I've been coming to Playa Bowls for a long time and I've always loved it. The food is delicious, and I usually order delivery or visit the store. The atmosphere is also really nice and enjoyable. However, my last visit was a bit disappointing. A lady who served us had a very rude attitude and seemed like she wanted us to leave quickly. Our order was a bit confusing since we had several bowls and some were half-and-half, but I still felt she could have been more patient. I'm Hispanic, and I honestly felt she treated us differently because of that. She also started helping another customer who arrived after us while still taking our order, which felt unprofessional. This has never happened to me before, which is why I still give 4 stars. Other than that experience, everything has always been great. I'd also love if they brought back last year's summer special passion fruit bowl--it was amazing and a lot of people seemed to love it. read more

I stopped in to check this place out for the first time tonight (9/2) at about 6:10 PM. I had never tried it before. When I walked in, there were two employees behind the counter and one standing on the customer side of the counter. Not one of them greeted me or said anything to me at all. They just kept talking among themselves like I wasn't even there. Eventually, after an awkward amount of time, one of the employees behind the counter asked me, "Sir, are you lost?" Yeah, those were their first words to me. I guess I wasn't standing where they thought I should be to place my order. I should have just walked out then, knowing that good customer service wasn't going to be part of this experience. But, I came this far, so I decided to let it slide and try it anyway. I ordered the Kowabunga smoothie. It was decent, except they left a frozen chunk of banana about the size of a whole lime in the bottom of my drink. How does that happen in a blender? I suspect it was intentional, but who knows. How do you not notice that? Not a great first experience. I highly doubt I'll be back. read more

I visited this Playa Bowl location quite frequently due to its proximity. The Nutella Bowl (half acai and half greens) is still my favorite along with the 16oz sweet cream cold brew (with almond milk - no upcharge!). Service is friendly and the staff are pretty good at getting orders completed even when it's super busy. Suggest ordering when you get there rather than using the app especially if you're getting your order to go - your bowl is more likely to survive the drive home! read more

First time here and it's not a bad place. It's very tropical focused in decor and the offerings are extensive. Definitely helpful if you're into the tropical feel. We just got back from Antigua and wanted something sweet so this place worked for us. We just had some spicy Chinese noodles across the square. There are some seating options inside. Tall ceilings to make it feel grand without the square footage. Overall, I am grateful for this place to be here when we wanted something sweet. read more

I've passed back this shop so many times when I visit the Trader Joe's in Darnestown. With the temps being as high as they've been, I didn't want to eat anything heavy. Smoothies from Playa Bowl to the rescue! It's über cute and trendy when you walk in. Lots of bright neon colors, from the menu to signage throughout the shop. There's plenty of space to sit if you want to stop and enjoy your bowls or smoothies. My kids immediately gravitated to the board game area. They've got chess, connect four, etc. The staff are young but very courteous and helpful. I told them it was our first time visiting. I was semi-shocked that they do not have dairy milk at all. So we had to pick from coconut, almond, cashew, etc. Totally vegan friendly or friendly for those who have a lactose allergy -- not so great for my 6 y/o lol. My 11 y/o and I can drink smoothies and eat smoothie bowls like 2x a day, 5 days a week if you let us. So this was right up our alley. She got the Dolce smoothie, which includes bananas, peanut butter, whey chocolate protein and subbed almond milk in place of coconut milk. She absolutely loved it! It was a really good flavor combination, but I could tell it wasn't blended super well because I could feel the banana slimey-like texture when I sipped it. She didn't seem to mind it though. My 6 y/o played to safe and got the strawberry banana smoothie and subbed almond milk in place of coconut milk. She didn't like this at all. I halfway didn't blame her. It wasn't sweet at all and that banana texture again. Whomp whomp. But I kept it and used it as a base for a smoothie I made at home the following day. The absolute highlight/winner was me!! I got the electric mermaid bowl, which has pitaya (dragonfruit) as the base, granola (with dried blueberries), pineapple, mango, kiwi, coconut flakes and honey. I'm not a big coconut flakes fan so I subbed it for white chocolate. While we were waiting for our order, the staff told me they ran out of kiwi, so I added strawberries in its place. It was SO good!!! I felt like I died and went to heaven. Probably one of the best smoothie bowls I've had in my entire existence. And so good that my 6 y/o ate half of it . All in all, I really enjoyed playa bowl. Our bill came to $28.98. Not terribly bad considering the bowl was $13 and the smoothies were $7.99 each. The price of the bowl is on par with most of the other smoothie places around here. The smoothies were slightly higher but again, not terribly far off. Never had anything like this! I got the mango berry bowl and I thought the fruits would be overbearing but I was able to eat every bite with a fruit, granola, and their mango base. It had fresh fruits and the mango reminds of a sorbet but thicker texture. The mango did have an interesting strong after taste and tasted healthy. I ordered an unsweetened pitaya smoothie (16 oz). It tasted disgustingly sweet, so I asked the woman at the counter if it was sweetened / whether sugar had been added. She said "no, the smoothie contains just the pitaya base and coconut milk". So I checked the nutritional page on their website and this smoothie does indeed have 65 grams of sugar! This is a very high amount of sugar, like three days worth of sugar allowance. I threw the drink away without drinking it. If you are trying to live a healthy lifestyle, this is not it. There should only be about 16 - 18 grams of natural sugar in the pitaya fruit in a 16 oz smoothie. Buyers beware. read more

I have really come to love Playa Bowls. I'll be honest, I didn't imagine I would join the açaí bowl craze, but we all do things in life that we're not quite expecting right. Sometimes we really can surprise ourselves. And yes, Playa Bowls is that existential. First off, their menu is huge. But, also the beauty is that everything is quite customizable. I like getting one of the açaí bowls and adding peanut butter to it. The combination of peanut butter, coconut flakes, berries, and açaí is just so good. I literally crave playa bowls like my dog craves attention #AllTheTime The space is quite nice as well. The ceilings must be like 20 ft high. It's decorated well, it's comfortable. Most of the employees I've encountered are on the younger side - and they seem to be having fun while working which is welcome. They sell their own granola that's packaged up in cute little brown bags. I mean, I wish I could justify a playa bowl a day - it's not the cheapest thing in the world... but it's like a smoothie. Good for you, delicious, and you should treat yourself everyone once in a while. The difference is, while making a smoothie at home is quite easy. Making a playa bowl / açaí bowl is not. Prices are standard for smoothie bowls in the area. Parking is easy - it's located in a plaza. The only downfall is consistency. Some days, it's fresh and excellent and some days it isn't. My favorite place to get smoothie/Açaí bowls! The bowls are always fresh and flavorful. I've been to other places that serve açaí bowls but this place is my go to. Love to order online because it convenient to come in, pickup and keep it moving. Although I have no reason to search for other places who serve these products, Playa bowls does tend to miss a few ingredients/substitutions sometimes. I've had two experiences where my order was missing something that was either apart of the original order or a substitution. No biggie, I always check my order before I pull off, but this can be an inconvenience to others who make it all the way home. I've had several açaí bowls and haven't been disappointed with flavors, fruits & grains. The Stupid Cupid is also a great flavorful bowl as well. One day I ordered an oatmeal bowl and it wasn't what I was expecting. The oatmeal is plain but I had it topped with berries. I personally like my oatmeal with some sugar or sweetness but this took me by surprise. I was actually going for a bowl of granola topped w/ a smoothie and whole fruits. There was a good topping to smoothie ratio, so I got the perfect bite each time. It also wasn't overly sweet which I appreciated. As far as the price, it was a bit pricey or at least more than I'd like to spend on smoothies. But I could tell the quality was good and made the price point understandable. I've been here a few times now and my favorites are the Pura Vida, Chia Tella, Booster bowl, and Nutella acai bowl. Each time they have turned our fresh and delicious. They also have a mini fridge up front for I think previously made bowls that have gone unclaimed or a mistake was made on. Those are $7 compared to a regular $10 bowl. However, I'm not a big fan of them since the fruit and toppings are frozen and need time to thaw out, but even when they thaw they're soggy. read more

The ambiance of the location is Gaithersburg gives a nice beachy feel so you feel like you can escape the world. The staff and are very friendly and if you sign up for their rewards program/ text they'll send you discounts. For me I think the bowls can be very cold unlike some other açaí bowls but overall they have good flavor. read more

Recently went in for a Nutella bowl with half mango base and they did not disappoint the consistency of the base was perfect on top of that seeing the staff cut the fruit fresh in front of you makes me feel like I'm eating healthy the place has a gorgeous beach vibe to it and the music is the cherry on top, really makes me feel like I'm back at the beach. Today 5/8/24 Gaithersburg, MD location, I came in and order 2 bowls and the employee preparing my bowl was scratching her face, head and rubbing her nose eith the gloves on. When I brought it to her attention and asked her to change her gloves and remake my bowls, she got irritated. She walked away and proceeded to help another customer, while also letting the other employee know about my issue. The other employee came and preceeded to continue to make my bowls. As she asked questions, the original girl informed her that I wanted them remade. She ignored her and preceeded. She then called my name and I told her that I told the original girl to te make them and I saw and heard her tell you that. She then started arguing with me and said these are new bowls etc etc. I told her that I just sat here in full view of the bowls and those were the original bowls. She continued to convince me of the lie with a argumentative tone and attitude as she was processing my refund. I finally had to tell her to watch her attitude. It is very upsetting to see how inappropriate people can be while preparing food for the public and be unapologetic about it. I am a loyal customer, I'm purchasing bowls all of the time.
