We called to get our dog trained. He is a red nose pitbull and we warned the ladies in charge that he gets excited when he sees dogs. After bringing him for his first training day the trainers did not know what to do. All they had in their hand was a spray bottle. They wouldn't pet my dog, acknowledge my dog, or even talk to me dog. They are very unprofessional and their venue is full of crates. So I would not recommend here. read more

Play Dog Excellence used to be a roller skating rink and then all of a sudden it closed down. In a couple of years it became Play Dog Excellence. Never thought I'd need it but I bought a golden retriever who now almost weighs more than me. Although he's a gentle giant he has been known to yank me to the ground. So I decided to enrol him into an obedience class. It was supposed to be a six weeks class but unfortunately we missed one class. So Sampson went five weeks. The trainers are very caring and helpful. They taught me how to be able to walk my fur baby on a leash without having to worry about him dragging me to the ground. Now we go for walks almost daily. Which we both enjoy. Getting the exercise that both of us need. I'm so pleased with the training I've signed us up for two more classes. Total recall. And tricksters. Recall is where Sampson will learn to come to me no matter what he's preoccupied with. Tricksters is where he'll learn some simple tricks and continue to learn different obedience manners if you are having troubles with your beloved puppy I highly recommend Play Dog Excellence tO help you teach your fur baby the obedience they need to make life easier. Don't give up on them and put them in a dog shelter where most likely they will be put down. Aren't they worth spending a little money on and thirty minutes a day to practice their new acquired skills. I know I'm amazed what five weeks did for Sampson and me. read more

While my husband has had dogs before, I've always been a crazy cat lady. So when we adopted a 6-month-old shepherd/collie mix, I knew I wanted to take her to some obedience classes. First we met with Nancy Miller for a one-hour session to get some help with crate training, leash-walking and house-breaking. We'd only had the puppy for three days before our session but I was crying every day out of frustration. After we met with Nancy, I was ready to cry with joy. She really helped steer us in the right direction as far as crate-training, and gave us some helpful tips for leash-walking and house-breaking, too. Then we signed up for the STAR Puppy class, which lasted six weeks. The cost was very reasonable (it was actually less than what PetSmart had quoted me and from what I've heard their trainers aren't actually certified or anything, they just do a one-week crash course), but I would have been happy even if it cost more. The class was tremendously helpful. Our puppy got a chance to socialize with other dogs before and after class, but during class you're not supposed to let your dog play with the other dogs because it's disruptive (just like a real school, haha). Nancy Cambron was our instructor and she was wonderful. She's very soft-spoken and gentle, but can whip even the most unruly puppy into shape without ever raising her voice. She was also so great about staying after class to answer any questions the owners had about their pups--we got lots of help with leash-walking, since our puppy is pretty crappy about that. The STAR Puppy course is mainly about teaching *you* how to train your puppy, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Since I had never had dogs before I didn't know squat about how to train them, and my husband hadn't ever tried to train any of his. We learned valuable lessons on how to get our puppy to focus on us, how to sit/lay down, how to come when called, and how to walk on a leash. At the end of the six weeks there's a test, and if your puppy passes you get a certificate and can mail off for a plaque and a medal. (Ours passed!) After just the first week I could tell how much the class was helping, and I've already signed up for a three-week focus course on recall (our little girl is crazy and could use some more help focusing on us in strange environments). I was so relieved to find PDX. Everyone with a dog wants to offer advice based on how they trained their dog, but it's nice to have a group of people with legitimate training to provide time-tested advice that really does help. read more

Took my 3 month old Bernedoodle here for puppy training and did not have good experience. The instructor wasn't very personable or knowledgeable. For $150 my pup learned sit and down, well actually just down she already knew sit when we started. Save your money you can learn more on YouTube. read more

My puppy and I love going to training classes at PDX. We are on our second series of classes and have learned so much. It's more than worth the 30 minute drive for us to get there. We plan on taking many more classes at PDX. read more

Had horrible experience here- would not recommend for anyone. Signed up for dog training classes and was greeted by someone who told me I signed up for wrong class even though it was their staff who told me what class to take. Trainer only interested in certain breeds and was not helpful at all. Learned so much more from YouTube and books. read more

Dropped my Chocolate Lab off for his first-ever day at Doggie Day Care this past week and was super-pleased with the experience! Shortly after we were greeted by their welcoming staff, he was whisked off to the back. I got a phone call at noon with an update on how he was doing: Loving the doggie runs, loving all of the staff, but not particularly interested in the other dogs. That describes him to a T! When I picked him up at the end of the day, he came trotting out on his leash, looking pleased and satisfied with himself. This friendly staff makes it all easy on the owner. My miniature dachshund, Tucker, absolutely LOVES staying here! I board Tucker at PDX about once to twice a month and he darts in there every time we arrive. The staff knows him by name and immediately welcomes him in. It's always hard to leave him, but I am rest assured that he is in good hands! read more

Let me start off by saying I never got to the actual training. The reason for this is because of the unwelcoming tone of the customer service. My wife and I enquired about the training for my puppy and two separate times one with my wife and one with myself, we spoke with two different people. My wife spoke with someone who is very difficult and confusing to understand, she would tell her one thing and aknowledge another that would not correspond to what she just previously said. The other lady I spoke with that was rude and short by saying they don't train the dog, YOU train the dog, which I understand but was not the answer to my question at all. I feel like there are a lot of owners out there that expect trainers to do all the work, I am not one of them, but I was treated as such without any benefit of the doubt. Because of this lousy customer service we chose to go to petsmart, and again, their trainers in school might be great but we did not get that far because of the sub par customer service. I felt like they have treated all the dogs they have come in contact with, with such a domineering way, they have forgot how to talk to people. If they would be interested I could train them on proper human to human etiquette. Hope them the best just not from my dog read more

my experience here was most upsetting. i got myself in a bind and had to leave my dog here for 8 days, against my better judgement. i did everything i could beforehand also. i scheduled a visit, i scheduled a trial, etc. no one seemed to know what i wanted for him. when i picked him up, no one could tell me how the visit had gone, there were no sheets on how he ate, played, etc, like every other boarding facility i have ever used, does. the staff was most unwelcoming. i would not recommend leaving your dog here for any reason at all. i travel all over and board my dog regularly and never before have i had to apologize to my dog for leaving him in an unhappy place. when i picked him up, he apparently had not eaten much because he had food left after 8 days, and he was shaking for the next 12 hours. they kept him kenneled most of the time. absolutely not advisable. most disappointing, thank god dogs forgive us humans. read more

This place is great. We found out about it because at least 5 of our friends have gone here and recommended it highly. We have a rescue pit mix that we love, but has been a nightmare to train. We have tried other trainers, books, etc. with no luck. We have done a few 1 on 1 sessions with Nancy and we have seen huge progress. He doesn't freak out at everything he sees, he listens, and we can go on a walk without it being a huge debacle. We still have some work to do, but overall I would most definitely recommend this place. read more

My hound mix doggie started out at PDX by easing into day-boarding, did daycare for a while, and has gone back to day-boarding and staying over for boarding while we go on trips. The communication at PDX is excellent and Nancy Miller has talked through my dog's personality with me on multiple occasions. When the time came that daycare wasn't the best option for him, she was 100% honest with me and told me that they didn't want to give him the opportunity to make choices that weren't in his best interest due to stress and feeling cooped up with many dogs. He prefers being around fewer dogs at a time because of his personality, and that's okay! I will always appreciate her expertise and judgment tremendously, and there is still an option for my dog to enjoy PDX while day-boarding, a lower energy setting than daycare. I have absolute trust in all of the staff that my baby is safe, loved, and cared for while I'm away, and for a pet parent, that's the best feeling there is. read more

We have completed 2 classes and love the training . Bad feed back was our 13 month yellow Lab went into heat and we saw signs several week before and stated keeping in home total and using dippers. Always took out side on leash and we have a fenced back yard. Always stayed and monitored her. After the 4 weeks and she had totally stopped showing signs, we waited two more weeks and took her back to day care. We had already scheduled to have here spaded and was in surgery and received a call from the nurse. GUESS WHAT- she is two weeks pregnant and now they have sow her up and wait to see what the hell pops out!! No telling what they are!!! We were told by staff we were OK at this time. They must not be watching them that close. BE CAREFULLY We will never go there again!! read more

Grooming, daycare, boarding, training - my dogs and I have done it all with PDX. When your dogs are like family members, it's scary to drop them off for daycare or boarding. But my German Shepherd mix loves his PDX days. Every day when I leave for work, he looks at me, just hoping he gets to go. On the days I take him, he is so excited - but when he gets home, he's just so exhausted that I know he had a great and busy time. He's less nervous around other dogs and people too. The staff is great - it's obvious they know and love every dog they care for. The training classes should be mandatory for every dog owner - not only do the dogs learn obedience or manners or whatever class you take, the owners learn how to better understand and partner with their dog. It definitely creates a better relationship between us. Bottom line - they are the best at what they do, which is caring for my dog. read more

We have had two Westies there. Our first was old and grouchy. The "dog whisperer" Angie could groom him and cut his nails without a problem. He died and we got a Westie pup that has almost lived there at PDX. He loves the groomers, the trainers, all the dog helpers there. He has been to day care, boarding and taken numerous training classes. He LOVES PDX in every way. Everyone is kind and friendly and willing to help in any way. And I love, love, love PDX because he does. And we would not take this little guy anywhere that we did not feel 100% positive! read more
