I have had problems with my back for a few years, this was exacerbated…read moreby an injury at work about two years ago, when I fell off a step ladder at work when the bottom step broke. Over the forth coming months the pain got worse and my mobility less. I was referred to a Physiotherapist who did a little work on my back and gave me some excerises to do, this I regret to say did not really help. I tolerated the pain and limitations that were imposed on me by the constant discomfort and pain, but thing deteriated and I was left almost immobile, and was having a lot of time off sick from work, this obviously did not go down well with my employers, my doctor prescribed pain killers which up to a point helped. I was however still unable to walk very far without being in considerable pain, to point where on occassions I would loose all feeling in my legs. I was told various things by different professionals, ranging from buy a new bed, and is a natural due to ageing. Not willing to accept these diagnosis or suggestions, so I decided to explore other avenues. I looked on line and purely by chance saw Chiropractic Life, which was only a mile or so down the road - it was late at night so sent them an email explaining my problem and asked if they thought they may be able to help me. I was pleasantly suprised when the following morning I received a call from them, stating that they would be able to give a free consultation to ascertain what the problem was, but they were sure that they would be able to help me. I duly made an appointment. Unfortunately I had to call at short notice to cancel the appointment due to a change in my shifts, they were very helpful and immediately made me another apointment with no cancelation fees, or making me feel that I was wasting their time. I was a bit aprehensive on my first visit, but they made me feel at ease and welcome, whilst I was waiting to see Richard (everyone is on first name terms - which I find friendly and makes the atmosphere very relaxing) I swas shown a Video which explained some of the principals of Chiroptics, this I found absorbing and informative. Richard then asked me into his consulting room and and asked a few questions - some of the questions I had never been asked before by either the physiotherapist or my GP but all were relevent to the problems I had. I felt that for the first time someone was interested in not just my back pain - but in me as an individual, His approach was holistic. After the initial consultation (which was free) he told me what he thought the problem was, and what he could do to help me, the fees were clearly explained to me, and I decided to go ahead. I was unbelievably impressed with his thoroughness, and felt that he wanted to sort my back problems out more than I did!! Another appointment was made for the following day so he could X-Rays of my my spine, this I had never had done before, but that is the way they work, professionally. With the Phsyiotherapist it had been a best guess approach, and my Gp had just prescribed me pain killers and told me to get more excersise(which is very difficult when you can only walk a few yards) Richard knew exactly what the problem was and showed me the X-Rays, you didn;t need to be medically trained to see the problem, several of my vertibrae, were well out of alignment, as was my pelvis and shoulders. He then explained in detail what he wanted to do to correct the problem. No high faluting mumbo jumbo , it was all in plain english, he constantly asked me if I understood what he was saying and asked if I had any questions, he really put me at ease. Since starting the treatment, I have been able to take my dog for a walk, have no time of sick due to back pain, and am able to carry out daily tasks that before I would not have been able to. I still get pain and am not yet fully mobile - but after each session I feel better, many of my friends, and indeed even my boss has commented on how much better I am walking now. I have not had to rely on pain killers for quite a while, and will continue to see Richard on a long term basis, not only to correct my problems , but to make sure they do not re-occur. Im not one for normally writing reviews but richard helped me out so much and karen kindly asked me…read moreto leave a review, so i couldn't really say no. my story - i came in with really bad re-occurring neck pain and daily headaches as a result of seeing a promotion in the window as i live local to the clinic. anway richard was great, and gentle with me, went through everything and i am feeling great now 4 weeks down the line. my headaches have disappeared completely and my neck pain has greatly reduced. He has given me some exercises now and I am positive that my neck pain will go completely.

Although it is much more popular on the Continent and in the States, Chiropractic is being seen more and more as a dependable alternative to conventional medicine and not so much as a complementary treatment. Especially if you find a great chiropractor who offers herbal remedies and nutritional advice as well as a reliable form of Chiropractic, which Anne French does. I have to say I was dubious when I was recommended this place. Anne practices Applied Kinesiology, a chiropractic diagnostic method using your muscle strength to determination subsequent therapy. It feels strange to have these strength experiments performed on your body part, but I cannot deny the results after being treated by her. I felt immediate relief. She also does a great job and making you feel relaxed. Sadly I haven't been back for more treatments, which is recommended as one treatment alone won't fix the problem, but this is just because of a lack of money. That being said, it's only £32 a treatment! The practice also offers Yoga, Pilates and Massage at equally competitive prices, so check out their website.

Low back pain and sciatica…read more We've all heard it before, somebody bends forward, either to brush their teeth or pick up a pencil and bam, there goes the back then a little while laterthe leg as well! As chiropractors low back pain is one of the most common complaints we see, followed by what is generally know as sciatica. What is sciatica? Sciatica is a broad based term which means pain in the sciatic nerve. There are many causes of this type of pain and possibly the most common is a disc prolapse. The discs are the cartilage like 'jam donuts' which are situated in between each of your spinal bones and are there for easy spinal movement and shock absorption. When too much pressure has been applied to a particular area of the disc, some of the disc material tears or bulges out. This then causes localised inflammation which then presses on the nerve root, and most commonly this nerve root will go on to form the sciatic nerve which supplies the muscles, joints and skin in your leg. People tend to assume that because the pain surfaced after one particular movement, then that's how long the problem has been there for. However that is a common misconception; disc's bulge, due to repetitive faulty motion in the back over months or years. The mechanics around the area begin to de-stabilise until that area can't take any more pressure. Then that final (often very simple) movement is the straw that breaks the camel's back. What about taking pain killers or muscle relaxants? Pain killers and muscle relaxants can dull the pain, especially when the muscles around the affected area tighten up. However, these are not treating the actual problem. By not correcting the faulty mechanics or addressing the cause of the problem the actual spinal dysfunction remains. Ice is a great alternative to painkillers as it works locally on the area and has none of the unwanted side effects that many medications have. Most disc and low back problems are easily corrected by chiropractic - by ensuring the local mechanics in the area are working properly the inflammation around the nerve root can be decreased relatively quickly. However, for the actual disc material to be heal back into the 'jam donut' takes a lot longer anywhere between 6 months to 2 years. It is important to realise that the main cause of low back and sciatica are lifestyle choices the most common ones are poor posture especially when at a desk or doing a faulty movement pattern over a long period of time. These problems never happen suddenly. Therefore it is important to get a work place assessment or come to one of our health classes! Considering most people spend most of their lives at work nowadays it's important to make sure that work place ergonomics are correct. Little changes here and there can make all the difference between being able to go to work or having to call in sick for a week because you're back has 'gone'. Regular spinal check-ups are also a great way to ensure that your spinal mechanics are working properly. The chiropractors themselves are really good. Thorough in checking you over and above all the treatment works! I've seen lots of therapists over the years but the chiropractors here have always been the best at fixing me. Not only did they help get rid of my pain, but they nicely nag/encourage me to look after myself in between times. I know it's for my own good and I appreciate the way they really want you to help yourself. They're often busy, so it's not always easy to get an appointment when you want - but they stayed late at the end of the day yesterday. Thank you so much for that.
