I just moved to Oswego and their is very limited options in public gyms. I chose The Y here bc they…read morehad a pool and swimming is my favorite form of cardio. I come to find out after signing up that the original facility where their pool was located was condemned. They have a deal with the college and the high school for VERY limited periods of time that change monthly. On top of that, the new building is very old and has the cardio equipment in the basement. It's very musty and it smells. After a few times trying to utilize the cardio equipment( bc I wasn't able to make the limited swim schedule times) I became very sore and congested in my chest. I went to my primary care doctor and he prescribed me a nebulizer stating that I should limit the amount of time I'm in that space (aka the basement) Last but not least, they have gym hours that change seasonally and are inconvenient. They are barley open on the he weekends and close either at 6p or 8p during week. I paid almost $160 down and I pay $40 a month to use their gym and it's been a struggle at the very least. I have to add that the women's locker room is not in very good shape either. It's old and small. The staff is friendly for the most part and they have a great children's area for moms who want to work out! They are active with community building events also but I don't have children so it doesn't directly suit me or my life. This YMCA is also privately owned so be aware you cannot transfer your membership to another gym. They do allow five times a month for you to use the Fulton YMCA but my advice would be to just join Fulton and Not waste your time on the Oswego Y. I spoke to Carrie about my dissatisfaction with their gym and she was rude and slightly argumentative when I told her my doctor said the basement was making me sick. She insisted that she had asthma and never has a problem. I had to provide a doctor note to cancel my membership which was extremely inconvenient. Carrie did provide me a fax number to give to my doctor but like most primary care doctors I had to go back to the office for an appointment to receive a script stating I cannot use their gym. This was a very costly experience to say the least.

I prefer not to interact with other people in classes because I don't like to be touched by strangers and they did some partner work, which I did not enjoy. But that's just me and we had the option not to partake in those poses/stretching, so just including as an fyi. Overall, I think this is a great place and I'll be back.

I love yoga and feel if everyone did yoga, we'd have a happier, more peaceful world. Okay, I'll get…read moreoff my soap box and just review the classes. I've taken both Yin and Gentle Yoga here from husband and wife team Linda and Howard. The two of them combined have over 40 years of yoga instruction experience. If you don't know much about different yoga types, yin is about longer held postures that will target joints, connective tissue, and meridians, while Gentle Yoga is about medium-length deep stretches and working on the breath. The classes were great; as I sit in front of a computer all day, yoga is necessary to stretch out the many kinks and tight areas. Both teachers were easy to follow and are good about checking students for proper posture and positions. They also teach Hatha and Vinyasa, Vinyasa Flow. If you are new to yoga or a veteran yogi, you'll enjoy the atmosphere and the classes here. I've heard great things about the Level 1 Taiji/QiGong Movement and Self Healing classes as well, taught here by Geoff on Saturday mornings, a local integrative counselor. I just haven't taken them yet to comment, but wanted to mention them for anyone interested in this type of movement and healing modality. Namaste!
