TL;DR: Place is just dodgy. Pitches themselves are okay. Rest of facilities are mid at best. Folk…read morethat patronize this place can be toxic, tribal, and insular; if you're not a townie, you may not feel welcome. Pros: There are two pitches. The smaller of the two is an indoor air-conditioned brick room (ostensibly the name sake of the venue) with one wall being a plexiglass window. Provides a nice quick game. The doors to the room could be easier to lock, they feel flimsy and often it's not clear when they're unlocked or locked. Outside pitch is a standard 7-a-sides pitch, unwalled. Pitches seems well-maintained. Restrooms are not filthy, but not sparkling. Cons: Like any good hipster gin bar, there is no signage to the venue from Shary Rd. You just sort of have to know that it is located behind the Superior Granite. Whether or not they are affiliated, I have no clue. Entering and exiting the lot is dangerous, because they only open half of the gate, so oncoming and outgoing traffic must use the same half an opening. Behind the closed half of the gate is an array of stone slabs. Why not have those on display further away from the street and open both halves? The lot itself is really... not... paved. Or it was at one point, and now they've let it go to seed. I've had at least three flat tires from that lot because of the industrial debris strewn about. When it rains, the potholes fill up, and some are very deep, and because the lot is not lit well they are difficult to avoid. If you're walking to your vehicle at night (as I always do), you have to be careful not to dip into a pothole and roll your ankle. The lot is unlit, there's no security. My buddy had his car broken into one night. They hired security for a minute, after the break-in, but I haven't seen the security dude in ages. I've had a ball taken once already. I try to buy match quality, so it's not cheap to just let some kid snake your ball every so often. If you did not grow up in the RGV, this is one of these spaces out here that will make you feel like an outsider some rube-ass vibes. I've had some--just, odd interaction with folk here. I was playing my regular Monday game tonight. Some kids were playing with my ball (our group decided to use a different ball tonight, and stuff stays outside the room). Most kids just leave the ball where they found it, because they know it isn't theirs. After my match tonight, I look around the lobby and no ball. So I head outside, and see some kids playing with it on the big pitch. Kid tells me it's his ball... then after I press him a second time, he says it's his friend's. Cool, let's ask him about it then. A mom approaches and basically tries to make it seem like I'm in the wrong here for even talking to her kid. Um, no. Lady, you brought them into public and let them interact with the property of strangers. I'd eventually have asked to speak to parents if the "friend" decided to double-down on the story, but I wanted to let them do right. Unfortunately, as a teacher I see this all too often: parents who cannot hold their child accountable for their actions, and instead run cover for their "angels". She tells me to keep an eye on my things. How? I was in that room balling this whole time. At this point both squads of players hear what's going on. Do they know what's going on? No. But the absolute vicious tribalism kicks in, and I'm shouted at, called names, had water thrown upon me. The owner, or manager, or guy-in-charge, or whatever sees this all go down, and as I come back into the building I'm livid and tell my friends what went down. And I shout, "That wasn't right. That wasn't right." And I cannot begin to describe the look of absolute ineptitude in handling that situation. No apologies from him. Nothing. Not after I spent $3 on a 1.86oz Snickers? I come to football to de-stress, and this place is now to the point of being beyond frustrating. I no longer feel safe there. I wouldn't bring my kid here. Been going for about four years now for a Mon/Thu pickup game, and tonight I'm done. Deuces, the Cage.
