I sat at the side bar that looks into the kitchen - which can be an issue noise-wise when they are making smoothies - as the blenders are very LOUD! But, I made the choice to sit there - and there are tables to sit at in the dining area. It was a hot and humid day out the day I visited - the AC in the place was struggling to keep up - meaning it was not as cool inside as one would like. This place started as a food truck five years ago that turned into a physical location about three years ago that is one of one. What makes it such a wonderful place is they work with special needs individuals and they also have them intern at this place. That's such a wonderful thing as someone who mentors someone with special needs and has a wife that works with individuals with autism that means a lot to us. We even thought about the having the person I mentor intern here for some life experience/fun environments. It can be difficult to find gluten free options and they always deliver good food. However, there definitely seem to have been some changes recently--not sure if it's new management, perhaps multiple factors. I'm excited to see some new additions to the menu, and any period of change is bound to come with some hiccups, but the use of generative AI is a HUGE concern for me. The environmental impact of generative AI is well-known, and that seems to be at odds with the values of Free Range which emphasizes local, fresh food and being more environmentally friendly. However, on my most recent visit, AI-generated merch was available for sale, as well as AI-generated coloring pages for kids. Some of the text on recent social media posts also has hallmarks of AI generation. There are many free coloring pages available online, and it could be really cool to see a collaboration with a local artist for merch designs instead. Free Range Cafe is a place I've always really enjoyed, and their food is still delicious. I want to continue coming here, so I hope that management can take these concerns into consideration as they move in their new direction.
