Worst customer service I've ever seen. I wouldn't go there again if the clothes were free!! I will be telling others about my experience for a very long time. If there was a option for no stars or even minus stars it would be more appropriate. I purchased clothing for my daughter who couldn't wear items bought- upon my return to store I was unable to return any of the items because 1 shirt had not been rung up on the register by the very person who sold it to me originally?? He made me feel like he was accusing me of shoplifting the items. I said that's ok..... I will never stop telling people about my experience there. came in for the first time yesterday to sell some clothes. i've sold at buffalo exchange and crossroads before, but never at plato's closet. i didn't have high expectations from reading the other reviews on here, but thought i'd give it a try (is there anywhere else to sell in modesto?) i went in around 5pm with two duffel bags of clothes and shoes and luckily, there was no wait to sell. they have you fill out a little card with your information and then tell you your bag will be ready when they write your name on the white board. i perused the store while the buyer looked through my things and like other reviewers, wasn't really wowed by everything they had, but things were reasonably priced and the store was well stocked. i'd say they seemed to have a lot more packed in there than a normal 2nd hand place like buffalo exchange. a little overwhelming, actually. i tried on a few things and then noticed that my bag was ready. i went up to the counter and although there were 3 people working, no one asked me if i needed to be helped. hm. the buyer finally came back and showed me a receipt of the items he would buy from me and how much he would pay for each item. the list is based on their codes and things, so it might be a little hard to decipher, but hey, it was clothes i wasn't wearing anymore anyways. i was glad to see that he bought over half of my things totaling to $38.50. not bad. i should also probably note that they buy for all seasons all the time - i brought in some sandals and shorts which they bought. overall, a decent selling experience and i kind of have an idea of what they're looking for for next time. read more

I've been here a couple of times to get some clothes for my teen boy. He was happy- we got a basically brand new,nice pair of Adidas for $12, a almost new pair of jeans for $11 and a couple plaid type button up shirts on clearance for about $4 each, so we were both happy. I wish they had more men's shoes. I agree that half of their inventory looks pretty shabby - I saw quite a few stained items, which I know is not part of their business plan.- But it is really worth looking through, you will find a good deal! I have found clothing with holes & some stains on them at Modesto Plato's. I have brought in clothing that is excellent condition and some that I never wore and they pass on those items. Then they use the same excuses for not accepting the items--it is a memorized line they use no matter who is the employee. Don't waste your time bringing in your clothing. I went to this place with a couple of bags of my old, and for the most part, gently used clothes, expecting to get some extra cash. After waiting about half an hour in the store, I come to find out that most of my clothes were rejected, which I don't understand because my shirts were in better condition than the ones on their racks. This is like a hand me down store. People can donate their used items and then the store will sell it to the public. They have a large amount of clothes and shoes to chose from. They even have accessories like purses and jewelry. You will find old stuff that you can't even find anymore. The clothes seems to be decent they do wash it before selling it. The shoes seems a little raggity but for the price you can get it for in comparison to the price it was first sold when it first came out isnt too bad. You can clean it up. This is just a suggestion for those who are on a tight budget. I myself prefer to buy everything brand new. But for those who cant afford the newer items at a higher price can come here to shop. The brands here are all name brands like Louis Vuitton, Coach to Jordans and Dooney and Burke all for a really cheap price. Just remember they are used. read more

Came in with two big garbage bags of my Husbands clothes, hoping to at least get a little something.I filled out the form and the young man said 25-30 minutes. So I browsed and found some dresses that might look cute on me. Since this store is mostly for teens, there is no maternity section. Bummer for this prego! They had cute shoes and I even looked for clothing and shoes for my Hubby too. I ended up trying on two dresses. I asked for the door to be unlocked by this nice young lady and she opened it and told me her name.. which i forgot.. prego brain... and asked my name and told me if I needed anything just to ask. A margarita would of been nice.. Virgin of course.. I didn't see a margarita machine anywhere..So out of the question. Dresses didn't fit, bummer. So I decided to check out the Party Guys store next door and then head to Trader Joe's to pick up some yummies. When I came back the young man said he was almost done looking through my stuff. When he was done he showed me the receipt and I was getting $25 and some change. WHOOPIE! Better than nothing! So I signed the receipt and handed my bags. Since he did notice I had a hard time hauling in the heavy garbage bags, he so sweetly asked if I needed help to my car. WOWEE! What a gentleman. Of course I said, and we headed to my car. I just moved here from the Bay area. I love finding fun consignment/used clothing. But I have to start off by saying Plato's Closet.... YUCK!!!!! The first time I went in I was like okay this is going to be fun, I did find two summer skirts. I had some cute clothes that were in good shape to sell. They wanted nothing to do with them! ARE YOU KIDDING! The things I brought in were in way better shape and way cute!, so what is their issue? If they are looking just for certain brands they will be sorry, because that definitly is not what makes the style. Looking around that day that I brought my clothes in, I was really looking at what they had to offer and almost all the shirts and blouses were worn out and I mean if they were mine i would have thrown them in garbage!! When you really look at the clothing they are so USED looking! And a popular brand on the tag is not going to save it!! Hopefully they will be a little more open to fashion and have some fun!!!! Ok first off its a okay store I like the shoe part but the customr service was pretty bad. I brought some of my clothes here thinking this would be great I will make a buck and maybe get a cute dress. So this girl helpedme out saying that she'll look thtough my clothes and add up how much money I'll receive. I asked one girl who was helpful some blonde and helped me look for a dress I saw yesterday. She was very helpful looking but it seems they sold it. I mean if you're in desperate need of like $20-40 bucks then this is a good place to sell. You really have to make sure your clothes are in good condition or in trend or else they won't take them. You also have to keep in mind that you are also not gonna get half of what you at least payed for in those jeans,shoes,purse etc. A popular brand shirt (lets say forever 21 or express) that you payed 15-30 bucks for is gonna give you about 2-5 bucks the most but they might sell it for about 10 dollars, which is the sucky part. It's a neat place to shop around at and sometimes you do find some gems in there. I would follow them on Instagram because that's were they share all the good stuff that they don't necessarily display in store. read more

Came here for the 1st time with my girlfriend and we weren't greeted or asked if we needed help by any associate. As we browsed around the store 90% of the clothing we looked at was in very poor condition to be re-sold for the prices they were asking. Not to mention the awful odor of sweaty clothes and stinky feet from the clothing and shoes. You would expect a store that purchases used merchandise to clean the merchandise before they try to sell it. Especially since their return policy is only for store credit and my girlfriend and I refuse to try on unwashed clothes which is unsanitary and could carry bacterial diseases. As we were waiting in line to be rung up, the female cashier was extremely unprofessional, she was too worried about a male customer whom she had rung up right before us. She got so flustered in fact that she refused to greet us as we were standing in front of the register. So as she walked away from us, one of the other employee asked another cashier to ring us up. The second cashier was ditzy and had no idea what was going on outside her own little world. She was more concerned with her flustered coworkers situation by asking her "what just happened?, I'm so confused" And when she finally came to she was far too worried about signing us up for different email discounts and in store promotions then to focus on just ringing us up. Needless to say they need an entirely new staff and a revamped approach at the type of business they are trying to run. As for customer or anyone thinking you are gonna find a good deal or decent service your best bet is to go somewhere more respectable from a business perspective such as Marshall's or other clothing stores like it, you may spend a couple bucks more but the deals and quality of clothing are guaranteed. read more

They stole a pair of shoes. Omg whatever you do, do not bring your clothes or shoes to sell here. I took two boxes of clothes and shoes and they bought one brand new item and paid me $3 for it. Thinking about it now, I shouldn't have even sold it but I felt it was better than nothing. I took the boxes home and hadn't looked inside for months. I was having my cousins go throughout them before taking the rest to be donated and I realized I was missing a pair of orange wedges. The boxes had not been touched so I know that they kept them. It's been months at this point and I can't go back to the store. So if you are going to take your clothes after reading all the horrible reviews, stay there and make sure that they give you all your items back or at least pay you for them. read more

I've been to 3 stores all being white employees I walk i with nothing but name brand stuff with tags brand new 2 buckets & a bag they only got 4 items which 3 were all with tags & one costing $30 they only paid me $33 for EVERYTHING. I don't have any experience selling clothes here, but I have bought from this Plato's location multiple times and I ALWAYS find cute clothes here for a decent price :) Some of their clothes I feel are a bit overpriced but that's to be expected considering all the clothes are in very good shape and often name brand. The staff is friendly and the store is clean, and they carry clothes for all sizes. I visited Plato's Closet here in Modesto for the first time yesterday. The clothes were in good condition with nice new styles including plus sizes up to 18-20 and a few 22-24. I bought some shoes for $5. There was also a dress for $8 that I wanted but it didn't fit. The ladies who work there are pleasant and attentive- not "pushy". Some reviews said that the store doesn't like full-figured women. Not so. In fact, one of the workers was about a size 24. So what? From what I observed, there is no size-discrimination. Went by this place to sell some goodies i was giving away. Considering there stock of merchandise pretty much sux!!! lots of forever 21, low end knits from the jr. dept. at macy's and target brands. As i browsed through this dump i stumbled upon miss sixty jeans-$23.00 bux and marc jacobs-$25.00 bux. and then a huge selection of 7 jeans that ranged in price to50-55 bux... lmao!!!! i found this very weird considering i know the retail value of all of this stuff. I was welcomed with a bit of an attitude which is expected in these kinds of places. I am a native from hollywood, ca so i know how the snob rule applies. after waiting an hour for the buyer to go through my things my name was never called i had to confirm if my items were ready or not myself. I received 22 bux. for 6 items a receipt wasn't printed out so i wasn't sure what was bought, until i got into my car.. to my surprise all of the items i have only worn once brands such as free people, guess and bebe. were not purchased what was purchased was my 11 yr old sons woven plaid tony hawk shirts he wore when he was 9. and some hideous madden girl booties i had never worn. I dropped my stuff off at the local goodwill and was still a bit amazed at the buyers choices. I may attempt this again at another plato's closet, and by no means do i expect better service or better quality of merch. sold. But, a couple of bux is better then no bux. Another thing that i noticed as far as service goes is the obvious loud shit talking that takes place as people drop off there items.. very unpro. but, it's how some biz. choose to operate. I have been a customer at Platos for years now. I have sold them hundreds of dollars worth of clothes, which comes in handy when those bills pop out of nowhere. Some of the staff is friendly, a few not so much. I've noticed that a lot of there clothing is very worn..lots of piling, fading, spots, holes, etc. Not sure why they even bother selling that kind of stuff. The manager and assistant manager are bipolar. Nice somedays and rude other days. The one thing I get annoyed at is when I bring in my clothing nice and folded in a bag, and when they are done going through everything, it looks like a tornado hit it. This place has a mix of good and bad. There option for clothes both men and women has expanded and the staff for the dressing rooms are helpful. However if you are trying to sell clothes they will lowball you! I was willing to sell a brand new swim suit, tags on and never worn. The original price was $60 with the one item they ended up taking a total of four. Those were worth at least $100 of merchandise. I was given $6.54. Right when my aunt, brother, and I entered we were immediately greeted by a worker. I had to look through their shoes and i'm impressed but not as impressed as I thought I would be. Mostly heels or sandals and such. Some typical Converse, Toms, and Jordans here and there. Pretty good condition ones as well. They could really expand their sports racks though. My entire family (both mom and dad's sides) are sport loving fanatics so I tend to go for sporty clothes. There were only two racks filled with jackets, shorts, and pants. The workers seem really young so I take it that they know what's in style. I like that. All in all this is a very good place to shop. Affordable prices too. read more

This place is a joke. I've seen knockoff flea market vs pink, abercrombie and the shoes are really ran down. Staff is rude. And the prices ARE NOT THAT CHEAP. And by the looks of the clothes it's like they don't wash them before sale. I've been there once and will NEVER GO BACK THERE. I was told platos closet don't buy OUT OF DATE ITEMS but all I seen was extremely OUT OF DATE. 6-7 SEASON'S AGO. I'd rather go to hut8. The last three or four visits I've had they've started taking less and less and started paying LESS AND LESS for the items that I bring in. I walk around the stores and they've jacked up the prices for so many items and have the audacity to pay such low prices. I get they pay 30% of what they will sell for but I see the items and brands I bring in being sold for a lot more. For example, today I brought in lightly worn/used Birkenstocks. INCLUDING MY birkenstocks they took a total of 8 items and they only offered me $26. Bullshit. I brought in a couple of bags and some of items were UNTOUCHED. Wow, my experience with the store in Modesto was awful, not that it matters, they don't care because the store is busy. I took in quite a few boot skirts that were really cute, and the person that took my bag acted like I brought in my dirty laundry and was told after an hour wait that my clothes were to sophisticated . most of the clothes I would not buy. I went in for the first time ever today. I took a few baskets maybe 40- 55 some odd pieces of clothing and a pair of very VERY lightly worn high top purple tk society supras (very hard to find nowadays) I took in a lot of lrg, a super sweet retro Nike crewneck polo Ralph Lauren shirts and sweaters (some still with the tag) they offered me 90 cents for a Ralph Lauren button up WITH THE 96 dollar msrp TAG ON IT! I couldn't believe it they offered me 4 dollars for my shoes and Its not even worth mentioning the pennies they offered me for my lrg crooks and castle and ice cream ( all over 30 bucks a pop) I figured they'll pay 5 to ten percent of what I played and they would flip it for 30 to 45 percent of msrp which was not the case. (i later found out my sister sold some Calvin klein dresses for 50 cents each and they had them on sale for 25-30 dollars) I was anticipating a loss. I was thinking 2-3 dollars for the t shirts 3-5 for the button ups and polos (most of which were Ralph like I said with some lrg lacoste and others in the mix) and I didn't feel like I was expecting much but 90 cents is just insulting. As if that wasn't bad enough the young lady that was helping me was super super rude I tried to make little jokes because I get that it wasn't fully her fault they were ripping me off and she just gave me the dirtiest of looks and tried to tell me my (brand new with tags on them) clothes were balled and worn and faded. Worst customer service experience EVER! They took forever to look through my clothes ( close to an hour) SO in short -the store sucks especially if you wear anything over a medium for both sexes -most of the clothes are Still eerily close to msrp and they try to pass knock of coach as legit(got a kick out of that one) if you shop hard you may find a good deal or two tho I will not completely discredit them -Worst customer service I've ever encountered anywhere believe me I'm a sales rep for 2 bakeries and I used to be one at a clothing store.
