We do not have enough great things to say about Karen (owner) and the entire Poetry in Motion staff. They catered our wedding on 6/25/26, and everything was amazing. All of our guests specifically called out the appetizers as being outstanding and memorable. Poetry in Motion was a truly custom culinary experience, which meant a lot to us. We got to choose recipes and food items that were important in our journey as a couple, and PIM did their own spin and incorporated everything seamlessly into our menu. They were even able to recreate a family recipe as a dessert we served! It also wasn't just the product. Karen and all of Poetry in Motion were a great vendor team to partner with. Very communicative, responsive, and experienced, and their collective expertise really showed. They were all working behind the scenes to make sure things went perfectly on the day, and we, as the bride and groom, just got to enjoy our day. While this review is long over-due, it is so important to us to thank and praise Karen and Poetry in Motion, who catered our 25th Anniversary celebration at Nestldown. Everything, and I truly mean everything, about working with Karen and her staff was wonderful and enjoyable from start to finish. Karen worked with us seamlessly to plan a menu that included our family favorites, right down to a s'mores station for this former Girl Scout. Everything about the food was delicious and outstanding, and her team was truly a delight! We received so many great comments from our guests about how much they enjoyed all the dishes and desserts, and the impeccable and friendly service. In addition, it was an unusually hot day in the Santa Cruz mountains, and PIM went the extra mile to set up water stations for our guests in the many areas we gathered. It was a pleasure working with Karen Major for my son's wedding at Nestldown this August 2024. I totally recommend Poetry in Motion to cater your events. She's creative, patient, and such a wonderful person to work with. Poetry in Motin (PIM) was one of the prefered vendors at Nestldown. Karen has a personal relationship with the owners and we can see why she was most preferred. We considerd 3 vendors to cater for the wedding but went with Karen @ PIM for the following reasons: 1. Karen is so sweet to work with. She,very patiently, waited for my son and his now wife to decide on the type of food they wanted at their wedding. She asked them to give her an idea of their fav foods so that she could recommend and present us with a potentila menu. We went through about 2-3 menu options before finally deciding on a menu. Karen also gave us a wonderful complimentary tasting at her home. It was cozy and the food samples were delicious! I was lucky to be included in the tastings. We had to do 2 tastings because my son and his wife changed the entire menu after the initial tasting. 2. The couple were very specific about the signature cocktails they wanted to serve. Karen worked with them to get their particular drink ingredients into the cocktails. While we did not do a tasting of the cocktails, she and her team, nailed it. My son is an avid bourbon drinker and wanted his old fashioned with specific brands of bourbon etc. Karen worked with us on this - she asked us to give her the recipe so that her crew can create it. 3. Karen and her team were on top of everything as the wedding month approached. We chatted via email as well as phone calls to fine tune the menu, order items and place settings. 4. Nestldown uses a specific software for wedding planning and Lauren, Karen's assistant, worked with me on the seating chart. I was not able to input the actual chart into the Nestldown system so Loren did this for me. I also messed up on the seating arrangements and Loren was very patient in working with me to re-number the seats and make sure that I had the correct people seated at the correct table! Of course, we had to change the seating arrangement as our guest count changed. 5. On the day of the wedding, Karen and her crew were just amazing. Our guests enjoyed their meal and everyone commented on how delicious it was. Karen also added in extra appetizers to our menu - Thank you, Karen! So appreciative of this. 6. The wedding at Nestldown was held at different locations so Karen and her crew had to manage the drinks and food as we changed locations. We had passed appetizers at the Koi Pond area. Our 100 guests were spread out and Karen made sure that everyone was taken care of. We had dinner on the main lawn and it was a plated meal. Everyone was served their meal on time and the food was served at the perfect temperature. I did not see too many plates with any food left on it! A special shout out to Karen - who made sure that my youngest son, who is a picky eater and had some food allergies, was taken are of. she made him a very special meal The couple were well taken care of. They were able to enjoy every bit of the food we served. My son and daughter-in-law were so happy and totally enjoyed their special day. I was bummed that I did not get to sample any of the desserts that were served as they were devoured. I saw them displayed and they looked beautiful. Our guests were totally enjoying the desserts. We had tiramisu, assorted fruit tarts and wedding cupcakes. At the end of the evening, Karen and her crew neatly packed up our car with any remaining cupcakes, alcohol/wines. Price was very reasonable as well. Karen (owner) is communicative but in a haphazard way, which concerned me at first. First, we'd like to thank Karen for her flexibility in letting us reschedule our wedding twice due to the pandemic. This made our already stressful wedding planning journey much les stressful. FOOD: We can't forget about the food in this review, of course. We had pretzels as appetizers, and our main dishes were chicken and vegan lasagna (hummus base). Karen was able to come up with six different menus that could work. She also had vegan options that non-vegan people pleasantly enjoyed. We were not able to taste the food ahead of our wedding, which left us slightly nervous (neither my husband or I are "foodies", but we wanted to at least preview what we would be eating on our special day). Nevertheless, we were very delighted with the way the menu turned out. Many guests said everything was delicious, and we have no regrets about the menu. ACCOUNTING: I am not the first to mention this in a review, but with all due respect, I really, really wish Karen was organized with checks. Not only were we asked to send a check in for a second time, but checks were not cashed on time (this left us a bit paranoid and added more stress to our wedding planning journey). Karen also requested old-fashioned cashier's checks. For future clients, this is something you will want to keep in mind. I really wish Karen would stay more organized with the checks. OTHER: Karen's team featured photos of our food and table setup on her Instagram in a really nice post. If you really want the food at your wedding to feel personal and unique (not to mention delicious of course!), definitely go with Catering in Motion. While researching various wedding caterers, we noticed that most catering companies will have pre-set menus that you can choose a certain number of items from. They give you their lists of appetizers, salads, entrees etc. and you select the ones that sound the best to you. But PIM takes a different approach. When we first reached out to Karen she did send us sample menus from previous weddings but she also asked us to send her a list of foods that we both really enjoy eating. I have the palate of a 5 year old so I didn't think she could do much with my list of french fries and cheeseburgers but I was pleasantly surprised. She sent us back a sample menu of foods she thought we would enjoy based on our list. Have you ever had cheeseburger meatball bites and sweet potato waffle fries with fresh guacamole as an appetizer? Because I have now, and they were SO good! And her pigs in a blanket took me back to childhood just like that scene in Ratatouille! Our food ended up being fun and creative and things that my husband and I actually wanted to eat on the day of our wedding! The process was easy and they were also able to manage our party rentals through Danny Thomas so it was one more thing off our plate. Karen answered all of our questions, responded to all of my emails and happily made changes to our final menu to better fit our tastes and accommodate different dietary needs. They provided us with our bartenders too and even helped us come up with our signature cocktails for the day. They set up everything beautiful and really took care of us and our guests. The food was delicious and our guests really enjoyed it. They even offered to pack us up some food to take back to the hotel at the end of the night. Given that you have one shot at an event like this, and the amount of money and time said event tends to cost on average, the relationship between a caterer and the couple is a tricky balancing act. Karen and her team handle things very well in that regard. What you see is what you get. As your big day gets closer and last minute details are modified, forgotten, etc. knowing what you're getting from the people you're working with becomes very reassuring. Karen can cook. We had a diverse crowd with even more diverse palettes and dietary preferences. The team made sure guests were well fed and satisfied, from appetizers, to dinner. One detail about the dinner portion that is quite stressful is accomplishing this in a price friendly manner. Poetry in Motion from a pricing standpoint scales appropriately relative to your budget and tastes. They do not gouge you. I cannot say the same about the wedding industrial complex... Let's discuss drinks. For her signature drink, my wife wanted something that I thought would be aesthetically difficult. At this point, our context with Karen was strictly catering. She nailed the drink. As a testament to the taste, we ran out of the liquor that supplied said drink with 3 hours left in the reception. One thing we didn't expect was the kindness and patience of the team. Not that we expected Poetry in Motion to be rude, but the care with which they addressed our said and unsaid needs was very touching. For example, linens are a seemingly minute detail that actually makes a big deal aesthetically. The team had a system that worked backwards from your wedding date to ensure that you got what you needed and wanted from a linens standpoint, among other details, with minimal effort required - a relief. As a bonus, Karen gave very sage and wise advice and was always trying to make sure that we accomplished our vision for the catering portion of the wedding. We can't thank Poetry in Motion enough. We selected Poetry in Motion for our wedding at Nestldown in July of 2022. Karen and her team did NOT disappoint. When we first met Karen, we got to try out some of her food at another event she was hosting at Nestldown. I am so glad we got to do that because on the day of our wedding, we did not get to eat much! We devoured every bite we got to try! So delicious! We appreciated how honest and straightforward Karen was about choosing between "plated" VS "buffet" serving options. We initially wanted plated, but we ended up going with "buffet" based on her advice, and we were very happy with our choice. More people got to try more of her fabulous food too- which was a plus! Our guests LOVED the appetizers, signature drink, and the dinner menu she created for us. Karen's staff had such a warm and inviting energy the entire wedding as well... I cannot thank Karen and her team enough. We were originally scheduled for April 2020 - and of course with COVID quickly spreading, we had to re-schedule our wedding day. Karen made it all so easy and stress free - I know it could not have been an easy time for her or her team, but she was always checking on us and we figured it out together. Prior to the re-scheduling, I truly enjoyed the ease of communication with Karen, I also loved that my soon-to-be husband and I got to try our menu at her home. It was so lovely to have a home cooked meal in her home and knowing that it was what we were going to eat on our wedding day. Karen really took care of everything, even with our party rentals (glassware, napkins, tablecloths, etc.), she has been working with these vendors for so many years and she always made us feel like everything would get done and taken care of. On our new re-scheduled date, she took care of everything. Of course with it being our wedding, my husband and I did not get to properly thank her and her hardworking staff, but we are so incredibly grateful. She checked on us and made sure we had enough to eat and she and her team just worked so well, we never felt like anything was forgotten. Our venue had Poetry In Motion on a list of recommended caterers and while that may sound restricting, Karen was so open to everything we wanted and our food choices, she really went above and beyond. Where do I start? Karen and her staff did a fantastic job catering our wedding literally 2 days ago. I could not wait to write her a 5-star review. We had the opportunity to do a tasting with Karen at her beautiful rustic home in Watsonville. It was really nice to meet her in person and put a face to the name. She cooked for us like we were family. I don't think I've ever been to a wedding where I was like "WOW this food is so great!" where it absolutely blew me away. However, Karen's food was AMAZING! I am not just saying this cause it was our wedding. We wanted to really "wow" or guests, and with Karen, we definitely did. Our menu consisted of 100% custom requests. We knew what we wanted and Karen executed our vision completely. She and her staff went above and beyond the day of our wedding. The dessert table was full of delicious sweet treats and the s'more station outside by the firepit could not have been a better display. Did I mention the food was delicious??? My favorite two dishes she made were our braised Korean short ribs and dreamy creamy vegetarian truffle mushroom ravioli in a cheesy cream sauce. I could have eaten all of the ravioli really. The only complaint we have was the tiny pigs in a blanket were toasted to the point of concrete, at least the ones my, now, husband and I ate. We couldn't even chew them. But besides that, no complaints at all. All of our vendors made us feel like family. That is definitely how Karen and her assistant, Andrea, made us feel. We were welcomed and treated with such respect and kindness throughout our whole process all the way till the very end. I'm so happy with our choice with no regrets. Poetry in Motion catered our wedding at Nestldown and they were OUTSTANDING! Karen and her team did an incredible job and we couldn't be happier. Her catering service includes food, furniture rentals, beverages, and all food services such as bartending, plating, and setting up/breakdowning of equipment. Throughout the entire planning process, she was very thoughtful of our needs and mindful of our budget. The demographics of our wedding guests were mostly Asians and she designed a menu specifically for them - honey glazed soy sea bass and short ribs with a dark sesame over accompaniments. For appetizers, there were bacon wrapped scallops, Thai basil chicken, egg rolls with a cheese and cracker station! When we went to her tasting, she gifted us with a wine bottle with our names and wedding day on the gift bag. It was an unexpected surprise and very sweet of Karen to go the extra mile! The tasting was very relaxed and she answered all of our questions about her catering process and menu. Fast forward, a couple of months, we went with her to select our dinner settings such as glassware, linen, dinner plates, and silverware. During that process, we talked about the details of how things will be set up and the display of dinner settings. We didn't realize how many things we needed to consider but with Karen's guidance and expertise, it was a simple and painless process. On the day of our wedding, Karen and her team beautifully executed our vision! My husband had the opportunity to witness how her team put together our reception floor layout. It was pretty incredible to see months and months of planning come alive from the cocktail hour layout to the reception. We chose Karen with Poetry in Motion because she is the top vendor at the venue we had our wedding at. Long story short if you choose not to read on, Karen and her team will run a smooth operation on the day of your wedding. She will accommodate any dietary restrictions you have and can work within any budget. We personally had some issues along the way: Positives: (1) Karen did a great job to create a menu for our wedding that accommodated our dietary restrictions (gluten and dairy free) and fit our price per person budget. (2) We had some last-minute changes that we had to make to our menu that she took care of and still stayed within our budget. (3) Karen and her team are very efficient (4)The appetizers were a huge hit with our guests. Problems: (1) We were never asked if we wanted to do a tasting with her before the wedding. (2) She did not cash any of our checks that we sent her until the week of our wedding. Our first deposit (mailed Nov 2018) we sent a cashier check and it expired when she tried to cash it (Oct 2019!), so we had to coordinate with our bank to fix the problem. (3) When food was brought out, the veggies were a cold and not well seasoned. Our guests said they loved the mashed potatoes though. I understand having to bring out the food for 100+ guests all out once is a challenge though. (4) We never met her! We did meet with Andrea the day of our wedding (who was very nice), but she was our only vendor we never got to meet or thank in person. read more

Karen was recommend by our wedding venue so we chose her for our big day. Overall, they did a great job on setup and food seemed fine (I don't think I actually ate!). We appreciated that Karen was flexible in changing the menu from a sit down dinner to appetizers for a slimmed down guest list due to COVID. However, the biggest issue we had with Poetry in Motion was around payment and Andrea's extremely inappropriate and embarrassing handling of the situation day of. Karen never cashed our deposit check and then asked me to write a new check for the full amount. I told her I preferred she cash the original and she told me if it didn't go through, I would be responsible for the returned check fee. It shouldn't be on me to pay the cost of her mistake. The final amount for the day was buried in an email labeled "party rentals" so I accidentally wrote her a check that was $500 short based on a previous invoice. Day of, I was mortified to find that I left the check for the remaining balance in our hotel room. I apologized profusely and said I would get it to them the following day. It was already too late in the day (literally 30 mins from going down the aisle) to ask someone to go get it for me. She essentially told me that was unacceptable and suggested my parents or someone else pick up the tab. I told her to please speak with my planner who had assured me she would speak with Karen to smooth the situation over and arrange payment at a later date. Instead, Andrea went up to my disabled parents (unbeknownst to me) and demanded the balance. I understand I messed up, but she completely embarrassed me and my parents when it was clear I was doing the best I could on my wedding day after paying 90% of the amount due. They literally gave her all the cash in their wallets ($300) and said we would send a check for the rest. She ended up handing it back to them and saying they would arrange with me for the next day so caused this drama for nothing. If you book with them, make sure Karen emails you the final invoice far enough in advance so that you can deal with any last minute snafus so they don't come chasing you for the final dollars on your wedding day. read more

Karen - and all of Poetry in Motion - were absolutely phenomenal to work with from start to finish for our wedding in April 2024 at Nestldown . To sample a number of items we might be interested in, Karen invited us into her home and made everything for us in real time. The food, which was a vegetarian menu of appetizers, salads, and pastas predominately, was phenomenal, and her hospitality made us feel very well taken care of. This feeling was exactly the same the day of the wedding, where she and her team worked everything to perfection. The presentation of the food was first class, her team was incredibly attentive and kind, and the food was just as delicious as the first time we had it. The guests certainly agreed, as several explicitly mentioned how tasty the menu was to us after the wedding. For desert, a friend had made cupcakes, and it was very easy to have Poetry in Motion receive the cupcakes the day of and set them out in a gorgeous display. No detail was missed or too small, whether in the lead up to the wedding or the day of, and for that my partner and I are so grateful! I am not even sure how to write a review that will do Poetry in Motion: Karen, Andrea and their whole team and the hard work and amazing catering, justice. My family owns Nestldown and for us to be able to sit back, relax and not side eye whether or not a vendor was doing things the right way or respecting the rules and our home, we knew that Poetry was the only caterer that would allow us to do that; we were right!! From the first meeting, talking about the extensive plans, set up, guest count and expectations... Karen and Andrea took them and succeeded in strides. They never once made me question my decision or feel worried about anything having to do with set-up or the way the day would run! They spent months planning and working with Danny Thomas rental company to get our perfect dining set up, staffed a skilled and excited team and were constantly checking and double checking to make sure everything was right - all while making us feel like family! When the day came, they had their team perfectly carry out our vision for the day. From the table set up and tabletop display, seating cards, passed and stationed appetizers, passed beverages post ceremony, dinner, and desserts - they were AMAZING!!! When I look back, there was't a single thing I could change - except that as a couple, you don't usually eat that much (since you're always on the go) so take advantage of your tastings!! However, Andrea, who is the front of house made sure we had food and ate first!! She got our dinner from the buffet for us so we could then go socialize!!! Dinner: The food was spectacular. There were no complaints, only compliments and awe. We had a few friend who had severe food allergies and Karen came up with the perfect (probably the best Ravioli that we have ever had) dish to suit their needs: Mushroom stuffed Gluten and Dairy free Ravioli in a Truffle sauce. It was to die for - my husband and I love meat but we wanted that more!!!! They did our whole dessert bar, which despite the don't eat before cake cutting, was devoured because people thought it was so delicious. It was the absolute best day of our lives and for my parents. The fact that we were able to enjoy and not have to worry about a thing made the day that much more relaxed and special!!! All Nestldown couples know my recommendation but for others looking for a caterer, no need to look any further! I would give them 30 out of 5 stars if I could (as cheesy as that sounds!!) My daughter's wedding, held at Nestldown, was catered by Poetry in Motion in May, 2019. We were extremely disappointed in the food, the buffet presentation, and embarrassed in front of our guests. I will try to write a more detailed review in the near future, but, I wanted to at least get a basic review posted since it is a while since the wedding. Karen was recommended to us by our venue and she is top notch! She created the perfect Indian-American fusion menu for our wedding and the food was absolutely delicious! Maybe I'm biased, because it was based on my tastes, but it was the best wedding food I've ever had and as I'm getting married in my 30s, I've been to a lot of weddings! Also, the price quote was cheaper than any of the 3 other companies we contacted, so definitely not sacrificing your pocketbook for the quality! We had initially done a to-go tasting which was super easy to coordinate for our busy schedules and we ended up changing our initial menu to add in the Soulful Mac and Cheese (so good!) and surprisedly paired extraordinarily well with our Chicken Tikka and Salmon in a Butter Lemon Sauce. Karen and her assistant, Andrea, executed our day-of to a T and made sure everything was running smoothly. I loved Karen's dry sense of humor and Andrea has such a sweet demeanor; they were excellent to work with! The rental company Poetry in Motion coordinated with for our tables/napkins was also wonderful and able to accommodate my strange schedule to meet slightly after they closed. We got married on 5/19/2017 at Nestldown. Karen and the entire Poetry in Motion staff are beyond amazing. Karen isn't just your caterer, she makes you feel like family. The day before the wedding, she called with a couple questions and after we had squared away business, she took the time to ask how I was doing and stayed on the phone with me for a bit making sure I was doing ok. If you want someone you know is going to truly care about you and not just be there for the money; GO WITH POETRY IN MOTION. The food itself is incredible. I am the chef/owner of my own food truck, so I like to think I know good food. We had Italian chicken, tri tip, and amazing Mac and cheese, among many other things. Let me put it this way, I ate two entire plates, that's two servings of everything on my wedding day! Most brides try not to eat much the day of in order to look good in that dress, and that was my plan until I had the first bite. It was too good to resist. The next day all of our friends and family had two main comments: the venue was magical, and the food was incredible. One more thing-the day of the wedding, I didn't have to think at all. Karen, Andrea, and their entire catering team were absolutely incredible! From the very first contact we had (Karen sending sample menus and paying careful attention to our budget), to the tasting (Karen had a champagne gift for my fiance and I, and a bottle of sparkling cider for our daughter!), to the day of the wedding, we could not have asked for a better caterer. Poetry in Motion is really invested in making your wedding a smooth and beautiful, stress-free experience. We wanted something other than standard chicken and steak; Karen suggested fried chicken & mac n cheese, perfect for my fiance's Southern roots. And she brought s'mores ingredients for the firepit at our venue (Nestldown). It was absolutely delicious, and our guests were thrilled with the menu. I also happened to mention to Karen that we didn't want to spend a lot of money on floral centerpieces; she told us they could help! They have a ton of decorations they will lend you, and anything else, they can rent from a party rental store (along with the table linens, china, silverware, and glassware they are already picking up for the wedding anyway.) In the end, all I did was buy some sola wood roses to put on the tables, and Poetry in Motion took care of the rest--wood rounds, LED candles, rented lanterns (for the candles), and gold-framed table numbers. They also have a gorgeous seating chart (a big rustic barn door with frames on it. All you have to do is print out the table assignments on 8x11 paper, and they insert them into the frames for you and take care of everything!) Karen, Andrea, and their team truly love being a part of your special day. They relish in the details and they are so friendly and genuinely happy for the couple and the family and friends gathered there. Karen and her team are hands down amazing, not only is her food delicious she was absolutely wonderful to my husband and I through all of the Covid craziness and date changes and never tried to hit us with date change fee's. We hired Poetry in Motion for our wedding at Nestldown in August 2019 and they were amazing! The food was spectacular to the point where many guests went back for seconds. Their staff was incredibly friendly and helpful to all of our guests.
