Happy Tails Pet Boarding and Daycare

I am a veterinarian in Cumberland just a few miles away from Happy Tails. I have known Bonnie a…read morelong time as she worked with me at the veterinary clinic for several years. She left us to start this boarding facility as it had been her dream to have a pet boarding business. I want those reading this to know that she has loved dogs and cats forever. She taught me how to "baby talk" to dogs and cats at the vet clinic. She searched with me when my beloved Baxter went missing one winter and she cried with me when he was never found. My clients at the vet clinic knew Bonnie and loved Bonnie as much if not more than the veterinarians (me included :) ) My clients at the vet clinic take their dogs to Happy Tails with Bonnie and the owners come back with nothing but positive experiences. They love the one on one attention she gives to the dogs and cats that come to stay with her. Some of my clients tell me how Bonnie has a special room with a couch just for their couch-potato dog. I have tried to use Bonnnie's services in the past but I am a last minute planner and so she usually doesn't have anything available for me-totally my fault as I will contact her the day before I need to bring my dog in for a 3-4 day stay. But this last weekend she had room and boy was my England lucky. One thing to know about me is that even though I could leave my dog at the vet clinic that I have worked at for 10 years and love and trust, I don't because he would be in a kennel all day with minimal interaction. When I have left town with my family in the past I either bring our dog (and cats sometimes) with us or I have friends take him. So for me to take England to a kennel is a big deal. So this was my experience: I contacted Happy Tails about vacancy and talked to Bonnie right away. She emailed me forms which included one information sheet and two very simple/short pages to fill out. Due to timing and logistics, I ended up filling out the paperwork and taking photos of them along with my dogs vaccine records and texted the photos to her and she was happy with that. (I did bring in the hard copies when I picked my dog up). My husband took England in during break at work and he said the check in process was very quick and easy. After the 4 days I picked him up. This was after a busy weekend and the boarding building smelled great and looked clean. No dogs were barking. Yes, that's what I said-NO DOGS WERE BARKING. I don't know if that's normal but still impressive. And yes, I did walk through to see there were at least 10 dogs still boarding at that time. I think they get pretty tired out from playing all day. Bonnie had several stories to tell me about England's stay and his new best friends (Remi and Reba). She does a lot of doggy daycare so she is pretty good at figuring out which dogs will play well with each other. There are two outdoor play areas for the dogs to run around in along with several enrichment toys such as tunnels and slides. The dogs get potty breaks plus a long morning recess and afternoon recess when they play together outside. England is home now sleeping. I am so grateful to have such a wonderful and safe place to take my dog when I go out of town.

Anyway, we just moved to Minnesota and tried P-K Pet Resort & Spa for the first time this past weekend. Since we don't know anyone here yet, we didn't have a backup plan if things went wrong--and our pets are truly our children--so their safety and happiness were our top priorities. From the moment we arrived, I was impressed. I was invited to tour the facility and was pleasantly surprised by how clean and quiet it was. At most boarding and daycare places, you hear lots of barking and commotion, but not here. Instead, there was soothing music, TVs for visual stimulation, and every dog I saw looked happy--wagging tails, relaxing on their beds, or enjoying their private patios. We've always boarded our pups together because one of them, Newt, has separation anxiety when she's not with her brother, Samson. The staff took my concerns seriously, asking about food aggression and making sure safety came first, but they also respected my knowledge of my dogs. We agreed that if there was any problem, they'd be separated. I appreciated that balance of caution and flexibility. Our dogs got cuddle time, outside play time, and their own outdoor patio space. We also loved having access to a live camera feed--Samson especially enjoyed the patio! On top of that, we received thoughtful updates letting us know the dogs were doing well, eating, and showing no aggression, so they got to stay together. They even joked, asking if we brought the right dogs since I had been so worried beforehand. Overall, P-K went above and beyond to make us (and our pups) feel comfortable. We felt reassured, supported, and most importantly, we could see how happy our dogs were. We'll definitely be coming back.

It was heartbreaking. The staff were spectacular and they wouldn't give up. Kept giving him fresh food, talking to him. Finally broke the ice with a lick mat covered in whipped cream. They sent a picture, he had one side eye on Alex while he licked. Between the live feed, emails, and phone calls, we were able to check on his progress. What a wonderful experience. We were only going to be gone for a few days, so it was reassuring to see his progress. Once he started eating we knew everything was going to be okay. Just a great experience, much more than a business, a real service provider.

ZERO STARS! BEWARE: Never again will I bring my dog there and anyone who does should think twice…read more Owner is passive aggressive, and just plain aggressive. Check the reviews and pay attention to the dates! Almost every review is from the previous owners who are excellent. NOT THESE ONES Jason is scary and also seems like he would take his aggression out on the animals. My dog never liked him, nor did she like going to this establishment. At her previous daycare she would pull and whine with excitement until we went into the building. Here, her tail was tucked and I had to force her into the building. To no surprise now, my dog always seemed fearful of Jason. We had an incident here last week when I asked Jason if I could pick my dog up early as I had an unexpected half day off work. I got off at noon with only a few hours notice, and I asked when I dropped my dog off that morning if I could pick her up a little after noon, (since it takes about 15 minutes to get there from my work) but I would gladly pay the whole day since I booked the whole day. He said "sure fine" and pulled my dog into the back. I arrived at 12:25pm and the building was closed, lights off. Nobody answered any calls or emails. I was so confused. Perhaps Jason just forgot he said it was fine. I was concerned there was nobody on the grounds and I couldn't get a hold of anyone (I mean what if the building was on fire? Who would know?! What if I had an emergency and had to pick my dog up right away?!) but ultimately I just figured it was a miscommunication or he forgot. Once Jason did arrive, he was rude and aggressive. He said they closed at noon and there are "fees for this" and he tried to tell me I told him I would pick her up BEFORE noon. Which is impossible because I did not get off work until noon. I told him a fee would have been fine had he told me that this morning. At my old daycare they had fees for picking up outside of pickup times and I completely understand that and have paid them, but he never said anything about that. I put as much distance between us as I could, I stayed near the door. I have never been treated like this. I was scared. My phone was in the car and I had no way to protect myself. I went back to my car to grab my phone while he was billing me so I had a way to call if I needed help. He sat at the counter and I told him he needed to get my dog now. It seemed like he was being extremely slow to make me uncomfortable and wait, to show me he had control over me and my dog. Finally, with what usually takes 30 seconds to grab my dog, but took much longer, he comes out and hands me the leash and I asked him to cancel every booking (I was bringing her in daily and had some weekends booked) and he said "sounds good" in an uppity voice. Also, keep in mind, I am new to Hayward, like... only been here two weeks. I had just started to bring my dog here and this was going to be a long term arrangement. I booked out weeks in advance, and was bringing my dog in daily for daycare. I wasn't just a random once-in-a-blue-moon customer. But I only lasted a week before this happened. Aside from this very scary situation, the business is completely disorganized and understaffed. There are hours during the day where the dogs are completely alone, no way to contact the owners, and no way to get access to your dog. They get no exercise and are just in the kennel all day, everyday. It is nice to have your dog somewhere safe, and this place IS NOT IT.
