I came in yesterday and was greeted and helped almost immediately! Brought in about 8 items, men's jeans, shirts, etc. they purchased 6 items which surprised me a bit. Honestly wasn't expecting that much to begin with. Also was told that they're needing more male items to add to their inventory so I'm gonna be heading there today with another bundle of clothing items. I have mainly Hollister, American Eagle, and nice quality Tees to let go and I definitely have found the place to do just that!! This store shouldn't have so many negative reviews IMO you have to research first before going in blind which is what I did I knew what to expect so I made sure I presented what was needed. Quick tip: if your items aren't for young teens and young adults don't bother. This isn't the place for you if you're trying to sell women's or men's items. From personal experience, you can find some good stuff, but I have yet to find anything amazing! As for my selling experience, it was not great! They are not to aware of high end brands!! My first time going in and I had things to sell. I was going to look around but in all honesty just glancing nothing looked "gently" used. Most items looked worse than clothes I've had for 10 years. I brought in some very nice handbags. Including Coach, Michael Kors and Lucky Brand. Included was limited edition Oakley sunglasses, a Sevenly shirt and Guess Jeans. I'm assuming by their comment they have no idea who is Sevenly. It's a brand that gives to charity. Their clothes are well made and much better than Aeropostale. Anyways, they only wanted 3 items. I accepted their offer because I no longer wanted those items and felt over all it was a fair offer for those items. My issue was their rejection of the others. Stating they wanted structure handbags. Off because one of the bags they purchased was not structured. I think they knew I would not accept a low offer for the Lucky Brand purse as it looks brand new. W I doubt I would go back unless I had clothes to bring in or wanted to by some very worn looking jeans. The place felt unorganized and customers seemed to lack respect for the items as they were shopping. My tip would be to not bring in big name clothes. This is not the place. They truly want brands that just above Target quality but below Nordstrom quality. That's not a bad thing but it's something to know before going. This store is located in a plaza across from Vintage Fair Mall, so there is plenty of parking. I do like to come in here for some lucky finds-- jeans, sweaters, dresses. They only accept current trends, so I usually find at least one thing when I stop by (and it is half the price of what you would pay across the street!). They also buy clothes and this service can be hit or miss just as much as shopping there. You can ask ahead of time about styles they are looking for and bring in some clothes matching that description, or just bring a bag of clothes you were planning on giving away and see if you can at least get some money for them. When I've brought clothes in they usually tell me it will be a 15-20 min wait, so it's easy to go a few doors down and shop at Trader Joe's or even run to the mall real quick. read more

Came here with 10 boxes of clothes to sell and wasted my lunch hour doing so as well as the next customers time. When I called to ask about their consignment protocol there was nothing mentioned about style or sizes that they do and do not accept. They ended up only taking 4 items or of 10 boxes. This is by far my favorite Plato's! I live in SF and have been to the Pacifica(worst customer service ever) and San Mateo locations numerous of times and have always received horrible service, plus the workers stand there gossiping about all the other co-workers. They see you walk in and don't even smile or say hi even if you're the only one in the store. You can read their reviews for yourself. Then when I went to the Modesto location, I was so shocked at how nice, welcoming and helpful everyone is at this location! They also have the best selection of clothes which is organized making it easier to find what you're looking for. SELLING: 3/5 What I am used to is an individual going through your haul piece by piece summing it up and making a pile with what they will take and what they will return for you. This place is not like that. You wait until your name is on the whiteboard while a computer sums up the prices for you. Sucks not knowing face to face which are considered valuable and what isn't. I don't get bitter if the price isn't what I expected/wanted to hear. The 'system' offered me $15 for almost-new Jordan Retro 3's originally $115. I am not bitter about it- if you don't like the price- don't sell. Easy. What I particularly didn't like was that I didn't know what they took until I got my big bag of stuff and looked through it to see what was taken. Can't change nothing about that, so I'll accept that. I didn't like that my things were super unorganized when given back to me. Also thought it was random to have taken the flats, but left the shoe box in my bag...? I think there can be improvements made here. BUYING: 5/5 As I was cruising around, I noticed immediately that everything is ORGANIZED and neat. Everything is also VISIBLE & attracts your vision. Very easy shopping, especially for a person like me who hates shopping. This, I would assume, takes effort from all the employees to manage. I like the prices, the quality, and the brands I saw. My husband and I brought a basket of clothes + bag of clothes and they only selected like 7-8 pieces. We made $20 only and had to carry out our clothes back. I understand they have to pick out what they like and want, but honestly.. they picked out the ugliest stuff lmao! I had a bunch of pretty party dresses that I wore once and they did not select any of them. I honestly thought the dresses were gonna make me the bucks. They were brands such as forever21, charlotte russe and h&m. I was so shocked that they selected just some crop tops, sweaters and my jean skirt. I get that casual is more their thing, but people like me prefer to buy a pretty dress for cheap especially since i only like to wear them once. I then went on Facebook marketplace and posted my dresses for sale at $6-10, and so many people messaged me for them! I sold them ALL (7 dresses) the next day and made $50! I'm not lying yaalllll... they were cute party dresses!!! I guess its a no loss for me but for Plato's! We probably won't be coming back here to donate clothes. It was our first time but they were very selective on clothes. Wish we would have known that before driving 30 minutes out. Lost on gas money going there too. Try selling your cute fashionable pieces on fb marketplace first, you might make more plus you dont have to travel... they travel to you! read more

I came here expecting not to make as much as I did. I brought in 30 items, but only 14 was considered "their style" and received about $40 back. Their selection was actually pretty large, although they only take select clothing. The prices were pretty high for a "thrift" store. i brought over 60 items here and they ended up taking 6 for $35. they have wayyyyy too many jeans and dresses and they didn't take any of mine. they also didn't take a lot of my clothes because they had "stains" which honestly probably could've came off in the wash, so make sure your items are clean!!! over all i did see some raggedy stuff on the racks that looked worse than my items but for the most part, the shirts and jeans were all in good condition on the racks. i ended up selling all my items on offer up in less than a day for $100 and i suggest that option of you don't have luck here:) employees were nice please don't yell at them. read more

I've been going to this store occasionally for awhile now, and each time it seems like the quality and selection has gotten worse. Almost every item is dingy and the good brands are scarce. It's really just like a thrift store with somewhat cute clothes and no grandma smell. Not only that but it is such a rip off to sell your clothes to them. You're better off selling them online or something. $3 for a BRAND NEW forever 21 dress? Really? I understand it's a business and all that, but I won't sell my $120 miss me jeans for $12. Customer service is alright. I could tell the girl I was with is training, but I sensed attitude when I wanted to take the jeans off. This place grows on you (especially if you a notorious thrifterholic like myself). The staff at this particular Plato's always keeps their place neat, organized, and chill. Not super overwhelming or clothes super cramped or crowded with stuff. They have enough inventory on the racks to make you comfortable with going through them and enough to want to make you look through them all hoping that you find a gem of an item. The items displayed on the walls are always super trendy and cute which definitely inspires my shopping criteria of the moment/day. The Staff is always friendly and kind. I don't know if it's because I've been going there quite often, but they always try to make an effort to get to know me a little bit more and make small talk. When I first started going there- I noticed that they were a little selective in who they said "hello" to as you walked in the door. I definitely wasn't greeted the first five times come there and every once in a while which made me seem a little judged on my current fashion style and outward appearance. Like I get it- sometimes when the whole staff is busy it is hard to get a greeting in their when you're concentrated, but if you do it to a few customers- you have to make it a company policy to do it for all customers. This particular Plato's finally started offering plus size clothing, which I don't need but I feel it is important to cater to all different sizes (especially in our society and in general). Came here yesterday and finally checked in . It's a pretty large Platos closet, bigger than most. 2/3 of the store is women's. The last 1/4 is men's. The men's section is rather large. I mean for a women clothing store. It's pretty massive. They have a lot of denim for men (pretty much the entire section is denim and active). All in all it's neat lace for gently used and even new clothing. Check it out. P.S. They have a ton of summer clothes but seeing as winter is coming Theyre actively looking for fall clothes. Disappointed. You have the plus size areas but very few items available. The service was fast in selling some items. However I was instructed that they didn't purchase a lot of items because they have a large back stock. I've been I this store many times in hopes to find a treasure. Nope. Sad people want to save money and look nice. And not everyone is super skinny. If you have items Platos Closet won't take try three up. For $16 they send you a bag fill it up and they'll email you with their price. Amdthi n't they don't want they'll send back. Came here today after cleaning out my closet to see what kind of quick cash I could make and was pleasantly surprised. I made way more then I thought I would, but I have sold here in the past and didn't make quite as much so I do feel like it's a hit or miss depending on I guess who's looking at your stuff. I know they say they're mainly only looking for things from the "mall" but when I looked around at their stuff while I was waiting I felt like alot of their stuff didn't look like "mall quality" just normal thrift store status stuff. I just blame society for being such pricks to these employees. Literally if you don't like the price they are offering you for your clothing don't waste your time in taking it there. My experience here was very pleasant today. All of the associates were very nice and they have a lot of inventory. I sold today and am very familiar with the process since I usually go to the one in Pleasanton. It was very busy and the girl said it would be a hour and 20 min wait and she was spot on regarding timing. I was only expecting no more than 30.00 but received 70 something dollars for my items. I know a lot of people are disappointed with selling items here but you have to remember that this store is for middle school/high school kids. No 13 year old girl wants to wear a Michael kors purse no matter how nice it is. read more

I love platos! I've been shopping here since I was about 16 and I'm 27 now. They always have a great variety of clothes, lots of accessories and their clothes are always in style and season. I take my little cousins here shopping as much as I can too. My dad also finds some great things there too. I was followed around the store while shopping and kept being asked if I needed help. Then a girl came up and grabbed what I had out of my hand and said she needed to hold them and it was the new store policy. I spent over 75$ that day there so I am unsure of why I was treated so bad. Not only that but the girl that took the clothes is the one that rang me up and she was beyond rude. They did this to no one else in the store and there were people walking around with arm loads. I recently took a box of clothes that I had cleaned out of my closet to this store thinking they'd take most of it because my items are brands they have listed on their site and all were in perfect or brand new condition. The items included several Free People dresses and tops (some still with tags), great quality levi's jeans, American Eagle denim and dresses, a cute BCBG dress that I wore once to a wedding last year and several pairs of heels and nike athletic gear. All of these items were purchased less than two years ago. The girl doing my bucket kept telling me how short staffed they were and they had too much in stock to really take anything. They ended up taking 2 of my husbands shirts and one pair of shoes. The girl told me that my items were "too nice" and "too high end" for their store. She also told me my clothes were too old? I asked her what that meant and she said anything older than 12 months they don't take. I ended up getting a Thred Up box and selling all of my items online and making about $300. This store is not worth your time. And maybe the reason they aren't selling clothes is because they are buying nice things. read more

I came into Plato's Closet for the first time yesterday. I brought in a large bag of clothes, shoes, & hand bags hoping to sell most of it & make as much as possible. I brought in about 70-90 items & they only took 21 of the things that was their "style". I received $67 for the items they did take, which was a lot more than I was expecting. So I was pretty content, I wish they took more things though. To be honest, I feel like the staff didn't even fully look through the bag of clothes I had. It seems as if they just lightly fluff through the bag & take whatever was on top that they see b/c I had a lot of name brand clothes that they mainly look for @ the bottom of the bag (Brandy Melville, VS PINK, etc) & they didn't bother to take those, which surprised me. But oh well. Overall, my experience with selling was a pretty good one. I would definitely sell my stuff their again. As for buying things there, I wouldn't really go out of my way to shop their b/c their things were pretty overpriced for the quality of the clothes. You do find some hidden gems here & there, but it'll take a while to find considering their is a huge selection & looking through everything is such a hassle. read more

This place is hot or miss. There have been times I have found nice things for good prices but usually I am surprised at the high prices. I can go to any other thrift store in Modesto and get better prices for the same type of items. Sometimes I see items or stains on them so it makes me think they do not inspect things very well when they buy them from people. I would not recommend selling them your items, it is never worth my time when I do. I'm always surprised at the items they take of mine and the things they turne away. Horrible place. Really snobby workers. I brought in several bags of nice clothing, no rips, snags, stains, good brands. I shopped around for quite some time waiting. They never called me. I finally walk up to the desk and they rudely hand me my canvas bags. They said they couldn't take ANYTHING! They said they were outdated, which they were not. They ripped one of my bags I had to carry out. I was already holding some items to buy. They rudely rang them up. I got home, and two of the items had hidden holes! How nice. I used to come to this place all the time about a year or so ago and never had a problem buying/selling. However, In the past 6 or so months I probably wouldn't recommend this place to anyone wether you are buying or selling. The exchange rates are incredibly low, most of the time they say they can't take certain stuff because it looks worn however I see all sorts of things there that are DISGUSTING and it confuses me how they can sell stuff like that but not other things? It's an "ok" place to sell clothes, I gave it a 2 star rating because the items that the sales associates don't accept do not match with what I've seen them selling . For instance they will always say that they didn't accept an item because it had a hole but 95 percent of the shoes that they sell are completely torn and have stains. So it does make me think that they accept items only from a certain group of people. Also as a custom it would be nice to see them hire more people of color ( Asian.. African American.. Indian.. Hispanic) In response to Christianna from management, I didn't have a "negative" experience, this is just something I've noticed throughout the years of me going there. It could be the lingo that the associates are trained to use, like saying they're not accepting items that look "worn" when there are shoes and clothes that have disgusting stains on them that you guys are selling. I took a bag full of denim jeans (what they claim they take more)... and they didn't take not one pair. "Claim" they were too worn. No lie those jeans were worn MAYBE AT MOST 3 times. I had weight loss surgery and was literally going down sizes in weeks. So I know for a fact these jeans were NOT worn out. Yet the jeans I bought from there 3 days before were more worn than the ones I took in. So I will NEVER go back to sell or buy!! I went in there a couple weeks ago to check out the clothes for my girlfriend. I brought in some stuff that she wanted me to sell, and they were offering nothing and with a whole bunch of name-brand stuff! I didn't want to bring her home $2 for an Ambercrombie sweatshirt. They need to offer a little more and not be so picky on what you bring in . Most of the clothes I bought for her so I know they were expensive and higher-end . The staff isn't very friendly but the clothes are pretty cheap. They do over price a little on the higher-end clothing for being used. I absolutely love Plato's closet, but here recently I decided I wanted to sell my clothes to them. I brought in brand new clothes almost never worn from Pink by Victoria secrets, Nike, Adidas, and Forever 21 clothes. They took probably about maybe 10-15 mins looking through the clothes I went back up to the counter since my name was on the board. The girl pulled me aside and told me that they could only take one item because "they're not quality items that they want" ..... I WAS SHOOK. Like I said I had Pink, Nike, and too name brands! Those items are so expensive, and they are telling me that they don't take those kinds of items??? I believe that Plato's closet should change their "selling policies" the item that she took was the adidas shirt that cost me $35 dollars and she only gave me $2.35.... I WAS RIPPED OFF... Worst customer service I've ever seen. I wouldn't go there again if the clothes were free!! I will be telling others about my experience for a very long time. If there was a option for no stars or even minus stars it would be more appropriate. I purchased clothing for my daughter who couldn't wear items bought- upon my return to store I was unable to return any of the items because 1 shirt had not been rung up on the register by the very person who sold it to me originally?? He made me feel like he was accusing me of shoplifting the items. I said that's ok..... I will never stop telling people about my experience there.
