The attractions and activities for kids were a bit disappointing. The wave pool looked like it was very run down and closed with weeds growing in the concrete. The playgrounds we're really cool, but being in a nature park and around so much water, they had lots of little bugs and spider webs everywhere. I tried to clear some for us to play but gave up after about 30 of them.

My low hanging fruit of forgotten reviews/throw shade at Lake Erie tour continues!…read more Between stumbling across Wolcott Mill in 2017 and sometime last year I made a project of visiting any of the 13 Huron-Clinton Metroparks I hadn't yet been to. Covid really accelerated this long languishing mission. I envisioned Lake Erie Metropark as one of the Crown Jewels, sitting as it does on the lower end of the horseshoe made by the park system, and sitting right on a Great Lake. (Even if it's Erie.) I also figured it to be some bizarro version of Lake St. Clair Metropark, the one park in the chain I've been to far more than any of the others. Back in the summer of 2020 I drove down here with my friend Aaron to go swimming at the non-existent beach. D'oh! My own damn fault there; I should have done three minutes of research instead of assuming LEMP (does anyone use this acronym?) had a beach since it just had to be the bizarro LSCMP. (I've never seen anyone use that acronym.) With as much pollution goes on Downriver I should have just figured no beach and I'm not even questioning that there's a damn good reason there. (See my review of Sterling State Park a few miles farther south into Lake Erie where the water still seems pretty grimy.) On that August day I drove way out to Kensington to visit one of their two beaches instead. Kensington is an outstanding Metropark by the way, the true Crown Jewel of the chain. I returned the next year to hike some trails. 2.75 miles of trails is comparable to its lake-hugging cousin up in Harrison Township I'm guessing but nowhere near the many miles you'll find at Stony Creek or the aforementioned Kensington. Some marshy areas, some woods. I haven't visited the nature center but judging by the ones at Lake St. Clair and Stony Creek I'm guessing it's kinda cool but nothing too stellar. Like don't expect a whole Natural History Museum. I haven't been to the wave pool either but it's odd to me they have that in lieu of a regular swimming pool. The lakefront itself is scenic but not as picturesque as Lake St. Clair. As another reviewer wrote it's strange large areas are so devoid of trees. Wetlands I get, they're essential, but big ol fields just stretching far and wide? Yawn. I hear this park is great for bird watching but that's a hobby I haven't yet picked up. And I've peeped a couple lovely sunrise pics from here which makes me suspect it's a pretty spectacular spot for that. It's just aways out of my way for me to make it at the crack of dawn. I do love my Lake St. Clair Metropark sunrises at the northern end of the metro area though. As I wrote of another Metropark, this place strikes me as being very mid. Let me say mid-tier. That sounds more sophisticated. Looking back over what I've written here this review reads a lot like a two star but it's not really that uninspiring here. There is beauty to be found. It's just the Huron-Clinton Metroparks set the bar fairly high and my constant, probably annoying comparisons to the other parks illustrate Lake Erie just doesn't meet some of the benchmarks. I'd probably have sentimental attachment like I do with Lake St. Clair Metropark (and uh, their beach is usually pretty unswimmable) but I'm not from around here. I'm very keen on going back to Lower Huron, Wolcott Mill and Indian Springs Metroparks (still incomplete grades for Yelp reviews - more to see!) but I doubt I'll return to the Southernmost park in the system.

Hunter contacted me within a few days of making a deposit and kept in constant contact while waiting out the weather and my work schedule. We met at the selected time and place and after some brief conversation we headed to the river. River fishing is very new to me. We talked how how to wade safely especially on the slippery and muddy conditions and how to safely wade unfamiliar water. We got started by Hunter evaluating my rig then watched my casting offering tips and suggestions throughout. We discussed different methods from streamers to nymphing as well as how to fish riffles or not. All in all I feel I got a tremendous amount of info from an experienced angler that I could ask questions as they came up and not just a YouTube video. The best advice though was to get out and do it! I felt as if I was fishing with my brother! Thanks Hunter!

They have a restaurant with gorgeous views of the water. I do believe this place is members only. The food is decent, there are vegetarian options, though not many. They do have fish & chips which is crave-worthy. The coolest thing is summer of 2023 they finished putting in a brand new in ground pool. It is so nice! You can order food from the restaurant and have it brought out to you at the pool. Members can invite friends & family to the pool, who can get in under the members name & member number, if the member is there. The pool has a bit of a landing, so when you step in, it's like a small, shallow splash pad for littles or people who want to sit. There's a bar at the pool, so you can have poolside drinks, and ice cream! The pool in the summer has been 5 stars for us so far. I would rate the food & service at the restaurant with 4 stars. Shout out to server Ronnie who has worked there for several years and takes great care. One additional thing is they often host kids parties for holidays (Christmas they have Santa lunches, Easter, Halloween). These are expensive for members to sign up for, but they put on a very nice buffet style lunch for families and have crafts, gifts, egg hunts, etc for the kids. They also host bands, comedians, and other entertainers. These events also get 5 stars. However please note that the average person cannot afford a membership at this place. If you're lucky enough to have a family member or friend have a membership here I would definitely recommend utilizing it. Be sure to check out the pool!

Unprofessional behavior and poor communication have cost me significant time and money. Want a couple examples? Read on... Last season, the marina was to winterize my boat. I left it in the water longer than I normally do, so I was in a hurry to get it done. In addtion, they were to work on some other items for me at the same time. I called, and said that the weekend weather was going to be near freezing, so I wanted to make sure it could be stored indoors. On Thursday, the woman working (who no longer works there) told me that I could bring the boat down and they would be sure to get it inside, as long as I pre-paid for my service. I called back later to verify their hours, then brought the boat in on Friday evening after work. There was nobody at the marina. I left the boat outside, called the marina, left a voicemail, and verified that I had heard the hours correctly. I had. The voiccemeail also said that they would be in on Saturday morning. Not wanting to chance it, I showed up first thing Saturday morning, only to find that (again) nobody was there. Left another voicemail, but nobody called me back. My boat sat outside, the temps dropped, and I incurred significant extra damages. When I finally spoke to someone the following week, their response: "Oh, the voicemnail still has our summer hours. We are in our winter schedule now". Fast forward to my repairs: They had also prepared an estimate to replace the brakes on my trailer: over $3,000! Between the boat & trailer job, parts were backordered, mechanics were at the boat show, another mechanic ended up down & out with covid, you name the excuse, and they used it. Long story short, it's now April 2023, and my repairs STILL aren't completed. They finally got my boat done in AUGUST, which gave me about a five week season. I said to forget the trailer work for now. I just wanted to pick up my boat and get it in the water. They didn'tso much as offer a discount for causing me to miss 2/3 of the boating season. Not to mention the extra damages caused by the miscommunication of hours last fall. Needless to say, I was not happy. But they had a lot of staff turnover, and Will & Megan had always been good to work with in the past, so I still planned to winterize with them this season. After turning in my winterization form on Monday, Pam called me on Tuesday, saying that I could drop the boat off Wednesday. I verified the hours personally, then told her I'd be there early the next morning. As I was about to pull out of the driveway, she called me & said that she would need to cancel, because they were full & had "nowhere to store my boat". I informed her that I had adjusted my work schedule based on the information she had given me LESS THAN 24 HOURS EARLIER. When I asked why she couldn't have let me know that the previous day, she stuttered & stammered, and had no good reason. After I expressed my displeasure at the lack of communication & the unprofessional way that the situation was handled, she began yelling at me, before telling me "fine, bring your boat down, and I'll find somewhere to put it". She then hung up on me before I could even respond. Needless to say, I will NOT be bringing my boat to them, today or EVER. The next two marinas I called for winterization services were both happy to get me in immediately, and their prices were about 30% less. The also quoted a complete brake job, based on the make & model of my trailer. It was under $2,000. Humbug has become a dysfunctional marina that only seems concerned about getting their money. The funny thing is, if their customer service wasn't so poor, I'd still be paying their inflated prices. Do yourself a favor: Get a second quote before you take your boat to them. And if you do business with them, be prepared for the "unexpected issues" that will arise.
