My husband and I attended the first time homebuyers class here and had a great experience. We are…read moreorganized, motivated people who were ready to buy a house but just had no idea where to start. The class was an 8-hour crash course in mortgages, home inspection and so much more. We gained a lot of information in one day, and got our house hunt rolling. It was exactly the kick in the pants we needed to get started and feel confident about taking this step. The class is 8 hours long with a 1-hour break for lunch (either bring one or plan to go out to the nearby Chipotle, etc.). In addition to introduction and commentary by Andrew, they bring in professionals to talk about different pieces of the process. We heard from a mortgage loan officer, home inspector, insurance agent and attorney who specializes in real estate; they typically also have a realtor but Andrew filled in for our class. The program is partially funded by HUD and so the speakers can't actually advertise their business or pass out materials but can leave business cards and brochures behind. Most of the speakers stuck to that rule pretty well so it wasn't like a full day of commercials. We got lots of information in just one day and had opportunities to ask questions throughout. The most eye-opening part of it for me was the home inspector. I feel much more confident going into a home purchase now knowing the major problems that can happen, and the cost and expected lifespan for things like roofs, furnaces and water heaters. Every speaker had good information to share though. I do wish we'd had a chance to hear from a realtor as well. We walked away with heaps of notes and a large sort of textbook that's included with the class. I will say the mortgage portion was more heavily targeted toward buyers who need down payment assistance or are applying for some kind of aid, so if that's not you just hang tight for the first bit. But regardless of your situation, I think this class is a great way to get your bearings and prepare to buy a house!
