Covered with hanging baskets and climbing plants outside for at least the past twenty years, its facade has become so overgrown that the sign is no longer legible through the greenery. This makes it a lovely place to sit and watch the traffic go by in the summer, at one of the outside tables and a perfectly decent place for hardy smokers to fill their lungs in the winter. Inside, the atmosphere is wonderfully cosy with its rosy lighting, film posters, books and bonkers bric-a-brac providing vaguely Dada-esque decor. There is a wood-fire in the winter which increases the impulse to hunker down with a pint in the corner. In the summer this can all get a little overwhelming and so if you can't get a table outside, you're probably better off heading upstairs to the tall-windowed, airy dining room which is also where they hold their friendly quiz every Tuesday. Drinks are a fairly bog standard selection of lagers and a few bitters and fairly averagely priced at just over the £3 mark for most pints, fairly unusual nowadays in upscaled and gastro-pubbed Islington. Among other things it is probably this that has allowed The Hemingford to retain its attraction for a mixed and local clientele although for atmosphere it can't really be beaten. If you're lucky, you may also catch a band of folk musicians casually holding a sing-a-long around one of the tables.

Gatropubs are coming into their own these days and this pub is right up there with them at the top. The chef does a fantastic job and the menu remains varied and excellent. The prices are steep and at one point they had managerial problems which meant one particular visit ended with rather a bitter taste in our mouths that was no fault of the chef's. I have heard those problems have since been long solved and they can now get back to being the wonderful pub/restaurant they always were. Highly recommend all the food here. Take your loved one for their special occasion or simply for an unplanned treat. They'll thank you for it.

For a small town pub, they have a number of daily specials, most of them quite delicious. Over the course of a week, we had an amazing backed/stuffed aubergine, some avocado/stilton foaccacia, and a few other specials. Book ahead. On the weekend this place fills up. During the week, they need lead time to accommodate having adequate staffing for folks. Indeed - we were there for a Wednesday afternoon lunch, and saw folks getting turned away (or told to wait 20+ minutes for a table) not due to space constraints, but rather due to not enough waitstaff for unexpected guests. They have the typical fire roaring in the fireplace, dark nooks and crannies, and this so quickly became a family favourite, we ate here multiple times during our short respite in the region. I had sweet potato dumplings with lentils which were deliciously differently textured with crispy outsides of the dumplings giving way to creamy insides over slightly firm lentils. My wife got the lamb with tzatziki and when it came out with tzatziki substituted for another sauce, they actually made her a small side of tzatziki since she was excited about it. We wrapped up with chocolate basque cheesecake with cherries that was maybe the best thing of the night. The cheesecake was good, but the tart cherries balanced things out and made the meal.

Personally not a big fan of capers but I quite like it with the anchovies they put on top. Very warm inside of the restaurant even on a freezing day! We had a good time!
