    Planet Fitness doesn't like "lunks."
    Tamia H.

I had been a member of this Planet Fitness for a couple years before I cancelled my membership last month. What I liked about it was the $10 a month membership, access 24/7 and the free purple ink pens. I never had any problems finding a cardio machine as there are plenty. The free weight area is actually small and, as spacious as this entire facility is, the free weight area could've been expanded. It was so. . .tight. The women's locker room is okay. There are 3-4 showers that get cleaned regularly throughout the day and two changing stalls. The water fountains outside of the locker rooms seem to break down repeatedly. In that case you can a get free bottle of water. Once a month PF has complimentary bagels and the next week they have complimentary pizza- both are one day events. I've only eaten one bagel and one slice of pizza during my entire membership. I give this Planet Fitness at Edgewood Town Center 4 stars, but I give the entire chain 3 stars. Why? I do not like PF's hypocritical "judgement free zone" philosophy. Okay, I think I get it. It's important for someone out of shape to have a safe, supportive environment to work out. But if PF is really "judgement free," why are people who lift weights, wear tanks and drink water called "lunks"? Why is there a "lunk alarm" at the gym? This explains why the free weight area is so small!

Yup, I'm loving it. I've officially been a member for 1 month and couldn't be happier. It's always clean, the staff is pretty down to earth and friendly and I always seem to get the machine I want. While there are no classes, PF supports a no frills policy that seems to speak to all types of folks who, really just want to work out, get healthy, and make positive life choices. Yesterday, while running on a treadmill, I was sandwiched between a 60+ year old fella in Captian Ahab fashion and a woman with sparkly green eyeshadow and a green Christmas tree sweatshirt. In front of me was a cute 20 something gal in a UCLA sweats. Yeah, PF is the epitome of diverse and I absolutely dig it. The tanning "beds" are the stand up kind, which I personally dislike because of the claustrophobic factor. In my opinion, skip them. BUT it's only 19.99 a month for the membership plus tanning, which you can't beat!!

There's a variety of class times to choose from, from early in the morning to late into the evening. The 9:30 a.m. class is my normal class. The workouts are always a fun challenge and there's always different. They combine cardio, weight training and body resistance exercises, and everything wraps up within an hour. Trainers always go over all of the movements, usually with pep and a smile, and will correct you to ensure you have the best form. In the past, I've been a part of big box gyms where you lift and use machines at will. While they're cheap, I made excuses not to go because it was always the same motions. But Pittsburgh FIT has challenged me athletically for the first time in years. There's always the push of trying a little more if you can, but adjusting any movements so things are best for you, too. I love weight lifting, so I usually go heavier for those parts of the workouts, but I have a jenky ankle after a bad sprain last year, so I opt out of box jumps and things that are tough on those joints for something a little less straining. All in all, it's a great place where everyone there wants to see you succeed. Showing up is the first step.

I've been a member of this club, Shape Training, East Pittsburgh (previously Keystone Fitness) for…read more10 years. Shape Training took over two years ago and I'm sorry to say it has gone downhill since. The new focus is personal training and if you don't partake of it, you are simply forgotten and not valued as a customer. When the changeover started and people started complaining I was actually a cheerleader for the new management. I kept telling people I'm willing to give them an opportunity to turn things around. Well, we just finished our 2nd summer without A/C. It was registering 83 degrees inside every day. We were appeased by the placement of 4 fans, which did nothing except blow around hot air. Let me clarify, I'm not adverse to sweating, I've done inferno classes, kickboxing among others in the past, but this was unbearable. For the past two years, we have been told that they are "working" on the air conditioning. With focus being on personal training, new equipment was purchased but unfortunately it didn't meet the needs of the existing customers. The weight machines are nice but you need to change the weights and spend much time looking around the gym for the right sizes. There are only 2 ellipticals; these are in high demand every day and are showing signs of wear. The motorized treadmills were replaced by manual treadmills. After many people complained, 3 motorized treadmills were purchased. The replacement machines didn't happen immediately; it took complaint after complaint over several months. The equipment is not being maintained. One rowing machine has had wires hanging from it since February. It was brought to management's attention in February and as of October, the wires are still hanging. One of the two stationary bikes is making an atrocious noise and was reported back in February. Other pieces of equipment are wearing down. I know some pieces may be old, but you need to study your demographic and usage of the equipment on a continuous basis to keep ALL your customers happy. They have a nice track that I used every day. Walking gave me an opportunity to look around the floor. I saw a lifesaver in the same spot all summer. Unfortunately the gym is not kept clean. For me, the final straw was when there were about 15 people in the gym and then a person came for training. The trainer blasted the music so loud, it actually hurt my ears. I asked an employee if they could just lower the music a bit, she was a foot away from me and had to lean in to ask me to repeat my question. I was told "no", they're training. I'm not adverse to music providing a beat while working out, but ruining ear drums is another issue. I left at that point for the last time. I understand the business end is to make money, but you can't simply focus on one portion and believe that you are meeting everyone's needs. Many people have left Shape Training in the past two years to join other gyms and feel valued as a customer. After desperately trying to keep a positive outlook for the past two years, I have finally joined the ranks and left.

I was an athlete my entire since I was 4....after ending my college career, I found myself lost. WORST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE. About a month ago I took the leap and decided to go in for a consult (Free by the way, with no pressure following) but I met with Martin Heban, who asked me what my goals where, and explained step by step how I can get there, and how SHAPE could support me. Sometimes all it requires to reach your goal, is to take that first step, and I am soooooo happy I did! I now workout there 3-4 days a week, primarily in their classes and obviously take advantage of all of their boot camps and free boxing classes! The support and camaraderie at SHAPE is like nothing you've ever experienced. While visiting my…read morebrother in Pittsburgh, I was having back problems that I can usually alleviate with a trip to the gym. So, when I looked around at all the gyms offered in the city and suburbs, I chose this one because it's in one of the toniest neighborhoods and looked quite sophisticated. Looks are deceiving. This is one of the worst gyms I've ever visited. In fact, it's nothing more than what I call a McGym, which is a facility where someone goes in and dumps a lot of equipment into a big room and calls it a gym, but it lacks the other amenities that make it a true gym. Despite the size of this place, it has no walking or running track, and there is plenty of room for it. They also have no swimming pool despite the fact they actually advertise aqua classes on their website for this specific gym! It has no whirlpool or steam room, which you could find at the dowdiest YMCA in a rundown town. Before I could get my opportunity to sample the gym, I had to listen to the sales pitch from one of their associates. When I ask about a pool, his response was, "Not anymore. Anthropology (a store downstairs) didn't appreciate their things getting wet so we had to take the pool out." Well, I didn't appreciate the glib response and I also didn't appreciate being told that if I joined, I could use the pool at the Bridgeville gym, 25 miles away in the suburbs! So, having no pool or whirlpool, I could only do my usual weight routine for my back problems. After I showered, there were no hairdryers to be found. When I inquired about them at the desk, they told me that most people brought their own. I've never been to a gym in my life where they did not offer hairdryers, and again that includes the seediest of YMCAs. This LA Fitness has a lot of the flaws that many commercial gyms have. The staff pretends to be friendly but comes off as placating and condescending. Hence, I'm wondering why LA Fitness is So expensive when Planet Fitness offers pretty much the same amenities. I am attaching two pictures of their website to show that this location advertises water aerobics after removing their pool. Avoid this gym and go to a Y, where you'll find what you really need.

Highlights: Pros- 1. The instructors- they are friendly and energetic, many take time to encourage class members by name which is real motivation, additionally, they essentially conduct a group personal training session, giving just the perfect amount of personalized attention to ensure perfect form but not so much that you can't go at your own pace. 2. The ambience- the lighting is perfect, dim and cool, the music is great, and the atmosphere is contagious. 3. The results- I get a great sweat every single class, and am seeing and feeling some excellent results, you really can't help but get into shape... and you can do so at your own pace. 4. The cancellation policy- this is definitely a mixed bag, however, knowing I will be charged $12 for a no show or canceling less than 8 hours in advance means when I commit I really commit ( non premier members lose the class, value approx $28). While some people may find this frustrating it is just the extra push I need. Cons- 1. The location- nice spot in the east end but can be a parking challenge 2. The price- I do think it's worth it but at approx $60-$160 a month, it's definitely more than a workout, it's an investment 3. Scheduling- for the most part this has steadily improved and you can count on being able to book two weeks out at 9 pm each evening but sometimes that isn't the case and typically by 5 am the next morning classes are full, I've had to stay up until as late as 1 am to get into a class... or forgotten and been locked out entirely... for $150 a month I almost feel spaces should be guaranteed 4. Technology- sometimes this goes down, once or twice a month since I started, and nothing is done about it... the problem is you then have no record of your workout and the record is a big plus Ultimately, I would highly recommend OTF to anyone who needs an extra dose of motivation, who wants to get fit fast, who struggles to get in a full body burn, who wants to have fun and is ready to invest in themselves!

Josh is extremely knowledgeable about all facets of the body, exercise, gym equipment, and nutrition.  These skills became apparent  when he designed and implemented an individualized training program for me.  He focuses on helping you achieve long-term fitness goals, but adjusts workouts weekly and monthly to meet your particular needs at different stages along your fitness journey.  For example, before I started working with Josh, I had lower back pain that would flair up  from time to time.  Josh has been mindful of my injury history, while modifying workouts, catering to any limitations I might have, so I can continue to progress.  Over the years he has helped me develop a stronger, and more resilient core, which has substantially reduced the frequency of painful back episodes I used to have. Josh is also good at understanding my current mental and physical capacity for training on any given day.  As a result, he is able to  make adjustments to my program which set me up for success, despite work fatigue, or occasional lapses in motivation.  This means he understands when I can be pushed hard, and when I need a lighter day if I'm particularly burned out for other reasons. This has enabled me to maintain my fitness routine during the past 5 years without dreading them.  I enjoy my workouts which hasn't always been the case  with prior training experiences. The Training Revelations studio is great.  The facility and equipment is comprehensive, clean, and orderly.  Because only one client is working out at a time, it reinforces how personalized the experience truly is. I also want to note that during the COVID-19 crisis, Josh has made himself available through video conferencing to help me continue to maintain an exercise routine at home.  I definitely recommend Training  Revelations for personal training! Josh's expertise, and unique approach to training, has allowed me to consistently work out in a way  that is sustainable for the long term.

Before I formally started working with Josh, we talked. Our conversation involved more than collecting medical information and was definitely NOT a sales pitch. Josh actively asked about my goals and fears, and why I wanted to train. He was very clear about what training could and could not do to help me meet my goals, and also what would be expected of me. As far as the inevitable training question--"Does he kick your ass?" Yes, when I genuinely need it.
