The fish came with a large portion of rice and vegetables, as well as chopped onions. The rice was of the "minute rice" type, which is not my favorite, but it was seasoned and a good side to have. The vegetables were doused in garlic and melted butter/margarine, and better than I expected for something reminiscent of frozen vegetable mix that's steamed/sauteed. The fish was very well seasoned, perhaps by marination, with lots of parlsey and fresh lemon. The wheat bran gave a subtle flavour to the fish, which remained tender and juicy inside thanks to the coating. If you don't enjoy the texture of the bran, you can always brush it off. Good stuff! Looking forward to try more.

The service was great, helpful and friendly. Butchery is a dying art and anyone with a love of food should support their local butchers. Keep in mind that if you buy steak at your local chain store supper market is cheap quality, often very badly butchered and overpriced, while a butcher has a deeper appreciation and respect for meat. You don't have to eat offal to be a meat lover, enjoying a good quality steak is sufficient and reason enough to bypass the chain store and go support your local butcher, local fishmonger and local whatever. Make friends with the owner and you'll see the good stuff that comes from this relationship. It's like going to a bar, if you're a good tipper, by the end of the night, your drinks are free.

There are some incredible marinated and prepared meats which are perfect for the bbq: massive beef ribs, pre-cooked short ribs, filet mignon brochettes, souvlaki chicken, spicy California burgers. Yum, etc. Come early, the bbq stuff sells out. There is also a great cheese and deli counter where the homemade bacon is tasty and the handmade signs to let you know about cheeses that are recently award-winning are both helpful and endearing. On the weekend there are a few small tables with umbrellas where you can sit, eat and people watch, but you're next to a (great) fish shop, so it's not romantic or anything. The staff are low key, helpful, and seem to speak at least three languages at any given time (English, French, Italian.) There is a freezer section in the back full of homemade pastas stuffed with things like panchetta and portobello mushrooms and cheap yummy homemade pizza dough. Some things are eyebrow-raisingly expensive: the multi-coloured olives and the wild mushrooms are in this category, so are some of the kooky fine vinegars, oils, teas and chocolates, and the rarer cuts of meat. This is to be expected I guess but as a local I appreciate that you can also always get fresh quality basics like eggs, milk and sour cream here. The meat texture and taste is amazingly good. With such a great choice of meat, it took me longer to make my selection and was served by a pleasant young lady who would not pressure nor push you to buy. With such excellent service, fresh meat well priced, Terrine et Pâtés is now on my list of favourite terrine place in Montreal.
