty, so that's a plus. The facility is also equipped with hydro massagers, chair massagers and tanning beds. read more

As much as I love Planet Fitness, I would like to make a comment about the use of cell phones in the workout area. On more than one occasion, I note members sitting on machines texting messages to their friends. After waiting several minutes to use a machine, I have reported it to the front desk. I recently changed my home gym to Planet Fitness Okemos and I love it here. This is my favorite location in the Lansing area, mostly because it has a great circuit training set up and the locker rooms are nice and clean. I can usually get on the machines I'm looking for without waiting, unless of course it is really busy! I'd recommend this location if you live nearby! read more

I've been a member of the Okemos PF for about three years. The staff members there are very friendly and helpful. They do a good job of keeping the workout equipment in good working order, and they regularly clean the equipment and floors. Almost all members wipe down the equipment after each use, and staff members resupply disinfectant spray and fresh cloth towels on a regular schedule. Some of the machines that are equipped with TV connections have poor or non-working audio connections, and those electronic connections seem not to receive timely repairs. Also, I've never observed any attempt to enforce the rule to limit cell phone use to the lobby, as members often make such calls in other areas, including the men's locker room. Some members occasionally spend inordinate amounts of time on a single piece of equipment, and those members should consider buying their own equipment for at-home workouts. The men's shower stalls sometimes appear as if they could benefit from frequent disinfecting, a necessity--not a luxury--in such a busy fitness center. More attention should be paid to resupplying the towels in the men's locker room. These rather small shortcomings detract from an otherwise invigorating workout experience. Compared to my previous experience with the gym facilities on the nearby Michigan State University campus, the PF facilities are far superior. Importantly, the membership fee is also more affordable than that for use of the MSU facilities, and much more affordable than the Michigan Athletic Club in East Lansing, although the MAC offers far more programs and other amenities than PF. In my opinion, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and PF is the best value if what you're looking for is simply an authentic workout experience with minimum hassle. read more

Do not put your gym membership money on Planet Fitness and check out Crunch Fitness instead. It's only $19 a month and you get unlimited classes and tanning. Better than the black card. I switched from Planet Fitness after a manager treated me with a blood clot and broken foot. I was admitted to the ER a day before the monthly bill went out and they charged me for the full month and would not let me out of my membership until my dad came in with proof of my hospital visit. That is totally fine I understand they needed proof in order to freeze, but they still charged me for the month because I didn't notify them the day of the hospital visit (because when someone goes to the hospital that is the first thing they think of doing, oh let me call my gym membership). It was really sad because they could have done something, but they just directed me to the manager and she came back with no answers and also made me feel bad about my injury and showed no empathy whatsoever. Luckily the one nice boy who works the front counter was able to put a freeze on my membership after my dad came in with the proof that I was in the hospital. I really appreciated that he helped with my dad because he knew who I was and that I was a committed client for the past three years and was not "lying" or trying to get out of my membership. Sadly once I was approved to workout again I did choose to leave planet fitness because of the treatment I received on this situation. I will say there are a lot of great staff members there who are very friendly and asked about my recovery. It just wasn't enough to keep me there after the treatment from management to keep me wanting my membership. If you are looking for a good gym family for a good price I suggest looking elsewhere because it's not planet fitness. read more

I don't understand all the negative reviews. I joined a little over a week ago as a black card member, and this place is great! Friendly and helpful staff, great machines, very clean. Glad I joined! I'm a widow with a pretty limited income who wants to get out a little and get healthier (and the exercise endorphins help with the grief quite a bit!)--the price was right, so here I am! Love the hydromassage, massage chairs (though the chairs aren't designed for my 5'2" size, it still works for me...my head usually gets the massage that I think is intended for my neck, but I'm good with that since head massages are great, too!), and the total enhancement machine! Won't be using the tanning beds, since I've resigned myself to my northern European pale skin. read more

Although I enjoy this Planet Fitness I have to make a comment about their so called personal trainers. I have not utilized this aspect of my gym membership; however, when I observe the personal trainers at work they do not appear to be doing much. There is a particular personal trainer who is a male, typically has a hat on, and a bro diamond earring who literally could not look more inconvenienced if he tried. During his 'personal training' sessions with one or more people he is always sitting and on his phone. I get that this is a complimentary service, but really they could get someone more engaging. read more

Most of the workers at this location are pretty rude. The look as though anyone talking to them is a bother. One young man in particular gave me so much attitude as i tried to explain why i was signing in for tanning before "checking in" as he and his co-worker so rudely and loudly told me i was doing it wrong. Then, said young man (who was no more than 5'6", looked like early 20s maybe 19, definitely a frat boy-to cool for anyone look to him) literally stared me down and when i told him he didn't have to be so rude and stare me down he said "i can do what i want, this is a no judgement zone"....needless to say i had a few choice words about learning customer service, growing up and so on. Throughout my work out i would notice him once and a while glaring my direction with a dirty look on his face. For its price, you get a decent gym, which brands itself as not gym. For the first month you pay more, though, I guess it's just a nice marketing plan considering that a lot of people lose interest/stop going to gym after a while since their sign up. It has a lot of cardio treadmills. And other stuff that was already mentioned by other reviewers, however, if you're a professional bodybuilder then you should already be aware that planet fitness is not exactly for you. This one, in particular, lacks standing calf raise exercise, and doesn't have free, long barbels so that you'd do standing stance squats with them. But the only incentive for me to leave this feedback here is the lack of feedback at PF. Actually, I could have going to PF, but the point is that I needed to talk about my situation with a superior management there. But there's no information on how to contact them personally. My issue was already talked over with a regular clerk, and that's the point she couldn't do anything. It actually isn't a big deal, but the fact that I was met with total negligence from the PF's customer service has made me leave this comment, I'd have rather left it to the superior management at this particular facility, but they don't have such an opportunity. When I asked for a cancellation form I wasn't even asked for a reason to leave. Well, if you don't care, then I guess, what can I do. I have options and I will go to another gym, in which I won't be ignored, and the management will care enough to listen to me. Compared to other planet fitness gyms this gym is pretty remarkable! The staff is especially friendly and helpful. They do a great job of keeping it spotless and making sure that all of the equipment is working properly. I have noticed that a lot of other locations have run down equipment and machines that are out of order. The tanning beds are super nice too. The locker rooms and bathrooms are always clean and I have never heard of anyone complaining of stolen items. It can get busy during rush hour, especially during the fall and spring semester when MSU classes are still in session, but other than that it's usually not too busy! read more

This place is very welcoming and a great place to get in some exercise. Wish the showers in the locker rooms had doors rather than just curtains so I will probably never shower there, but everything is clean and new. I guess we will see if it stays clean since it just opened less than a month ago. Wish they had towels and that the staff didn't seem like nazis when it came to things like signing up for using the massage bed. Otherwise, plenty of space, wide variety of equipment and good general atmosphere. Glad I joined. read more
